Mike Shannon is an artist with an extensive history in sound. starting back in the late 60s in Florida, moving to San Francisco in 1977, on to Seattle in 1994, and now in November of 2002, moving back to Florida, he has covered much territory, not only on land but in sound. most of his activity have been under- or undocumented (though a large archive exists), but he did publish cassettes of some projects through his own Joy Street Studios label throughout the 80s and early 90s. the body of work that he has amassed over the last twenty five years included so much good material, and of such varying types, it was hard to decide what to release when we started to think about issuing some of his material. there could have easily been a record of just electronic work, or of just solo acoustic instruments (western and non-western), or just natural recordings, let alone all the group work (from playing in electronic performance ensemble Earnerve to Jeph Jermans animist orchestra, and many places in between). in the end we settled on a work which he assembled originally in 1993 (newly edited and mixed for LP with added sections from 1972), as it represented so many of these aspects and seem to flow together so well. so we have minimal sections blending a street hawker in London with electronic tones, field recordings, percussion, string sections, a dilruba solo played with a chopstick, and a section which on first hearing I thought must have been a full ensemble of people playing, sounding as it does like music from some far off lost island (in truth it ends up he played the whole thing through multi-tracking). this I hoped would serve as an introduction to the world of Mikes music, as it certainly deserves more attention. produced in a limited edition of 204 copies, with screen printed cover." - Anomalous.
