Artist: BROOM DUSTERS
Title: Sound From The Bottom Of The Tokyo Underground - Live 1998
Format: LP
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
"New album of archive in-the-red live recordings by the Broom Dusters, a Tokyo outfit led by Masami Kawaguchi in the late 1990s. The trios sound was a jagged, lurching hybrid of amped up psych and garage blues topped off with Kawaguchis distinctive vocal moan. Kawaguchi was at the time a member of Keiji Hainos Aihiyo and went on to found Miminokoto and New Rock Syndicate. He also currently does duties as second guitarist in LSD-March. The collection of live material on this LP was recorded in 1998 and mastered by Soichiro Nakamura (White Heaven, Stars etc.) at Peace music studio. This LP only release comes in handsome gold/black screenprinted packaging and is numbered and limited to 315 with no plans for a CD version." - SIWA.

Artist: EXIAS-J & SABU TOYOZUMI
Title: Sons Scapegoat
Format: CD
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $13.50
"A March 2005 meeting of EXIAS-J (EXPERIMENTAL IMPROVISERS ASSOCIATION OF JAPAN) and drummer SABU TOYOZUMI. Since the late 90s EXIAS-J have been conjoining the worlds of free music and modern composition by employing free improvisation in variously structured approaches ranging from jazz and rock rooted forms to avant-classical and performance art settings. Sabu Toyozumi is a true giant of Japanese free music with a history running from his involvement with Masayuki Takayanagis New Direction Unit in the late 60s through his work with Kaoru Abe , Peter Brötzmann, Takashi Mizutani (Rallizes Denudes), Keiji Haino and a veritable whos who of internationally known improvisers. There is a sonic clarity to this new studio recording that might help elucidate the underlying musical structure on the two previous live Electric Conception recordings (available on PSF). That said, with one stated goal being the disruption of the hierarchies of instrumentation through the application of electro-acoustics this frequently creates a dense, shifting sonic mass that should make even ardent noise fans feel quite at home. Edition of 500 copies packaged in screen printed gatefold covers." - SIWA.

Artist: IST
Title: Anagrams To Avoid
Format: LP
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
IST = Simon H Fell, Mark Wastell, and Rhodri Davies. Studio recordings from 1995 of duo and trio improvisations for bass, cello and harp. "Extremely right second release from this label. The tonal agility on display is at once highly agile and responsive and carefully considered, all three participants adopting an eagerly intelligent but refreshingly unassuming approach to their chosen strand of improvisational sound. Fell & co rework established conventions, revealing unsuspected elasticities, twisting and contorting them into new shapes. Comes in a rather gorgeous silkscreened cover to boot." - Nick Cain, Opprobrium.

Artist: KANEKO, JUTOK & TAKAHISA KIKUKAWA
Title: Wedged Night
Format: LP
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
"October 2002 recording of improvisations and songs by Jutok Kaneko (guitar) and Takahisa Kikukawa (drums). Kaneko should be familiar to some as the man behind the heavy psychedelia of Kousokuya (whose much sought after debut LP from 1989 has finally resurfaced on PSF). Kikukawas name on the other hand will likely not ring too many bells outside of his home country but he did supply some sublimely spaced drumming to the dreamy Che-Shizu for a while and he plays percussion and piano in UZU. Both in Kousokuya and in Kanekos solo work the line between composition and improvisation is a very blurry one so its only in the loosest of terms that we say side one of this album is an "improvisation" and side two consists of a couple of "songs". The LP comes in an appropriately black and black on black silkscreened cover with two screened inserts." - Siwa.

Artist: KUDO, REIKO & TORI
Title: Light
Format: CD
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"The CD is an edition of 500 housed in a hand assembled screen printed slipcase with 8 card inserts. Includes lyrics in Japanese and English. Artwork by Namio Kudo. Light was recorded live in 2005 and 2006 and features duo versions of tracks from the last three self released Reiko Kudo albums along with two previously unrecorded songs. Forgoing the big band explorations of Maher Shalal Hash Baz here Tori and Reiko offer an intimate live set of Reikos heartbreakingly beautiful songs of loss and longing." - Siwa.

Artist: KUDO, TORI/LA CONSUMPTION 4
Title: Atlantic City
Format: LP
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $16.50
"Archive LP of material recorded by Tori Kudo and some fellow travellers during a stay in New York in the Summer of 1981. Originally released on cassette the approach on these recordings was a long way from the eerie organ driven Noise Tenno LP that Tori and Reiko released a year earlier. About half of Atlantic City consists of songs, teeth bared and falling apart as they come together but still in a style similar to Toris subsequent work with Maher Shalal Hash Baz. The other half is made up mostly of extended guitar jams rooted equally in rock and blues but retaining Toris rather unique take on the idioms. Screenprinted cover and insert art adapted from drawings and photos taken in NY and Atlantic City in 1981." - Siwa.

Artist: LSD MARCH
Title: Shindara Jigoku
Format: LP
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Shindara Jigoku is the fourth LP from Shinsuke Michishitas LSD-March. A slightly more contemplative affair than the blow to the senses that was their recent LP on HP Cycle. The line-up on this is once again Michishita (guitar, vocals) with Masami Kawaguchi (guitar) and Ikuro Takahashi (drums)." Small repress in black jackets.

Artist: MIKAMI, KAN
Title: Nishiogi No Tsuki
Format: LP
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $22.00

2009 release, out of print. "New solo studio recording by Japans reigning surrealist blues poet. Forty plus minutes of all new material recorded in France during Mikamis 2008 European tour. Numbered heavy weight vinyl only edition of 333 in handpulled screen printed sleeves. Includes lyrics in Japanese and English (title track alone is a trip through painted omelets and the moon to a rusty French bicycle). While Mikami is building up a massive body of work through his long running association with PSF records this is the first of his studio dates to be committed to vinyl in decades. Singular and essential." -Siwa.

Artist: MIMINOKOTO
Title: 3
Format: LP
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Third studio LP from the Tokyo avant-garage trio Miminokoto comprised of Masami Kawaguchi (Broomdusters, LSD March, Aihiyo), Koji Shimura (White Heaven, High Rise) and Takuya Nishimura (Che-Shizu). Small vinyl only edition in a hand-screened cover with space heater." - Siwa.

Artist: MUKAI, CHIE
Title: Solo Improvisations
Format: CD
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $13.00
"CD reissue of Chie Mukais second solo album originally released on LP in 2000. Three tracks recorded at Kid Ailack Art Hall in Tokyo in the late 90s. Just over 40 minutes of solo improvisations featuring the beautiful deep drone of the er-hu (a traditional bowed Chinese instrument) augmented by voice, kengali, rings and cymbals. Mukai is an important (and underdocumented) figure in the Japanese underground whose work goes back to her time as a student under Takahisa Kosugi in the late 70s which resulted in her participation in the legendary "East Bionic Symphonia" album. Since then she has continued to work with her own Ché-SHIZU outfit and appear on recordings with artists such as Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Rinji Fukuoka (Overhang Party), Seiichi Yamamoto (Boredoms) and Masayoshi Urabe. This CD is housed in a screenprinted gatefold chipboard sleeve and is released in an edition of 600." - Siwa.

Artist: NMPERIGN
Title: We Devote Every Effort To Offer You The Best That You Deserve To Have For Your Enjoyment
Format: Double LP
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $24.00
"Nmperign is Greg Kelley and Bhob Rainey. The first LP of this 2LP set consists of the title track which was recorded in Mhere, France. The music on the second LP is from a performance at Wesleyan University and is entitled "I Am Sitting In A Fucking Room". Instrument credits are given as "marantz pmd 130, sony micro20002, horns". In the past Nmperign has collaborated with Le Quan Ninh, GŸnter MŸller, Jason Lescalleet, Jerome Noetinger, Lionel Marchetti, Axel Dšrner and many others. Their previous recordings have appeared on labels such as Selektion, Rossbin, Twisted Village and Intransitive. We hope these facts (almost all of them verifiable) will arouse some interest on your part because we have no intention of risking insulting what these gentlemen do with even one avant-speak cliche. Youre on your own pal. Limited vinyl only edition with 5 color screenprinted cover." - Siwa. Yet another amazing presentation from Siwa.

Artist: ORIMO, SABU
Title: Wind Songs
Format: LP
Label: Siwa
Country: Japan
Price: $20.00
"Following a number of small run releases (and an appearance on a recent volume of PSF s Tokyo Flashback series) heres a vinyl only set of Sabu Orimos solo shakuhachi work. Recorded by Orimo in 2007-2008 and played on unlacquered natural bamboo flutes. With an approach to his instrument described as "Japanese old stone age style" (or the somewhat misleading term noise shakuhachi) Orimo might be said to be working on the fringes (of the fringes) of Japans broadly defined psychedelic scene. That said one could ask if Siwas motives here might not just be a case of trying to peddle the hated music behind a veil of blatant exoticism. Yes that does mean that after a number of rock/folk moves were dishing up some more exquisite improv. And you deserve it. Heavy weight vinyl only edition of 299 in five color handpulled screen printed sleeves." - Siwa.

Artist: SEISHOKKI
Title: 1975-1977
Format: LP
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"Seishokki (roughly translates as Organs Of Blue Eclipse) was an outfit formed while its members were still in high school and active from 1975-1977 in Asahikawa in northern Japan. The onset of punk may have validated these six non-musicians decision to start a band but original member Ikuro Takahashi (who went on to perform with a veritable whos who list of outfits including Fushitsusha, High Rise, Che-Shizu and Maher Shalal Hash Baz) has suggested that a lot of their inspiration came from what was probably a misreading of early minimalism. With their musical influences as likely to be only heard of as actually heard what comes out in these recordings is a wonderfully primitive approach to the repetition of minimalism with exuberant forays into wild synth/percussion driven noise. The result is a sound that falls somewhere between the original Amon Duul LPs and Outside the Dream Syndicate with a nod towards the subsequent development of noise as a genre in the Japanese underground. These are believed to be the only surviving recordings of this band with the exception of a vocal track with lyrics concerning an eternal teenage concern deemed too mortifying for release. Limited vinyl only edition in lurid 5 color screenprinted jacket." - SIWA. Included in Julian Copes Top 50 Japanese Underground LPs of all time in the recently published JAPROCKSAMPLER book.

Artist: TAKAHASHI, IKURO
Title: Anoyo No Dekigoto
Format: LP
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $26.00
"Anoyo No Dekigoto is a duo performance unit, consisting of dance by Yoko Muronoi and music by Ikuro Takahashi. The project has existed for four or five years, but this is their first release with any substantial physical footprint on this corporeal plane. Takahashi has a lengthy history in the Japanese rock underground, dating back to his involvement with no-wavers Akebonoizu during the late seventies and early eighties. Since then he has been the drummer of choice for virtually everyone whos anyone on the scene. High Rise, Fushitsusha, Tamio Shiraishi, Kosokuya, ChŽ-SHIZU, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, and Nagisa Ni Te amongst others have all benefited from his propulsive, dynamic mastery of space. Solo, duo and more expansive projects under a variety of names including Aura Nihilitica, Lamones Young, and Of Dogstarman have revealed a hitherto unsuspected facility for environment-altering improvised drone and electronic drift. Muronoi too has a long CV of experimental dance work behind her, ranging from solo butoh pieces to multi-media collaborations with visual artists, filmmakers and musicians. The name Anoyo no dekigoto means something like Happenings in the Other World, an entirely appropriate moniker for the indeterminate, non-linear and metaphysical nature of the communication between Muronoi and Takahashi during their improvised performances. The music is not simply a background score for the dancers movements. Takahashi even shies away from the description of what they do as communication. Rather, he refers to a complex series of negotiations between dancer, musician, environment, and audience that serve to create a sense of enveloping, trembling communal space. On these recordings, Takahashi takes his interest in electronics to another level. On one track he deploys over thirty tiny oscillators to create a constantly moving, deeply immersive field of higher-function insect chatter. Even without Muronois wraith-like physical presence, the music on this album exerts an eerie and oblique dominance over any room in which it is played. It subtly modifies the listeners perception of time and space, leaving behind a tangible and mournful reminder of its presence, like the luminescent tracks of some passing phantom slowly decaying back into incorporeality." -Alan Cummings. Edition of 300 in yet another incredible silkscreened jacket!

Artist: TAKAHASHI, IKURO
Title: Domori to Sanshu
Format: CD
Label: Siwa
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"Ikuro Takahashi might be a familiar name to some for his role as drummer/percussionist with many of the most notable Japanese underground acts of the past 25 years (High Rise, Kosokuya, Fushitsusha, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, LSD March to name but a few). On Domori to Sanshu he presents another look into his long running work with electronics. The two tracks on the CD consist of a live performance for oscillators and percussion followed by a computer composition in which Takahashi uses techniques of layering, looping and stretching sources to create immersive fields of sound. The live piece adds some space defining percussion for a brief temporal anchor before enveloping you once again in the high end chatter of up to 100 tiny oscillators. The computer piece by contrast offers no such reference points, instead leaving the listener submerged in a low end organic rumble that manages by turns to be both soothing and disorienting. The first edition of this CD is limited to 250 copies and comes in a painted and screenprinted wooden slipcase with screenprinted inner sleeve." - Siwa.
