Artist: VOLCANO THE BEAR Title: All the Paint I Can Breathe Format: 10" Label: Beta-Lactam Ring Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "This 10" mini album presents some of VTBs very earliest recordings. The sessions seem to indicate that VTB enjoyed a particularly powerful vintage of Winsor-Newton cadmiums while recording. And for lack of VTB really repeating themselves, I can only paint an abstract portrait of the present opus. Their obsession with small sounds is in place and they already make for a crack improv ensemble, giving their pigment soaked inventions the kind of life that beckons many repeat listens. ATPICB is comprised in nearly equal parts of surrealist/dada sound sculptures and of minimal wave/prog canvases. All tracks were culled from the earliest VTB tapes of 1996." - Beta-Lactam Ring. |

Artist: VOLCANO THE BEAR Title: Hotbite Live At The Nightlight Format: LP Label: Blastocoel Sound Country: USA Price: $25.00 |
| "Hand-printed sleeves made by Matt Hart in a numbered edition of 100. Three men came to Chapel Hill in late November of 2006 to spread their sounds: the show happened to fall on a holiday and Aaron Moore, Daniel Padden and Clarence Manuelo played to a small crowd of fifteen or so folks in the friendly confines of the Nightlight Bar and Club. What ensued was an unfolding carpet woven from waves of tape, twang and beating of objects. The old piano even got in on the action - the floor was played and, as the gentlemen sang, the books lining the walls seemed to hum back. This was one of only four shows that the chimera-like trio shared in the fall of 2006. The LP was mastered by Kev Reverb." - Blastocoel Sound. |

Artist: VOLCANO THE BEAR Title: Golden Rhythm/Ink Music Format: LP Label: Rune Grammofon Country: Norway Price: $23.00 |
| "Rune Grammofon presents the brand-new studio album from Volcano The Bear, a calculated, hysterical melting-pot of This Heat, Robert Wyatt, Faust and The Residents, of musique concrète and ethno-folk, all seen through a prism of theatrical improvisations and unhinged set pieces. Formed in 1995, and after several self-released tapes and CD-Rs, VTB so excited Nurse With Wounds Steven Stapleton, that he brought his United Dairies label out of cold storage to release their first album proper, The Inhazer Decline, in 2000. Since then theyve released music on such labels as Misra, Beta Lactam Ring, Textile, Digitalis, Pickled Egg, Alt Vinyl as well as their own imprints Volucan and Volfurten with the exceptional Classic Erasmus Fusion from 2006 being a possible highlight. On record, VTB offer stark and stunning absurdities in the most bizarrely beautiful way. Recycling and re-contextualizing their material is an innate habit, and the variety of recording options they might choose (be it a highly-equipped professional studio or a second-hand dictaphone) allows their craft to be formed in a myriad of different ways. VTB have toured extensively throughout Europe and North America and in concert they are the duo of Daniel Padden and Aaron Moore. Absurd humor and eclectic ways of producing sounds are characteristic of their live performances and their extensive knowledge of the traditions of experimental and folk music makes the band difficult to categorize. The band record everything they play and will often use these recordings as raw material for their albums. VTB have released a number of records since the start, often mixing studio, live and home recordings. Golden Rhythm/Ink Music is their first more or less "proper" studio album since Amidst The Noise And Twigs back in 2007. Largely based on the sonic fault-line between Aaron Moore and Daniel Padden, its also the most focused and driven of VTBs prolific output so far, showcasing the duos unique musicality and interplay, while retaining their trademark eccentricity and humor throughout. It presents "rock music" as seen through VTBs skewed eye, featuring more of Padden and Moores drum/guitar combination than on previous albums. Taking the bizarre energy of their live duo performances into a studio environment, and combining it with VTBs eclectic instrumentation and Clarence Manuelos singular audio-work, GR/IM shows VTB making their most vital work to date. Includes mp3 download code." -Rune Grammofon. |

Artist: VOLCANO THE BEAR Title: Volfurten Format: LP Label: Volucan Country: UK Price: $22.00 |
| "Volfurten is the new trip in to the odd and the strange from UK musically freaks Volcano the bear, its ltd to 300 copies each in a different hand painted cover. Which is a nice bonus, but what about the music- well this is as odd as anything they?ve done before, feeling like a very strange magic carpet ride- touch down musically in (their own) world music, jazz, odd metallic moments, dada sound tomfoolery, oh and no real vocals one this one either. The feeling, vibe or theme that starts the album and reappears later is very desert based in my mind. Though a very strange desert, one with muilt coloured sands and camels walking along the sky and strange arabic men with huge beards trailing behind them as they give audio swimming lesson backwards. Yes this is very odd stuff indeed, Track one drags us into this strange ethnic world with wonky snake dance guitar and ethnic percussion. Track two takes us deeper into the desert where we really seem to start to loose are mind as we meet all manner of manic chanting and strange audio shenanigans, before dropping into a very odd nightmare world of bent Bernard Herrmann string work, via strange building drone tones. Next it goes into a little surreal ballet dance practice, with clunky piano and all manner of bizarre calls and sounds over the top. It all ends off with a strange ritual air via distorted instrumentation and what almost sounds like typewriter key hits .Track three seems to ushers us into a black and white scene maybe something from a odd early Jess Franco film, where strange macabre female dances out a jerky and plainly disturbing death dance. As ragged violin hover and swirl in horrific air ,female voices chant like spirits calling you over the other side and goosepimply organ weaves on like the reaper seeking out victims. So as you can see you have to expected anything and everything to happen with in these audio confines. I wont detail any more as Volcano the Bear stuff is best tripped into solo and with out set vision." - Roger Batty. |

"Addle-headed and pleasantly isolationist, Volcano the Bears Volve punishes the listener for paying attention, but not necessarily in a damaging sort of way. This obscure little slice of avant-garde drone rock was second in a series of live cdrs issued by the bands own label, voluca. It has its moments, for the most part. "Organza," 11 minutes long, used feedback like a lonely violinist, embellishing its structure-battering pianos and unlistenable under-noise to dart under the legs of prog rocks manufactured philosophical extravagance. "Vast Banket" a-minute-and-a-half long, was the Boredoms being pushed down a flight of stairs. Enthralling, if a bit tuneless." - Dean Carlson, All Music Guide. Recorded live 22.3.98. |
