Title: Rawabet
Format: Cass
Label: Alter
Country: UK
Price: $10.00
“Rawabet is a live album from Helm documenting a special performance that took place alongside Maurice Louca in front of a sold-out audience at the Rawabet Theater in Cairo on October 22nd, 2015. This document is also a snapshot of a period of pan-continental touring which took Helm from Egypt to Austria and then to Canada in three days. During these shows, material from his recently released Olympic Mess album (PAN 063CD/LP, 2015) was re-imagined, expanded, and performed alongside new and "other" material, to add an alternative perspective to the original recordings. What ended up being performed in Cairo on October 22nd owed a lot to the energy of the city and the superb recording and mixing job by Khyam Allami. Rawabet can be seen as the definitive live document of Helm to date.” - Alter.

Artist: GUTHRIE, WILL
Title: People Pleaser
Format: LP
Label: Black Truffle
Country: Australia
Price: $23.00
"Nantes, France-based drummer and percussionist Will Guthrie presents People Pleaser. Initially rising to prominence in Australia as a drummer in the fields of jazz and improvised music, Guthrie later turned increasingly toward electronics and amplified percussion, developing an idiosyncratic style of electroacoustic performance characterized by shimmering metallic textures, rapid-fire textural transformations, and aggressively high volume. Guthrie has since returned to the drum kit in both solo and collaborative work, pushing at the limits of his formidable technical abilities as a player in the free jazz tradition and working variations on short rhythmic units into an endless flow of non-metered pulse. Although drawing on many aspects of Guthries past work, People Pleaser stands alone in his catalog. Working intuitively over a period of three weeks, Guthrie crafted a suite of song-length pieces that combine his drumming with electronics, field recordings, and sampled detritus. Inspired by the rough-and-ready sampling style of producers like the RZA, J Dilla, and Knxwledge, and by the endless possibilities of musique concrète, People Pleaser uses a highly divergent array of sound sources, building pieces from drum and percussion tracks left over from other projects, audio ripped from skate videos, noise electronics, fragments of a police interrogation, and anything else ready to hand. Guthries unique rhythmic sensibility is the thread drawing all these elements together, his drum performances propulsively rhythmic yet insistently irregular in a way that sometimes brings to mind the uniquely open rhythmic space carved out by early Weather Report and other classic fusion. Drawing together manifold influences in an entirely sui generis way, People Pleaser is a raw, exciting, and surprisingly accessible peek into the laboratory of a unique sensibility. Designed by Stephen OMalley. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, August 2016." - Black Truffle.

Title: Filmmusik 2
Format: LP
Label: Bureau B
Country: Germany
Price: $23.00
"Bureau B present part two of their Filmmusik double release. In 1975, Conrad Schnitzler recorded various pieces of music to accompany films which had yet to be made. Fittingly, he labelled this collection of songs Filmmusik. Only one of the tracks - "Gute Fahrt" ("Nice Journey") - would ultimately be paired with a film, now traceable on the internet for all to see. The music is included on Part 1 of Bureau Bs Filmmusik double release (BB 244CD/LP, 2016), erroneously entitled "02/1980". Why the incorrect title? The tapes, which served as source material for the labels two Filmmusik releases, were copied onto two data carriers then mislabeled. To be precise, one label was accurate - Filmmusik 1975 A - but the other, Filmmusik 1980 B, was not. All the tracks had been created in the same year, so it should have read "1975 B". In the absence of actual song titles, Bureau B simply gave them numbers. Not knowing of the above mentioned film at the time, the label called the track "02/1980", when they should have called it "02/1975 B" or, as they would later discover, "Gute Fahrt". Shortly after, Bureau B released Filmmusik 1 and Jin Kawai, curator of the official Schnitzler website, contacted the label with the information. In 2009, whilst sorting through reels of film (some shot by Schnitzler himself) and music to upload to the site, Kawai was particularly drawn to one piece entitled "Gute Fahrt". Were there any more tracks like this? Schnitzler told him there were and sent Kawai all of the other recordings. One half of Filmmusik 2 comprises tracks from the 1975 series, the other half is a 23-minute piece with the title "Lichtpunkte und schwarze Zeichen". This music was actually written for a film in 1978. The label was delighted to find it in 2015 and enthusiastically searched the Schnitzler archives for more of the same. This led the Bureau B to the 1975 recordings and the rest is history." - Bureau B.

Title: Magnetband: Experimenteller Elektronik-Underground DDR 1984-1989
Format: LP
Label: Bureau B
Country: Germany
Price: $23.00
"Inspired by punk and post punk, vibrant scenes dedicated to independent self-actualization by means of self-distributed cassettes - the cheapest and fastest medium - were developing on each side of the Cold Wars confrontational line. Albeit, under quite different circumstances. While there was a DIY euphoria in the West, which would also have had ideological motives, subcultures in the East simply had no other means. Even the first act of replication meant moving into illegal territory, since every duplication had to be authorized by State authorities, just like anything else. The protagonists - musicians, painters, poets, filmmakers, performers - crossed genres and jumped back-and-forth between various styles. Disillusioned, and often ready to jump towards the West, these border crossers defined themselves rather somewhere between non- and anti-political, pursuing self-actualization strategies by means of an extended niche existence. They took refuge in the search for ways of creative self-assertion and communication, looking out in sensual despair, utilizing sounds of rage, linguistic wit and a passion for tinkering. Driven by ubiquitous boredom, equipped with plenty of time and free of economic restraints (or rather possibilities), labor was performed with no regard to the final product, hardly documented and almost never published. With the partial opening of State-controlled media and cultural sites accompanying the beginning agony of the State, conditions changed. Suddenly there was radio airplay of supposedly illegal cassettes and weird noise performed at Palast Der Republik. In the end, full albums by these "other bands" were released on the State-owned label AMIGA. The collapse following soon after relieved the activists remaining in the country who continually had to re-position themselves. Many took different roads, some leading to Rammstein, others to Raster-Noton or groups like To Rococo Rot and Tarwater. The artifacts from that era tell of a stance of refusal in practice. Between being excluded and self-exclusion, truly wayward sounds and means of expression were developed. Bert Papenfuß, Ronald Lippok, Bernd Jestram and Bo Kondren compiled two companion CDs accompanying the long sold-out Zonic special edition Spannung. Leistung. Widerstand. Magnetbanduntergrund DDR 1979-1990, released in 2006, of which the more experimental-electronic pieces are herewith available on the music market for the first time. Features: A. F. Moebius, Kriminelle Tanzkapelle, Heinz & Franz, Magdalene Keibel Combo, Choo Choo Flame, Stoffwechsel, Corp Cruid, Taymur Streng/Ornament & Verbrechen, Der Demokratische Konsum, Gesichter, Ihr Arschlöcher, Aponeuron, and Robert Linke." - Bureau B.

Title: Living With Victoria
Format: LP
Label: Captured Tracks
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
“The Summer of 1985 was a rather pleasant one for Martin Newell. Now past 30, and sick of being at odds with the London music industry, he decided to give up – not music exactly – but any attempt to make a living from it. Though Newell and his new musical partner Giles Smith continued to casually record and Under Wartime Conditions continued to pick up good reviews, including one in the UKs Sound magazine, there was no intent to continue. During this sporadic period of recording that the Cleaners came to, quite nonchalantly, is the release of the cassette Living With Victoria Grey.
After sending the nearly unmarked cassette to a few fanzines and selling the cassettes for $2 apiece (or even giving them away), Newell once again forgot about music until a young man named Andy McQueen offered Newell an interesting deal: though there would be little money, he and Smith could record a high quality Cleaners record without the interference of a producer. The two began working on "Going to England. Although 7 of the songs from Living With Victoria Grey would appear on the album, the cassette was all but forgotten, the only master copy having been lost. It wasnt until almost 10 years later that Newell was approached by a man hed never met before who said, "You sent me this many years ago and told me to look after it. I did. I thought youd like it back now." It was the master copy of Living With Victoria Grey!
Over 20 years after its initial quiet release, Captured Tracks is pleased to present Living With Victoria Grey on vinyl for the first time as part of the final installment of the Cleaners from Venus collection.” - Captured Tracks.

Title: My Back Wages
Format: LP
Label: Captured Tracks
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
“Considered the last ever Cleaners From Venus release, My Back Wages is comprised primarily of songs written in 1992 while Martin Newell was quarantined with the Chicken Pox. While some songs made it onto Newells The Greatest Living Englishman, many fell into obscurity, never to be released. That is until some 8 years later when long time Cleaners supporters JAR Music Germany, a small DIY label, released a collection entitled My Back Wages. Newell claims to have had no knowledge of the release, but the punning title of the album has his paw prints all over it.
Newell spent the years between 1992 and 2000 focusing on his writing, poetry, and gardening, and when the release surfaced in 2000, he had little recollection of even sending the songs to his friends at JAR. When Newell heard it, he was surprised to find that musical additions had been made to the tracks, which polished up his spontaneously and sometimes sloppy recording style. Newell felt touched that anyone would be interested, or even care about something which hed regarded as a rag-bag of demoes. Conversely, as a natural musical anarchist, the idea that anyone, anywhere, considered that they knew better than he did annoyed him.
This version of My Back Wages as issued by Captured Tracks is Martin Newells own "producers cut" of oddities, out-takes and "orphan songs." "Crane Drivers," for instance, was made after a friend with a brand new Roland U20 keyboard lent it to Newell for two days, challenging him to make a complete song using only the sounds contained within its pre-sets. "Haunt Your House" was a demo written for The Damned, who were short of songs for an album at that time. It was never used.
Over 20 years later, Captured Tracks is thrilled to give Newell the chance to release this material on his own terms and put the Cleaners to rest once and for all.” - Captured Tracks.

Title: Number Thirteen
Format: LP
Label: Captured Tracks
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
“Following the release of Living With Victoria Grey, Martin Newell, under the Cleaners from Venus moniker, once again began taking his musical career seriously, releasing a few singles and two vinyl LPs. After busking and loosely recording some demos, Cleaners from Venus signed to the independent label Deltic Records. Previously, Newell and Nelson gained quite a bit of media attention for their guitar driven rock by refusing to tour by anything but bicycle as the Brotherhood of Lizards. This generated a lot of attention for the band, but unfortunately Nelson left for other adventures before it could fully come to fruition.
What we find in Number Thirteen is a transitional period for Newell. Intended as a demo, the cassette received positive feedback, but ultimately led nowhere. At 37-years-old, Martin Newell reflected upon the almost two decades of hard work and musical activity which had led him to this point. One morning he got up and began to coolly put his instruments away. He turned his small upstairs music studio into a room for books and writing. He decided to turn to the life of gardening that hed always thought upon.
However, the simple life of a gardener would not last long. Newell soon found renowned with his poetry and writing, penning a semi-regular column for Londons Independent, appearing on many TV and radio programs and publishing several collections. Finally, in Autumn of 1992, through another series of connections and coincidences, he was asked if he would like to make a solo album, with none other than XTCs Andy Partridge in the producers chair. The first thing that he did, before dusting off his long abandoned instruments, was send Andy Partridge a handful of songs from the Cleaners from Venus Number Thirteen cassette. Number Thirteen is one of the many stepping stone releases that have led Martin Newell and the Cleaners From Venus through their storied career. Available for the first time on vinyl, and seeing its first wide release, Captured Tracks is pleased to give you Number Thirteen.” - Captured Tracks.

Price: $27.00
“The legendary lo-fi band Cleaners from Venus was formed in the small town of Wivenhoe, England at the turn of 1980s by Martin Newell – a rock singer and part-time kitchen porter with a love of sunny 1960s pop music, punk rock, and musical comedy. He never cared much for any kind of musical rule book and broke new ground with music that garnered a cult following and a highly-influential sound that continues to inspire.
These four albums mark the final chapter in the unveiling of the entire discography from the band, spanning the end of Martin Newells long, storied run as the Cleaners from Venus (1985-1992). Included are Living with Victoria Grey, Number Thirteen and My Back Wages, which Newell considers a new release as it is finally being released as he originally intended it. The fourth album is collection of rarities and unreleased material from the time that My Back Wages was recorded, called Extra Wages. This beautiful 4xLP box set includes original liners written by Newell himself with unreleased photos and a 16 page book of Newells poetry. Each LP includes a download card.” - Captured Tracks.

Title: Teatime Assortment
Format: CD
Label: Captured Tracks
Country: USA
Price: $12.00
“Since before he was even able to play an instrument, Martin Newell was messing around with home-recordings. Having grown up in the Far East, Newell returned to his home of England at age 13 with just a little 3-inch spool tape-recorder and his first guitar. At age 14 he wrote his first song, not even knowing any chords. His song writing continued through is teens and into his 20s, when he purchased a Sony reel-to-reel recorder and 12 string guitar. It is this early songwriting that led him working with a wide variety of musicians, recording in beautiful studios and forming his many projects such as Cleaners from Venus and Brotherhood of Lizards. But it was this early songwriting and recording that led him to find that he was happiest when recording by himself, with minimal equipment. As Newell often says, "Actually, I preferred the demos."
Having upgraded himself from reel-to-reel to a Tascam Pocketstudio and digitizing some of his archaic recording knowledge, Newell set out to begin home recording again. The tracks on this collection run from 2010 to mid 2014. Some are recordings loosely based on movie themes and soundtracks for imaginary films. Some are instrumentals from a collection called The Late District, while others are from a recent album Return to Bohemia, which saw a small release in England. This recent resurgence in creative strength, along with the success and newfound popularity of Cleaners from Venus, have all led up to Teatime Assortment. Think of it as a "Best of New Newell." A true wordsmith, Newell himself has put simply why one might be compelled to take a listen here: "If youre the sort of person who likes this kind of thing, then this is the sort of thing youll probably like.” - Captured Tracks.

Title: Close Up
Format: LP
Label: Captured Tracks
Country: United States
Price: $13.00
“The Outsiders, hailing from Wimbledon, England, were one of the many bands to rise up through the UK’s punk explosion of the late 70s. Citing the Velvet Underground as their primary influence, Fronted by Adrian Borland, who went on to form the seminal post-punk band The Sound following the demise of the band, The Outsiders gained exposure through opening for acts such as The Jam and The Vibrators. Bob Lawrence (bass) and Adrian Janes (a/k/a Jan, drums) rounded out the band.
The Outsiders were the first UK punk band to self-release a full album -- their first LP Calling on Youth) --on their own Raw Edge label. With Close Up, the band matured and further developed into the punk sound that was clearly a gateway to Borlands work with The Sound. The band were clearly influenced by the Detroit rock sound of The Stooges and were even joined on stage by Iggy Pop himself for their rendition of "Raw Power". Long out of print on vinyl, this reissue provides a great look into not only the development of the legendary Adrian Borland, but also a look into the transitional phase of UK rock from classic to punk. Available on vinyl only in a run of 1,000.” - Captured Tracks.

Title: All At Once
Format: Double LP + 7"
Label: Captured Tracks
Country: USA
Price: $35.00
“Captured Tracks is pleased to present the Stockholm Monsters full catalogue in this special vinyl only reissue. Formed in Manchester in 1980, Stockholm Monsters were signed with Factory Records in 1981. Discovered at a show in Manchester when the band was still teens, New Order’s Peter Hook took the young band under his wing and went on to produce the majority of the band’s catalogue, under the alias Be Music. Their first single, “Fairy Tales”, didn’t appear until 1982, due to the tardiness of the songs producer Martin Hannett. Drawing early praise from influential music magazine’s NME and Melody Maker, along with touring with New Order, the band seemed set for success. However through numerous line-up changes, delays in recording and the onslaught of bands such as the Happy Mondays the band never quite hit their mark.
During their time with the Factory Records, Stockholm Monsters released one LP (Alma Mater) and a series of 7”s and singles including a scathing take down of Factory’s primary indie label rival, entitled “How Corrupt is Rough Trade”. Available in a limited run, this complete collection gives new light to one of Factory’s lost artists.” - Captured Tracks.

Format: Double LP
Label: Cold Spring
Country: UK
Price: $30.00
Comes in a gatefold sleeve with a 12" booklet of unseen images and includes a download card. "The entire Transparent recordings released for the first time, completely remastered from the unedited tapes. Zos Kia was formed by John Gosling (Mekon), John Balance (Coil) and Min - with guest Peter Sleazy Christopherson (Throbbing Gristle). Their one and only album, Transparent, was released on August 23rd, 1983 in a cassette only edition on the now defunct Austria label Nekrophile. They were the first released recordings of both Coil and Zos Kia. It was reissued years later by Coil (Threshold House/Eskaton). Includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks by Ake (pre-Zos Kia). The music on Transparent is genuinely unsettling and disturbing, with a more primal Industrial feel than the Coil album which followed; Scatology (1984). "The "icon of post-everything", Mike Cooper, returns to Discrepant with a recording of a live set recorded at the Controindicazioni Festival of Improvised Music in Rome in 2003. Originally released as a CDr via his Hipshot label. The music moves very slowly through four movements: "Reluctant Swimmer", "Movies Is Magic", "Virtual Swimmer", and "Dolphins". Praise from an unknown source: "Floating in out of the exotic ether and disappearing like smoke, engulfed in the alien hugeness of nature... a very elegant set by a visionary artist." Mike Cooper on the recording: "The first half is played on my old 1920s National tri-plate lap steel guitar and the second half on my Vietnamese electric lap steel. I also sing two songs along the way. Movies Is Magic by Van Dyke Parks and Dolphins by Fred Neil. It was the first time I had ever sung the last song." Using contact mic recordings of various Turkish instruments - saz, cura, and tanbur (played by Remi Solliez) - Jeanneau alchemically collages them with his archival recordings of South East Asia to create a surreal space between the instruments tones and resonances with the other-worldly beauty of the field recordings." - Discrepant.

Format: LP
Label: Efficient Space
Country: Australia
Price: $25.00
“Efficient Space continue to expose Australias esoteric musical history with Oz Waves - a collection of 80s DIY recordings, compiled by odd wave anthropologist Steele Bonus. Definitive proof that inhabitants of the Down Underground were links in a global network of creative kooks, Oz Waves connects those who utilized mobile recording rigs and small press releases to create and disseminate misfit synth-punk, tape loop experiments, and inner city pop. Through overseas mail order exchanges, anonymous groups like Zerox Dreamflesh could find place on Belgian compilations, while Chris and Cosey lullabied their son to sleep with Irena Xero and her interdisciplinary art collective Zip. Bonus selects ten survivors from the fertile period (1982-1989), most of which were only issued on cassette in tiny editions of five to one-hundred copies. M Squared affiliates Prod join the extraterrestrial Software Seduction, He Dark Ages minimal wave neglect and the irreverent cut ups of The Horse Hes Sick and MK Ultra & the Assassins of Light. The remaining tracks have been sourced from musicians private archives and are being officially released on Oz Waves for the first time - Andy Rantzens industrial dub Itch-E & Scratch-E precursor, the buoyant vocal-drone of Ironing Music, and Moral Fibro, Sydneys short lived answer to Weekend and Marine Girls. With detailed track-by-track notes, lines are drawn to Severed Heads, Scattered Order, and other antipodean post-punk royalty. As a DJ, Steele Bonus has gained notoriety via the exquisite selections that form his ongoing mix series Odd Waves. Sydney-born, Amsterdam-based, his graphic design has not only been responsible for sleeves on Efficient Space, but also trusted Amsterdam connoisseurs Music From Memory and Young Marcos Safe Trip. Title: La Maison Des 5 Éléments
Format: LP
Label: Ergot/Catch Wave Ltd.
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
“Lawalrée has spent his whole life in Belgium. He studied at the Institut Supérieur de Musique et de Pédagogie in Namur, and has composed over 450 works spread across 20 albums. First Meeting comprises music he put out on his own Editions Walrus imprint between 1978 and 1982 on three LPs, Brins DHerbes, Vis a Vis and Clandestin.
In the liner notes, he speaks on his musical interests during this period saying, "I was listening all kinds of music! The Beatles, Brian Eno… I love all of the composers of the classical avant-garde: Erik Satie, John Cage, Stockhausen, Morton Feldman, Pierre Boulez... and the city of Brussels."
Eno considered releasing Lawalrées music on his Obscure Records before it folded, but Lawalrées reach in the US was limited to titles distributed by the English composer Gavin Bryars. The influence of Satie and Eno are evident in Lawalrées song titles—"Musique Satieerique" and "Listen TO The Quiet Voice," which takes its name from an Oblique Strategies prompt.
Lawalrée now spends his time playing piano and organ in church on a weekly basis, his musical focus having turned for the liturgical over the past two decades.” - Matt McDermott. “Dominique Lawalrée (b. 1954) is a composer born and based in Brussels. First Meeting is Lawalrées first archival release to date. Culled from four different albums originally self-published on his private label Editions Walrus, circa 1978-1982, this compilation highlights the composers unique sense of ambient and minimal composition. Originally considered for release on Brian Enos Obscure Records, Lawalrées music is now no longer hidden.

In this collection, the listener finds the sounds of piano, synthesizers, percussion, wurlitzer, organ, and voice, all performed by Lawalrée. Using these tools Dominique creates miniature themes that gallop across the speakers in slow motion, stretching our normal sense of dynamics and color, effortlessly widening the stereo plane. On “Musique Satieerique,” Dominique pays homage to the influence of Satie with simple repeated piano figures and a lush field of organs and flutes. And on other selections, like “Le Maison Des 5 Elements,” he takes a more wistful, ambient approach, layering keyboard lines, and invoking found/tape sounds to create a hypnogogic world of his own. Childlike in its playfulness and surreal to the bone, the music spins like a carrousel placed inside the Rothko Chapel. Lawalrée’s sense of timbre, tone, and overarching composition is like an impression of a home movie whose charm lies in its knowledge of intimacy, shared by few. An incantation of innocence.” - Ergot/Catch Wave Ltd.

Artist: COURTIS, ALAN
Title: Los Galpones
Format: LP
Label: Fabrica
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"Los Galpones is the latest solo full-length release conjured by the prolific Buenos Aires-based composer Alan Courtis (aka Anla Courtis). He has straddled the international noise underground and the academic-centered modern composition scenes since the early 1990s. As a solo artist, with the Argentine experimental group Reynols, and in collaborations with Pauline Oliveros, Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple), Lasse Marhaug, Aaron Moore (Volcano the Bear), Okkyung Lee, and Daniel Menche among others, Courtis has amassed an impressive discography. This latest album contains four dark and grimacing industrial-tinged drone pieces. Employing the electric guitar, the violin, springs and other found objects, Courtiss soundscape is at times oppressive and dense -- perhaps a reflection on the post-industrial urban landscape of his native Buenos Aires. This album should be played loud." - Fabrica.

Title: 2017
Format: LP
Label: Faro
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
“It has been a while since we last heard from Adam Stonehouse, the genius behind The Hospitals - one of my favorite bands of the last decade or so. Adam is back with Angel (which is also Chris Gunn of the Hunches, Spender Clark of the Skaters, Rachel Blotzer and Vincent Ross). Synthed-out rock & roll with both pop and experimental sides to it, Angel is the logical (well, as much as Stonehouse and logic go together) next step from The Hospitals - but keep in mind we are talking an 8 year step from Hairdryer Peace to now, so do not expect the fantastic chaos of Hairdryer Peace. Angel is a different kind of weird, one rooted in T-Rex, Throbbing Gristles Jazz-Funk Greats, Tangerine Dreams Sorcerer, dub, David Essexs Rock On, Bobby Brown, Negativeland, and Suicides second album.  Pretty fantastic.” - Faro.

Artist: BELIEVERS, THE
Title: Memo From Otter
Format: LP
Label: Feeding Tube
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"The Believers were, in many ways, the flagship band of the Apostasy Recordings empire. Their roots were in the Hampshire College-based experimental outfit, Son Of Earth - Flesh in Bone Trio (generally shortened to Son Of Earth), via Matt Krefting and John Shaw. Also on board were Anna Klein (player with many woefully under-documented ensembles) and Jessi Swenson, Esq. (who was associated with various Scott Foust projects, and would go on to 50 Foot Women). But much of this other work was abstract weirdo-ism. The Believers were, more or less, a rock band, and they kinda fucking ruled. They recorded an album for Ben Chasnys planned label almost a decade ago, but the release never ended up happening, and the Believers split into their component parts not long afterwards. But our memories of their throbbing presence and carefully planned wardrobe choices would overwhelm us some nights, and wed find ourselves startled awake, covered with sweat, thinking we had missed several important boats by not documenting their passage in the proper way. In the intervening years, the four Believers have gone off to different pastimes. Some are related to music, some are not. And it took some wheedling on our parts, but we finally got this live LP out of them. And it cooks. One side was recorded in 04 at the old Flywheel in Easthampton, and provides a rather clear portrait of their sweetly thuggish pop dynamism. The flip was recorded at the same venue in 06, with guest squeedle provided by Conrad Capistran and Joshua Burkett (aka Tarp). Although we often think of Tarps sound as retiring, here it is aggressive. And it adds a strangely perfect width to the droogly and angular lurch of their inventions. A beautiful album. Long overdue." - Byron Coley, 2016. Edition of 400.

Title: Songs We Taught the Lord Volume One
Format: LP
Label: Feeding Tube
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"As I recall, the idea seemed pretty reasonable at the time. It was late 1996. Id met Fahey a couple of years earlier, and partly as an outgrowth of that meeting he had decided he wanted to meet and play with noise musicians. This resulted in a lot of music that made his olden fans weep, but who was I to argue with The Great Koonaklaster? Anyway, it was late 96 and Fahey wanted to play some gigs on the east coast. He also wanted Thurston to be on the bill with him, and so Mr. Moore asked me for suggestions about who might be cool to duet with. We ruled out a lot of people for various reasons, then had a flash about asking the great Pep Lester (aka Phil Milstein). Although best known as a writer and designer, Phil had also done lots of music in various configurations, and I was hoping hed deign to play the musical saw he had started practicing a few years earlier. Phil had other ideas, though, mostly revolving around the tape creations and loops hed been doing with Thalia Zedeks band, Uzi, in the mid 80s. Thankfully, he also agreed to play some saw, and you will hear some of that instruments beautiful tones floating around the tape jabber and guitar circularity that makes up much of this records basis. This show was recorded on the first night of Faheys East coast jaunt, at the Iron Morse Music Hall in Northampton MA. The audience was primed for transcendental waterfalls, and didnt seem too delighted by Phil and Thurstons opening set, but fuck em. Fahey was enthralled. And when we pulled the tapes out to listen to for the first time in many a year, we were all pretty chuffed about how nuts and timeless the music sounded. Although the second nights sound was previously issued by Chris Corsanos Hot Cars Warp Records label, this is the first issue for this fantastic set. Roll yourself a fatty and swing!" - Byron Coley, 2016. Edition of 400.

Title: Songs We Taught the Lord Volume Two
Format: LP
Label: Feeding Tube
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"This album reissues the final recording (thus far) of the Milstein/Moore duo. It was originally released in 1997 by Chris Corsanos Hot Cars Warp Records label. Chris had a choice of this tape -- recorded December 4, 1996 at the Middle East in Cambridge MA -- or the one from the previous night at the Iron Horse in Northampton (FTR 288LP). He chose this one, and the first volume was scheduled to appear on the Ecstatic Yod label. Why it never happened, who knows? Not me! The set was recorded opening for guitarist John Fahey, shortly after a horrible accident in Harvard Square, which involved Faheys belt breaking in the middle of Brattle St. and having his pants drop to his ankles as a result. Unable to bend enough to reach his feet, it fell upon one of the opening musicians to lend a hand. And I feel as though the incredible sense of horror involved in that process infuses this concert. Thurstons guitar was quite unhinged that night, and Phils gabble of tape-voices had a relentless edge that seems designed to induce claustrophobic reactions. It is a bravura performance by any measure, and surely one of the wildest collaborations Thurston had been involved in up to that time. Listening now, I can only hope these two do more work together in the 21st century. We could all certainly use it. Remastered from original source tapes, this new edition of the album is best heard loud. Who cares what the neighbors think? Theyre probably fascists anyway." - Byron Coley, 2016. Edition of 400.

Title: Seizure
Format: LP
Label: Flying Nun
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
“Where does one start with Chris Knox? A Musician, artist, cartoonist, director and much more, Knox is the godfather of alternative New Zealand music. While, Seizure, originally released in 1988, is certainly not the start for Chris Knox it is often considered his first proper solo album. Though, in fairness, there is nothing proper about it as it explores the surreal, the political, the satirical and, sometimes, simply the crazy, all of which would never been seen on the hit parade. Yet, musically its an album that should have been there. Packed with brilliantly skewered hooks and humorously scathing lyrics, Seizure is a lo-fi mix of punk, indie rock and pop that works perfectly. With its DIY recording, wit and melody, Seizure highlights why Knox is considered one of New Zealands finest songwriters. From fronting early NZ punk band The Enemy to Toy Love and then the Tall Dwarfs through to helping launch Flying Nun Records recording the likes of The Clean, the Dunedin Double and more. Its near impossible to fit his entire bio into this space. And, his influence has reached out well beyond these shores inspiring generations of musicians - no better shown than on the benefit album (Stroke: Songs of Chris Knox) released as a fundraiser following his stroke in 2009, which featured the likes of Bill Callahan, Yo La Tengo, Lou Barlow, Stephin Merritt and many more. From the simple pop of "The Face of Fashion", through to the driving force of "Wanna!!" and the strangely uplifting brood of "My Dumb Luck" - all that without even mentioning "Not Given Lightly" , the love song to end all love songs - Seizure, despite our dislike of the word, is a legendary release in the Flying Nun catalogue. Now, re-issued again on LP and CD, with the audio taken direct from the original master tape to vinyl lacquer, the releases also features the original cover art from its first pressing.” - Flying Nun.

Artist: TALL DWARFS
Title: Weeville
Format: LP
Label: Flying Nun
Country: USA
Price: $21.00
“As the opening liner notes proclaim, Weeville is "the first straightforward LP by Tall Dwarfs - uh...in terms of having the same number of tracks on each side -- both of which play at the same speed and which aint a compilation." Nonetheless, their 1990 release is filled with the Tall Dwarfs eclectic mix of homespun psychedelia, densely textured pop songs and a wallop of hard nosed punk.
The Tall Dwarfs are a partnership between New Zealand home-recording pioneers Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate. A duo, who have been making music together since 1977, first in New Zealands early punk band, The Enemy, followed by Toy Love. In 1981, Chris and Alec returned as the Tall Dwarfs. They purchased a four track, and over the next 30 plus years would release wonderfully demented records and go on to influence bands such as Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Neutral Milk Hotel and countless more.
Now, re-issued again on LP and CD, Weeville is wired with hypnotic tunes, weird and wonderful instruments and brilliant songwriting. Whether that be the raw spookiness and two guitar harmony of "Breath" and "Crawl" or the oddly compelling "Skin Of My Teeth" and "Bodies," all brushed with a scent of the macabre. Along with a 20 page booklet featuring the duos individual art and design, Weeville is a fantasy land built on tape loops, feedback and distortion. Its pop music just how they like it.” - Flying Nun.

Artist: DESMADRADOS SOLDADOS DE VENTURA
Title: The Grand Celestial Purge
Format: 4 LP Box
Label: Golden Lab
Country: UK
Price: $107.00
"The eighth Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura album, The Grand Celestial Purge, is a three-hour, four LP box set of psychedelic musings on the departed musicians of 2016. Produced by Richard Formby and recorded at a converted church in Leeds, this is DSDVs most melodious and spacious album to date. You can hear clear nods to The Grateful Dead throughout as well as fragments of Can, Carlos Santana and John McLaughlins Love Devotion Surrender (1973) and even Tim Buckleys Blue Afternoon (1969) band. Drowned in tape echo and with a Wally Heider-style snap to the drum sound, the recording has all the traits of a classic Formby production. Gone is much of the blur of guitars that shrouded the bands previous albums in cacophony; Whilst still present here and there, its been replaced with a somewhat virtuoso level of interplay that smacks of a bygone, pre-ironic era in rock music where sincerity, dedication to the craft of improvisation, and the desire to transcend the mundane via heightened, sustained hive-mind mentality was all that mattered." - Golden Lab. Personnel: David Birchall - guitar; Andrew Cheetham - drums; Richard Formby - synths; Dylan Hughes - guitar; Nick Mitchell - guitar, bass; Dom Tanner - guitar; Otto Willberg - bass.

Title: Jaguar Ride: Memoir Of An Electric Eel
Format: Book
Label: Hozac
Country: USA
Price: $41.00
"The Electric Eels have left a serious scar on the face of music like few other originals have so far, a complex yet primitive pulsation of audio animosity shot through the universe right at the exact moment when nobody could comprehend it. Chicago may be the Midwest hub population-wise, but we all know that Ohio was punks true Mesopotamia, and nothing spells that out more succinctly as the Electric Eels. Founding guitarist Brian McMahons long-awaited memoir of his wild proto-punk days is finally here, the first-ever book covering the primordial ooze of Clevelands wiry mutants in all their prickly-detailed glory. Over the course of 300 pages, you can really crawl inside the brain of one of Americas finest overlooked musical miscreants, a fascinating glimpse into the vivid details and sickening dreams of one half of the songwriting contribution to the electric eels demented noise. To be so ahead of their time with so little to lose, now just the utterance of their name holds instant reverence with the punk cognoscenti, but that took a while. Once the meat of their recordings was unearthed and had time to circulate, now everyone is tripping over themselves to drool at their feet, and rightfully so. Jaguar Ride: Memoir Of An Electric Eel taps into the once impenetrable inner space of life around this ground-breaking band quite effortlessly. Like the eye of the universe opening up just enough for your weary legs to slip past and dangle in its toxic waters, McMahon leads us through his haziest experiences with incredible recollections of what it felt like to stand at the edge of the cliff of possibilities. The Electric Eels were true originals that streaked across time and space for a very short amount of time in the early-to-mid 1970s, creating nothing short of atonal atrocities glistening with punk promise. Deranged rust belt pop songs blanched in chemical waste and chopped mercilessly with a broken food processor and left for dead, only to be rediscovered when the coast was clear for cultures so noxiously curdled to finally thrive. Now that experience is finally here in book form for you to absorb and indulge, and as the mysteries of the eels go many layers deep, fear not and embody their pioneering spirit, finally in print. -VictimofTime.com

Title: Regression
Format: LP
Label: Ideal Recordings
Country: Sweden
Price: $19.00
"Wolf Eyes Nate Youngs Regression series has provided some of the most compelling dread-electronics spewed out by the North American underground in years, with instalments released by Demdike Stares DDS label and Aaron Dilloways Hanson, as well as NNA Tapes and others. It all began back in 2009 with this first volume issued by Joachim Nordwalls Ideal label, an incredible set thats now being released on vinyl here for the first time ever. Young is one of those artists whose output is instantly recognizable, his take on primitive electronics is both innovative and unnerving, and in recent years has really dominated the stylistic direction pursued by Wolf Eyes. Its a kind of creaky, bare-boned deconstruction of classic horror scoring jolted by noise and industrial motifs, sounding somewhere between Demdike Stares early work, John Carpenter, and Mica Levis by-now-classic soundtrack to Under The Skin (2014). You could neither classify Regression as a noise record nor an ambient one, instead the synth dissections and tape treatments more closely reference early electronic music. "Trapped" offers little of the claustrophobia suggested by its title, although the continual woody knocking sounds and filthy oscillations do engender a sense of unease, while "Dread" brings to mind the Desmond Briscoe soundtrack to Nigel Kneales The Stone Tape (1972). "Under The Skin" returns to the more esoteric, intangible sound designs that characterized the albums opening, writhing around in a spluttering, tactile fashion thats at once sonically rather beautiful but deeply sinister, modulating through grisly synthesizer gestures while more textural, percussive sounds flood through dub-style tape delays. Young has an uncanny ability to make sonic extremes sound incredibly seductive, and this volume is perhaps the most engrossing exposition of that unique ability. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering. Edition of 500." - Ideal Recordings.

Title: Cozmic Corridors
Format: LP
Label: Mental Experience
Country: Spain
Price: $26.00
“Includes download code. Mental Experience present a reissue of Cozmic Corridors self-titled album. Cozmic Corridors is an underground kraut-kosmische monster, recorded and produced circa 1972-73 in Cologne by Toby "The Mad Twiddler" Robinson for his Pyramid label. The album was apparently released as an ultra-limited handmade edition back in the early 70s, but no original copies have surfaced. Featuring Mythos drummer Hans-Jürgen Pütz on percussion and effects, alongside synth/keyboard freak Alex Meyer, poet/vocalist Pauline Fund, and the mysterious guitarist Peter Förster. Cozmic Corridors is an album if tripped-out electronic ambient soundscapes, dark atmospheres, drones, plenty of MiniMoog, gothic Hammond organ, Rhodes, electric and 12-string acoustic guitars, ritual chants, effects, and horror cinematic vibes. It is not advisable to listen to this alone in the dark. RIYL: Terry Riley, Cluster, Ash Ra Tempel, Popol Vuh, Emtidi, Jacula, Franco Leprino, Dead Can Dance. Master tape sound; Insert with detailed liner notes by Alan Freeman, head boss at Ultima Thule and author of The Crack In The Cosmic Egg (1996).” - Mental Experience.

“ORIGINAL SEALED PRESSING FROM 1974! Recorded in 1970 and 1971, after a difficult spinal surgery following a severe warehouse accident. “…the basic home fidelity, with vocals recorded in a bathroom for echoing ambience, adds to the strangeness, the tunes also sounding on occasion like holiday carols by and for celebrants not quite certain theyll live to see another Christmas. Though not every fan of rare psychedelia will agree with this assessment, it sounds immeasurably better than Microminiature Love, as the songwriting is substantially superior; the melodies far more varied and affecting; and the vision far more likably personal.” —Richie Unterberger, AllMusic. Recorded in 1968 (not 1969, as previously reported), not terribly long after the material eventually released as "Microminiature Love", Grimwood sounds like it emanates from another universe entirely. Straightforward on the one hand, yet fascinatingly and psychedelically abstruse on the other, Grimwood remains an essential "outsider” acid-folk document that sits comfortably (and irreplaceably) alongside Spence, Grudzien, Tweddle, and a few select others. “ Released in 1974 and rescued from deep inside Yonks’ storage space/weirdo museum. “ORIGINAL SEALED PRESSING FROM 1974! Self-recorded in 1971 & ’72, Michael Lee Yonkers has often been referred to as Michaels "country” album. It is many folks’ favorite of his early works, and is likely the weirdest. The roughhewn quality of these recordings has caused listeners to make comparisons with other “real people” outsiders like Grudzien and the Holy Modal Rounders, but there are more obvious, well-known comparisons (Townes Van Zandt) that are at least as appropriate. There are clear references to various classic country stylings in these songs, even as Michaels unique distillation of their influence lends a delightfully skewed mischievousness to the proceedings. Released in 1974 and rescued from deep inside Yonks’ storage space/weirdo museum. While they last!” - Treehouse. Some have slight storage wear/dinged corners. Best copies go first..

Artist: MASIN, GIGI/CHARLES HAYWARD
Title: Les Nouvelles Musiques De Chambre Volume 2
Format: LP
Label: Modern Classics
Country: USA
Price: $24.00
Housed in a Stoughton, "tip-on" jacket; First ever vinyl reissue. "Following the reissue of the entire recorded output of South London-based experimental act This Heat and its successor, Camberwell Now, Modern Classics Recordings holds the lens up to a special split album created by one of the driving forces behind those groups - drummer Charles Hayward - in collaboration with Italian musician Gigi Masin, whose looping, rhythmic, electronic compositions have seen his cult following grow in his four decades as a recording artist. Originally released on Belgiums Sub Rosa label in 1989, Les Nouvelles Musiques De Chambre Volume 2 is a split LP on which Masins eight tracks occupy side A and Charles Haywards long-form piece (at 21 minutes long), Thames Water Authority, occupies side B. Geography may have separated the two artists, who each recorded their pieces in isolation from the other, but theres a commonality to their approach. Previously, Masin had released the inspired 1986 album Wind (BAR 003-015LP), while Haywards music had long been influenced by the landscape and society of London and the UK. For this album, the label challenged the two musicians to write about the waterways of their respective cities, Venice and London. For Masin, that meant describing the human interactions related to the Italian citys famous landmarks. Places, faces, memories... thats what most of the people love to find when they travel to Venice - some kind of magic thats deep in the city, he writes in the new liner notes accompanying this new re-release. For Hayward, it meant describing the physicality of water, the densities and energies as he puts it, and the politics of it too. Writes Hayward: Water was being privatized at the time, the profit margin had been factored in, cost-cutting was implicit, people were being poisoned. Water was a political thing; it still is." Dive in. Track notes by Gigi Masin and Charles Hayward; Restored and remastered audio; Features the Masin track Clouds as sampled by To Rococo Rot and Björk." - Modern Classics.

"In the company of Gilles Poizat (guitar, trumpet, voice), Catherine Hershey sings the poems of her grandfather Galen E. Hershey, pastor-farmer in Pontiac, Michigan. The poems come from a collection of poetry written between 1946 and 1976. Features Frédéric Jean on whistle on "Dilemma & Decision". Mixed by Gilles Olivesi; Mastered by Harris Newman; Illustration by Gwénola Carrère. Florian Caschera on the release: "As his name readily admits, this disc of tranquil hallucination (but beware) bursts forth in all its absurd duration around eight poems that fire the Reverend Galen Hershey, grandfather of Catherine Hershey, who sings here, recorded more or less in secret, in his notebooks. They are simple and beautiful poems, which have the simplicity and beauty of poems which are recorded more or less secretly in notebooks. The secret of the notebooks is more or less the simplest and the most beautiful of the secrets... Gilles Poizat, trembling in the reverb of a patient guitar, tells his furtive notes like a string of bones, and pulls a trumpet the kind of subtly diffracted traits that are heard on Robert Wyatts Rock Bottom (1974), whistles as we hide to cry and sing like a baby whale dreaming (or he shouts, like Jad Fair stuck at the top of the slide, it could make you laugh but its heartbreaking). Catherine Hershey, eyes wide open on what comes out of her mouth and makes of this smoke, gives to her melodies the curve of the most intriguing calves. They are sad and full songs, somewhat veiled, whose hearts overflow everywhere, but with a quiet dawn sure of its dawn legitimacy. As all the music summons another, one will think of the rhymes of Ivor Cutler, the refrain of Pearl in The Night of the Hunter (1955), to the sweetest ballads of Shirley Collins, to some Elizabethan airs as they were already, in another life, made effervescent by Syd Barrett. We will think of it without it hindering us in anything. And then we will not think at all, too busy to look after our blues, these exquisite blues bring our souls the songs which we know will never be forgotten." - Okraina.

Title: Yiddish Speaking Socialists Of The Lower East Side
Format: 10"
Label: Okraina
Country: Belgium
Price: $18.00
“2015 release. Yiddish-Speaking Socialists Of The Lower East Side by Ed Sanders (b. 1939), founder of the mythical Fugs in 1964 and also a writer, publisher, activist, etc., is an epic piece of almost 18 minutes in length, a vocal setting of a dense and reasoned text that runs to eight typed pages, 1400 words, 8500 characters. First issued on cassette in 1991 by the label Hyperaction P.C.C., the piece recalls an almost fifty-year history of Jewish militancy in New York by poetic means - combining historical scholarship, emotion and clarity, the echoes of the past found in the present: of the pogroms and escape from Eastern Europe in the 1880s up to the death of Meyer London, the Socialist member of Congress, in 1926 (not overlooking exile, the crossing of the Atlantic, arrival at Ellis Island, back-breaking work in the sweatshops, the creation of political parties and trade unions, the outbreak of the First World War - the rupture in the narrative caused by this is marked here by the passage from the A-side to the B-side of the record). This is a literary project that is simultaneously ambitious and highly personal and which cannot help but recall America: A History In Verse (nine volumes published between 1998-2008), which has occupied Ed Sanders for almost 15 years and which, over more than 3000 pages, recounts in verse the history - both poetic and political - of the United States. For this recording of Yiddish-Speaking Socialists Of The Lower East Side, Ed Sanders accompanies himself on a "pulse lyre", a small, finger-operated synthesizer which he invented himself in order to accompany the declamation of his texts in the manner of the acoustic lyre used by the ancient poets (Sanders studied Greek at university). Yiddish-Speaking Socialists Of The Lower East Side is a text (and a recording) of dual resonance, animated by the fits and starts of history as well as the rhythm of the writing (and reading) of Ed Sanders. This reissue was re-recorded in mono in 2006; Mastered by Harris Newman (Grey Market Mastering, Montréal 2014); Illustrations by Gwénola Carrère; Comes in a gatefold sleeve.” - Okriana.

Title: Aberrant Lens
Format: CD
Label: Palace of Lights
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Marc Barrecas seventh solo album for Palace of Lights extends his work with a broader and deeper palette of synthesized and sampled sound, including sources as diverse as prepared guitars, pianos, Indonesian metallophones and glass harmonica. The music of Aberrant Lens employs long MIDI delays, synced MIDI processing via MAX for Live and extreme warping of disparate looped sound sources driven into entirely new states. The results are new, coherent aural structures: music that questions traditional definitions of ambient and electronic forms. And, to the educated ear, within this search for innovation and experimentation Aberrant Lens reveals many of Barrecas earliest influences. Even when integrated in thoroughly non-retro compositions, the hints of homage to Cluster and the first Fripp & Eno releases inhabit these twelve new settings. Marc Barreca has been creating and performing electronic music since the mid-1970s. His 1980 album, Twilight, was one of the earliest releases on Palace of Lights. His cassette-era album Music Works for Industry is being reissued by the RVNG spin-off Freedom To Spend, and his early cassette work is included in the upcoming VOD box set American Cassette Culture, which also features Marcs early electronic music group Young Scientist. His work is included in the collection of The British Library." - Palace of Lights.

Title: Electronic Works 1965-1966
Format: CD
Label: Paradigm Discs
Country: UK
Price: $16.00
"1997 release of three early electronic works from 1965-1966 by Pauline Oliveros. This material is exclusive to this release and is not included on the recent Important Records 12CD Reverberations: Tape & Electronic Music 1961-1970. "I of IV" was made in July 1966, first released by CBS alongside works by Steve Reich and Richard Maxfield. "Big Mother Is Watching You" was also made in the summer of 1966 at the University of Toronto Electronic Music Studio, and track 3 was made at the San Francisco Tape Music Center in 1965. The three pieces on this CD are all live experiments, which at the simplest level use either an array of oscillators or filters, a mixer and one spool of tape feeding a series of (variously set up) stereo tape machines. Long delay lines, pile-ups of noise and rich sonorities are the stuff of this music. The third piece also samples a chunk of Puccinis Madame Butterfly, which only makes this music seem even more contemporary." - Paradigm Discs.

Title: Xhos De Villemahu
Format: Double LP
Label: Penultimate Press
Country: UK
Price: $46.00
"Penultimate Press present the second full length release by the acclaimed French inventor, instrument builder, musician, visual artist, researcher and writer Jacques Brodier. Following up the 2012 release Filtre De Réalité, Xhos De Villemahu expands Brodiers vision tenfold with two LPs worth of inexplicable audio recorded between 2009-2016. Operating from Le Havre, France since the 1970s, Jacques Brodier has created a uniquely personal vision that incorporates music, writings, paintings and drawings. Over the years he has amassed a large amount of material in all of these fields. The music he conjures from his self-built instrument, the Filtre De Réalité (Filter of Reality), harnesses the energies found in shortwave radio, harmonic strings, sensors, sheet metal and rotating glass spheres of sand. The resulting audio shatters time and space with voices of the deep past slamming up against a fantastic present. Frequencies dance in a whirl of frenzied excitement whilst elements of a cosmic science fiction leave a trail of neon lit bewilderment. A vast amount of writings, painting and drawings support the enormous world Brodier has constructed over the years. Xhos De Villemahu is an attempt to capture this substantial and significant world view into a complete package. Xhos De Villemahu arrives as a deluxe double LP in a gloss gatefold sleeve featuring a 32-page A4 booklet of images, essays and texts written by Brodier for the occasion. Utterly unique in vision and scope, Xhos De Villemahu is absolutely an experience unlike any other." - Penultimate Press.

Title: Appleheads Rache
Format: LP
Label: Pre-Cert Home Entertainment
Country: UK
Price: $21.00
"The return of Andy Votels most elusive alter-ego with a new album of delirious and darkened collage pieces brought to you by his own Pre-Cert Home Entertainment label, run alongside longtime spar, Sean Canty (Demdike Stare). Hiding behind "Cowardly Pseudonyms" inspired by the incognito exploits of Jean-Pierre Massiera and a long list of Italian library musicians, Applehead is the twice-removed alter-alter-alter ego project of Dead-Cert, Finders Keepers, Cacophonic, Pre-Cert label boss and designer Andy Votel, aka Anworth Kirk, aka Xian Orphic, aka Tandy Love, aka Tony Deval, aka Neotantrik, and the list goes on. This hang-dried and un-cured collection of low-brow electronics, oblique movie-tones, cold-funk, ready-made poetry and domestic plunderism spans five years since the debut Applehead LP on the Pre-Cert label (2011). Cut and pasted from a pool of overnight rare synth-lends, some obscure foreign-pop fix-ups and a stash of emotive tonal sketches and tape-edits (prepared when touring Milan and Rome with Suzanne Ciani and Northern Italy with the blink-missable Stanza Nera punk-funk project) these multifarious, Crepaxian comic-book compositions have clearly absorbed a strong Italian DIY muse. With respectful nods to Daniela Casa, Raskovich, Frizzi, and AR Luciani, Applehead also combines surrealist shlock with Letterist informed random Roman female spoken word and occasional back-handed salutes to Throbbing Gristle and NWW projects. This self-motivated, naturalistic response to the broad vista that has informed 20 years of Votels unwaning multi-dis adventures offers an infrequent opportunity to hear his personal problematic-pop and scalpel-happy art in the comfort of his own creative confides complete with square-pegs and sandpaper. Mastered by Matt Colton. Edition of 500." - Pre-Cert Home Entertainment.

Title: Cruel Optimism
Format: LP
Label: Room40
Country: Australia
Price: $24.00
"Cruel Optimism is a record that considers power (present and absent). It meditates on how power consumes, augments, and ultimately shapes two subsequent human conditions: obsession and fragility. . . . This edition owes its title and its origins to the wonderful text of the same name by American theorist Lauren Berlant. . . . In Cruel Optimism, I found a number of critical readings around the issues that have fueled so much of the music I have been making recently. Beyond her keen analysis of the relations of attachment as they pertain to conditions of possibility in the everyday, it was particularly her writing around trauma I found deeply affecting. It was a jumping off point from which a plague of unsettling impressions of suffering, intolerance, and ignorance could be unpacked and utilized as fuel over and above pointless frustration. When I made Wilderness Of Mirrors (RM 460CD/LP, 2014) clouds of unease were overhead. As I have worked through Cruel Optimism, what seemed an unimaginable future just a few years prior, began to present as actual. Over the course of creating the record, we collectively bore witness to a new wave of humanitarian and refugee crisis (captured so succinctly in the photograph of Alan Kurdis tiny body motionless on the shore), the Black Lives Matter movement, the widespread use of sonic weapons on civilians, increased drone strikes in Waziristan, Syria and elsewhere, and record low numbers of voting around Brexit and the US election cycle, suggesting a wider sense of disillusionment and powerlessness. Acutely for me and other Australians, weve faced dire intolerance concerning race and continued inequalities related to gender and sexuality. The storm has broken and feels utterly visceral. Cruel Optimism is a meditation on these challenges and an encouragement to press forward towards more profound futures. Beyond the motivations forging the record, the process by which this edition was created was unlike many of my other records. Having worked largely alone in recent years, I wanted to shift away from that approach. . . . I count myself exceptionally fortunate to have been able to call on so many fine musicians in the making of this album. . . . I couldnt be more pleased to share Cruel Optimism with you." - Lawrence English, October 2016. "NU LP For RS marks the first proper LP for No UFOs - Soft Coast on Spectrum Spools (SP 011LP, 2010) was considered a demo - and having been diagnosed with Carpal tunnel syndrome, will likely be the last of its kind. Eschewing the heavy gestures of todays musical zeitgeist, NU LP finds Konrad Jandavs utilizing tape machines, foley libraries, and rare synthesizers and amplifiers to construct an oblique sound world evoking reception, perception and agency. Of NU LP, Konrad states: "I was trying hard to avoid making another 3 Feet High And Rising (1989) and that basically meant I was making a De La Soul Is Dead (1991), but in the end it seems clear to me that I skipped ahead and made a Buhloone Mindstate (1993)." - Root Strata.

Title: Spiral Insana (Colored Vinyl)
Format: Double LP
Label: Rotorelief
Country: France
Price: $52.00
Colored double-LP version. 180-gram vinyl. Silver and black vinyl (disc one); silver and white vinyl (disc two). Deluxe metallic silver gatefold sleeve. Limited numbered edition of 500. "Rotorelief inaugurates its Silver Collection with this deluxe expanded reissue of Nurse With Wounds 1986 masterpiece Spiral Insana. One of Nurse With Wounds most deep and mysterious recordings, Spiral Insana is more ambient and user-friendly than many other NWW outings, without losing any of its surreal edge. Stapleton and guests Robert Haigh and David Jackman mix prepared piano, percussion, loops, and various bric-à-brac into an hour-long collage of mashed-up sound, jarring juxtapositions, buzz-saw distortion, and even a pipe organ. If that sounds disorienting, thats because it is. This edition marks the definitive release of the complete Spiral Insana sessions, with the contents of the original 1986 LP augmented by three recordings from the same period: "Mourning Smile" (originally released on the 1987 LP Drunk With The Old Man Of The Mountains and later included on the 1997 United Dairies CD reissue of Spiral Insana), "Nihil" (first released on the 1997 Spiral Insana CD reissue), and "A Missing Sense," a 25-minute tribute to Robert Ashleys Automatic Writing originally released as the NWW half of a 1986 LP split with Organum. Steven Stapleton: drums, cello, radio, guitar, bowed piano, percussion, loops, voice, tuba, organ, electronics; Robert Haigh: guitar; David Jackman: banjo, splutter, voice; Chris Wallis: acoustic guitar; David Tibet: trumpet; Diana Rogerson: voice; Andrew McKenzie: voice. Mastered by Denis Blackham. Cover art and pictures by Babs Santini." - Rotorelief. "Still stands as one of the clear highlights of Stephen Stapletons singularly daunting and mountainous discography. . . . Many of the varied interludes are noisy, fragmented, and somewhat abrasive, but there is always a playful sense of mischief lurking in the shadows, ready to blunder into the steadily darkening fever dream at any second. . . . a brilliantly skewed and excellent album that has not faded with age one bit." - Anthony DAmico, Brainwashed.

Format: Picture Disc LP
Label: Rotorelief
Country: France
Price: $23.00
"Deluxe 200-gram picture disc version with special sleeve design. Limited numbered edition of 500. Originally released in 1974. German trio Sands first album, Golem, is a legendary work of cosmic psychedelic genius. This is its first reissue. There is something magical and inexplicable in creation, and Sand absolutely manifest these mysterious phenomena. Storytellers, musicians, shamans, geniuses -- Sand were known, at the end of the 60s, as P.O.T. (Part of Time). Then Sand -- Ludwig Papenberg, his brother Ulrich Papenberg, and Johannes Vester -- developed a more avant-gardist, proto-industrial, visionary, experimental approach, becoming a truly unique entity in the history of music. Not dependent on a classic krautrock style, Sand is nevertheless part of this movement of German cosmic/psychedelic bands, in addition to being the originators of proto-industrial musics." - Rotorelief.

Title: Sounds From The Archipelago: An Introduction To The Lush Indonesian Music Tradition Vol. 1
Format: LP+CD
Label: Shiok!
Country: Singapore
Price: $26.00
"The first volume of Sounds From The Archipelago: An Introduction To The Lush Indonesian Music Tradition gathers traditional music from different areas of the Indonesian archipelago, featuring music from Sulawesi, The Moluccas Islands (Spice Islands), and Central Java. In the first track from Sulawesi ("Gandrung Bulo"), the lead is taken by the percussion made of bamboo drums, later joined by two male voices in the second track. This is traditional entertainment music which is typically played at weddings, feasts, and others special occasions. The last track is an instrumental one featuring the story-telling of an epic ballad. The singer is playing a traditional Indonesian instrument called the sinrili. The track from the Moluccas ("Tjakalele") is a typical warrior dance, and it was recorded in the main city of Maluku Islands. The music from Bali is performed by a chorus of seventy-eight men sitting in circle around the actors, during the representation of the so-called Ketchak (Monkey) Dance, which is still a big attraction for travelers coming to Bali. The selection from Central Java is a traditional piece called Perdjuritan dance ("Perdjuritan"), which is some sort of a soldiers dance. It is performed by a traditional Javanese orchestra (called Gamelan) which consists of drums, metal rattles and whistles. The last sample is recorded in the capital city of Jakarta and represents an example of the so called Sundanese music, typical of the western region of Java. Another example of traditional old entertainment music to be played during various festivities. Shiok! Records is a new record label dedicated to the discovery of the extensive and rich music tradition of the various South East Asian countries. Operating right from the heart of the region, in the strategic location of Singapore, Shiok! Records core mission is to provide a musical outlook on some "hidden gems" that are still mostly unknown to the vast majority of the western audiophile audience. By following a chronological and anthological approach, Shiok! Records will be publishing music deeply rooted in the history, folkways and traditions of the mighty and exotic territories of the East. With a specific focus on the lush production of Indonesia for its first issues, Shiok! Title: Sounds From The Archipelago: An Introduction To The Lush Indonesian Music Tradition Vol. 2
Format: LP + CD
Label: Shiok!
Country: Singapore
Price: $26.00
"The second volume of Sounds From The Archipelago: An Introduction To The Lush Indonesian Music Tradition covers music from the vast island of Sumatra (West Indonesia), The Moluccas Islands, and the island of Bali. In the first sample from Sumatra ("Gondang Mula Mula"), recorded near the awesome Lake Toba, is a ceremonial overture played during weddings and special occasions. The band is comprised of four instruments: two "Ketchapis" (sort of a two-string ukulele), one "Serenar" (a wind instrument), and one simple metal spoon tapped against a glass bottle. The second track ("Andung Andung") is music conceived to put people in the right mood for working in the fields, or boating on Lake Toba. Some sort of predecessor, if you will, of the "Ayo kerja" slogan and movement. The third track ("Hasa Hatan") is a coda to all ceremonies in the region, and carries a benediction. The track from Moluccas ("Menari Sawat") is a Muslim traditional dance from the area (menari), while sawat is the name of this type of music. The recording is taken in a small fishing village. The album moves to Bali, where the first track ("Pubradaya") is a sitting dance performed by a local Gamelan orchestra. The following four tracks ("Barong Dance: Preren, Omang, Castel, and Sadewa") are all part of a suite of drums and gamelan music performed for the dance of a Barong, which is a mythical creature represented as half lion and half dog. The last two pieces are typical cremation music played on the tower at the cremation ceremonies in Bali, extremely interesting and unique. Shiok! Title: s/t (Slowscan vol. 23)
Format: Double LP
Label: Slowscan
Country: Netherlands
Price: $37.00
2014 release, edition of 200 copies. Recordings courtesy Dick Higgins (of Something Else Press, etc).

Includes an interview with Maxfield on Radio KQED, California, from November 11, 1960; "Fermentation (1960)"; "Cough Music (1959)"; "Perspectives II For La Monte Young (1961) "; "Piano Sonata No. 2 (1948/49)"; "Structures (1951)"; and "For Sonny Wilson (Ca. 1966)."

“Writing in his book Ocean of Sound some years ago, David Toop observed: "If Richard Maxfield had not committed suicide in 1969, and if his electronic music pieces were not so difficult to find or to hear, then our idea of how music has changed and opened out during the past thirty-five years might be very different." Toop penned those remarks back in 1994; and, even at this much later date, the thought still holds true. Before jumping to his death from a hotel window ledge in Los Angeles at the age of 42, Maxfield could be considered one the chief pioneers of electronic music on American shores.

Despite the archival cornucopia that it offers, Reissue Culture has had its share of oversights, and Maxfield has been one of them. Only a few of his compositions have seen digital reissue over the years, with works like the three-minute "Amazing Grace" or 1963s "Pastoral Symphony" turning up on a few scattered compilations. Depending on which account you go with, when he left New York for the West Coast, Maxfield entrusted his tapes to artists Walter De Maria; who passed them along to La Monte Young, who in turn reputedly entrusted them to the Dia Arts Foundation.

Terry Riley, being interviewed in the course of a game of "Invisible Jukebox" in The Wire back in 1999 shed some light on Maxfields neglected legacy. Maxfield, he asserted, was one of the most brilliant yechnicians in American electronic music. Aside from reputedly having built much of his own equipment, Maxfield was also reputedly something of a wizard at tape-splicing -- stoically patient, exacting and precise when it came to the task of taking things apart and putting them together viz the yarns and reels of magnetic tape. La Monte Young similarly testified to the artists skills:

"He was an incredible electronic music teacher and master engineer. I used to go up to his mixing studio when he worked at Westminster Records in 1960-61 and observe him editing those old reel-to-reel tapes. He was the most amazingly adept tape handler I have ever seen. He worked so fast his hands and the tape were a constant blur... He really understood electronics; he was very creative and experimental. He taught electronics and composition at the highest level." - Slowscan.

“Song Cycle Records present a reissue of Two And Two, the outcome of the ambitious research developed by Christina Kubisch and Fabrizio Plessi, originally released in 1976. Two And Two was a collaborative effort towards the merging of visual and sound elements into a new form of intermedia. Influenced by the aesthetics of Fluxus, the duo produced a highly complex and articulated performance, involving two camera operators and several video screens, as well as a variety of objects and unconventional instruments - such as an electric vibrator, a Swanee whistle, a ventilator, an electronic metronome, and a water jet on a steel drum. The result is structured into four parts, inspired by the natural elements, in which single instruments lose their different sonic characteristics, becoming inseparable parts of a unique visual/acoustic process. Presented here on 180 gram vinyl.” - Song Cycle.

Following the breakup of Cambridges avant-rock legends, Henry Cow, guitarist Fred Frith moved to NYC in 1979, and soon found himself deep in the heart of the citys robust post-punk and free-jazz scenes. He performed with Bill Laswell and Fred Maher, from the group Material, as a power trio of sorts under the moniker of Massacre. The group quickly garnered a reputation around town, and around the world for that matter, as a heavy and heady band that experimented greatly with rhythm, time signatures, and tone. As Frith himself put it, "the group was a direct response to New York. It was a very aggressive group, kind of my reaction to the whole New York rock club scene." Massacre released one album, Killing Time, before disbanding for nearly 20 years. Their first wave as a group crashed fast and furiously and this one album, recorded in part live in Paris, and in part at Brooklyns OAO Studio, is a perfect encapsulation of early 80s NYC. In addition to the original album, first released on Celluloid in 1981, this deluxe three-sided double LP includes eight bonus tracks recorded live between 80 and 81 at The Stone in San Francisco, and Inroads and CBGB in NYC. Avant-jazz-post-punk-noise of the highest order from several legends and one of the most important projects Frith and Laswell were ever involved in." - Spittle.

Artist: GOLDMAN, VIVIEN
Title: Resolutionary (Songs 1979-1982)
Format: LP
Label: Staubgold
Country: Germany
Price: $21.00
2017 repress. "Theres a myth about music critics according to which they are frustrated wannabe performers. Evidence to the contrary: Vivien Goldman. The London-born, New York-based Goldman is one of the foremost chroniclers of the perfect storm of reggae, punk, hip hop, and Afrobeat, but between 1979 and 1982, she was also a working musician, creating songs that, years later, would be sampled by The Roots and Madlib. These rare girl grooves are now collected for the first time on Resolutionary, covering Goldmans first three musical formations; first as a member of experimental British new wavers The Flying Lizards, next as a solo artist with her single "Launderette" featuring post-punk luminaries, and then as half of the Parisian duo Chantage with Afro-Parisian chanteuse Eve Blouin. Goldmans eclectic musical crew included PiLs John Lydon, Keith Levene, and Bruce Smith; avant-gardists Steve Beresford and David Toop; The Raincoats Vicky Aspinall; the mighty Robert Wyatt; Zaires Jerry Malekani; Manu Dibangos guitarist; Viv Albertine, then of Goldmans good friends The Slits; and dubmaster Adrian Sherwood, who produced the majority of these tracks. Goldman sang in a lilting, clear-toned soprano honed during childhood. She began her singing career in the late 70s, doing backup with Neneh Cherry and Ari Up (The Slits) on Sherwood records by reggae artists including Prince Far I. Goldman was grooving to the innovations of dub. The contrast between Goldmans high, lilting tones and the deep rumble of the bass is a hallmark of all her work, giving a haunting frisson of sex and alienation to songs like The Flying Lizards "The Window." Reggae had been her London soundtrack, but after moving to Paris in the early 80s, she absorbed music from Africa, an interplay audible in exultant Chantage tracks like "Its Only Money," a mix of steelpan, African soukous guitar, and sobbing Romani violin riding ferocious funk. As the 1990s began, Goldman moved to Manhattan and became New York Universitys "Punk Professor," teaching original courses on punk, Bob Marley, David Bowie, and Fela Kuti. But she never stopped singing and writing songs. Chicks on Speed released a later cut, "7 Days," on their 2006 Girl Monster compilation (COSR 033CD). Her house 12" records with artists including Berlins Moritz von Oswald are compiled on LPs. Goldman has also co-written tracks with Massive Attack, Coldcut, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Luscious Jackson. Early in 2016, she performed dub readings onstage with Bostons Berklee Marley Ensemble. Her multimedia beat goes on." - Staubgold.

Title: Where the Mountains Meet the Sky: Folk Music of Ladakh
Format: LP
Label: Sublime Frequencies
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
LP comes with a full-size insert containing historic photos, song lyrics, and liner notes by Erik Koto. "Music from Ladakh recorded during the making of the film The Song Collector (2014) by director Erik Koto, with additional material recorded by Bill Kite in 1992. "Situated high in the Western Himalaya, Ladakh is one of the great cultural crossroads of Asia. For centuries, it sat at the hub of ancient trade routes that connected the Silk Road to India, Tibet, and Kashmir. Each year, once the winter snows had melted from the high passes surrounding Ladakh, its markets would buzz with merchants from throughout central Asia. They brought spices, wool, salt, and silk. They also brought their instruments and their folks songs. Over time, these diverse musical influences laid the foundation of Ladakhs unique folk traditions. Folk music became central to the daily life of the Ladakhis with song serving as an essential form of communication, documentation, and entertainment. This collection of songs is intended to offer a sampling of the range of Ladakhs folk music. These songs also celebrate one of the great folk artists of Ladakh, Morup Namgyal. Morup is an avid preservationist and during his 30-year career working at Ladakhs only radio station (All India Radio, Leh) he recorded a vast archive of Ladakhi folk songs. This collection of over 1,000 recordings was unlike anything else in Ladakh and formed a crucial link to a dying folk tradition. Tragically, it burned to the ground in 2002 when a fire raged through the old wooden radio station building. The loss was devastating, but Morup immediately set about recreating the archive. Five of the songs on this album, recorded in 1992, are among the handful of tracks to have been spared by the fire. Today, Ladakhs marketplaces bear little resemblance to the buzzing markets of old. Gone are the camel trains and merchants, replaced instead by Indian trucks belching smoke. Seemingly vanished too are the folk musicians, pushed aside by the synthetic beats of the latest Bollywood hit. But the folk artists have not vanished entirely, and if you wander beyond the blare of the latest pop song, youll discover a folk tradition that, thanks to the efforts of Morup Namgyal and others like him, is alive, evolving, and poised to endure the challenges of modernization." - Erik Koto.

Title: Un Uomo Da Rispettare
Format: LP
Label: Superior Viaduct
Country: USA
Price: $26.00
"Un Uomo Da Rispettare translates to A Man to Respect, which can easily be said of Ennio Morricone himself -- the unparalleled maestro of the soundtrack. This 1972 crime film stars Kirk Douglas as a master safecracker at a crossroads in his life, emerging from prison yet tempted by one last big job. Morricone builds the main theme around Cicci Santuccis flugelhorn as riveting leitmotifs reprise amidst variations of noir-jazz abstraction to frame the composers grand vision. A strident, two-note piano phrase sets the mood of heightened tension, while muted timpani and trance-like descending bass patterns sweep dramatically across the cinematic stereo field. On 18 Pari, slinky rhythms and softened wah-wah guitars offer a distinctly Italian library music, adding elements of lightness to the overall avant-garde score. Un Uomo Da Rispettares dissonant chords and angular arrangements recall Morricones free improvisation work with Gruppo DImprovvisazione Nuova Consonanza. This first-time vinyl reissue is recommended for fans of Krzysztof Penderecki, Harry Partch and Sun City Girls." - Superior Viaduct.

"All tracks were made at home March 1990 with analog equipment and recorded live. Every track was born while making it and could be made only once, because TC does not use multi-track recording but jacks the output signals straight into the audio amplifier. This method of working ensures maximum emotional outbursts. Futhermore TC does not use complete rhythm-tracks but only separate programmed synthesizers. TC hates samples and does not use tapes on this K7, only vocoded voice. No stereo, you are guaranteed of absolute mono quality without dolby. "

Sealed, original copies of this 1988 release. “As good a chunk of the Mofos as youre gonna get (assuming there isnt a live LP in the works). Revved up and ready to go from the first track to the last, this is the sound of smart guys with cool record collections who arent afraid to damn pretension and have some fun. The definitive "Rocket Reducer" is here (sorry all you MC5 obsessives, but its true), as well as their great original "Mindreader." Billy Batson may not be the greatest singer in the world, and Lou Giordanos production is a bit murky, but theres enough power generated by these guys to over come these lapses.” - all music.com

Title: Still Insane After All These Years
Format: LP
Label: Ultramarine
Country: Italy
Price: $25.00
"Eleven new & previously unreleased songs from BeNe GeSSeRiT, the cult Belgian minimal synth duo of Alain Neffe (various instruments including synth, beats, loops, strings…) and Nadine Bal (vocals). Alain started his Insane Music imprint back in 1981, he is a key figure of the European cassette culture and has been making some of the most creative and cross-boundary music since the early 80’s, also with other numerous projects like Pseudo Code, Human Flesh and more recently, his and Nadine’s duo with singer Anna Homler, The Chopstick Sisters. The duo’s debut LP in 1985 “A High, Happy, Perverse And Cynical Cry of Joy” was a real gem and on this new album, they go back to their roots but take advantage of newer technologies and sonic textures - every song has a life of its own. Alain’s arrangements are impeccable and unpredictable, a mad variety of instruments and moods, punchy beats, hypnotic strings, groovy organ, crazy sax lines and an inventive use of sound shaping… at some point you’ll be in the middle of… a choir of frogs??! Nadine, on the other hand, is a muse of this and the OTHER world, she manages to sound like an angel, a child, a siren and an alien, often all in the same track. Our prescription is: listen to this LP over and over for best results, you will discover and feel something new at every listen. BeNe GeSSeRiT make truly charming and personal music that’s hard to pin down: too weird to be classified as pop, but not so much to be just avantgarde, surreal & emotional, sharing the aesthetic choices of Anne Clark, Roberto Cacciapaglia, Laurie Anderson, Kraftwerk, Die Form… Glossy full color covers with insane artwork by Alain Neffe." - Ultramarine.
