Artist: GROUPER Title: Way Their Crept Format: CD Label: Free Porcupine Society Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
|
"Way Their Crept is a beautiful and haunting release of processed vocals, keyboards and guitar recorded by Liz Harris in Oakland, California. Melodic and emotive elements create a complex contrast of grit and grain that Harris shares with fellow Oakland free-noise musicians Tom Carter and Xiu Xiu. Her music parallels the spiritual, meditative bent of guitarist Christina Carter while giving the breezy ambience of Brian Eno and Harold Budd a noisier, more brittle presence." - Free Porcupine Society.

|
Third pressing, regular printed jacket and insert. originally released on Type in 2008. "On Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill, Harris third full record as Grouper, a few meager shafts of light are finally allowed to penetrate the mix: A gently strumming acoustic guitar reappears regularly, and Harris words are, for the first time, occasionally discernible. These tiny hints of accessibility are just enough to deepen the musics essential mysteriousness, to make us feel tantalizingly close to Harris before shes gone again, the echoes of her breathy coo humming in our ear." -Pitchfork

Artist: GROUPER Title: A I A Format: Double CD Label: Kranky Country: USA Price: $17.00 |
| "This is the first CD issue of Groupers 2011 self released two part album subtitled Dream Loss and Alien Observer, comprised of songs written and recorded over the last four years. A chronological order informs the thematic trajectory of the dual release. Dream Loss is the first album and is a collection of older songs, while Alien Observer is mostly made of newer songs. Each is meant to stand solidly on its own, and also as a satellite in the others system, subjects on either side of the waters surface, on either side of a trick mirror; at times reflecting one back to the other, at times looking straight through to the other. Enough has been written about Grouper in the past few years that there is no need to wax poetic here. Suffice it to say that Liz Harris has created an exquisite sonic universe where she is the sole inhabitant, and we should consider it a privilege to listen in." -Kranky. |

Artist: GROUPER Title: The Man Who Died in His Boat Format: CD Label: Kranky Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "When I was a teenager the wreckage of a sailboat washed up on the shore of Agate Beach. The remains of the vessel werent removed for several days. I walked down with my father to peer inside the boat cabin. Maps, coffee cups, and clothing were strewn around inside. I remember looking only briefly, wilted by the feeling that I was violating some remnant of this mans presence by witnessing the evidence of its failure. Later I read a story about him in the paper. It was impossible to know what had happened. The boat had never crashed or capsized. He had simply slipped off somehow, and the boat, like a riderless horse, eventually came back home. The Man Who Died in His Boat is an album of unreleased songs recorded alongside the Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill album." -Kranky. |

Artist: GROUPER Title: Cover The Windows And The Walls Format: CD Label: Root Strata Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
|
"First ever CD version of the LP Root Strata originally released in 2007. This one has everything youve come to expect from Portland, Oregon-based LIZ HARRIS. Cyclical vocal vapors and guitar / piano shapes levitate on the surface of hissy atmospherics dense with a feedback that conjures up all sorts of latent images from the subtle body / mind. Lizs songs always seem to be perched delicately between layers of blissful fuzz and her stark, gorgeous song craft. Its a mix that more often than not leads to dazzling results." -Root Strata. Edition of 1,000 CDs in a heavy black & white offset printed cover.

Artist: GROUPER Title: Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill Format: CD Label: Type Country: UK Price: $15.00 |
|
"This is the third full-length release for Portland, Oregon-based Liz Harris. Harris might have achieved a significant fan base thanks to the whispering, near-ambient vocal crusades of her debut album Way Their Crept and its follow-up Wide, but those with a careful ear would have heard slightly more trapped beneath her fuzzy chain of effects. Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill marks a departure of sorts for Liz, which sees her turn down the fuzz boxes which caged (and to some degree defined) her sound and allows her voice to ring out above everything else. It is an album steeped in the world of dream-pop -- a genre pioneered by the likes of Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil -- and far from shying away from the reference, Liz has instead grabbed on with both hands, creating an albums worth of perfect, left-field pop songs. Using delicate song structures which are at once both familiar and somehow alien, her vocals cry out hauntingly over stripped-down guitar lines and looped environmental recordings. Just listen to "Id Rather Be Sleeping," a track that could be a mournful take on Belly, albeit with a more fragile heart. These unforgettable harmonies and vocal lines that embed themselves into your consciousness before you even realize it are the key to the albums success and the reason why it makes such a lasting impression. There is something to Liz Harris music that defies time and makes you sit up and listen. These are the future soundtracks to love, despair and ultimately, hope."- Type

Artist: GROUPER Title: Tried Format: 7" Label: Type Country: UK Price: $6.50 |
|
"Portland-based Liz Harris (aka Grouper) has captured hearts worldwide with her distinct blend of noise, ambience and a dream-pop sensibility. She submerges her songs in a shimmering haze of hiss, looping chorals and decomposed guitar feedback, recalling the ghosts of My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. This latest 7" takes her sound one step further still; "Tried" is very densely produced, but "Everyone In Turn" is simply vocals and piano, sounding like a lost track from beneath a 1950s pier. Harris unique productions sound like nothing else on earth." -Type.

Artist: GROUPER Title: Way Their Crept Format: LP Label: Type Country: UK Price: $15.00 |
|
"Originally released on CD in 2005 to huge acclaim, Way Their Crept is the debut solo recording from Portland-based experimenter Liz Harris aka Grouper. Now appearing on vinyl for the first time in a limited edition of 500 copies. Since the release of Way Their Crept, she has gone on to release a second album, Wide, and also a collaboration with Xiu Xiu, but this introductory album shows her unique vision at its most pure. The sound is deceptively simple; merely layers of vocals processed again and again through looping delays and chains of effects, but the emotion Harris manages to inject into her voice and into the crackles, hums and waves of feedback, is almost unfathomable. Like many of the best records, this is not an instantly accessible album, yet give it time and the drifting distortion and almost ghost-like sense of melody will take you into another world entirely. One might choose to label Way Their Crept as an ambient record, but to label it as such would be doing it a great injustice -- this is a meeting point of psychedelia, folk traditions and early electronic experimentalism. It is incredibly hard these days to stumble across music that really sounds unique or even original, but somehow Liz Harris has managed that here, and beneath the whirlpools of ambience and tape hiss there is an untouched beauty waiting to be discovered." - Type.

Artist: GROUPER Title: Wide Format: LP Label: Weird Forest Country: USA Price: $19.00 |
|
2008 release repressed - new cover art and no longer gatefold. "Highly anticipated follow-up to the majestic Way Their Crept, Wide is another beautifully dazed float through wordless choral drones that touches on the early music of Hildegard Of Bingen and Palestrina as much as Popol Vuh, Two Daughters and Taj Mahal Travellers alongside hypnotic guitar lines that work the softest spears of flesh deep into your spine while illuminating imaginary frozen landscapes populated by pyramids of shimmering delay and melodies that you might well have dreamt of. Some of the tracks have a more dazed, avant-garage, almost Pink Floyd/Simply Saucer-esque guitar drone to them that wasnt quite so present on Way Their Crept and it adds a great psychedelic/Astronomy Domine feel to the wuzz of vocal tone. Grouper has collaborated with Jandek, Xiu Xiu, Ilyas Ahmed, Six Organs of Admittance, Jorge Behringer, Badgerlore, and others. This is the vinyl edition of the cd released on Free Porcupine Society." - Weird Forest.
