Artist: YOUNG, ROLAND P.
Title: Confluences
Format: LP
Label: EM
Country: Japan
Price: $23.00
"LP version. The fourth release from Roland P. Young on EM Records sees him moving ever deeper, earthbound and rooted, yet simultaneously flying further out, expanding his exploration of untethered celestial realms. Recorded in 2014 following a move to Tel Aviv, the title Confluences hints at the blend of cultures and histories in his new homeland, and is reflected in the music, which shows a range of cultural influences, filtered through Youngs unique sensibility and vision. This is a calm, spiritual set, evidencing an inner comfort that was less prevalent on his Brooklyn recordings. This is not to imply that RPY is no longer searching; this release brings to fruition the promise of earlier recordings such as Isophonic Boogie Woogie (EM 1045CD/HJ-LP) and Istet Serenade (EM 1087CD/LP), made complete via Youngs multi-instrumental chops on sax, bass clarinet, kalimba, and keyboards working in tandem with his rhythm and bass programming skills, his multi-track studio mastery, and an ever-evolving sense of musical form and drama. The confluences of cultures are of course swirling throughout this release, but also the confluences, as noted above, of the earthy and the celestial, as well as the temporal confluences of the past, present, and future. Perhaps more than any of his previous releases, Confluences realizes Youngs description of his own work as "Afro spiritual minimal electronic space music." This release is the next stage of Roland P. Youngs never-ending voyage." - EM.

Title: Isophonic Boogie Woogie
Format: LP
Label: EM
Country: Japan
Price: $21.00
"Long-awaited, newly repressed for vinyl LP edition of the legendary 5-track first LP from U.S. horn wizard & original underground FM radio DJ Roland P. Young, featuring soprano sax, clarinet, and electronically-processed bass clarinet. Youngs mid-70s work with jazz/chamber/electronic ensemble Infinite Sound (including members Glenn Howell and Aisha Kahlil) helped form the musical language of Isophonic Boogie Woogie, a solo, jazz/world music-flecked exploration of acoustic and electronic sounds. An enjoyable outing from a neglected musician. Cosmic Afro-minimal electronic winds recorded in late 1970s San Francisco. CD version re-released in 2005 on Em Records." -EM

Title: Mystiphonic
Format: LP
Label: EM
Country: Japan
Price: $21.00
"Mystiphonic is the third release from Roland P. Young on EM Records, following Isophonic Boogie Woogie (EM 1045CD/HJ-LP) which was originally released in 1980 and re-issued by EM in 2005, and the 2009 Istet Serenade (EM 1087CD/LP). Mystiphonic is the fruit of two years of recordings at Youngs Isophonic Sound Laboratory in Brooklyn, "comprovisations" which are more electronic than the previous EM releases, and yet this new LP retains Youngs emotional life-long horn playing, a romance which began in his youth in Kansas City. Also carrying on from previous releases is the all-encompassing warmth and organic/oceanic feeling of Youngs music, a rootedness that has been present since his early exposure to Charlie Parker, on through his San Francisco years and ever forward, linking past, present and future through deep American soil to his world-embracing current music, all united through his "Isophonic" philosophy. The Mystiphonic blend of electronics, percussion and horns is one of subtle beauty, sure to please Youngs fans while attracting new admirers." -EM.

Title: Hearsay I-Land
Format: LP
Label: Palto Flats
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Palto Flats is pleased to release an overview of the mid-80s works of Roland Young, perhaps best known for his spiritual jazz record, Isophonic Boogie Woogie. This release comprises the entirety of his 1984 four song 12”, I-LAND, as well as most of his 1987 LP, Hearsay Evidence, both released on his label, Flow- Chart Records. This release presents a different side to Rolands story, and features both vocal and writing contributions from his wife Risa. On Ballo-Balla, Risa sings over a simple and spacey 808 rhythm and bass sequence, in a track worthy of later Larry Levan and Paradise Garage. On other tracks, Roland sings in a higher pitched, soulful voice over similarly rudimentary analog sequences, to create a relaxed atmosphere, with lyrical content touching upon love, social commentary, emotions, and more, all in a deeply personal way. The tracks from both releases have been remastered from the original master tapes and pristine vinyl, and were sequenced in collaboration with the Artist to create a cohesive full length album of his mid 80s works. These songs fit squarely in the mold of Jeff Phelps, Dam Funk and the like, and are meant to be enjoyed both at home and in downtempo DJ sets, and as a historical document and pop record. Rolands other solo released LPs are Isophonic Boogie Woogie (Flow-Chart), Istet Serenade, and Mystiphonic, all on the Japanese label EM Records. He was a principal songwriter in the early 80s no- wave band, The Offs, whose first record featured a Basquiat cover, and had a sound comparable to The Contortions. Roland is a classically trained jazz clarinetist who performed at a young age with Alice Coltrane. He moved to New York City in the early 80s and has continued to make music since, with a diverse and substantive discography of self-released spiritually influenced jazz and new age releases. The artwork for Hearsay I-Land is an original ink drawing by Nathan Antolik, and is based on the original album cover of I-LAND. First run of 500 copies on black vinyl. Download Card included." - Palto Flats.
