| "Policeband was a one-man act - the man being Boris, a New York City kid and a classically trained musician who picked up on performance art while studying and teaching at Cal Arts in the early 70s. Boris became Boris Policeband after a live performance in 1976 during which he monitored, on headphones, police communications from a scanner and recited their chatter while he accompanied himself on electric violin. Boris was fascinated by cop culture and the often prosaic and sometimes poetic reality of law enforcement. Over the next couple years the cop-talk and violin-screech coalesced into discrete songs. His live performances were extremely loud/edgy aggressive/dissonant, and even though most songs were under a minute long and a set rarely exceeded 10 minutes, Boris could quickly empty a room; and that was something he took pride in. The rooms he cleared included CBGBs, Maxs and the Mudd Club; as well as other venues like the Kitchen and Artists Space. Boris, a self-proclaimed Materialistic-Socialist and Antidisestablishmentotalitarian, was a character and downtown club fixture. His days were spent combing thought thrift and pawnshops for material to add to his collection of used books, sunglasses (which he was never seen without), and wristwatches. Every night he was in clubs where he leaned against a wall while listening to classical music with an ear plug on his transistor radio and bouncing his pink Spaulding off the walls and deftly catching it; all the while engaging in snappy repartee and/or swapping insults with passersby. Boris put Policeband down in the mid-80s to pursue his classical viola practice. His present whereabouts are unknown."- Dike Blair (liner notes from New York Noise. Vol. 3). Last copies of this official reissue from 2004 of the first Index LP, originally released in 1967. All copies have a certain amount of edge-warp (as expected, I guess) and are sold as is. "Much has been written about this incredible band. Much of it isnt true. I want to set the record straight. Index was formed in the early spring of 1967 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. I was 18 years old when I met a chain-smoking 16-year-old named Gary Francis. Our conversation soon got around to rock and roll. He told me that he and his friend, John Ford, were forming a band. I told him that I played drums and we arranged a jam session at Johns home on Lakeshore Drive. Our first meeting was incredible. Our sound was full and powerful. Johns lead guitar techniques were fresh and innovative. After our first sessions we knew we had something special. Index was born. Soon we hit the local sock hop circuit, playing at high schools and teen clubs in the area. We poured our unique sound out at The Hideout, Undercroft and G.P. War Memorial every weekend. One afternoon John pulled out a new album he had been listening to. It was a new band with a mind-shattering sound called The Jimi Hendrix Experience. John played some songs he had written inspired by this psychedelic sound. Over the next few days, Fire Eyes, Shock Wave and Feedback were written. This album was recorded in December of 1967 at the Ford estate. It is recorded in mono sound with literally one microphone and with all instruments and vocals recorded at the same time. The cover photo is of Orpheus and Bacus, founders of a singing group John joined at Yale. The stiff, board-like figures seem to characterize the exact opposite of this musical collection. This reissue is taken from the original recordings. Nothing has been added and all songs are in their original length. Over the years various bootleg copies of this album have surfaced but this is the original work." -Jim Valice.

In between, layered, psychedelic guitar work and the occasional electrified vibraphone overlay a mix of beefed-up psych-rock muscle and a more stripped-down, guy-in-a-bedroom sound. | "Repro-reissue of this 1967 album on Vault, featuring Ry Cooder. Obscure but classic drug vibed Indian-based psychedelic sitar-led instrumentals w/ an early Beefheart flavor. CD reissue from the 90s is long unavailable. "Ry Cooders Ceyleib People are arguably one of the more innovative groups of the late 60s. Taking the loping blues romp of Captain Beefheart and filtering it through Indian music, the group created a very short album of two 10-11 minute parts. For 1967, this is definitely hippy experimental music, hopping from guitar riffs to sitar drones to mellotron rambling and back without regard for convention. Its almost as if there was an intent to fuse the influences of Ravi Shankar with those of the old blues legends, except that rarely is there any true juxtaposition of both styles, instead one will start out and then give way to another, segment by segment. Its as if someone gave a studio the masters for several Ravi Shankar and Captain Beefheart albums, asked them to splice them together, and then left, only to have the engineer play a joke by adding parts of Days of Future Passed in as well. Overall, its a pretty successful experiment especially considering its age. While this might not have been so impressive had it been from a few years later, its presence in 1967 is quite prescient." -Mike McLatchey |

| "In its initial incarnation between 1989 and 1994, Squirmbo was the caffeine-addled fabrication of Hornraiser (Tony P), Jason the Unpopular (Jim S), Guttersnipe (Phil S) and Stygian (Mark S). The western Massachusetts collagists endured a deep esteem for the hypnotic pastels and unholy mersh of Steinski, Prince Paul, Nurse with Wound, Ghédalia Tazartès, RRRecords, Christian Marclay, Sentridoh, Gum and William Burroughs cut ups. They also spent 1001 sleepless nights ingesting the stuzzadelik detritus of the previous 80 years, including and especially Fletcher Henderson and Tav Falco’s Panther Burns. Along with Bushwick V (Mark V), the five chums simultaneously established and maintained Vertical Records between 1989 and 1994 (which is poorly represented in the digital realm at present and should not be confused with the multitude of other Vertical Records, then or now). Vert issued seismic crunk from Cop Shoot Cop, Sebadoh, Royal Trux, Suckdog, Merzbow, Jason Loewenstein’s Sparkalepsy (or Heather’s Overbite, opinions vary), Caroliner and eventually Squirmbo and related deformities The Fuck Orchestra, Doña Velasquez & The Gag Reflex and BLBAF. Approbation for Squirmbo from the fanzine masses of the time - including a centerpiece in Bananafish - bewildered the group, who were nevertheless delighted and showed it to their parents. Tragically, our brother Mark S returned to dust in a final selfless gesture in 1994, thereby ending Squirmbo and Vertical Records and drawing the so called “classic era��? to a close. The remaining three Squirmbo members, again with Mark V, burrowed deep underground, only to emerge years later cloaked as professional normals who enthusiastically pay their taxes and quote Seinfeld episodes to the satisfaction of their urbane colleagues. | "This is a collection of live-recorded improvised material by Portland, Oregons Jackie-O Motherfucker. Compiled by founding member Tom Greenwood, this music captures the sound of a reconfigured Jackie-O during the late summer of 2006, with vocalist Eva Salens (Inca Ore), Tom Greenwood, Danny Sasaki, and Nick Bindeman. Their first stop was at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, where the group were scheduled for their first appearance supporting the Dirty Three. There they would begin -- unrehearsed in this formation, and in front of a large audience. The plans to perform material from their newest release Flags of the Sacred Harp were scrapped, and the band launched into a free-form set of improvised, trance-inducing, punk-inspired, psychedelic rock, which became the framework of the new music they would develop together over the next few years. Freedomland is the document of this trip through America. The record consists of location recordings, captured live, and mastered in the United Kingdom. The songs were created from the spirit of improvisation, and honed by performing nightly in dive bars, music halls, and art galleries across America. Salens vocal delivery is raw and honest, the words flow from conversations, to streams-of-sub-conscious conjuring, and prayer. Guitars alternately soar into cloud-scapes, and battle like free-jazz saxophones, propelling the group into new terrain nightly, while the percussion of Danny Sasaki alternates between exploratory and dead-solid motoric. The collection was edited by Tom Greenwood, from dozens of live recordings, and captures a rare moment in the bands long and confusing history. Documenting three gigs in Oslo recorded in 2010, the album is deep and weird, with liquid sounds juddering around the occasionally identifiable percussion or Rhodes motif. In the evolution from a side project / studio group to a frequently working live act, Aethenor kept their sound intact, taking the musique-concrete-style transitions and "whats that sound" ethos of their three previous efforts directly to the stage. Noble, having spent a couple of decades playing drums with Derek Bailey and other well-known UK improvisers, moves the music along subtly, keeping much of the focus on the burbling sound mass. | "Recorded together and originally conceived as a double-CD back in the dark ages of 1995, Carved Into Roses and Infinityland find the transitioning from the heavy riffs of SKULLFLOWERs early days to a more free-form sound that continues to drive MATTHEW BOWERs many guises (TOTAL, SUNROOF!, HOTOTOGISU, MIRAG, etc.) to this day. The revamped lineup of Bower, STUART DENNISON, RUSSELL SMITH (of UK scuzz legend TERMINAL CHEESECAKE) and PHILLIP BEST whacks away at both styles simultaneously, with lumbering hooks meeting rainbows of coruscating feedback. Both records start with lengthy, two-chord modal jams, anchored by the guest organ of SIMON WICKHAM-SMITH. The Singles disc collects both sides (over 50 minutes) of the four 7-inch records that were released around the same time and made largely by the same lineup. Not exactly a "singles band," Skullflower nevertheless has more than a dozen releases on the format. The alternate take on "White Fang" is even more jagged and crackling than the one on Infinityland. "Choady Foster" and "Spent Force" are huge pools of sound. Disc 1 takes off from where last years Found Star Sound left us - a mix of fuzzy guitar and organ rhythms jousting with voice, bowed strings, and unidentifiable percussion in a compressed fog. Disc 2 is a headlong rush into newish territory, with analog synth vs. birdsong, childs voice vs. sawing violin, chug vs. fizz, etc. There are many tracks on both discs that have subtle (and overt) melodic and rhythmic undercurrents suggesting a fuzz/hiss-dominated alternate-universe version of say, Harmonia or Richter Band. Featuring the "classic" lineup (MICK FLOWER, NEIL CAMPBELL, BRIDGET HAYDEN, ADAM DAVENPORT, JULIAN BRADLEY) that made Queen of Guess and Dabbling With Gravity and Who You Are, this self-titled double takes a wild ride through the inner-workings of VCOs stream of consciousness. Many of the tracks (selected from research and development jams) cut in abruptly, continuing the informal, expansive vibe of the bands other self-released items. The thick blanket of signature drone-fog is never far away, anchoring tunes that veer from early Velvets-style rock jammers ("Thrift") to swirling electronic mystery ("Clear"). On side three, "Gist" builds up a looping, guitar-led rhythm like a lost AR & Machines track, sharing the same side with the pulsing "Floetz," which rides a taut electro-pulse bolstered by group small percussion. This lengthy two-disc album concludes with the almost side-long "Minkey," featuring the full complement of VCO sound signatures in one big, hallucinatory swirl. Exclusive to this release is a 35-minute DVD of three live performances selected by Flower. A rare chance to see some cinema verite of the group in action, the performances here (shot in the UK in 2005 and 2007) are all on the rocking side, with furious drumming and guitar strangling. "Someday, the meeting that occurred between these two guitarists will be legendary. For now, its only available on the archaic 12" LP format. Matthew Bower has been carving great big swaths of sound into the collective unconscious of hundreds of young people for over a decade. His work with Skullflower, Total, Sunroof!, etc ranks as some of the most memorable and durable (not to mention enjoyable) of the "noise" era. Richard, on his own and with assorted collaborators, has been busy issuing creative and personal missives from a practically unknown and unexplored corner of the universe of sound. The music on this thing is two side long tracks for electric guitars. "Site" bakes the listener with radioactive waves of high pitched and droning feedback. After a few minutes, a zen like peace emerges from the noise, causing the listener to fall into a deep trance which induces thoughts of flowers and birds and peace and stuff. "Realm" works a slightly less dense tangent on the two guitars as atom-splitters formular, but still manages to throw off all sorts of sparks. | "A recording of disarming delicacy, the only album by Pic Nic was released by the Hispavox label in the hazy year of 1968 after the short, one-year life of the five-piece, and it featured an innocent and touching cover which immediately invited people to find out what was behind it. The formation of the group began in 1966 Barcelona after the split of Brenners Folk, a short-lived band created by the Venezuelan musician Vytas Brenner. They included most of the original members of what later would become Pic Nic, mainly guitarist Toti Soler, then 17, Jordi Sabatés and, of course, Jeanette. The rest of Pic Nics line-up was completed by Isidoro "Doro" de Montaberry and Mexican Mario Alfonso "Al" Cárdenas. Jeanette (real name Janette Anne Dimech, born in London in 1951) was a child of the diaspora; her mother was from the Canary Islands and her father from the former Belgian Congo. From her native England the family had moved to the United States, where she would remain until she arrived in Barcelona as a 14-year-old, her tender voice carrying the echoes of Californian folk-rock. Rafael Turia, a radio man and neat interpreter of Donovan songs in Spanish for Discos Belter, introduced them to the Hispavox label. Their official story starts after their meeting with the Madrid record company. Producer Rafael Trabucchelli got involved and that was it. He changed their original name to Pic Nic and chose Jeanette as their vocalist. They recorded their first single, Cállate Niña/Negra Estrella (1967), which sat at number one on the charts for 10 weeks. After their equally-successful second single Amanecer/No Digas Nada (1968), they got working on what would be their only LP. The album possesses a rare pre-adolescent lyricism, and Trabucchellis arrangements and production transforms their folk ballads into something never heard before, or since, in Spain. Besides the Vytas Brenner song "Te Esperaré," the covers of Peter, Paul And Marys "Tiny Sparrow," Janis Ians "Societys Child" and the only track sung in English, bluesman Jesse Fullers "San Francisco Bay Blues," are remarkable and their renditions rival the originals. However, theres no better track than "Cállate Niña" to define the spirit of the album: a lullaby sung by two small girls after the death of the mother of one of them, it overflows with melody despite its simplicity, and its use of triangle, harmonica and a male backing vocal provide an absolutely ghostly quality. Jeanette would start a successful solo career two years later, covering songs written by Manuel Alejandro, José Luis Perales and André Popp. After that, Pic Nic never recorded another record. Themes on this album include disappointment and the necessary courage to face mistakes, the road that lies between perception and memory and that vital path that appears once we have cleared out the fallen leaves that were hiding it. Its the recalled memories that will make up our life, as life is just firm present and feeble past. Carmen Santonja and Gloria van Aerssen speak to us, sometimes as the worried mother, other times as the warm lover that whispers secrets in our ear and, finally, as the slightly older friend, wiser and more experienced, who tries to show us lifes twists and turns. They possessed an intellectual and vital knowledge light years away from their contemporaries, an unusual curiosity and talent, and their musical references were as wide as scarce were their prejudices. Often considered two kind and sensitive angels, they were indeed that and much more too: malevolent, sweet, sarcastic, intelligent. | "In the mid-80s, Granada was a small redoubt of avant-garde resistance. While Madrid bragged about being the capital of the new wave scene -- the much-trumpeted Movida madrilène -- away from any media interest, the Andalusian city was part of a European-wide network where the free circulation of ideas and knowledge could be linked to the current CopyLeft movement -- an international scene where musicians were editors and the artists were equally fans. They exchanged music following that do-it-yourself philosophy in which the cassette had an ideal role as the vehicle of music diffusion. Ani Zinc would become an expert amateur of such activities. As a child, there were no records in her home in Andújar, but radio gave her company. It was her only contact with music. She received her first shock listening to "Remember Love," the repetitive song by Yoko Ono. She later found out about Llorenç Barber. Only when she arrived in Granada to study psychology did she discover that she wasnt the only one that liked a kind of music that didnt resemble anything. Granadas proximity to Africa made it possible to tune into Arabic, flamenco and pop radio stations. She would record those sounds with a radio cassette and with her own hands she would cut and paste the magnetic tape. Unable to get that Yoko Ono song out of her mind, she started discovering the possibilities of her voice. Diseño Corbusier was born out of that obsession and also out of the electronic explorations of Javier G. Marín, then a first-year law student. They had met in 1981 after an ad in the music magazine Vibraciones. "If youre into bands like Cabaret Voltaire or Flying Lizards, call me," wrote Marín. If their first record (Pérfido encanto, 1985) was a vibrant experiment where the rhythms werent yet muscled up, with El Alma de la Estrella the duo took a step ahead. They renovated some electronic equipment and signed a distribution deal between their own label, Auxilio de Cientos, and one of the most prosperous Spanish independents of the 80s, Nuevos Medios, who were working with labels such as Factory at the time. Marín had been advised: if the rhythm cant be danced to the records wont sell. It was 1986 and he was constantly listening to DAF. El Alma de la Estrella gathered all of Zincs obsessions. On "Chiquillo" she imitated the angry womens voices which filled the streets of the poor neighborhood where she had grown up. "Ritmo 21" cant hide her admiration for Yoko Onos vocal register and "El Club del Ruido" came about as a fragmented document of an interview they did on the radio show of the same name. Marín created rhythm structures with which to organize the material. This time, he replaced an archaic Korg synthesizer with a powerful Roland SH101, and the tiny drum machine Boss DR-55 with a German-built one that used real percussion sounds: the MFB-512. Rather than electronic or even industrial music, Diseño Corbusiers second album was a vibrant piece of domestic craftwork. Very few got to hear it, but you get to hear it now.  "180 gram vinyl reissue with insert. 1982: Dragged by decades of international isolation, Madrid and Granada performed, unaware and in their own way, the same roles that London and Sheffield had assumed during the punk explosion in the UK. While the capital grabbed headlines and considered itself the epicenter of modernity, 400 kilometres southwards, Granada developed an experimental scene despite the scarce resources available. Pérfido Encanto is Diseño Corbusiers first contribution to a European-wide scene where electronic instruments rose up against the media domination of guitars. They first got together when Ani Zinc, a psychology student without any previous musical experience, met two law students obsessed with the power of machines but with different approaches. Rafael Flores believed in the extreme noise of bands like Throbbing Gristle as a source of endless energy. Javier G. Marín had a sexier concept of synthesizers. The outcome was natural: Marín and Ani Zinc amicably parted ways with Flores, who would have a remarkable career under the alias Comando Bruno. Under the name Auxilio de Cientos, Maríns intention was to provide distribution to those unclassifiable projects he knew through fanzines, radio shows and record trading. Anis intention didnt go beyond spending time manipulating her voice on the cassettes she recorded. But one of her collage tracks reached national radio. Signed as by Neo Zelanda, "Paso hambre," consisting only of a treated, menacing and magnetic vocal, was played one night and the calls brought the radio station to a standstill. The record label DRO quickly signed her. The deal was for two singles: one with said track and another one for Diseño Corbusier. The latter never happened, so Marín decided his humble distribution company would become a label. And its first release would not be a single but an LP. The Korg synthesizer was the perfect tool for those who didnt know how to play and would never go to music school. The Boss DR-55 rhythm machine had a sweet appearance but a devastating character. A radio cassette player plugged into a Revox was the recording studio. And finally, Ani Zincs microphone: naivety made intention. Pérfido Encanto quickly sold its 500-copies run, more than half outside Spain." -Vinilissimo.

| "180 gram vinyl reissue of one of Vainica Dobles strongest and most experimental albums. Folk, jazz, pop and traditional Spanish music create a beautifully haunting and captivating LP. "In 1984, the Spanish Movida movement was in full bloom and the people taking part in it professed the same devotion to Vainica Doble that British punk displayed towards teen idols such as Marc Bolan. But it would be hard to find a record from those years more impervious to the Movida than Taquicardia, the authors of which seemingly didnt know about such admiration or didnt care about it. Eternal dilettantes, it wasnt strange that the career of Gloria van Aerssen (born in 1932 in Dos Hermanas, Seville) and Carmen Santonja (San Sebastian, 1934) moved forward, most of the time, due to the encouragement of a fan. But this jump without safety net, as Mario Pacheco described it, only could have happened on a label as pathologically respectful towards its artists as Pachecos Nuevos Medios imprint, and at a vital point such as the one the duo were going through during the middle of the decade. It was his enthusiasm which took them out of their silence to record their sixth album and the end of a cycle, as their later recordings would finally be an epilogue of what culminated here magnificently. Elegant, classic, austere and, nevertheless, sounding at times like genuine avant-garde, Taquicardia is the reflection of a critical stage in the life of its authors. Disillusioned by the poor repercussion of their two previous albums for Guimbarda, the outstanding El Eslabón Perdido (1980) and El Tigre De Guadarrama (1981), Gloria and Carmen had found themselves at the peak of mature age and empty-handed. The duo delivers here their most personal, introspective and bitter work, which surprisingly becomes, as if by magic, a superb collection of calls to chaos, libertarian fables and exultant love songs. Passion becomes idolatry, gallant coplas (Spanish popular songs) are touched by grace, pieces of marital bitterness, all of which culminates in an anthem of incredible beauty such as Sígueme, clean, stripped, overwhelming. Gloria declared being so ashamed of the tracks almost pastoral tone that she refused being credited for it. Of course, its her voice which will make the song remain forever. Stripped of the glitz they had displayed in the preceding years, its harder to find here the source of popular and academic music which could usually be heard in their music. | "A fleeting moment of inspired folk rock/psychedelia, recorded at Oberlin College in 1968 by four college students and one local teen. The band was the brainchild of student and guitarist Steve DeTray who had just returned to school after a brief hiatus in Utah, where he was undoubtedly inspired by the whole West Coast psychedelic rock scene. Upon returning to Oberlin DeTray recruited some friends who had already been playing together in a blues band. After a year spent playing a mix of covers and original material, mostly at on-campus and off-campus parties, the boys decide to commit their moment in history to vinyl, recording 24 Hours in two sessions with the help of fellow student David Crosby (not of CSN&Y fame, as is sometimes claimed). The original pressing was just 300 copies that were then sold mainly to friends and local fans, and soon became one of those rare collectibles from which several low-quality bootlegs were made. | "An internationally known artist, Franco Battiato has been everything in his long career, from beat singer to avantgarde performer, producer, and contemporary music composer. His beginnings lay in the mid 60s, with many singles released with no particular success, the first two under his real name of Francesco. He had left his native Sicily (he was born in Jonia, near Catania in 1945) moving to Milan around 1965. In 1970 after his collaboration with Osage Tribe (that he quit before their only album Arrowhead) he had a record deal with Bla Bla, releasing his first solo album in 1972. Foetus, housed in a outrageous cover (reproducing a foetus) was definitely a prog album, but a very original one, with a minimalist sound mainly based on the use of a VCS3 synth, unusual lyrics, complex arrangements. Two tracks, Energia and Una cellula were also released as single. Produced by Pino Massara in the 70s, Foetus remained unreleased until 1999, when Vinyl Magic finally released it on CD (VM CD 065). "Legendary minimal-synth/wave-band from Philadelphia formed in 1979. Choosing toy instruments and live drums out of necessity, CCIS began by experimenting with a series of recording devices. The toy instruments gave way to crude drum machines and Frankenstein-type homemade instruments. Their first 7" (also included with bonus tracks in this set) introduced listeners to a noisy, unpredictable world. This 7" went on to become a classic minimal-synth record that should be included in any vinyl-collection. In 1981 they took a new direction with a darker, more sinister sound. The result was the 12" Signals from Pier Thirteen (also included in this set are 8 unreleased demo tracks from this period). The songs Cardboard Lamb and Flying Turns gained exposure through club play during the 80s and still sound fresh and up-to-date. Two live performance recordings from 1980 and 1981 are also part of this box set, including CCIS opening for the Philip Glass ensemble in Philadelphia. "A 12" vinyl, double record set containing the music of Experimental Products. If you are a long time collector of 80s indie minimal synth looking to fill out your catalog or a novice interested in starting one up, there is no better place to start than with Experimental Products. A synth duo from Philadelphia/northern Delaware USA, members Mark Wilde and Michael Gross produced 8-track gear recordings, then had their music pressed to vinyl. In 1984 they released the 3 song 12" EP Glowing in the Dark, 2000 copies. Glowing proved irresistible to DJs and became a 1985 dance club chart breakthrough. Today, many DJs and collectors consider it a classic synth record. 2 years before Glowing they released a 10 song vinyl LP titled Prototype, 300 copies. Prototype remained an obscure record until minimal synth collectors caught wind of it in the late 90s. Prototype became a high priced bidding item whenever the rare vinyl showed up on e-Bay. It seems Experimental Products had again produced what many collectors consider a classic 80s minimal synth record. VOD is now pleased to announce the reissue of Prototype to high quality vinyl. Dark ambient, noise, power electronics, all represented here before these pigeons had holes in which to fit. One LP is comprised of the now-legendary Exhumed, which was formerly released cassette-only, heard here in better shape than ever - direct-metal mastered from the original two-track mixes. The second LP is all unreleased material, highlights of which include never-heard gems from the recordings for the promotional cassette 23 Minutes Of Murder. On the flip-side, both literally and figuratively, are the electro-disco-teckno recordings used for intermission music at Hunting Lodge live shows in 1983. The final LP contains live material which was formerly cassette-only, including tracks from At The Harrington Ballroom and S/M Operations Live, as well as much of the formerly unreleased Live At The Lodge. Oft-bootlegged, this performance is pressed here direct from the original masters, representing the two-piece early noise-unit of Hunting Lodge in harrowing live intensity. | "Lest We Forget is a collection compiled from the earliest recordings by Nocturnal Emissions, a group founded by Nigel Ayers, his brother Daniel Ayers and Caroline K in 1980. It is comprised of material previously only available on cassettes as well as tracks recorded under their earlier name, The Pump. The Nocturnal Emissions were active in what has been known as cassette culture and explored the medium of underground cassette exchange in parallel with their better known vinyl releases and live performances. This series of documents offers a rare glimpse at audio sketchbooks; raw, unfinished works-in-progress and live performances by the group. It covers a wide range of musical style by a group who were committed to radical experimentation in both form and content. The box set also contains some previously unreleased tracks from the early 80s which sound surprisingly contemporary and fresh. The group has undergone several mutations since these early recordings and continued into 21st century as a solo project by Nigel Ayers. Caroline K left the group in 1984 and produced one solo album before adopting a more private life. She remained a good friend and lived in England, Sri Lanka, and finally in Italy. She married Danny Ayers in 2001. While the edit of this collection was being assembled, she took ill with leukemia and died during hospital treatment a few days later. Carolines distinctively moody electronics, vocals and bass guitar feature strongly on these albums. We offer this box set as a tribute to her life and work." "Superb compilation of French cold-wave/goth legend Norma Loy starting with their very first recorded track from 81 to unreleased demos/rehearsals/live to unreleased treasures. In 1981, Usher and Chelsea formed Norma Loy. The band launched its first EP, the first one of its cold-wave-kind in France. Norma Loy searched for their identity and multiplied there experiences on the side, leading to the creation in 1984 of their own label, CPM, which produced a second EP distributed by New Rose: Psychic Altercation whose psychoanalytic rock gave the setting for later productions. CPM developed its own philosophy and centralized the different activities of the group (musical and non musical ones: (photo)graphic ones, literature, video making, dance etc...) and controls the entire artistic production (recordings, LP covers, song books...). Utilizing magnetic tape recorders, he paves the way for the electric and the vocal paths, between the muezzin psalmody and the screaming of a rocker. He traces vague landscapes where the mitre of the white clown, the plumes of the sorcerer, the helmet of a cop and Parisian anhydride collide into polyphonic ceremonies. This box concentrates on his early works from 1977-1979 and his four officially released vinyl-LPs plus a 10" of an unreleased work from 1978. | "Man Leaving Harbour On A Ship (In A Room) is the title of a sound installation (for record player, vinyl record, speakers, found photograph, steel wires) by Vittorio Santoro to be presented in June 2010 at La BF15 Contemporary Art Space in Lyon. For the art installation of this sound piece, side A of the LP record (titled Commencement) is played over and over for a whole day. The organizers will take care that the side B (titled Conclusion) is played back only the next day. In Commencement the French sound poet, artist and composer Franck Leibovici reads a fragment from the article Das Narrenschiff als Aufklaerer by Gerhard Stadelmaier, published on January 18th, 2009 on the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Conclusion features a reading by the well-known French artist Pierre Leguillon. Recorded in Paris in March and April 2010, conceived and edited by Vittorio Santoro. The silences at the beginning and at the end of each side are integral parts of the sound work. The silence had been recorded in Paris in the night between April 8th and 9th, 2010. Edition limited to 125 numbered copies. | "Volcanic Tongue is proud to present the first ever release by the Dream/Aktion Unit, a free-thinking avant garage Ur-kestra based around the central kernel of guitarist Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), saxophonist Paul Flaherty and drummer Chris Corsano (Six Organs Of Admittance, Sunburned Hand Of The Man et al) and featuring Heather Leigh Murray (Taurpis Tula / Jandek / Charalambides) on pedal steel and vocals and Matt Heyner (No-Neck Blues Band/Test/Angelblood) on upright bass. The Dream/Aktion Unit were originally birthed as a side-project to allow Thurston Moore and Jim ORourke to fully explore the kind of ecstatic power blues that their work in Sonic Youth repeatedly implied. The addition of legendary New England saxophonist Paul Flaherty and powerhouse drummer Chris Corsano provided them with an umbilical connection straight to the source of modern musical freedom, while working to liberate them from previously articulated modes of known rock-speak. As a quartet, the group tore through a bunch of the USAs most winning festival spaces ˿ their ground-levelling F/X pedal assault at the De Stijl/Freedom From bash in Minneapolis in 2004 being a particular landmark - with both guitarists drawing creative sustenance from the kind of ego-obliterating drums/horn interaction previously articulated by players like The Reverend Frank Wright, Glenn Spearman, Denis Charles and Albert Ayler. Come 2005 ˿ with sub-underground modes enjoying a particularly unlikely shot in the sun ˿ The Dream/Aktion unit began to take on role of some kind spontaneous think-tank, with a revolving door policy towards membership and a commitment to the demands of the moment resulting in almost orchestral incarnations featuring members of Burning Star Core, Hair Police and Vampire Belt all pushing the hell out of the envelope. In May 2005 Moore, Flaherty and Corsano brought the Dream/Aktion Unit to Stirling, Scotland, for the final Le Weekend festival to be curated by David Keenan/Volcanic Tongue. With O⿿Rourke permanently out of the picture due to various film and musical commitments, Matt Heyner aka Count Heynowski of NNCK and Heather Leigh of Taurpis Tula stepped up. The results were mind-blowing, with the quintet tearing through a non-stop gush of energy/ideas without resorting to base musical concerns like dialogue or listening with your ears. This was pure simultaneity at some kind of peak of flux. Moores role was key. He would move from these kind of suggestive, shepherding chords that would work lubes of motion into the back line, where Corsano and Heyner hooked up to such a degree that it was hard to separate their individual tonal and percussive points. They sounded like a friggin combine harvester. Murray and Flaherty were floating on their own particular plane, one that worked to reconcile the insane pulse of blood from the base of their spine with the juice of pure vision. Flaherty⿿s sound touches on a whole bunch of jazz modes while re-situating the tradition somewhere way upwind of contemporary sound-as-thought while Heather Leighs exquisitely violent pedal steel stylings and free vocal improvisations seemed to touch on aspects of both Patty Waters, Lydia Lunch and Keiji Hainos flesh-extensions while resolutely refusing anything approaching previously-articulated tongue. The whole thing was recorded and mixed straight to 24 track and the results are what you have in your hands. The first ever document of the collective thought of what⿿s easily the cream of the subterranean cup. The Undetermined Dyad functions as the fulcrum of her career to date, looking back towards her experiments in group levitation with Double Leopards while extrapolating on her recent solo work. Most of all its a guitar record and one that sits comfortably alongside previous six-string monoliths like John Faheys Days Have Gone By, Donald Millers A Little Treatise On Morals and Masayuki Takayanagis Live At Zojoji Hall while sounding quite unlike any of them. Bassetts re-imagining of the instrument pushes it to the point of almost translucence, where the physical fact of the guitar itself is almost completely subsumed by echo, F/X, loops and the kind of improvisatory logic that prizes infinite expansion and organic growth over repeated tropes or riffs. Aspects of the first side -- the eerie ghost voices, the deep space echo -- recall the electrified ritual of nomadic Japanese avant gardists Taj Mahal Travellers but more immediately it sounds like a magnification of her individual contribution to Double Leopards, generating towers of electricity that move from malevolent arcs of anti-gravity and spumes of throttled single notes through to deep wormholes that do violence to feeble notions of time and space. The B-side is a little more aggressive, with the tactile sound of strings on pick-ups anchoring a gorgeous wash of all-consuming drone and garage band fuzz before Bassett cranks the tone into realms of total sonic reducer. If your concept of the guitar begins with Jimi Hendrix setting the fucking thing on fire and ends with the sound of voltage completely liberated from any kind of tonal or harmonic anchor whatsoever, then this record may well be the girl youve been praying for. Which is a nice bonus,but what about the music- well this is as odd as anything they?ve done before, feeling like a very strange magic carpet ride- touch down musically in (their own) world music, jazz, odd metallic moments, dada sound tomfoolery, oh and no real vocals one this one either. The feeling, vibe or theme that starts the album and reappears later is very desert based in my mind. Though a very strange desert, one with muilt coloured sands and camels walking along the sky and strange arabic men with huge beards trailing behind them as they give audio swimming lesson backwards. Yes this is very odd stuff indeed, Track one drags us into this strange ethnic world with wonky snake dance guitar and ethnic percussion. Track two takes us deeper into the desert where we really seem to start to loose are mind as we meet all manner of manic chanting and strange audio shenanigans, before dropping into a very odd nightmare world of bent Bernard Herrmann string work, via strange building drone tones. Next it goes into a little surreal ballet dance practice, with clunky piano and all manner of bizarre calls and sounds over the top. It all ends off with a strange ritual air via distorted instrumentation and what almost sounds like typewriter key hits .Track three seems to ushers us into a black and white scene maybe something from a odd early Jess Franco film, where strange macabre female dances out a jerky and plainly disturbing death dance. As ragged violin hover and swirl in horrific air ,female voices chant like spirits calling you over the other side and goosepimply organ weaves on like the reaper seeking out victims. So as you can see you have to expected anything and everything to happen with in these audio confines. I wont detail any more as Volcano the Bear stuff is best tripped into solo and with out set vision." - Roger Batty. |
