Title: Ragged + Right
Format: LP
Label: Hot Boots!
Country: France
Price: $18.00
"Ragged + Right was originally released (on CDr) in a miniscule edition of 60 to coincide with a live performance at the Holy Trinity Church in Leeds. Chances are, if you werent in attendance that night you probably missed out on this one. In this day in age where bands crank out limited edition CDrs on a weekly basis, another one slipping through the cracks would hardly merit further mention - simply add it to the pile of decaying plastic discs and move on. Such a fate for Ragged + Right however, would be a severe injustice given this release is certainly one of the highlights in the VCO discography (and is also notable for the inclusion of special guests John Godbert, Marc Orleans and Matthew Bower). With this in mind, weve taken it upon ourselves to bring this album to the masses with a fanclub edition reissue. You dont get second chances like this very often, so youd better be quick...this one definitely wont be around for long."

Title: Tuning to the Rooster
Format: CD
Label: Important
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"So far the first and only record ever made by The Vibracathedral Orchestra using a 24-track mixing board. Typically the group records on 2 tracks despite the fact that their eccentric and complexly arranged sound practically requires 24 tracks." - FE. "This is music as a shamanic aid, made as much for the players themselves as for the listeners. But as Im writing from the listening perspective, I have to inform yall that this is music to get you there. Every track sounds as though it has always just been there, its just you aint quite tuned into its peculiar frequency until now. The 12-and-a-half minute Wearing Clothes of Ash is like a piano-led Paradieswarts Duul-period drone-a-thon with John Cale and Terry Riley guesting on viola and keys. Following this, the sublime Baptism Bar Blues is proof positive that they can rock the riot house with pure adrenaline rush when the decision is made. Indeed, this track is magnificent and should be available to the masses free or in pill form." - Julian Cope.

Title: Unnatural with Pain-Relief
Format: LP
Label: Krayon
Country: UK
Price: $26.00
“The A-side drops straight into one of those time-evaporating sleights-of-hand from a simple stack of loops. A tidal guitar figure wraps around sparse ricocheting foundations of moiré percussion as harmonic resonances flow in and around the space, segueing into one of the most beautiful pieces Vibracathedral Orchestra have ever caught on tape. A truly glorious cascade of pentatonic feedback augmented by circling horn ascensions and the ever-present hand drum and shaker, rattle and oomph. The B-side was recorded on the same binaural bonce as the A but instead is a fully blown-out NO-FI blast documenting a performance at Cafe OTO and features trap-star Chris Corsano. A wild, snow-blind, open-cranium trip. Corsanos drums flatten to a blur of metallic clatter, spiky overtones, and room-levitating bass drum punctuation. Ideas rise and fall from within the maelstrom of their ritual; a two-finger tonebank solo teeters on the brink of its own crisis, the occasional astral whizz-bang floats around the ear-space drawing out your minds focus, a bloated, head-nodding bass riff appears, everyone gets involved. The shred goes seriously out, taking every head and item of furniture not nailed down with it. Art by John Godbert; design by Michael Flower. Mastered and cut by Lewis Hopkin.” - Krayon.

Title: My Gates Open, Tremble By My Side
Format: CD
Label: Lexicon Devil
Country: Australia
Price: $13.00
"Originally released on the Lexicon Devil label in 2004; a reissue of their obscenely rare 1999 LP on the Roaratorio label, with three bonus tracks. Vibracathedral Orchestra started in 1998 with the core 5-piece line-up of Neil Campbell, Bridget Hayden, Michael Flower, Adam Davenport and Julian Bradley. Between the five of them, a musical CV would read like a history of UK underground experimental music from the last decade or so, with members having been involved with the likes of Richard Youngs, Simon Wickham-Smith, Sunroof, Skullflower, and others. The sound and aesthetic of VO is based heavily on percussive, improvised, minimalist drones that occasionally bear heavy resemblance to everything from very early Velvet Underground (and proto-/post-Velvets projects with John Cale, Angus MacLise and La Monte Young) to Popol Vuh and Amon Düül to essential UK cult artists like Third Ear Band and AMM. With a massive array of percussive, stringed and toy instruments (bells, recorders, flutes, mandolins, violins, whistles, organs, etc.), the band soon began wowing people over with their limited self-released CD-Rs and occasional live shows. So, in the intervening years, with a smattering of "real" releases on VHF under their belt, and various limited vinyl releases elsewhere, comes this Lexicon Devil CD. My Gates Open... was originally released on the Roaratorio label in 1999 in an addition of only 250 copies. Not only is the album considered by many fans to be their finest work, but the CD contains a bonus three tracks from the same recording session that until now have remained unissued. Musically, it all scorches in that patented Vibracathedral style: monolithic sheets of organic, repetitive drones that arch into quieter, more subtle territory, rhythms and grooves. This expanded edition is certainly an excellent place to start in exploring the world of Vibracathedral Orchestra. "-Lexicon Devil

Title: Dabbling With Gravity And Who You Are
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.50
"The latest and current pinnacle from the quintet of Neil Campbell, Bridgit Riley, Julian Bradley, Michael Flower, and Adam Davenport was assembled from recordings of their weekly sessions in Flowers kitchen. The tracks here represent the joyous, celebratory side of VCO - all forward motion, massed strings, percussion, horns, and little instruments rocketing forward in a swirl of sound. Compared to the more austere sounds of recent CDs like Lino Hi and Versatile Arab Chord Chart, the tracks here take off from the spot where the loose hippie-chant-and-drum action of collectives like Amon Düül intersects with the polyglot instrumental approach of mid-60s Sun Ra (ref. "Exotic Forest," "Shadow World," etc). "There is no chord formation that can be planned," says Bridget Hayden, "which creates elation or sadness, or any art which is profound enough to change anything fundamental about a person. There is just a resonance around us which musicians and artists are using or not using." - VHF.

Title: Joka Baya
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"The ever-mysterious VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA returns from another relatively quiet period with an uncompromising set of outre jams on a trio of limited-edition LPs. Slightly reorganized around a line-up of stalwarts MICK FLOWER and ADAM DAVENPORT with frequent collaborators JOHN GODBERT (TOTAL) and JOHN MOLONEY (SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN), the band here stretches way, way out over these six sides. Joka Baya offers up a set of shorter pieces on the A-side in a high-fidelity style that contrasts the dark, smoky sound of the rest of the tracks. The percussive grooves are overlaid with SUNROOF!!-like shimmer, stabbing electric leads, gentle acoustic rain, and droning organ peeking through at opportune moments. The roaring side-long epic on the flip is a droning, phasing slice of psychedelia with Moloneys drums battering the tape in between long stretches of humming stasis."

Title: Rec Blast Motorbike
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"The mighty classic lineup of the Vibracathedral Orchestra returns with their first new music in many years. Here the quintet of Michael Flower, Neil Campbell, Bridget Hayden, Adam Davenport and Julian Bradley (joined by raconteur John Godbert) feature in a set of upbeat tracks that put the groups radical instrumental strategies into a package of full-on rock action. Recorded live using a binaural head system, the sound is nicely ragged in a you-are-there way, with scouring guitars and bleeping electronics riding atop the bands signature grooves. As with some of the bands other records, theres more than a hint of the early Velvet Underground spirit in these ten tracks. If you wish that Cale and Reed would have been more of an instrumental band, here it is." - VHF.

Title: S/T
Format: Double LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $21.00
"VHF presents a public service reissue of this impossibly rare and choice title in the VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA oeuvre, originally issued by the band in 2004 in an edition of 250. Featuring the "classic" lineup (MICK FLOWER, NEIL CAMPBELL, BRIDGET HAYDEN, ADAM DAVENPORT, JULIAN BRADLEY) that made Queen of Guess and Dabbling With Gravity and Who You Are, this self-titled double takes a wild ride through the inner-workings of VCOs stream of consciousness. Many of the tracks (selected from research and development jams) cut in abruptly, continuing the informal, expansive vibe of the bands other self-released items. The thick blanket of signature drone-fog is never far away, anchoring tunes that veer from early Velvets-style rock jammers ("Thrift") to swirling electronic mystery ("Clear"). On side three, "Gist" builds up a looping, guitar-led rhythm like a lost AR & Machines track, sharing the same side with the pulsing "Floetz," which rides a taut electro-pulse bolstered by group small percussion. This lengthy two-disc album concludes with the almost side-long "Minkey," featuring the full complement of VCO sound signatures in one big, hallucinatory swirl. Exclusive to this release is a 35-minute DVD of three live performances selected by Flower. A rare chance to see some cinema verite of the group in action, the performances here (shot in the UK in 2005 and 2007) are all on the rocking side, with furious drumming and guitar strangling. Perhaps best of all is Flower and Campbells optional audio commentary track (!) on "Wisdom T," providing some insight on the how and why (and some witticisms, too)." -VHF.

Title: Smoke Song
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"The third  of three new LPs from the VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA. Smoke Songs more gentle exposition starts with ADAM DAVENPORTs santoor (a type of hammered dulcimer) leading the band into a lengthy mid-tempo groove on "Smoke Song," followed on the second half of the side by the short, quiet "Cholita Maria." The second sides 17-minute "Get It?" lays down the tremolo and phase in a manner reminiscent of the best Spacemen 3 comedowns, taking a pulse and riding it into organ- and percussion-fueled bliss." - VHF

Title: The Queen of Guess
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.50
"While certainly VCOs most upbeat and percussive music, the nine tracks on this immense, visceral slab of rackety action run through a wide range of styles. Ramshackle Sunrise has a gamelan-like, five-note melody overlaid with a hovering drone. The Silent Socket rocks with Sister Ray-style guitar careening along side actual drums. The two 20-minute epics that bookend the record are a study in contrasts: Your Head Shone Like A Stone has a heavy, excited buzz, while the closing Goodnight Stars Goodnight Air is a gentler acoustic epilogue, gliding into the rosy future." - VHF.

Title: The Secret Base
Format: LP
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"The second of three new LPs from the VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA.  The Secret Base starts up at full throttle, straight into a raw-sounding live outing, with MICK FLOWERs  overdriven guitar occupying the same sonic space that gives his Japan banjo / shaahi baaja workouts with CHRIS CORSANO their urgency. The sound is dark and rough, almost Xpressway-like in its claustrophobic atmosphere. The percolating krautrock stylings of "If You Cant Smoke Em" chugs along hypnotically for over 13 minutes to close out the side. The entire B-sides 20-plus minutes are devoted to the clanging free sound of "Eyes of Wood," where gamelan-like metal percussion dominates the proceedings." - VHF.

Title: Versatile Arab Chord Chart
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"The second full-length outing from the quintet of NEIL CAMPBELL, MICHAEL FLOWER, JULIAN BRADLEY, BRIDGET HAYDEN, and ADAM DAVENPORT. Like their UK cousins and fellow VHF recording artists Sunroof!, VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA usually works from a base of modal improvisation. Led by Campbells sawing violin, the group builds up arcs of lingering overtones beneath an undercurrent of melody. They cut the drones in their life with extremely effective bursts of near rock, in a style reminiscent of the pre-Nico Velvet Underground (circa 1966 or so). The bands combination of clattering percussion, droning strings, and considerable sense of where to put the "groove" makes them unique among their peers. If you have a subscription account at emusic.com, you can download tracks for purchase here." - VHF.

Title: Wisdom Thunderbolt
Format: CD
Label: VHF
Country: USA
Price: $14.50
"Wisdom Thunderbolt marks the triumphant return of VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA (MICK FLOWER, BRIDGET HAYDEN, NEIL CAMPBELL, and ADAM DAVENPORT) after more than three years in the wilderness of intermittent performance, tangential projects, and unfindable limited editions. The seven tracks on Wisdom are the VCOs most rocking dispatch ever, neatly combining the Ra-like collage of tracks like "Wisdom Thunderbolt" with the insistent pulsing jams of "A Natural Fact" and "Order of the Broad Eraser." "Ochre Dust" and "Rainbow Whirlwind" are more in the old-school VCO thick-blanket of sound, with tuned-percussion melody peeking out from the fog. After a surprise opening, "Sway-Sage" heaves with raucous drumming (courtesy of MAGIK MARKER PETE NOLAN) under the swells of sound. Hard to imagine, but this is the first widely available music (except for the Tuning to the Rooster comp) from the VCO since 2003s acclaimed The Queen of Guess." - VHF.
