Artist: BLACKOUT BEACH
Title: Skin of Evil
Format: LP
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"Blackout Beach is the solo nom de guerre of Carey Mercer (from Frog Eyes and Swan Lake), and Skin of Evil is his second full-length. Skin of Evil is remarkable in the sense that a. it contains a story, and b. it sticks to the story; a rare occurrence in these free times. "Donna" is the subject, and each of her lovers (past & present) say their peace in song (Donna gets her song, too). Composed, played and recorded entirely by Mercer alone, these songs revel in the dark side of the heady proto-punk Cleveland axis (e.g. Peter Laughner, David Thomas) with a minimal, textural & almost Suicide-ish sense of pop form and the experimental nature of recent Scott Walker works. LP version released in an edition of 500." - Soft Abuse

Artist: BOWLES, NATHAN
Title: A Bottle, A Buckeye
Format: LP
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $19.00
2016 repress. Originally released in 2012. "Hard to believe our planet had not yet been graced with NATHAN BOWLES solo recordings until now, but such is the case. After years of playing in celebrated ensembles, touring the world, and honing his skill on a host of instruments, Bowles unveils his first solo effort: A Bottle, A Buckeye. The spacious, rollicking, meditative, and above all powerful record bridges the methods and constructs of his two most notable groups-THE BLACK TWIG  PICKERS (old-time) and PELT (outer limits)-while inhabiting a space all its own. LP version includes a download." -Soft Abuse.

Artist: CAR COMMERCIALS
Title: Erics Diary
Format: LP
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"Car Commericals are generally uncomfortable; probably shifty-eyed loners that barely leave the basement. Their brand of strictly personal suburban ooze was borne deep within the recesses of New Jersey, just east of I-95. More specifically, this music springs from inside that unspeakable zone deep within the mind where feelings get very messy. David Sutton and Daniel DiMaggio (HOME BLITZ), the duo known as Car Commercials, make mysterious fake rock clatter for heavy petting (yeah right). Following a brief stint as GT Performers, Daniel and David began to make duo recordings as Car Commercials a few years ago, releasing their creepy missives in small runs, mostly for Suttons Leaf Leaf label. The two have tapped into an aspect of nonsensical nihilism that makes Jad Fairs early recordings so alluring, but have forgone his obsession with cartoon horror and monster movies in favor of Faces of Death I thru VI. Erics Diary is the second LP release from Car Commericals, following the out-of-print Judys Dust LP (Cenotaph) from early 2008. Those confounded by Judys Dust will be pleased to know that Erics Diary is where things get...intense. Breathe deep, and prepare to scratch yr head faster than you can say Home Blitz. LP edition of 200 with full color paste-on sleeves." -Soft Abuse. Late 2008 release.

Artist: CAR COMMERCIALS
Title: Prisoner of Type
Format: 7"
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $7.00
"CAR COMMERCIALS explore the personal / loner side of DIY with their singular take on no-chord strum & mumble rock n roll alienation. DAVE SUTTON (CURRENT AMNESIA) & DANIEL DIMAGGIO (HOME BLITZ) have created another soundtrack of suburban boredom and terminal paranoia; the stifling, mundane source of this music (geographically and psychologically speaking) is mirrored and regurgitated in these tunes. Where once they tread a formless, lurching path, Car Commercials now tromp along with more cohesive abandon. Moments of spontaneity and pure attitude are delivered in restrained spurts and jabs, and their chops seem better, too. All in all, Prisoner of Type extends the duos unsettling qmoves into (slightly) less rudimentary corners. Its a savory listen. Hand printed b&w sleeves by ZAK SALLY (LOW) in Minneapolis. Limited edition of 300 copies." -Soft Abuse

Artist: DEADNOTES
Title: Orange Trumpet
Format: LP
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"What attracted me to this band on first sight ⿿ trained in the ⿿school of error⿝ as practised by Maher Shalal Hash Baz and all those other naive orchestral delights, accomplished keyboards man Leighton Craig of the firm belief that where drummers went wrong was when they first started crossing their arms over ⿿ is what still attracts me to them: belief, brevity, melody, resonance, a fondness (acquired from having lived through it) for the early 80s post-Go-Betweens/early Fall mannerisms of derelict Brisbane nightclubs. Stuart Busby not only wields a trumpet like Brightons own Alistair Strachan (Hamilton Yarns, Crayola Lectern) but understands the absolute necessity of controlling (or not controlling) the sound. Guitarist/drummer Eugene Carchesio ⿿ an accomplished, exhibited visual artist in his own right ⿿ much favours the ⿿play once, move on⿝ approach to creating and inventing new songs that cant help attract simple me. One of Eugenes favourite musicians is Jad Fair. How can I argue with that? Im reminded of Monks, Moondog, 4 Gods, Flipper. Too often noise musicians deliberately eschew melody ⿿ as if to admit for a fondness for such is a weakness. The Deadnotes are as unreconstructed and wilfully abstract as the most experimental among us, but at the heart of the music is (usually) a melody, a structure, a beating heart." - Everett True

Artist: DESTROYER
Title: Notorious Lightning And Other Works
Format: LP
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $11.00
"Under pressure to finally do a proper tour, (Daniel) Bejar turned to Victoria band Frog Eyes to back him up and breathe new life into his songs - which they did, and then some. In some cases, they wrestled them right to the ground, giving Bejar a solid kick in the ass, which is exactly what he was looking for. It was a classic Destroyer move: Bejar swore off rock music after perfecting it, then made a faux-orchestral album, then toured it with a band that made it sound like arty hardcore." -CBC Radio. "Six songs from Bejars excellent Your Blues record, retooled & amped-up, with wings sewn on by Victorias amazing Frog Eyes." - Soft Abuse.

Artist: FLYING CANYON
Title: Flying Canyon
Format: CD
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $12.00
"Soaring like The Eagles on Robitussin, Flying Canyons mournful California folk-rock slowly ascends into the desert sky. Imagine the distant moan of a melted CSN&Y cassette floating up from a boombox deep in a ravine while crows pick at a corpse on the mesa. Existing in the sun-baked tradition of burnt-out Cosmic Californians like Sky Sunlight Saxon, Skip Spence, David Crosby and Phil Perlman, frontman Cayce Lindner is tapping a rich vein of indigenous folk, rock & country. Much like their forefathers, Flying Canyon are not traditionalists. With organ, fuzz bass, cathedral harmonies & cavernous drums, the band slows the pace to a funeral crawl.  An apocalyptic and almost religious feeling emanates from this music, while Lindner, with quavering vocals of the Young/Garcia axis and a sensitive masculinity akin to Kristofferson, delivers his high desert eulogies; mournful tales of eternal love and despair. Backing Lindner in Flying Canyon are Shayde Sartin (Kelley Stoltz, The Skygreen Leopards, Giant Skyflower Band, etc) and Jewelled Antlers Glenn Donaldson (The Skygreen Leopards, Thuja, Giant Skyflower Band, The Franciscan Hobbies, etc). Donaldson recorded Flying Canyon on a crumbling reel-to-reel tape machine at his home in San Franciscos famed Mission District, mere blocks from where Sir Douglas Quintet recorded their classic Together After Five LP." - Soft Abuse.

Artist: GIANT SKYFLOWER BAND
Title: Blood of the Sunworm
Format: CD
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $13.50
"During a sabbatical from regular duties in THE SKYGREEN LEOPARDS, GLENN DONADLSON (never one to rest) dreamt of GIANT SKYFLOWER BAND, an exotic, flowery and crumbling new recording project with nods to fruity new age, psych, prog, folk, and pop songwriting. Donaldson quickly invited multi-instrumentalist SHAYDE SARTIN "smoke marijuana & make up strange pop songs," and thus the band was born. With Gongs seminal "Magick Brother" as a starting point and a sitar close at hand, the duo created a dark, peregrine pop transmission from their shoddy analog recording studio in San Francisco. The duos debut offering examines in detail the idiom of Bummer Psych; the strain of damaged Anglo-pop music pioneered by Syd Barrett that arguably reached its apex with The Television Personalities Painted Word LP in the mid-80s." - Soft Abuse.

Artist: HALA STRANA
Title: These Villages
Format: CD
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $12.00
"Three albums in, Steven R. Smiths new Hala Strana project has delivered its first masterpiece. Following his first two full-lengths from last year (Hala Strana on Emperor Jones and Fielding on Jewelled Antler) comes These Villages, a further culmination of Smiths interest in Eastern European folk music. Smiths original compositions are peppered with interpretations of traditional songs, presenting the collision of his musical interests throughout his rather prolific career over the past decade. Built upon layers of sustained drone & delicately plucked and bowed strings, These Villages creates a seemless, almost raga-like environment, with quiet-loud dynamics aplenty. Its a dark record, a definite work of beauty, and a perfect soundtrack for autumns changing leaves and howling winds." - Soft Abuse.

Artist: HORRID RED
Title: Pink Flowers
Format: 7"
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $9.00
"HORRID RED is an offshoot of ex-Siltbreeze creeps TEENAGE PANZERKORPS (DER TPK). While DER TPK stirs a blown-out post-punk frenzy, Horrid Red takes a slightly more delicate approach. Pink Flowers EP is far more pop oriented, though in the way Cans Future Days or mid 80s Fall records are pop. German-born vocalist BUNKER WOLF remains as disturbing as ever and almost more bizarre when set against these melodic guitars ad synth- drenched propulsive rhythms. Vinyl version includes digital download coupon with extra tracks. Edition of 300 copies." -Soft Abuse

Artist: IT HURTS
Title: 33 Tears/Earth Sun Moon Us
Format: 7"
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $9.00
"Auckland, NZs own IT HURTS follow two limited edition cassettes with their debut 7" on Soft Abuse. These two songs offer a beautiful summation of the crude ooze theyve issued so far in one easily digestible dose. Imagine "Indian War Whoop" played by Heathen-era Earth, or Throbbing Gristle with a heavy emphasis on fuzzed blues histrionics." -Soft Abuse.

Artist: LYNCH, JULIAN
Title: Music For How Mata Hari Lost Her Head And Found Her Body
Format: 7"
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $9.00
"Filmmaker Amy Ruhl was beginning work on her first film, an allegorical biography of the courtesan, dancer and spy Mata Hari. Spurred from talks about a using gamelan to score the film, Ruhl asked Julian Lynch to contribute songs to the film & he delivered five new instrumentals. Drawing on both Indonesian music and his own bedroom psychedelia proclivities and casually evoking 1970s Pharaoh Sanders, Lynchs songs came to anchor key scenes in the film. Vinyl includes gratis download." -Soft Abuse.

Artist: MAD NANNA
Title: I Wanna See You/The Nectarine Tree
Format: 7"
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $9.00
"Side A ("I Wanna See You") is an unexpected flash and great kick, a churning anthem of desperation (is it love or lust?) that plunges and jaunts in a brief moment before excusing itself completely. Side B ("The Nectarine Tree") is a wayward / zoned / honest basement transmission that roams around in a purely human way, pummeling everything else near the margins. MAD NANNA is not a put-on. See them in your town, shower them with adoration and cash, and why not go ahead and buy this dandy single while youre at it." -Soft Abuse.

Artist: MYRRH
Title: Myrrh
Format: LP
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Sub-underground duo MYRRH have been dealing their own sort of scuzzed doom for a few years, calmly inducing heavy feedback & thud beatitudes armed only with drums and viola. Comparisons to Skullflower and Earth are warranted here, but with nary a puff of derivative smoke. Comprised of JACKIE BECKEY (BRUTE HEART) and ANIDE MAZOROL (MOTHER OF FIRE), Myrrh construct paeans around not only riffs and feedback, but with great attention to atmosphere. Vinyl-only release limited to 350 copies with free download." - Soft Abuse

Artist: OLYMPUS
Title: Bold Mould
Format: LP
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"OLYMPUS is the banner under which STEFAN NEVILLE (PUMICE) and KRAUS (ex-FUTURIANS, THE AESTHETICS) clang, pound, and in general, collaborate. The obscure and legendary NZ duo surfs along a warbled, technicolor path lined with basement kraut grooves, blasted tape manipulation, fuzzed-out electro-bleats, explosive drumming, minimal synth dervishes and melancholy pop tunes. Includes a download." - Soft Abuse

Artist: PIGEONS
Title: Liasons
Format: CD
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"Bronx duo Pigeons wade closer to the edge of ambitious pop provocations with their third LP, Liasons. Here we find the band in the midst of an enormous creative leap; the psychedelic chanson moves of previous releases now cohabit with spacious west coast artblues & wistful cosmic folk tunes, invoking Catherine Ribeiro, Brigitte Fontaine, & Opal. Pigeons singular approach to structure, arrangements & production techniques -- mirrored by the willful license in spelling Liasons -- culminate with Wednesday Knudsen & Clark Griffin lacing their songs with flute, saxophone, echo, drum machines & languid guitar lines. Includes two songs in French, one of which is a take on Laisse Tomber les Filles by Serge Gainsbourg." -Soft Abuse

Artist: PIGEONS
Title: Lunettes
Format: 7"
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $6.00
"Pigeons make sublimely blasted / incredibly hallucinogenic songs from their base up in Bronx, NY. The trio of Wednesday Knudsen (in disguise on the sleeve), Clark Griffin and Carter Thornton have been active for a few years, releasing miniture-run cassettes and lathe cuts for Griffins sub-underground Moran Tape Label that dealt in skronk, warp & mystery. Their wayward song-based creations are just as ambitious, melding dissonance, crude electronics & chanson pop . The pop element in their tunes, fully introduced on their brilliant Virgin Spectacle LP, firmly rests as the oddest element in the mix. Its true - connections to the No Neck / Sound @ 1 crew & The Sea Donkeys exist, but Pigeons are wholly on their own plane. Lunettes, their first release since Virgin Spectacle, features four new song creations, arrives in lieu of their forthcoming LP Si Faustine (to be released by Black Dirt), and provides a notion of what theyre moving towards." -Soft Abuse

Artist: PIGEONS
Title: They Sweethearstammers
Format: LP
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
"Pigeons have shifted into more dense, heady modes for their new record, They Sweetheartstammers. Heavy doses of melody and dissonance dip into Broadcast & Meddle-era Pink Floyd territory, as well as more straightforward nods to Opals Happy Nightmare Baby, Galaxie 500 and Brigitte Fontaine. Pigeons are also now a four piece featuring Jason Meagher (No Neck Blues Band) on bass and Nathan Bowles (Black Twig Pickers, Pelt) on drums." -Soft Abuse

Artist: PIGEONS
Title: Visions Of The Valley
Format: 7"
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $11.00
"Limited edition of 200!! This 2 song platter find Pigeons pushing farther into tripped out pop songwriting, narrowly clinging to their inner art rock leanings. Dusty, west coast, flowery psyche pop & placid, melancholy blues mysticism fill these grooves. Recorded by Clark & Wednesday in the Bronx & Paris & comes in a hand printed sleeve." -Soft Abuse

Artist: PRIMITIVE MOTION
Title: Certain Materials
Format: 7"
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $9.00
"Debut release from this Australian modern primitive duo. With lyrics cut from dated astronomy texts and ping pong vocal rounds soaked in reverb, PRIMITIVE MOTION create their own brand of spontaneous, steam-driven electronic pop. Their moves recall Joe Jones repetitive readymades, and Joe Meeks "I Hear a New World." Following their work on a sound piece for a gallery opening in Sydney, LEIGHTON CRAIG and visual artist & musician SANDRA SELIG started recording as Primitive Motion. The duo are also part of THE DEADNOTES, a shambling art-punk group that often collaborate with The Legend! (AKA Everett True)." -Soft Abuse

Artist: PUMICE
Title: Pebbles
Format: LP
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Remastered vinyl reissue in limited edition of 300 includes gratis download. Pumice excavate the mutant rock of Simply Saucer and the idiosyncratic, rhythmic compositions of Moondog (at his most playfully abstract), and re-contextualizes those touchstones via the pages of a mid-70s Incredible Hulk comic book. Featuring some of Pumices best makeshift pop songs to date, Pebbles even manages a few excellently fractured instrumentals that harkens to The Clean circa Oddities." -Soft Abuse.

Artist: PUMICE
Title: Persevere
Format: 7"
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $6.00
"Its always a struggle. The instruments are wearing out, the guitar gets harder and harder to tune, the tape loops get sicker and the batteries get flatter, but Pumice perseveres." - Stefan Neville. "Following a mammoth tour of Europe, Japan & the US in 2007-2008, Stefan Geoffrey Neville took a sabbatical from Pumice. After a silence of several months, Stefan slowly began to re-emerge in New Zealand, playing (the drums) with a few bands in Auckland. Slowly, a few proper Pumice gigs were played & soon thereafter, in January 2009, Neville started work on a new batch of recordings. One of those found a home on the split single with Grouper, while the others, appear on Persevere; a befitting title for Nevilles first new grip of songs following his hiatus. Three songs comprise Persevere: The Dawn Chorus of Kina, an ode to (alleged) singing sea urchin, and covers from two vision-sharing kindred spirits: The Axemen (Pacific Ocean) and Michael Hurley (Open Up). Persevere is released in an edition of 500 copies, housed in textured paper sleeves adorned with Nevilles signature dog drawings." - Soft Abuse.

Artist: PUMICE
Title: Yeahnahvienna
Format: CD
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $12.00
"With songs nestled halfway between Xpressways searing static and Flying Nuns dark jangle, Pumices Stefan Neville has quietly created a unique brand of fractured pop since 1991. Despite (or because of) his activity in New Zealands cassette underground for the past 15 years, Neville has only recently begun to crawl into the consciousness of outsider music fans. Yeahnahvienna was conceived and recorded during an artist residency in Vienna in 2004. Nevilles precariously arranged arsenal of cassettes, chord organ, vocals, drums and guitar has yielded a fragile and fractured masterwork. A stark and melancholic affair, calling to mind Alastair Galbraith, Sun City Girls and Supreme Dicks. Through Nevilles layers of hiss and murk lie beautifully stirring & shambolic downer hymns." - Soft Abuse.

Artist: SKYGREEN LEOPARDS, THE
Title: One Thosand Bird Ceremony
Format: CD
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $12.00
"The Skygreen Leopards are easily the most structured of any band in the Jewelled Antler stable of projects, which is not to say that improvisation figures heavily to their sound (oh, it does). What you get are loosely-structured psychedelic folk songs arranged with banjos, bouzoukis, 12 string guitars, tape loops, Hammond organ, and a host of other instruments. One Thousand Bird Ceremony is easily their most accomplished and fully realized album yet, and its the perfect soundtrack for the summertime. The Skygreen Leopards are Glenn Donaldson (Thuja, The Birdtree, The Blithe Sons, The Franciscan Hobbies) and Donovan Quinn (Verdure)." - Soft Abuse.

Artist: SONNY & THE SUNSETS
Title: Tomorrow Is Alright
Format: LP
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"These busted beach-pop songs spark recollections of doo wops otherworldly despair, the kitchen sink savoir fair of the Raincoats and the positive possibilities exuded by Jonathan Richman. THE SUNSETS have featured a revolving door lineup that has included KELLEY STOLTZ and JOHN DWYER, but now features players from CITAY, FRESH & ONLYS and SKYGREEN LEOPARDS in its ranks." -Soft Abuse

Artist: TILTH
Title: Angular Music
Format: LP
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $17.00
"Through seven meditative pieces, the duo of NATHAN MCLAUGHLIN (tapes, etc.) and CODY YANTIS (guitar, etc.) take a trip into fatigue, informed first-hand by the conditions from the which this music springs. Angular Music is inspired and provoked by Bill Dixons idea of going to the center, and is one of the most engaging concrete works to emerge in years. Limited edition of 100 copies in hand-printed sleeves." -Soft Abuse.

Artist: ULAAN KHOL
Title: I
Format: CD
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"Steven R. Smith has had a hand in creating some of the most compelling & singular instrumental psychedelic music of the past ten years. As Ulaan Khol, Smith digs in deep with a palette of drums/guitar/organ to craft a monolithic & expansive freeform, feedback-heavy atmospheric din that bonds the disparate realms of Fushitsusha & High Rise with Popul Vuh & Flying Saucer Attack. Smith has planned a maximalist three-part suite, Ceremony. In this first installment of the trilogy, the tone is overwhelmingly bleak as the pieces (all untitled) caterwaul, moan & crumble."-Soft Abuse

Artist: ULAAN KHOL
Title: III
Format: CD
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"III is as immediate as a truck with failed brakes crashing through your living room wall. The third and final installment of a trilogy entitled Ceremony, its opening moments rage and wail, with distorted guitars pulling out in front of the drums like hellhounds that have slipped their masters leash. But this isnt a mono-dimensional freak-out. Smith paces himself, pulling back into brooding drones and pensive picking before lashing out once more. As befits a journey thats taken three discs to unfold, it ends with a grand gesture; the final melody is as epic as Roy Montgomerys mid-90s work, and it unfurls over a landscape of blasted wah-wah licks & feedback that somehow reconcile The Stooges and Popul Vuh." - Signal To Noise.

Artist: WOODEN WAND
Title: Harem Of The Sundrum & The Witness Figg
Format: CD
Label: Soft Abuse
Country: USA
Price: $12.00
"Wooden Wands first album as a solo artist (he regularly records and tours with bongtastic loft-psych champions The Vanishing Voice) is influenced in equal parts by legendary hedonists Fleetwood Mac and West Coast sad sac Judee Sill. The intention to create something timeless and ageless informs each note of the music, for better or worse. For those of you subscribing to the art as immortality school of thought, consider this Wooden Wands first mark, his initial score against the reaper." - Soft Abuse.
