Artist: ALLEN, TERRY
Title: Ghost Ship Rodez
Format: CD
Label: Orion Read
Country: USA
Price: $27.00
"In Ghost Ship Rodez Terry Allen pursues a fictional investigation of what may have happened in the mind of French artist, playwright and actor Antonin Artaud during a 17-day journey restrained in the dark hold of the freighter Washington in 1937, and later, in various mental institutions. While living in France, Artaud had obtained a walking stick that he considered was the staff of Jesus Christ handed down to St. George. In 1937, Artaud journeyed to Ireland to return the staff to its country of origin. However, while there, he experienced a series of extreme mental and emotional crises that culminated in a violent altercation with Dublin police. Artaud’s subsequent deportation to France was a grueling journey, which he spent straitjacketed and chained to a metal cot in the bowels of the ship. The live theater piece from which this radio play was adapted, was originally commissioned by and developed at Les Subsistance Artist Atellier Laboratories, Lyon, France and performed there as a work-in- progress, June 2006, at Festival Les Intranquilles. It was further developed and performed at MassMoca, North Adams, MA, Feb. 2008. The completed work premiered at the Lensic Theater of the Performing Arts, Santa Fe, NM, April 2010 in conjunction with Terry Allen’s exhibition Ghost Ship Rodez (The Momo Chronicles) at Site Santa Fe, Feb-May, 2010." - Orion Read

Artist: ALLEN, TERRY
Title: Live at Als Grand Hotel, May 7, 1971
Format: LP
Label: Orion Read
Country: USA
Price: $30.00
"Four years before the release of his celebrated country concept album, Juarez, Terry Allen was invited by his friend Allen Ruppersberg to perform at the opening night of Als Grand Hotel, an installation/exhibition where Ruppersberg converted a two-story craftsman house in Hollywood into a fully functioning hotel with seven themed guest rooms. Terry Allen set up his piano and played all original songs to a familiar and enthusiastic crowd, including early versions of the Juarez series and five songs that remained unreleased until now. Lost for almost 40 years, the original recordings have been restored and released as a new gatefold LP album with photographs documenting the installation and live performance. The record brings together sad songs and mad songs, songs about the past and the uncertain future… live, raw material from the beginning of this great songwriters career." - Orion Read. Edition of 500 copies, from 2011.

Title: Titanic and Other Songs
Format: LP
Label: Orion Read
Country: USA
Price: $27.00
"After reading that Bob Dylan’s forthcoming album, Tempest, will include a 14-minute song about the Titanic, comedian Tim Heidecker set out to record an equally epic song about the ship, to “see if I could beat the master to it.” The rhyming ballad begins in 1912 and ends in the present day with James Cameron’s decision to re-release The Titanic (1997) in 3-D. “I can’t wait to see how close I got to the real thing!” The album also includes a cover of Dylan’s All the Tired Horses (1970), along with previously unreleased songs inspired by: the failed sequel to suburban biker movie, Wild Hogs (2007); life at home; an assignment from a friend; and fear of death and earthquakes. Heidecker (Tom Goes to the Mayor, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Billion Dollar Movie, is also half of the soft rock band, Heidecker and Wood. 2012, edition of 500, vinyl only." - Orion Read

Artist: LEAVITT, WILLIAM
Title: Warp Engines
Format: LP
Label: Orion Read
Country: USA
Price: $24.00
"This soundtrack for William Leavitts sculptural installation Warp Engines (2009) combines cello, played arco and pizzicato, with audio clips from sound effects libraries. As early as 1970, when he created a soundtrack for the installation Forest Sound, Leavitt had the desire to introduce the possibility of mood and atmosphere to the installation with the addition of sound. In the 1980s, he began making electronic music circuits, eventually completing his own analog synthesizer, and more recently hes been making cellos by hand.

Leavitt is an artist, playwright, and musician living in Los Angeles. His artwork was the subject of a recent retrospective titled Theater Objects at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in 2011. He performs and records music for many of his installations and theater pieces, sometimes collaborating with musicians Joseph Hammer and Rick Potts. As a cellist he has played in several Los Angeles groups including Provisional Riviera, Solid Eye, and the Subtones." - Orion Read.

Artist: NICODEMUS
Title: Toxic Crunch
Format: LP
Label: Orion Read
Country: USA
Price: $25.00
"A fitting epitaph for the undisputed master of biker-synth-folk-psych, "Toxic Crunch" is perhaps the definitive Nicodemus LP. Recorded from 1986-1999 with his brother Kid Matchez and released on cassette on his own Zedikiah label in 99, the legendary outlaw biker and cosmonaut Nicodemus is in fine form, with his gravelly pipes rivaling Dr. John and Beefheart on funky fucked odes to livin free, escaping the electric chair and the joys of morning wood. For those unfamiliar, the lore is that Nicodemus got his start as a wee lad doing guitar session-work for Motown. His band Jim Harlem Trio was nearly signed to the label but a manager stole the tapes. Nicodemus became a lone wolf in the late 60s, though riding with the Satans Last Revenge motorcycle club. While self-releasing some 50 LPs, cassettes, 45s, and other genius bits of DIY damaged biker-soul, Nicodemus was shot multiple times, did as many drugs as humanly possible, and had many crashes--breaking nearly every bone in his body. The force of nature known as St. Nic also painted surrealist cosmic scenes under the name Chongo;  released 14 books of poetry, prose, and fiction; and for 11 years studied the healing methods of the Mescalero Apache (he is also known as Whitecrow)-- all while living the life of a true outcast and recording his uncategorizable musical vision of dark swampy blues, motorik grooves, ballsy rawk, synth fuckery, and alchemical folky strains. "Toxic Crunch" is easily his most all-encompassing work, and features original sleeve and label artwork by Chongo and his son, BluRaven. This fully authorized reissue is being released by Orion Read on vinyl LP in August 2013, with quality pressing at RTI and old-style sleeves by Stoughton Printing. Sadly, Nicodemus passed away on March 29th, 2013, but St. Nic and his music will not be forgotten."  -S. Krakow.

Title: Small Town Country, Vol. 1
Format: LP
Label: Orion Read
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
“The songs that make up this unprecedented album were gathered and compiled by Austin based musician and record collector Jason Chronis. He visited countless small towns across Texas and beyond, in search of anything and everything that might be etched on vinyl.
From mountains of material, he chose these fourteen forgotten odes and put them in an order that tells a story. Like Harry Smiths visionary anthology of folk music, this selection of private press country music captures the joys and the sorrows of people who sang for themselves.
These songs speak directly to the concerns of real people, our experiences and dreams, and the gap between them. Of course, these musicians had also hoped to score on the charts, a desire that almost defines country music, but it didnt happen that way. Now, 30, 40, 50 years after these records were handed to friends and mailed to local radio stations, perhaps country music is in for some definition expansion.
More than half of these raw and intimate songs came out of Texas, where there has always been a strong regional music tradition. As history recedes and country music shakes off the commercial dominance of the Nashville hit machine, Texas country music, with its straightforward, “take it or leave it” sentiment and rugged, stripped down sound, will be known for its influence on all types of musicians and songwriters. And perhaps the unknown country musicians that made the music on this LP were right when they pooled resources, asked favors, and poured their hearts out onto 45s…thinking they had a hit on their hands!” - Orion Read.

Artist: WOLF EYES
Title: Slicer
Format: LP
Label: Orion Read
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
“Coming just months after Dread (Wolf Eyes first LP as a trio), Slicer was released on cassette in an edition of 50 in 2001. From start to finish, its a full-fledged sonic experience. Deep stuttering bass, high streams of electronics, rugged tape manipulation, horns, glass - this recording contains an enormous spectrum of sound. Mastering legend John Golden, who cut the lacquer for vinyl, said it was like cutting a sonic obstacle course. That doesnt mean Slicer is a record that youll play once and file away. The Olson, Young, and Dilloway line-up, which lasted just 5 years, shows unusual restraint here. The calm intensity of their wildly bizarre sonic experiments and masterful compositional moves make for a rewarding repeat listen.
With influences coming from all over - avant-garde sound art, industrial music, psychedelic rock - specifically, Slicer brings to mind the perfectly edited Malesch from Agitation Free, the immediacy of SPK, and the innovation of Henning Christiansen. If youve followed their prolific output, you wont be surprised that band practice was also always a recording session, and these guys all had solo projects too - they played all the time. Their ideas developed from jamming, and you can hear the confidence, the control of tone, the patience of the improvisations.
Wolf Eyes were looking for, finding and fleshing out new musical forms. This is deeply ambitious music made without academic pretensions. This record contains some of the most minimal programming in their catalog and the editing and mastering are nothing short of inspired. Setting an impossibly high watermark just as the noise scene was getting on its feet, few, if any, have come close to the energy and power of this recording since.” - Orion Read.
