Artist: ALTHOFF, KAI (FANAL)
Title: Fanal
Format: LP
Label: Sonig
Country: Germany
Price: $25.00
"Kai Althoff, better known for his internationally renowned work in fine arts and his band "Workshop" (releases for labels like sonig, Ladomat, Lage Dor, Captain Trip and Finlayson) has released his second soloalbum under the pseudonym "Fanal"." - Sonig. "The second Fanal album is released, and as you might know, the man behind is Kai Althoff. It features some extraordinary, almost brutally nasty pieces about eviction and deportation as well as a song about the instructions of a sexually obsessed man. There are almost always vocals, and none of them are nice or pleasing. One of the songs now is SO German, so dont fool about it now and listen, follow the example: "He is not stupid, the German." The music is guitar, bass, synthesizer, drum computer and vocals, as already mentioned. To me it seems to be rather a vehicle to emphasise the words. The rhythm is always faster, apart from the track "Mit Den Hunden" (with the dogs). And finally Fanal poses the question: What does it mean to have a mother? Ones values are dismantled, taken apart and replaced by aggression... its Fanal again, heralding a fight by physical as well as mental means. For some this music is only distinguished by its nastiness, but theyll find that all they can hope for is an hour of gentle reckoning..." - K.Althoff. "The second Fanal album appropriates styles from across Colognes heritage of alternative music, from Krautrock to some of the more contemporary techno and electro-acoustic productions. Offering German lyrics that are fiercely brutal and coarse, Fanal II provides accounts of issues such as sexual obsession, eviction, deportation and even the occult.... Each of the eleven tracks emphasizes the impossibility of any coherent narrative for the types of persona that Althoff adopts, tending towards more corporeal, pre-verbal evocations." - Frieze magazine. Strictly limited to 300 copies. Highly Recommended!

Artist: CATANI, PATRIC/CHRIS IMLER/JORINDE VOIGT
Title: Lemniscate
Format: LP
Label: Sonig
Country: Germany
Price: $35.00
"The lemniscate is, fundamentally a mechanism for the infinite. A lemniscus or ribbon that chases itself in a figure of eight describes the repeated and unending journey of the unbounded. Jorinde Voigt draws structures energized by real and imagined possibilities to investigate finite boundaries of systems. She frames and moderates these investigations with spatiotemporal data, information on speed, volume, and an overlaying of sequences. Her notations embrace the concept that elements of equal value co-exist in a logic and proportion of their own. In 2008, following Voigts concepts, composers Patric Catani and Chris Imler, developed the lazy 8 of the infinity motif at Watermill-Center, NYC, a laboratory for performance, in the form of an acoustic cluster. The looped composition formed of 16 chapters, snakes around 7 points realized using a multi-channel arrangement of 6 loudspeakers and thus describes the shape of a lemniscate through pure sound. To enable home listening, the multi-channel installation has been mixed down by the artists as a stereo version. LP in a limited edition of 260 copies." - Sonig.

Artist: WAISVISZ, MICHEL
Title: In Tune
Format: CD
Label: Sonig
Country: Germany
Price: $16.00
"A collection of live recordings made between 1977 and 2000 by Amsterdams Studio For Electro-Instrumental Music (STEIM) director, Crackle Box inventor, and software/hardware designer MICHEL WAISVISZ. Edited by Sonig label head FRANK DOMMERT, the album is a very musical, humorous, and fresh approach on Waisviszs 1978 debut. Amid morphing noise-strangely leaping reggae quotations, modulation sessions seemingly forgotten in time and space, and hard, metallic stacattos of chords-outlines of songs and flashes of harmony are always discernable. Nine tracks of playfully absurd and consistently innovative sounds." - Sonig.
