Artist: ARKANSAW MAN
Title: Arkansaw Man
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $11.00
"Here is the unlikely CD debut of Arkansaw Man, a wildly obscure San Francisco art-punk band that flickered to life all so briefly in 1981. 25 minutes of music, 25 years ago -- and sayonara. Still, the best things in life -- in the life of music, anyway -- often are tucked away where they are hard to find. With a brilliant economy of means and a sparseness reminiscent of dub, the band got an amazing jump start on post-rock. It revels in terse and choppy guitar, the languid, sour leakage of keyboards and horns, and occasional lyrics sung as ironic disclaimer, while the spare yet vaguely ominous bass lines recall Gang of Four played back at 4 RPM. A quarter of a century ago, the spindly funk machinery and discordant scraping guitars of Arkansaw Man failed to give the world much to latch onto, so its music got lost, abandoned in a locker at pop cultures bus depot, the key left floating in a gutter somewhere one day to be scavenged. Theres no better place to find a glimmer of artistic gold." - Table Of The Elements.

Artist: CALE, JOHN
Title: New York in the 1960s
Format: 5 LP Box Set
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $58.00
"Five LPs in black-lacquered wood box with libretto, bonus tracks and more. John Cales great credit, both inside and outside the Velvet Underground, was to have found the inoculation dosage that would addict the music industry to SOUND without alienating one world from the other. But outside the official VU there was also an uncut version of the virus, incubated behind the slum walls of the 1960s Lower East Side, and maintained live in the liquid nitrogen of these insolently recorded reel-to-reel audiotapes, recorded and produced by Tony Conrad and now available in the massive Table of the Elements 5xLP boxed set, New York in the 1960s." - Table Of The Elements. "Vinyl versions of the three previous John Cale albums on TOTE (Sun Blindness Music, Dream Interpretation: Inside The Dream Syndicate Vol. II, Dream Interpretation: Inside The Dream Syndicate Vol. II. Side 10 features 2 bonus tracks which previously appeard on the Jack Smith CDs on TOTE." - FE.

Artist: CALE/TONY CONRAD/ANGUS MACLISE/LA MONTE YOUNG/MARIAN ZAZEELA, JOHN
Title: Inside the Dream Syndicate Volume I: Day of Niagara (1965)
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"From 1962 through 1965 John Cale, Tony Conrad, Angus MacLise, La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela participated in a collaborative ensemble that articulated the big bang of minimalism. Utilizing long duration and precise pitch, they forged an aggressively mesmerizing dream music -- denying the activity of composition and elaborating shared ideas of performance and improvisation. However, the many rehearsal and performance recordings from this period were repressed, and remained inaccessibly buried until this moment. With the recent discovery of an additional cache of tapes, now restored and digitally remastered, the world can step Inside the Dream Syndicate for the very first time." - Table Of The Elements.[For information about LaMonte Youngs response to this release (which he did not authorize, and which he considers to be very poor in quality, with a missing segment of music, inaccurate sound mix, etc), please refer to: http://www.melafoundation.org/statemen.htm]

Artist: CHATHAM, RHYS
Title: Two Gongs (1971)
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $16.50
"The hour-long Two Gongs fills the entirety of [this] disc with its ethereal, droning psychedelia. While written in 1971, the 89 recording documented here features Chatham, along with fellow composer Yoshimase Wada coaxing heavy, overlapping tones out of a pair of Chinese gongs. The instruments buzz and hum, moving in waves from deafening rattles to soft, muted drones. The monstrous noise that Chatham concocts is far more akin to the seismic crashes of monstrously distorted guitar feedback than that of two unprocessed slabs of metal, and it proves the composers interest in creating a similar world of sound out of whatever instrument currently proved his muse. On disc, the performance is jaw-droppingly powerful, a monumental chunk of glorious noise." - Table Of The Elements.

Artist: CONRAD, TONY
Title: Bryant Park Moratorium Rally (1969)
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $16.50
"An October afternoon in 1969. Midtown Manhattan. A rally in Bryant Park against the Vietnam War. Down 42nd Street towards Times Square, Tony Conrad is adjusting microphones in his 5th floor loft, one directed at the TV set -- where it will pick up live local news coverage -- the other pointing out the window, where the echo of speeches and crowd noise mingles with the oceanic rush of crosstown traffic. As the event is about to begin, he rolls tape. Thirty-four years later, we hear what he heard. And the juncture, for so many reasons, could not be more critical. As the Bush Administration pursues a risky military agenda in the Middle East -- one with unsettling long-term implications both at home and abroad -- we see a nation not divided, as in the Vietnam Era, but strangely complacent. Our media-saturated reality functions like a drug, instantly televised warfare a new entertainment, and organized public dissent a novelty at home and a roaring chorus everywhere else. Conrads recording of the Oct. 15 Vietnam Moratorium Rally is an eerie flashback that offers urgent new insights into our own lives and times, post-9/11 and full on into a new millennium." - Table Of The Elements.

Title: Fantastic Glissando
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $16.50
"Its 1969, and Tony Conrad wants to take you Higher. Celebrated for the thrilling roar of his amplified violin, Conrad is a founding father of minimalism and a giant in the American soundscape. Now Conrads own Audio ArtKive imprint presents the first in a series of releases that reveal the wild breadth of his 40-year career, including field recordings, piano compositions, film soundtracks and more. Fantastic Glissando (1969) is a series of (d)evolving electronic compositions created with sine-wave oscillators. The instrumentation is different, but the effect is typical Conrad: soaring, aggressively textured and jet-engine massive.  This first-time CD release contains an extra ten-minute bonus track not included on the original LP version." - Table Of The Elements.

Title: Joan of Arc
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $16.50
"Tony Conrad is a founding father of minimalism and a giant in the American soundscape. The indefatigable Conrad kept busy during the Revolution Summer of 1968. In addition to his reunion recordings with John Cale (documented in the Cale set New York in the 1960s), Conrad starred in Ira Cohens legendary film The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda and made extensive solo recordings, including Joan of Arc, available here for the first time. One of Conrads personal favorites, its a long piece for pump organ, in which he conjures both searing white heat and malignant gothic dread. An excerpt was used as the soundtrack for the Piero Heliczer film of the same name, but Conrad feels a greater affinity with that years Cohen film; accordingly, Cohen graciously provided restored stills from Thunderbolt Pagoda for the packaging of this release. Cohens sumptuous imagery - which Jimi Hendrix described as looking through butterfly wings - features a blissed-out and shirtless Conrad replete in pencil mustache, mascara and blood-red turban. The man is just downright cool - about as cool as Hendrix, and almost always louder." - Table Of The Elements.

Title: Outside The Dream Syndicate Alive
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $16.50
2005 release. "Minimalist pioneer Tony Conrad and notorious Krautrock progenitors Faust met just three times: in the studio to record the ground-breaking Outside the Dream Syndicate in 1972, and twice on the concert stage in the mid-1990s. This recording documents their third and final encounter, at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, February 18, 1995. The difference between the original session and this live event is astonishing. While Conrads aggressive string sound was tamed in the studio by producer Uwe Nettlebeck (Conrad has complained that the mix made him sound like a hippy), here it is full of menace and ferocity, and in tandem attack with the equally belligerent violin of Jim ORourke, it conjures a raging wall of sound.." - Table Of The Elements.

Artist: FAHEY, JOHN
Title: Hard Time Empty Bottle Blues
Format: LP
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"One of acoustic musics true innovators and eccentrics, John Fahey was a crucial figure in expanding the boundaries of the acoustic guitar. He drew from blues, Native American music, Indian ragas, experimental dissonance, and pop, and was the first to demonstrate that the finger-picking techniques of traditional country and blues steel-string guitar could be used to express a world of non-traditional musical ideas-harmonies and melodies more readily associated with Bartok, Charles Ives, or the music of India. Fahey played with a fierce imagination and versatility, and while his idiosyncrasy may have limited him to a cult following, it also ensured that his work continues to sound startlingly original." - Table Of The Elements.

Title: From the Dark (South Island)
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $16.50
"Multi-talented Alastair Galbraith is the glue that binds the New Zealand underground. His work ranges from achingly lyrical violin for artists as disparate as Peter Jefferies and the Bats, to the feedback squalls he conjures as member of A Handful Of Dust, to the otherworldly miniatures he crafts for his own solo albums. However, in recent years, Galbraith, along with American Matt De Gennaro, has developed another remarkable performance idiom, one that is positioned closer to the sounding sculpture of Harry Bertoia. In From the Dark (South Island), architectural idiosyncrasies are transformed into nuanced and hypnotic audio. Wires - some as long as 100 feet - are affixed throughout a building. When the wires are taught and stroked with rosined hands or a piece of leather, longitudinal vibrations are sent to the points of attachment, creating a natural resonator. It is not the wires that make the sound, but the wall, railing or window frames at their end; wire length and room acoustics determine the pitch. The result, achieved in a veil of total darkness, is a beautiful and eerie confluence of chance and accident, architecture and improvisation. As Galbraith himself puts it, There is some quite magical feeling of communion turning the lights off and making the building sing." - Table Of The Elements

Title: The Dew Line
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $16.50
"Twenty years is long enough: Its time to acknowledge Michael Morley as an indie-rock patriarch. And why not? As the guitarist and vocalist for New Zealand noise-trip trio The Dead C and the man behind Gate (ostensibly a solo project, although Sonic Youths Lee Ranaldo makes frequent guest appearances), Morley is the rare artist that record-hounds love to unearth: an isotope in the body Pop, radiating an invisible influence. With scores of micro-batch releases and an unmistakably intimate performance idiom, Morley ranks in the company of Jandek or Loren Connors, but its geographic isolation rather than social disengagement that has deflected his work from reaching more ears. Still, if you dont recognize his name, youve heard his reverberations, in the ambient post-rock of Flying Saucer Attack and Labraford, the neo-psychedelia of Bardo Pond, and the fidelity-challenged whorl of Pavement and Sebadoh. Recorded in 1993 and out of print since, Gates The Dew Line is the first part of his rock trilogy (followed by The Monolake in 1996 and The Wisher Table in 1999). Rock it does. Typical Gate/Dead C no-fi guitar subduction and Morleys locked-in-the-car-trunk vocals are prominent, but theres also a hefty amount of scraping synthesizer menace and paleozoic riffage. The crust of noise is there, but crack open the sonic geode and youll discover some nifty songstyling. In someone elses universe, the gem of an opening track, Millions, gets play on AM radio, while Have Not climbs the FM charts. Full of brooding atmospherics, The Dew Line is the most -- dare we say it -- accessible of any of Morleys records, and it stands on an equal footing with his Dead C high-water mark, Harsh 70s Reality, as an anti-rock rock classic." - Table Of The Elements.

Artist: GILBERT, BC
Title: Ordier
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Though the era of punk was widely regarded as a time of extremes, legendary group Wire and guitarist BC Gilbert provided the most problematic, visionary and ironic response to the music scene of the mid-70s. The angular minimalism of their sound, the abstract, deadpan lyrics and a penchant for confrontation betrayed the art school origins and made Wire an idiosyncratic triumph. With bravery, integrity, absolute courage and energy -- and more ideas and concepts than any other musician of his era -- Gilbert continues to forge ahead. In his post-Wire work, he has utilized a variety of modernist tools and explored a vast range of experimental music, from electronic noise to ambient drones. Table of the Elements is now pleased to present the contemporaneous CD, Ordier . Recorded for the label in 1996 but subsequently believed lost, Ordier lets loose a wild swarm of electronics. As Gilbert writes: Im taking a very, very minimalist approach and really getting inside some of the sounds and chasing them to destruction. Its done mostly with effects, guitar pedals pushed to the absolute limit. Beautifully packaged in a custom-designed wood case, and featuring photographs by prominent photographer Bettina Herzner." - Table Of The Elements.

Artist: KANE, JONATHAN
Title: I Looked At the Sun
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $12.00
"Jonathan Kanes rollicking, majestic and critically-acclaimed debut February set you up with his lustrous, deep-grooved sound; now comes the bare-knuckled knock-out punch. On the opening track, BQE, Kane compliments his signature wall of guitars with the high-lonesome serenade of pedal steel, then puts that pedal to the metal and barrels through the psychedelic badlands of Mississippi Fred Mcdowells classic I Looked at the Sun. Add the Dixie-fried strut of ZZ Tops Billy Giibbons to Glenn Brancas guitar armies and youre still only halfway to Kanes mind-blowing reinvention of both minimalism and the blues -- its a blistering days drive from anything youve heard before." - Table Of The Elements.

Artist: TRANSMISSION
Title: Transmission
Format: CD
Label: Table Of The Elements
Country: USA
Price: $11.00
"Here is an extraordinary excavation from the buried history of the Downtown NYC scene: the unreleased, self-titled Transmission EP, recorded in 1981-82. Comprised of Jonathan Kane and Daniel Galliduani, the duo is one-half of the original version of the behemoth band Swans. Transmission both preceded and ran concurrent with the formation of Swans (Michael Gira was enough of a fan that he mixed Transmissions few live shows), and much of their material evolved into Swans tracks, including the standout Weakling. Unclassifiable within any conventional genre, it recalls the improvisation and complex, trance-inducing beats of North African music while adding a crust of no wave bluster and enough percussive artillery to sink a small island. Galliduani, whose saxophone is so heavily treated and processed that it sounds like a wall of guitars, lays down drones then adds weird, fierce, Eastern-tinged polyphonics; meanwhile Kane is a frenzied dervish, generating complex cross-tempos and rhythmic subdivision." - Table Of The Elements.
