Artist: ALLEN, LORI E
Title: Tears Of The Material Vulture
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Lori E Allen is an unemployed prehistoric archaeologist from middle America, b. 1975, now living and working between London and Berlin as an experimental composer and video artist. In the early 90s while studying at New York University she met and began vaguely collaborating and cavorting with DJ Fat Pants, the obscure genome from which Madame Chaos was conceived. "Madame Chaos" was a public access television show, cablecast on Manhattan Neighborhood Network and Brooklyn Community Access Television in New York City from 1995 to 2005. Allen was involved until she was kicked out and describes the show, as it was seen on TV, as being "a re-digested type of media vomit which should comprise one the major vital food groups for growing children." Tears of the Material Vulture is a new composition which builds itself specifically upon three samples from two of Madame Chaos early cassette releases, MC Sampler and Creeping Eskimo Chong, both dating from 1995, and resurrected here in memory of those creepy times. Artist: ANTIFLUFFY FEATURING BRUCE GEDULDIG
Title: Before Before Surgery
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
Featuring Bruce Geduldig of Tuxedomoon. "This cassette brings together two fragments of recent and ongoing controlled chaos taking place in Porto, Portugal -- with Antifluffy as both the foreboding guardian and the spiritual bond. Side one is the full recording of the closing concert of FuturePlaces 2013, Medialab for Citizenship, curated by Heitor Alvelos and Karen Gustafson for the UT Austin-Portugal Program in Digital Media. Every October since 2008, we throw together a deliberately unlikely mix of creatives, tech-heads, radio wizards, thinkers, activists, and nomads, and watch the impossible happen before our very eyes. Besides being the culmination of six days of creative work, this particular gig served as the chance to unleash Antifluffy onto the World at large... The recording on side two is again a concert. It emerged in the days leading to the Summer Solstice, 2014, as a gut reaction to the birth of a new Portuguese internet/mobile/entertainment brand mega-consortium: NOS. The ubiquitous NOS marketing campaign, treading on Photoshop boobs n teeth, dead pop stars, and hysterically cute pets, was reinvented as an antidote; cryptic and visceral, cerebral and introspective -- all that contemporary mainstream culture seems to abhor. The gig doubled as a goodbye card to Bruce Geduldig and Bernadette Martou who, after two extraordinarily fertile years based in Porto, left soon thereafter to pursue a new life across the Atlantic. From Tapeman to Bubblewrapman... Antifluffy in all its guises" --Heitor Alvelos, Porto, September 26, 2014.

Artist: ARABI, OSMAN
Title: Destroying Symmetry
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
“Improvised, channeled and recorded in one take at Tunefork Recording Studios on August 9, 2013, Beirut, Lebanon. Mixed and mastered by Fadi Tabbal on October 10, 2013, Beirut, Lebanon. A unique figure in the international noise and industrial music scenes, Osman Arabi is a composer, producer and sound designer from Tripoli, Lebanon. His work elicits images of desolate industrial landscapes and shamanistic rites. From his beginnings in black metal, Arabi has progressed through such genres as dark ambient, industrial, tribal, psychedelic, electro-acoustic, power electronics and noise. His many projects have included Seeker, Kafan, Veinen, Shamanic Death Trance, The Ritual Inclusion Of Code, harsh electronics outfit 20.SV, as well as nihilist Dutch collective Stalaggh. In 2000, Arabi stopped performing live -- vanishing into the underground, not resurfacing until 2009. For the past decade, Arabi has been developing -- in complete secrecy -- his "occult guitar" playing, based on the sigil work of Austin Osman Spare. This new thread to his work was only recently unveiled, in late 2013, and is set to become the backbone of his live rituals here on in. Limited to 150 copies. Illustration by SavX.” - The Tapeworm.

Artist: AUTODIGEST
Title: A Compressed History Of Every Bootleg Ever Recorded
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Cassette-only release in a limited edition of 100 copies only. This is the fourth installment in Autodigests series of compressed everything: this time around, you are promised all the bootlegs ever. At a time when the debate on music piracy rages on, it is a good thing to be reminded that the luxurious universe of unofficial recordings is now in its fourth decade and flourishing like never before. If anything, the pressing issue of containing the P2P sharing rampage of official recordings has benefited the underworld: record labels simply cannot be bothered with unofficial recordings when Britney Whatevers latest opus leaks weeks before release and costs them billions in lost revenue. The irony, of course, is that these free, unofficial recordings are infinitely more exciting than anything Britney Whatever could ever aspire to spit out. The music on this cassette spans over 40 years and was originally recorded on analog and digital equipment. As Autodigest explains, "we have attempted to distance ourselves as much as possible from the sound of the original recordings. Autodigest Volume 4 is an attempt to reveal all limitations of the source tapes -- hiss to the fore, baby!" - The Tapeworm.

Artist: AUTOMATICS GROUP FEATURING AMY WINEDEATH, THE
Title: Ammo a Mass a Mat
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"She lay, naked, draped across the piano, her nipples still erect from her recent encounter. Globules dripped onto the keys, lying like translucent mercury pools, somewhere between solid and liquid, defying definition. She might be asleep; she might not. Its a special private place which cannot be shared or revealed. Her right hand slowly stroked the keys, as if to play; but there is no need for music now. She has her own sounds playing breezily around her; no need for form. Her fingers hesitate slightly as they play across the keys, as if reminded of her guttural expressions which recently filled the room. Her breathing was calm, but shallow -- a wave had passed through her, soaking her but now leaving her utterly changed but intact. There is no sign nor sound of another player on this primordial stage. Thanks to AMe for the cover art. Special thanks to a loud, short, fat, hairy-assed, umbrella-carrying American and Tony UPS (auto 73, actually)." -The Tapeworm.

"Cassette-only release in a limited-edition of 250 copies only. Baraclough are a London-based trio consisting of a classically-trained musician, a self-taught musician, and a non-musician. Since their inception in 2006, Baraclough have performed in a variety of bizarre locations such as a Kilburn rock pub and a former Turner Prize winners stock cupboard. In March of 2009, Baraclough released their debut album Hello Animal on Forris, their audio publishing cooperative. Members of Baraclough include: Paul de Casparis, Dale Cornish, and Eddie Nuttall." -The Tapeworm

Artist: BAUDRILLARD, JEAN
Title: Le Xerox et lInfini
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Cassette-only release in a limited edition of 250 copies. Jean Baudrillards Le Xerox Et lInfini -- originally published in Paris, 1987 -- as read by Patricia and Ellen. Recorded on July 12, 2009 by Vicki Bennett in Hersham, England. Jean Baudrillard is perhaps the most important theorist of the "after modern." Though he says he has "nothing to do with postmodernism," many interpret him among the most important prophets of a truly postmodern era. His works have attracted praise and derision all over the world. Since 1991, British artist Vicki Bennett (People Like Us) has been an influential figure in the field of audiovisual collage, through her innovative sampling, appropriating and cutting up of found footage and archives. Using collage as her main form of expression, she creates works that communicate a humorous, dark and often surreal view on life. Patricia and Ellen were born in Reims, northeastern France, on July 29, 1929. They told interviewers that their grandparents were peasants and their parents were civil servants. They became the first of their family to attend university when they enrolled in the Sorbonne University in Paris. There they studied German, which led to them teaching the subject at a provincial lycée, where they remained from 1958 until their departure in 1966. While teaching, Patricia and Ellen began to publish reviews of literature, and translate the works of such authors as Peter Weiss, Bertolt Brecht and Wilhelm Mühlmann. Later on, with the development of the magnetic tape recorder, Patricia and Ellen used these new means in order to manipulate their performances and expand the possibilities of language sound transformations. Patricia and Ellen continue to actively perform their work, the contextual quality of which is enhanced by their idiosyncratic delivery." -The Tapeworm

Artist: BITING TONGUES
Title: Still On Hawaiian Time
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Biting Tongues were formed in 1978 to improvise a soundtrack to the screening of a 16mm experimental film of the same name at Tony Wilsons original Factory Club in Manchester. A core membership was soon established that was to last until 1984: Howard Walmsley - sax; Ken Hollings - texts; Eddie Sherwood - drums; Colin Seddon - bass; and Graham Massey - guitar and noise. Their performances, an unpredictable "post-punk avant-funk" mix of spoken word, percussion, random tapes, films and free-form soloing, were mostly confined at this time to clubs in Manchester and London. The release of their first three albums Dont Heal (1981), Live It (1981) and Libreville (1984) widened their audience, and Biting Tongues found themselves performing more in theatres, arts venues and galleries. Still On Hawaiian Time captures two Biting Tongues performances from this later period. The Library Theatre in the center of Manchester was a large seated venue with an even larger stage, meaning that the group members could spread out more and incorporate additional percussion, tapes and electronic devices. It also shows Biting Tongues cutting up and rearranging themes from different recordings - the performance also anticipates their work on Feverhouse: their full-length experimental feature film released in 1984 by Factory Recordss video offshoot IKON The improved facilities available in a theatre venue, including greater space, better acoustics and more time for a sound check, meant that Biting Tongues could concentrate on the performance, producing some of their most aggressive and demanding work. During the early 1980s, Biting Tongues excelled as a live band, always seeking to challenge both themselves and their audiences. These two recordings are fascinating documents that convey some of the immediacy and commitment of their performances - something that can still be felt in these old tapes some thirty years after they were first recorded. Personnel: "Library Theatre, Manchester 16.6.1983": Colin Seddon - bass guitar, drums, percussion; Eddie Sherwood - drums; Ken Hollings - voice, clarinet, percussion, tapes; Graham Massey - guitar, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, drums, Astroban, iguarglaphon, voice, percussion; Howard Walmsley- tenor and soprano sax, glockenspiel, percussion, voice; Barry Seddon - pick-axe handle. "Riverside Studios, London 5.6.1982": Colin Seddon - bass guitar; Eddie Sherwood - drums; Ken Hollings - vocals, Hohner Pianet, percussion; Graham Massey - guitar, clarinet, reed cornet, trumpet, iguarglaphon, Morello loop, diary, percussion; Howard Walmsley - tenor sax, voice, percussion, Hohner Pianet.” - The Tapeworm. Edition of 150.

Artist: BLACK SPIRITUALS
Title: High Vibration Resonance Vol.1
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Black Spirituals are Zachary James Watkins (electronics) and Marshall Trammell (percussion). At the time of this cassettes release, they are supporting Earth on their 2015 European tour. Recorded live at Disjecta Art Gallery on August 30th, 2014, by Daniel Menche. Mastered by Jacob Felix Huele. Black Spirituals performance involves the manipulation of temporal experience using a framework of dynamic relationships and a "Multi-Aesthetic Approach to Improvisation." The title "Black Spirituals" is borrowed from a found cassette documenting a lecture given by Bernice Reagon on the roots music of American black slaves. These stories form a sonic resonance that speaks of rich relationships to ones surroundings, memories, profound feelings, dreams, and the experiences that inspire human expression. This duet features a new tradition in conversant, duo vernacular dynamics that sparked a revolution in our conceptions of space, stage, ritual, performance, geography, praxis, brotherhood, relationships, rockin out, and more. Cover illustration by Savage Pencil. Edition of 200." - The Tapeworm

Artist: BUTCHER, JOHN
Title: Trace
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm

Price: $8.00
"Cassette-only release. Edition of 250 copies. John Butchers work ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multi-tracked saxophone pieces and explorations with feedback and extreme acoustics. Originally a physicist, he left academia in 1982, and has since collaborated with hundreds of musicians. He is well known as a soloist, recently exploring unusual site-specific acoustics, and has released seven albums of solo saxophone music. His tape for The Tapeworm features two contrasting performance styles. The first is a live recording in three parts for tenor and soprano saxophones, recorded in concert October 30, 2009, LEglise Saint-Merri, Paris. Its flipside is a 20-minute piece for saxophone controlled feedback and piano (one player)." -The Tapeworm

Artist: CHUGGA
Title: Memphistophelis
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Cassette release. Edition of 250 copies. Masterminded by Terre Thaemlitz and "fresh... for 96!" -- Memphistophelis by Chugga (aka Lester Fuero and Jeff Hanes) is a deliciously dated blend of trip-hop, 70s disco, funk, Jeep-dub and lounge, mixed well and served chilled. Each track on Memphistophelis picks up on a different 70s sound while tying in that unique Memphis combination of sparsity and orchestration. The album was mastered by an unlikely culprit -- and friend -- transgendered electro-acoustic/ambient/house Jack-of-all-genres Terre Thaemlitz (aka DJ Sprinkles). Although it was shopped around and two or three cuts trickled out over the years on obscure vinyl and compilation releases, Memphistophelis never found a home -- until The Tapeworm." -The Tapeworm

While on military duty in Korea in 1960-1961, he studied calligraphy with Ki-sung Kim and many of his works have calligraphic scores. Artist: DOWDALL, GRAHAM
Title: Outside Broadcast
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Graham "Dids" Dowdall has been active on the outer limits of music for several decades. Starting out as drummer in Manchester cult band Ludus he then worked with Eric Random & the Bedlamites and spent several years recording and touring with Nico. Hes collaborated live and on record with many others along the way including John Cale, Suns Of Arqa, and Band Of Holy Joy. He is currently a member of avant rock legends Pere Ubu, has an acclaimed solo electronica project Gagarin and works with rising Welsh-Iranian singer-songwriter Roshi, in Roshi featuring Pars Radio. His last solo Gagarin album Biophilia (yes, Björk nicked the title) received great reviews, being described in Musicweek as "stunning beautiful glitchy electronica" and in Mojo as "electronica in its rawest sense." He has a wide-ranging portfolio career that also includes running music workshops with disabled children, and training and teaching at Goldsmiths College. Outside Broadcast is a departure from the more beat-driven glitchy style of Gagarin and is an evocation of childhood evenings sitting at an old "Portable" radio, obsessively tuning bakelite dials across the airwaves -- finding a weird sound to luxuriate in, then a bit of strange music, an exotically-named station, a call sign or simply the sound of the dial, all masked in MW/SW/LW noise. Its a distressed and lo-fi sound-world created with a cassette release in mind -- no sharp beats or hi-fi. The main instrument was a 90s radio-cassette player alongside two iPad apps. Its hoped that repeated play will enhance the sound as the tape deteriorates. 150 copies only." - The Tapeworm.

Title: All Animals Are Saints
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"This is a cassette-only limited release in an edition of 250 copies only. Leif Elggren (born 1950, Linköping, Sweden), is a Swedish artist who lives and works in Stockholm. Active since the late 1970s, Leif Elggren has become one of the most constantly surprising conceptual artists to work in the combined worlds of audio and visual. A writer, visual artist, stage performer and composer, he has many albums to his credits, solo and with the Sons Of God, on labels such as Ash International, Touch, Radium and his own Firework Edition. His music, often conceived as the soundtrack to a visual installation or experimental stage performance, usually presents carefully selected sound sources over a long stretch of time and can range from mesmerizingly quiet electronics to harsh noise. His wide-ranging and prolific body of art often involves dreams and subtle absurdities, social hierarchies turned upside-down, hidden actions and events taking on the quality of icons. Together with artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff, he is a founder of the Kingdoms Of Elgaland-Vargaland (KREV) where he enjoys the title of King. "The Life Of The Plants" was recorded at "The Night Of The Long Worms," Café Oto, London on November 19, 2009. First performed at Kontiki, Botanic Sounds, Gothenburg, Sweden on June 6, 2009. "Swedenborgs Organ" was recorded at The Showroom, London on November 20, 2009, in celebration of the DVD release of Death Travels Backwards by Leif Elggren on Errant Bodies Records." -The Tapeworm

Artist: FELL, MARK
Title: Focal Music #3, #4, #5a, #5b
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"This series of works on this cassette began in 2011 when I attended a workshop/residency program led by the British sound artist, composer and performer Jan Hendrickse. During a workshop session I played a pattern generating system via headphones to a drummer, Patrik Jarlestam, who played a single snare drum. The basic premise of the work was that the performer should follow the pattern as accurately as possible, and to see what happened at the moments when the pattern changed - i.e. to foreground the performers attempts to follow the pattern and their ability to cope with the subtle yet unusual changes. The pattern itself consists of a single percussive sound. The timing of the sound is determined by a list of five values ranging from one to 11 that represent timing intervals... Although the patterns are relatively simple, and as a listener one can assimilate their form quite easily, it can be quite difficult to play along to them especially at those moments of change. So the piece can be thought of as a kind of intervention into the musical training and embedded musical vocabularies that the performer brings to the work. The point of the piece is not a perfect recital, but the difficulties that the performer encounters and the musical moments that these difficulties produce. Unfortunately I believe there is no recording of Jarlestams first performance of this piece - Focal Music #1. The piece was performed a second time by Okkyung Lee during her residency at Cafe Oto, London 2015. Focal Music #3 was performed with Laura Cannell at Baltic 39 (Newcastle, 2015) for Broken Telephone, an event which formed part of Peter J. Evanss exhibition Across Islands, Divides. Focal Music #4 was performed with Aby Vulliamy at The Leeds Library (Leeds, 2015). Focal Music #5a and Focal Music #5b were recorded with Sandro Mussida at Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (Karlsruhe, 2016) in the Kubus studio. The piece, performed on piano, takes two forms: the first based upon a six note pitch set of which any two notes are played at the same time; the second is formed of five discreet layers each with a single note. These were played in isolation following the same guide pattern and then later overlaid to form a single pseudo chord." - Mark Fell. Tracks mastered for this release by Phil Julian; Edition of 150.

For the performances featured on this edition, the speakers were moved by the following performers: Amy Kate Riach, Oliver Coates, Tom Rose, Naama Zisser, Rian Treanor, Galya Bisengalieva, Daniel Pioro, Hugh Brunt and Robert Ames. Title: Nam June Paik - A Work for Radio
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $9.00
"This hour-long compositional documentary was produced for the CBC Radio Series "Signature," and was originally broadcast on April 28, 1979. It was nominated for an ACTRA award for best radio documentary of the year. It is the result of a remarkable creative collaboration by artists such as John Cage, Charlotte Moorman, Philip Corner, and Nam June Paik himself with the author. Interspersed throughout the portrait are audio realizations by Ray Gallon of conceptual works by Nam June Paik. Thanks also to Lorne Tulk for remarkable engineering and creative contributions, and to Digby Peers for the courage to broadcast it. Ray Gallon has been a communicator for over 40 years, half of that time as a radio producer and audio artist. Although he had a classical music education, Ray gravitated early towards the avant-garde, and was fascinated by musique concrète, electronic music, so-called progressive jazz, and the multi-track experiments of the rock revolution in the 60s. His first exposure, on television, to the work of John Cage came very close to the moment when he wandered into a cinema by chance, and saw Fellinis 8 1/2. The one-two punch of these experiences left him delirious for the rest of his life. As a radio producer, he has worked in almost every department at CBC Radio except hard news. He was nurtured by Glenn Goulds experiments with "compositional documentaries," and developed his own style, inspired by Goulds work. In the late 80s, Rays focus turned towards new media, communications art, and computers. After moving to France in 1992, he continued to produce audio art and radio while teaching courses in new media and working as a technical communicator. Ray is currently a researcher with The Transformation Society, and shares his life between Barcelona, Spain, and the Languedoc region of France. " - The Tapeworm.

Title: Analog Apparitions
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Cassette-only release. Limited edition of 250 copies only. Recorded on a Marantz PMD222 with Maxell UR-90 cassettes, Brooklyn, NY, VI-xix-2010 to VII-xxiv-2010. Analog Apparitions, by Brooklyn-based composer Randy Gibson, is a pair of 30-minute compositions designed specifically to be recorded and released on cassette tape. A student of seminal minimalist composer La Monte Young, Gibson follows in the tradition of prime harmonic just intonation pioneered by Young in the 1960s. "Apparitions Of The Four Pillars," the underlying composition on this tape, explores the depth of the harmonic series through standard just intonation methods and the use of higher prime-harmonic relationships. In the 18 hours of recordings layered onto the two sides of the cassette, you can hear the mechanism of the tape itself, the evolution of improvisations over seven recording sessions, and the purity of sine waves in complex prime-harmonic relationships. Randy Gibson is a composer and performer, living and working in New York City. He works with structure, evolutionary compositional models, and improvisation to create enveloping and ritualistic works in just intonation. Gibson began his musical training at the age of six, studying percussion. In the summer of 1998, he travelled to Japan to study marimba with the great Keiko Abe. In early 2003, Gibson began composition studies in New York with La Monte Young. Continually humbling and revelatory, his studies with Young have brought greater clarity to his work, and reinforced his aesthetic convictions. Gibson combines live and electronic music, as well as aspects of the world music he has studied, most importantly raga singing in the Kirana tradition with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, but also Balinese and Japanese music. Gibsons work has been performed at festivals around the world including the Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art in Minnesota, The Internationale Tanzmesse NRW in Düsseldorf, The Boulder and Minnesota International Fringe Festivals, HOT DAM: the opening festival of the Denver Art Museum, the Sans Souci International Festival of Dance Cinema, the ISIM 3rd annual conference, the Erick Hawkins Legacy Forum in New York, the 2010 Korea Experimental Arts Festival in Seoul, and the 44th Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Darmstadt. Gibson is the artistic director of Avant Media, a non-profit organization dedicated to collaborative artistic endeavors. Cover features an illustration by Oscar Henriquez. Title: Remiksz
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Cassette-only release. Limited edition of 250 copies only. This is a remix of Fenneszs Szampler cassette, created by Stefan Goldmann, erasing Christian Fenneszs original samples one by one and replacing them with corresponding samples of his own, made between 1999-2010 for his Akai S5000 sampler, in the same sequence. As a result, this cassette contains no sounds whatsoever from Fenneszs original. While Szampler was a journey through Christian Fennesz own sample collection, Stefan Goldmann structured his own sound archive around the layout of Szampler, replacing it all sound-by-sound. The result is a dialog of the sonic atoms that built the works of two of todays most challenging musical minds. Its a first-ever glimpse behind the curtains -- a full anatomy of sound, more revealing than any interview on "how it was done." When asked for his opinions on the art of the remix, Mr. Goldmann was unavailable for comment. So, instead, heres some words, written by Trevor Horn in 1986, that appeared on the rear sleeve of Frankie Goes To Hollywoods Warriors Of The Wasteland 12" single: "This twelve wild disciples version of Warriors is, of course, a remix of the track that opens the Frankie album Liverpool. The question is now begged -- what is a remix? It used to be a change of clothes, now its a dream come true. There is one answer. On Liverpool, the members of Frankie Goes To Hollywood played Warriors with their own notoriously fair hands: touching their instruments, squeezing, banging, urging, making noises which were recorded by microphones onto a tape recorder. This so-called 12", this marketing invention, this golden gate to possibilities is in fact a total cheat. What is a remix? A total cheat. There is another answer. No one played anything, in any orthodox sense. It was all done by computers, very powerful computers (38 megabytes RAM 600 megabytes hard disk storage) juggling and organizing pre-recorded sounds. We all had a hand in it -- that is, myself, Steve, Andy Richards the keyboard player, the lads, Holly and Paul. We all peered over the computer operators shoulder at the little screen, to see what the hell was going on, willing the circuits to do their uncanny business. From the little screen leapt twelve wild disciples, with their gifts for the listener. What is a remix? A gift. -- when its Frankie, and Frankie only. And this 12" is Frankie. Only." Title: Havent I Seen You Before
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
Cassette-only in a limited edition of 250 copies. Berlin-based producer and head of the Macro Recordings label Stefan Goldmann couches his release for The Tapeworm thusly: "Since Im a less than mediocre guitar player, but a quite versatile editing engineer with a decade of experience of handling samplers and midi-sequencers, I could finally realize an old project which I can trace back to a lesson with my bass teacher in my teen days. He had found out a bass player with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra had recorded hours of improvisations and paid an engineer to cut it together into an enjoyable jazz album. The teacher, a profound jazz player himself, found this to be some sort of scam, while I was deeply impressed by the idea of merging hi-tech and improvisation. Finally, I had a reason to play and record some guitar for this fine project and cut it to death afterwards. Havent I Seen You Before is a cycle of five pieces, with two versions each, so it can be listened to as a continuous performance, as well as looped recordings when employing the reverse function some cassette players have. The latter can be done at any point, since the parts on the A and B sides match. All material on this album has a guitar (amplified and microphoned simultaneously) as its only sound source. These initial recordings were cut into loops with durations ranging from a fraction of a second to more than a minute. They were arranged into compositions, adding reverb, stereo panorama and volume adjustments. Layering the loops creates polymetric structures, but Ive tried to avoid the usual loop minimalism by the sheer number of looped segments which appear and disappear at distinctly different rates. Micro-loops vs. macro-loops is the main structural feature of the music on this cassette, playing around with a key feature of the format. Three recordings inspired this effort: John McLaughlins 1970 My Goals Beyond album, which offered a side of multitrack solo guitar improvisations (I believe this was the first jazz record to do this) as well as his unreleased guitar/voice album with his wife (John and Eve McLaughlin). McLaughlin was heavily under the influence of guru Sri Chinmoy and both albums have this very unique, dark drug/sect edge, adding an extremely intense quality to the modal guitar figures (well, probably also due to the Indian music he has been studying and merging with some impressionist composition techniques). I have tried to capture a bit of the mood and apply it to a loop-based, cut-up orgy. Another crucial record to me has been Derek Baileys Ballads -- Ive been astonished by the tidal movements in and out of the standards hes playing around with. So there is a harmonic base to my guitar mishandling, which is present throughout the entire album -- moving in and out of it. Id also like to note I applied an altered tuning to the guitar to achieve different natural harmonics than the ones one gets with the standard tuning -- and not to give in to the temptation of cutting some blues licks." --Stefan Goldmann, Berlin, 2009

“Ken Hollings is a writer based in London. He is the author of Destroy All Monsters (Marion Boyars),Welcome to Mars, and The Bright Labyrinth (the latter two available from Strange Attractor Press), and his work has appeared in numerous journals, catalogs, and anthologies. He has written and presented critically acclaimed programs for BBC Radio 3, Radio 4, and Resonance 104.4 FM. He has presented work at the Royal Institution, Tate Britain, Wellcome Institute, the Berlin Akademie der Künste, and the Venice Biennale. The three tracks that make up hisWorks for Magnetic Tape cassette release reflect his interest in how written text differs from spoken word. What makes them so distinct from each other -- and what happens when one is translated into the other? The text for "There Must Be Something Wrong With This, Sally" first appeared in volume 19 issue 4 of the Leonardo Electronic Almanac. This version features electronic backgrounds and interludes by Mark O. Pilkington. "Ideas Are One Thing, And What Happens Is Another" was commissioned in 2012 to celebrate the centenary of John Cages birth. It contains personal memories of Hollingss time with Cage, its title being a line from one of his early lectures. Graham Massey of 808 State supplied the backgrounds for this reading and produced and edited the final mix. The readings for both of these tracks were recorded by Simon James of The Simonsoundat the old BBC radio studios in Brighton, England. "Parasitic Infestation" was written as an introduction to The Art of Worms, documenting the cover art for The Tapeworms first 25 cassette releases. The book was launched at a special event, "Worm Eats Bear," in 2011 at The Bear Pit in London, where this reading of his essay was recorded live. Limited edition of 100. "Dimitris Papadatos (b.1981, USA) is a composer, musician, and sound artist based in Athens, Greece. Jay Glass Dubs is an exercise of style focusing on a counter-factual historical approach of dub music, stripped down to its basic drum/bass/vox/effects form. His work has been presented in various institutions and festivals from the Transmediale, the Athens Biennale, the Onassis Cultural Centre and Fasma Festival, to the Athens/Epidaure Festival, Cynetart Festival and the Greek National Theatre, while he has composed scores for award winning short films and pioneering theatrical performances. His music has been featured in various radio shows including Trevor Jacksons show on NTS Radio, Sam Segals show on WFMU, Tristan Baths "Spools Out" show on UKs Resonance FM and the "Tabs Out" podcast. Dislocated Folklore, recorded especially for The Tapeworm, consists of two 30-minute long tracks that incorporate mainly stretched-out 003" sample recordings of 90s Ragga 12" single intros combined with recordings of a Quran recitation from a Turkish TV channel and Jay Glass Dubs signature hybrid hardware/software set-up. The title refers to (and therefore is an intended pun of) the misinterpretation of "otherism", "orientalism", "exoticism", etc. - phrases often used over the past 100 years to describe a tendency of metropolitan musicologists to intellectualize forms of expression that have a very strong relation to roots, religion, and ethics." - The Tapeworm.

Format: Cass

"Millimetre is Terence J. McGaughey, who has made critically-praised radical pop music with this moniker since 2004. Millimetre has released four albums -- Love Won Out (2005), Obsidian (2007), Heliography (2009), and 13 Homes (2011), all on Orectic Records. Millimetre writes: "Sex Dreams of the I Ching started out as six love songs with strange, fragmented structures that had titles inspired by readings from the I Ching. I didnt know what to do with them, but kept returning to them over and over -- they had an uncanny quality while being totally dissonant and broken. One day I found some recordings I made on a four-track years ago with a WEM Copycat -- mostly my vocalizations looped endlessly -- and out of curiosity played some while playing the love songs in the background. Thats more or less how it began. A fortnight later, all six songs morphed themselves into drones and then, with some minor embellishments, and unfolding melodies, the titles magically fit the new music. Sumetha and James added their parts and the album was done -- no mixing required. As a listener, you may find this album is perfect for playing in noisy environments." - Terence J McGaughey, London, September 27, 2012. " - The Tapeworm.

Title: And It Could Have Been Dead...
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Achim Mohné experiments with the space and time intervals of media, photography, video, digital image production, as well as with sound. His experiments bring to light the surprising uses that lie dormant in todays technology. For The Tapeworm, Achim focused on audiotape itself: as material, as body, as signifier and as sculpture. Some notes on the sources and methods used to create And It Could Have Been Dead... follow: A1., "How To Use This Cassette" is mixed from a 1982 Blaupunkt instruction tape for a cassette player. A2., "Widerverwendung" uses material from "MediaRecycling," a live performance at Gesellschaft für aktuelle Kunst (GAK) Bremen, 1999. This was a performance for opened-up VCRs, monitors, scissors, glue, medical gloves, cleansing alcohol. Sections of tapes were randomly chosen, cut with a scissors, then taped back live together in a different order. The version on this cassette was mixed in 2011. A3., "All I Have Ever Listened To" was mixed from "Sozialisationsmusik" -- a live performance at Academy of Media Arts, Cologne (1997) for three to eight turntables, cassette recorders and a mixer. With their help, vinyl records and cassettes from a great variety of genres (classic, electro, punk, rock, jazz, childrens audio dramas) are layered-up and mixed live. The version on The Tapeworms tape was edited in 2011. A4. and B1. were created using hand-operated cassette recorders. The tapes used for "Once Upon A Time They All Lived Happily Ever After" were all of fairy-tales. B2. ("Syntactical Swap") is a work for cassette recorder and turntable. Finally, B3. is a short blast, using beginnings and endings of The Tapeworm cassettes, #01-#34 as its sound source." -Tapeworm

Title: Something You Are Or Something You Do
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Pinkcourtesyphone is a continuing project by Los Angeles-based sound artist Richard Chartier. He is considered one of the key figures in the current of reductionist sound art which has been termed both microsound and neo-modernist. Chartiers minimalist digital work explores the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, perception, and the act of listening itself. Pinkcourtesyphone is a more emotional, dare one say musical, side of his work. Pinkcourtesyphone is dark but not arch, with a slight hint of humor. Pinkcourtesyphone is amorphous, changing, and slips in-and-out of consciousness. Pinkcourtesyphone operates like a syrup-y dream and strives to be both elegant and detached. Pinkcourtesyphone has collaborated with the likes of Cosey Fanni Tutti, Kid Congo Powers, harpist Gwyneth Wentink, AGF, William Basinski, and Evelina Domnitch. Pinkcourtesyphones work has been released internationally on labels including: Editions Mego (Austria), Room40 (Australia), Line (US), Important Records (US), Dragons Eye Recordings (US), Farmacia901 (IT), Champion Version (UK), Boomkat (UK), and IO Sound (Canada). Chartiers sound works/installations have been presented in galleries and museums internationally and he has performed his work live across Europe, Japan, Australia, and North America at digital art/electronic music festivals and exhibits. In 2000, he formed the recording label Line and has since curated its continuing documentation of compositional and installation work by international sound artists/composers exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism. Title: Mesmer
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Cassette-only release. Edition of 250 copies. Mesmer was Peter Rehbergs first-ever solo composition, originally released in 1995 as part of Mesmervariations, a (long-deleted) 2CD by Ash International presented in an oversized plastic wallet with eight card inserts. That release contained various original compositions influenced by the work of Friedrich Mesmer, and included pieces by Ryoji Ikeda, Gescom, Edvard Graham Lewis, Robert Hampson, Bruce Gilbert, CM Von Hausswolff and Drome (Bernd Friedmann). The artists featured on this release were given a copy of the vinyl recording Mesmer (Ash 1.8) and asked to compose a piece influenced by the work of Friedrich Mesmer, the 19th century "animal magnetist and hypnotist." The brief was -- there is no brief; method and style were left entirely to the discretion of the composer. Rehbergs contribution is reproduced in its entirety here, the B-side of the cassette containing a copy of the weathered dubplate of the track he cut in 1996 for personal DJ use." -The Tapeworm

Title: Infernal Furniture
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Infernal Furniture is a collection of piano sonatas, backed with a version -- "Infernal Dub Furniture" -- where the recordings are subjected to the studio effects of delay and reverb, changing the surface and meaning of the music. The piano pieces themselves are drawn from the collection 10 Sonatas Ten (2010). Piano and electronic processing by; composed and produced by Andrew Poppy. Mastered by Zachary James Watkins. Ultra-Reds Dont Rhine writes: "A provocative proposition; Satie meets dub procedures. It makes me think about the erased link between jazz improvisation and dub where, in the latter, the improvised instrument is the mixing deck. If, as Cardew said, improvisation is the search for a sound to interpret a context, dub raises the stakes of that hermeneutic to the fight against Babylon. And then theres "Infernal Dub Furniture." To reinsert the anti-Eurocentric pulse back into the Euro-soundscape of Satie (the most Euro of Euro-soundscapes) is very subversive. This brings to mind Terre Thaemlitzs project of several yearsa go, rendering the roboticism of Kraftwerk, Devo and Gary Numan according to the principles of rubato -- all done via step-time programming. Its always interesting how this dubbing (or queering, as Terre would insist) also unleashes an affect of melancholy. An affect for a world whose evidence is unseen and unheard. But deeply desired." --Dont Rhine, Hollywood, CA, February 3, 2012." -The Tapeworm.

Title: The Fights of the Sound Cable
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $9.00
"So, things have gone full circle. Colin Potters first cassette was released in 1980 and here we are around 33 1/3 years later, observing the release of another cassette. The intervening period has seen a number of developments. The ICR label was inaugurated and still continues today, having released over 70 cassettes, records, and CDs. IC Studio was established soon after and has been operated by Potter (almost) continuously since the early 80s, at a number of locations. There, Potter has recorded, mixed, and produced a wide array of projects. He has gained a reputation for innovative mixing and sound processing, working with artists such as Current 93, Fovea Hex, Ora, Organum, Monos, Andrew Chalk, Jonathan Coleclough, Paul Bradley, Darren Tate, and, most notably, with Steven Stapleton on many albums by the renowned Nurse With Wound. Several solo works have been released, as well as many collaborations. For reasons best known to himself, he decided to try his hand at live performance and is astonished to be still allowed to do so. The second side of the cassette is actually a recording of a rehearsal for such an event and is documented, if only to prove that he does in fact actually plan ahead for these things. The first side is an exercise in mathematical repetition patterns, by someone whose counting is somewhat dubious." - The Tapeworm.

Title: Sinus
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"A simple synthetic-based, sine wave-generating freeware program was used as a sound source for creating single pulses and long static tones in several different tonal pitches. No additional sound design or other analog or digital processing was used during the creation of the sounds. The single sound elements were layered and sequenced into different movements of varying shapes and colors, focusing on the pure essence and aesthetics of sound. Each track interweaves longer, stretched, tonal segments and rhythmic patterns into sine-curved compositions. The four Sinus tracks were sequenced at 120 beats per minute in 1999 by Steinbrüchel. They were previously released as a personal CD-R edition of 10 copies. Digital music kindly released by The Tapeworm on analog cassette in 2012. Biography: Steinbrüchels musical work deals mainly with the texture and atmosphere of sound. In the studio, he works relentlessly towards the creation of new sounds. The accumulation, collection and the arrangement of those sounds is revealed during his live sets. The sounds one hears in his music form both intricate patterns and spacious landscapes. In his experiments with electronically-created sound, Steinbrüchel portrays an acute awareness for beauty. His productions follow a distinctly sophisticated aesthetic. Flowing calmly through the listener, his music invokes a glowing space which invites the listener to travel within the sound. Steinbrüchels compositions and conceptual arrangements connect him to the genre of New Music rather than club music, locating his work more in the realm of digital sound art. Ralph Steinbrüchel, born in 1969, studied Communication Design at Central Saint Martins School in London, where he acquired a Masters of Arts and Design with distinction. He now lives and works as a musician and graphic designer in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2002, his composition Zwischen.raum (Domizil, Zurich, 2002) was distinguished with the Max Brand Award for Electronic Music (phonoTAKTIK.02 Festival, New York). In the same year, he received a compositional scholarship from Pro Helvetia, Arts Council of Switzerland, to work on his release Circa (LINE, New York, 2003). His last solo release in 2011 was the CD narrow (Room40)." -The Tapeworm.

"TV as eyes. TV eye on you. Television, the drug of the nation. The ultimate seduction, the realm etc. Control, by them... This Television Set, however, is just a television set. No abyss you gaze into, with the known consequences. Its a mere nocturnal distraction. Pastime, but no paradise. Refusal, and no participation. A light in your room. It is a translation of observational notes into sound. You have not lost control again. Roger Semsroth is an artist of many guises, and this is one of his finest. Music written for the loneliest boys in town, who get the girl in the end. Or vice versa. And there are no references either -- none! Trip the switch." --Finn Johannsen, Berlin, November 10, 2014.

Title: Omegapavilion
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $9.00
"UnicaZürn is Stephen Thrower and David Knight. Ωmegapavilion consists of three improvisations played, recorded, and edited by UnicaZürn specifically for this release across one weekend in March 2015 in Battersea, London. Instrumentation included ARP Solina String Ensemble, EMS Synthi AKS, electric guitar, and two iPads. Heres Joe Banks, writing about the group for The Quietus: "UnicaZürn is an ongoing collaboration between David Knight and Stephen Thrower, two musicians with some serious avant rock credentials -- Knight was a key member of Shock Headed Peters and songwriting partner to the divine Danielle Dax, while Thrower was with Coil for eight years and is also one half of Cyclobe. The music they make together using a variety of vintage keys and reed instruments is a viscerally organic strain of proto-ambient, strongly influenced by the pre-sequencer Tangerine Dream of Zeit and Atem. Were firmly in drone territory here, but a long way away from throwing a few synth loops into GarageBand and hoping for the best." - The Tapeworm.

"Cassette-only release. Edition of 250 copies. Two readings of the short story Johnny Remember Me by its author Cathi Unsworth and by Pete Woodhead (O Yuki Conjugate/The Sons Of Silence). Cathi Unsworth is a writer and editor who lives and works in London. She is the author of three pop-cultural crime novels, Bad Penny Blues, The Singer and The Not Knowing, and the editor of the short story collection London Noir, all published by Serpents Tail. Cathi has written on music, film, art, fashion and culture for Sounds, Bizarre, BFI Flipside, Mojo and Uncut, amongst many others. Her collaborator on this release is Pete Woodhead, an electronic composer who cut his musical teeth as part of O Yuki Conjugate and The Sons Of Silence and is now best known for his soundtrack contribution to the hit British zombie movie Shaun Of The Dead. "He stood at the back of the room, in a smartly cut pale blue suit, so cleanly shaven his skin still had a rosy glow from the razors kiss, thick brown hair set into a shiny pompadour that looked as though it had been set in plastic. His bulbous dark blue eyes darted around the cellar, and he pulled on a cigarette fretfully. For a second it seemed that he was too nervous to come across the floor, but then his eyes became still as they settled on what he was searching for. With a sudden sense of purpose, he walked towards Johnny. And that was when all the trouble started." - The Tapeworm.

Price: $8.00
"This is a cassette-only limited edition of 250 copies. Who on earth are The Van Patterson Quartet? The Tapeworm stumbled upon the lost psych rock recording, Live at F.W. by The Van Patterson Quartet, late during a sleepless night. A link started a chain of events -- the Wormery would not sleep until the answer had been found! "Who on earth are The Van Patterson Quartet?" we asked ourselves. We sent out feelers via our contacts. We waited. Replies came back -- digital shrugs, all expressing a deep fascination that something sounding so splendid could remain unearthed for so long. Then, "Mr. Big" stepped in. Quite by chance, he was neighbours with one of the band. Such serendipity. He hooked us up. Letters were written, requests made, permissions granted, and a few short weeks later a copy of Live at F.W., mailed with a blurry Polaroid, landed on our desk. We sat back, and listened properly for the first time. We were blown away. We had just been given possibly the last great unreleased psych rock recording. Who on earth are The Van Patterson Quartet? This recording dates, we believe, from the late 60s. It features this hitherto unknown band in full flight, live. It needs to be heard to be believed. Funky, fuzzed- up, flipped-out, fucked and fried. Forty minutes of hallucinating Hammond and ferocious feedback. Thats who they are." - The Tapeworm.

Price: $8.00
"Cassette-only release. Edition of 250 copies. "Black Spirituals was recorded during fall 2009 in Northern California. These four works grew out of intense dialogue with sound artist Morgan Craft that dealt with our mutual interests in questioning the stakes and pushing our art amidst a landscape of sameness. Its these spaces where ideas on race, gender, sex, politics, etc. inform the imaginations of artists in communities and influence new works. Also around this time, I found a dusty tape recording of a lecture from the late 70s on the topic of Black Spirituals given by scholar and musician Bernice Reagon, an original member of the vocal group Sweet Honey On The Rock. This tape has helped me incorporate into my performance, stories and voices of New America. These improvised tapestries are tuned by ear and offered as meditations. What does Black Spirituals mean to you?" --Zachary James Watkins, Santa Cruz, CA, March 24, 2010. Zachary James Watkins: PAIA analog synthesizer (A1, B2), guitar (A2, B1), bass (A2), SuperCollider (A2), cassette (B1), percussion (B1), Casio (B1, B2); Jordan Glenn: drums and percussion (B1). Title: Infinite Hum
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Composed, performed and recorded by Where Is This from January to April 2011 at The Aluminium Factory. Where Is This is the solo noise project of Mark Ward. Founded in 2007 to explore and "fuck about" with sound, WIT amassed a slew of recordings that, as well as becoming active in the noise trading scene, led him to create the small press label Bored Bear Recordings, whose blog is also the home of Where Is This. WIT releases can vary in style and could be described as noise, harsh noise, power electronics, ambient, drone, and everything in between. Nowadays, his work mostly focuses on harsh noise walls, sometimes with an ambient/drone edge, and creating highly textured walls of sound. Recent releases (amongst others) include Paunch (2013), Learning to Drown (2013), Rue Des Lombards (2012) and Narcissus at the Gym (2011). His records have been released on many record labels including Kovorox Sound, Victimology Rec., Deadline Noise Recordings, and Quagga Curious Sounds. In other lives, he is also a published poet and a cabaret performer. Cassette-only limited edition of 150 copies." - The Tapeworm.

Title: Aeroforms
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"Aeroforms 1 and 2 were made around 1984/85 using a BBC Microcomputer with a Music 500 outboard synthesiser and Ample music software. This release has been mastered from that original cassette recording. I developed a generative music programme that created sound pieces within a set of boundaries. Tones were produced within a range of sound qualities, frequencies, periods and start times. Once the parameters were selected randomisation was used so that the programme chose which tones to play, how to play them, when and for how long. The parameters used made for completely different sonic experiences. Aeroforms 2 is a meditative drone piece. Aeroforms 1 is an ambient backdrop that doesnt even require the listener -- like a piece of audio furniture. Side one is for deep listening. Side two is for not-even-listening... Every time the programme was run a different performance would occur. The recordings feature the first 45 minutes of each piece which are eternal in length..." --Paul H Williams, London, November 13, 2014.

Title: ZA86
Format: Cass
Label: The Tapeworm
Country: UK
Price: $8.00
"ZA86 is a 25-year-old radio reporters personal journey in the final, most repressive moments of a hated regime. The last years of apartheid were the most brutal, as a low-level civil war was battled out on the dusty streets of South Africas black townships. Released on the 2015 25th anniversary of the day Nelson Mandela walked to freedom, ZA86 is edited from nine tapes in the unique cassette archive of Turnstyle News, unlocked for the first time from a Cape Town cellar. It takes the listener to a violent world with moments of great beauty. The reporter, far from being edited out, is very much present, as are the thumps and bumps he hears in his headphones. From a May Day call to arms by Winnie Mandela to the extreme views of white right-wingers; from 19-year-old platoon leaders to the aftermath of an attack by police and soldiers in Soweto; from the words of envoy Terry Waite to the funeral of a television cameraman and the Band Aid-like pop song released by the apartheid regime, ZA86 unflinchingly documents the disturbing reality of 1986 in South Africa. A journey into the heart of apartheid. Edited by Stephen Wrench. Tape selection by Diane McCarthy. Presented in mono, in keeping with the original cassettes. Dedicated to the democratic spirit of Gerald Kraak. Edition of 150." - The Tapeworm
