Artist: GEORGIA
Title: All Kind Music
Format: LP
Label: Palto Flats
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
“On All Kind Music, NYC production duo Georgia (Brian Close and Justin Tripp) return for their third full length: ECM-era Don Cherry global jazz meets contemporary electronic avant-garde, true world dance music for the next millennium.
With guest turns on every track, Georgia explore a new approach to studio production, incorporating the sounds of world and jazz music into their digital funk and combining and processing improvisation and composed elements to create a unified, distinct voice. This approach can be heard on “Ama Yes Uzume,” as a primally incandescent vocal from Caroline Polachek (Chairlift) blends with glistening waves of piano and synth to form a euphoric rhythm that materializes out of curved air. Blending live performance with sampling and editing, Georgia constantly revise and revisit their work, breaking down, collaging, and refracting sounds.
On lead track “Slow Dance,” vocals by performance artist India Menuez waft over a loping bass line (sampled from a performance by Matt Werth of RVNG) while digital flutes cluster in the background. The outcome is a kind of new age mutant funk, not unlike the sound of Annette Peacock or 23 Skidoo jamming in the studio with Jon Hassell. Additional collaborators include avant-garde harpist Mary Lattimore, saxophonist Wednesday Knudsen, and Gabonese vocalist Abang Essone Sarah Maya. As the title suggests, this is music of many multitudes.” - Palto Flats.

Artist: KRAUS
Title: Sherry
Format: 7"
Label: Palto Flats
Country: USA
Price: $6.00
"Following a much-loved full-length, New Zealander Kraus (Klaus, drummer of Futurians, member of Olympus with Stefan Neville) really brings the goods on this four-song outing of pure Martian stomp. Analog synths, gritty low-end rhythm tracks, tangled/stumbled guitar melodies and above all DETERMINATION to get something done really push this one along in a way that the Kraus LP really didnt (or didnt need to, as these recordings may predate that work). These songs sound like progress, and its a doubly amazing feat as there arent really songs here; more like a bunch of low-tech machines set forth to follow a complex pattern, and listening to them complete it over and over is fascinating enough. Its like having a half-mile of slot car track, infinite terrain options, and the will to build something huge to scale. Also reminds me of those film clips of “The Worlds Biggest Domino Rally” that would get shows at the back end of local news or human interest shows on TV back in the 80s, where a bunch of dudes in a big room set off a huge chain reaction, patterns, etc. Really dig this one a lot."-Still Single/Doug Mosurock

Artist: MARIAH
Title: Utakata No Hibi
Format: Double 12"
Label: Palto Flats
Country: USA
Price: $24.00
“Palto Flats is thrilled to announce the re-release of the 1983 classic Mariah – Utakata No Hibi as a double 12″ set. The long sought after final record on the legendary Better Days label, Utakata No Hibi is the culmination of composer and bandleader Yasuaki Shimizu’s early-80s work, often compared to his contemporaries Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono, as well as experimental new wavers Flying Lizards/David Cunningham, all of whom Shimizu has worked with. Recognized in Japan for the hit, “Shinzo No Tobira,” the entire record is a masterful studio production of Japanese folk and pop idioms filtered through a chamber disco, new wave, synth production, sounding more relevant today than upon its release over 30 years ago. Utakata No Hibi is fully licensed by Nippon Columbia and the Artist, and remastered by Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin. The packaging features additional artwork from Yla Okudaira, who created the original stunning jacket drawings. It also includes a full English translation of the Japanese and Armenian lyrics on the printed inner sleeves.” - Palto Flats.

Artist: YOUNG, ROLAND P.
Title: Hearsay I-Land
Format: LP
Label: Palto Flats
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"Palto Flats is pleased to release an overview of the mid-80s works of Roland Young, perhaps best known for his spiritual jazz record, Isophonic Boogie Woogie. This release comprises the entirety of his 1984 four song 12”, I-LAND, as well as most of his 1987 LP, Hearsay Evidence, both released on his label, Flow- Chart Records. This release presents a different side to Rolands story, and features both vocal and writing contributions from his wife Risa. On Ballo-Balla, Risa sings over a simple and spacey 808 rhythm and bass sequence, in a track worthy of later Larry Levan and Paradise Garage. On other tracks, Roland sings in a higher pitched, soulful voice over similarly rudimentary analog sequences, to create a relaxed atmosphere, with lyrical content touching upon love, social commentary, emotions, and more, all in a deeply personal way. The tracks from both releases have been remastered from the original master tapes and pristine vinyl, and were sequenced in collaboration with the Artist to create a cohesive full length album of his mid 80s works. These songs fit squarely in the mold of Jeff Phelps, Dam Funk and the like, and are meant to be enjoyed both at home and in downtempo DJ sets, and as a historical document and pop record. Rolands other solo released LPs are Isophonic Boogie Woogie (Flow-Chart), Istet Serenade, and Mystiphonic, all on the Japanese label EM Records. He was a principal songwriter in the early 80s no- wave band, The Offs, whose first record featured a Basquiat cover, and had a sound comparable to The Contortions. Roland is a classically trained jazz clarinetist who performed at a young age with Alice Coltrane. He moved to New York City in the early 80s and has continued to make music since, with a diverse and substantive discography of self-released spiritually influenced jazz and new age releases. The artwork for Hearsay I-Land is an original ink drawing by Nathan Antolik, and is based on the original album cover of I-LAND. First run of 500 copies on black vinyl. Download Card included." - Palto Flats.
