JUAN DE LA CRUZ - Himig Natin
After releasing one album as a quintet (Up In Arms), Juan Dela Cruz (the Filipino equivalent of John Doe - a band name, not a band member!) soon downsized to a power trio and recorded their next studio album Himig Natin in 1973, featuring their classic line-up of guitarist Wally Gonzalez, drummer/growler Joey Pepe Smith (fresh from a stint in the equally-OTT Speed, Glue, & Shinki) and Mike Hanopol on bass. The title track (translation: Our Music) would become an anthem for the national Pinoy rock scene (I wrote it in the toilet, twenty minutes before going onstage. I was on acid at the time... -Pepe) and, via tracks such as Take You Home and Shake Your Brains, one can be assured that getting laid and getting wasted are truly universal pursuits!
