Marc Dutroux is one of the most notorious criminals in Belgian history. \r\n He was convicted of having kidnapped, tortured and sexually abused six \r\n girls, ranging in age from 8 to 19, four of whom died as a result. He was \r\n also convicted of having killed a suspected former accomplice. He was \r\n arrested in 1996. His widely publicized trial took place in 2004. A \r\n number of shortcomings in the Dutroux investigation caused widespread \r\n discontent in Belgium with the countrys criminal justice system.
