Artist: AHMED, MAHMOUD Title: Jeguol Naw Betwa Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "Reissue of a 1978 self released LP by one of the greatest Ethiopian vocalists of all time. This material has not been reissued in any form since its original release digitally or analog! Recorded at the end of the golden age of Ethiopian urban music, Mahmoud is in top form belting out transcendent intense vocals over the Ibex Bands hypnotic soulful horns, organs, guitars, bass & percussion. As good as it gets & as close to universally perfect music as ever has been made. Old school thick tip on sleeve. Beautifully remastered by Timothy Stollenwerk." - Mississippi. |
|
Artist: AMANAR Title: Alghafiat Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "Tuareg guitar from Northern Mali by Kidals hometown band. A different side of desert blues with high energy gritty guitar sessions that are popular favorites. Recorded at a local studio in 2008 during the last uprising, the music is very poignant as the North has again fallen into rebellion and the band is scattered in exile. The title translates as Peace. Includes detailed liner notes in Tifinagh. A split release with Sahel Sounds." - Mississippi/Little Axe. |

| "Hypnotic recording session with griot "ALI" AG AMOUNINE at his home in Timbouctou. Artist: ANIMALS & MEN Title: Never Bought Never Sold: Singles + Demos 1979-83 Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $12.00 |
|
"Animals + Men -- named after a song by Adam and the Ants -- started life around the winter of 1978-1979 when Susan Wells took over vocal duties in what was a three piece called Psychotic Reaction. Based in Frome Somerset, their first release Dont Misbehave in the New Age (1980) was an indie hit. When the band split in 81, Susan and Ralph formed the Terraplanes. A & M/Terraplanes released three vinyl 45s. A few years ago, demos by the band surfaced on the Messthetics/Hyped 2 Death label. Recently, the band have reformed and performed the odd gig and are releasing an EP of new songs soon on Convulsive Records. Mississippi Records is proud to be the first to release an entire LP containing the three 45s and early demos, all recorded between 1979-1983. For fans of early UK DIY." -Mississippi

Artist: BARFIELD, CECIL Title: South Georgia Blues Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Recorded by George Mitchell in 1978, this LP was originally released by the Southland label under the name William Robertson. Due to Cecils superstitions and legitimate fears of the taxman, he insisted that it come out under a false name. Cecil was an unusual blues musician, giving each song its own feel and rhythm. Another underrated American original. This is a co-release with Big Legal Mess Records." -Mississippi |
|
Artist: CHALK CIRCLE Title: Reflection Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "Chalk Circle existed in the Washington, DC metro area punk/hardcore scene between 1981 and 1983. They were the first all-female rock or punk band to ever record and perform in DC, their recorded output is finally available on vinyl for the first time. Reflection includes 12 songs from compilations, and live shows, and unreleased recordings and a 16 page booklet with extensive liner notes by Don Fleming. Chalk Circle, although personally part of the birth of hardcore as friends and fans of the Dischord scene, musically never fit in to the stringent rules of that scene. They sound like they were from a time where experimentation was rewarded, where new ideas were examined and transformed by people who were curious and excited to fit with the moment. For those who want a tag, well, think about the post punk of Delta 5, Liliput, The Swell Maps and the Slits. Think about the youthful energy of DC Hardcore and the enthusiasm of teenagers making music that comes from the heart and not from copying riffs from rock records. Co-released by both Mississippi Records and Post Present Medium. Digital download included." -Mississippi |

Artist: CHIN CHIN Title: We Dont Wanna Be Prisoners Format: 7" Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $7.00 |
|
"From Biel Switzerland, comes this little known group. One of the few all-girl bands (along with KLEENEX/LILLIPUT) to come out of the early 80s Swiss punk scene. CHIN CHIN definitely considered themselves a punk band. Although their catchy pop vocals and harmonies strongly aligned them with the burgeoning C86 scene. They shared bills with THE SHOP ASSISTANTS, TELEVISION PERSONALITIES, THE POGUES and NEW MODEL ARMY, before the band drifted into obscurity. This 7" was originally released in 1984 on the bands own, Farmer Records. It contains 3 self-penned songs and marks their first and punkest release. Keep your eyes peeled for their full length LP out soon as a split between the Mississippi and Slumberland labels." - Mississippi.

Artist: COHRAN AND THE ARTISTIC HERITAGE ENSEMBLE, PHILIP Title: Malcolm X Memorial Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $17.00 |
|
"An early member of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Philip Cohran went on to record & self-release this LP in 1968, originally in an edition of 1,000. Cohran was a personal friend of Malcolm X, & this is a concept album musically telling the story of Malcolms political & spiritual journey. It features a tight groove-oriented band (which later evolved into the Pharoahs, & then Earth, Wind, & Fire!) who explore soul, jazz, & Middle Eastern rhythms. A politically radical & intense recording not to be missed. Philip Cohran is a much under-appreciated musical genius, & we are proud to reissue this album for the first time on vinyl. Gatefold LP with archival photos & liner notes." -Mississippi.

Artist: COLEMAN, GEORGE Title: Bongo Joe Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "There can only be one Bongo Joe, and that is the incredible George Coleman. Bongo Joe is perhaps the worlds only virtuoso player of the empty oil drum, a man so ingenious that he could even turn petroleum refuse into something musical and sublime. Recorded on the streets of San Antonio in 1969 by Chris Strachawitz (Arhoolie Records). Bongo Joe drums on his oil cans with a thunderous, tympani-like effect, while discoursing rambling, insightful and hilariously funny lyrics that are often times more stories than songs. As Joe himself put it, I rap but not that bullshit theyre putting down now. I play fundamental beat music. Whether draping his drums with an American flag or washing them in swirls of psychedelic green and red paint, theres something beyond the typical street-corner busker in Bongo Joes persona, unbridled quality that isnt just musical, but draws on a tradition of pure entertainment. One of the true treasures of the Arhoolie catalog for many years. Try Science Fiction, Innocent Little Doggie (if you think Joe was just a novelty act, listen closely to the poignant insightfulness of the lyrics), Transistor Radio (more wry commentary) and Dog Eat Dog. One of our favorites, available on vinyl for the first time in 39 years." -Mississippi |

Artist: COUNT VERTIGO Title: I Am A Mutant Format: 7" Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $7.00 |
|
"Reissued for the first time, a crazed Portland punk record from 1979. A side project of ICE NINE, COUNT VERTIGO only existed for this one record as a band. Side A features "I Am A Mutant"-an uneasy little song with a relentless menacing organ riff. On the flip is "Patriot X"-an angry political song that still rings a little too true. Two heroic punk anthems not to miss, if you like that sort of thing." -Mississippi

Artist: DE KIFT Title: De Kift Format: 7" Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $6.00 |
| "Spunky 1988 release. A fairly unknown predecessor to their debut LP Yverzucht. Impossible to find and never reissued. Three songs of driving rhythms and volatile speech. Another testament to the uniquely prolific 80s Dutch punk scene." Awesome tri-fold, heavy cardstock sleeve with Dutch/English lyrics. -Mississippi |
|
Artist: DE KIFT Title: Yverzucht Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $12.00 |
| "De Kift emerged from a Dutch squatters movement and the punk waves of the late 70s and early 80s. Their debut vinyl LP Yverzucht was released in 1989. Ferry: guitar & brass (Svatsox); Wim: drums (Rondos, the Ex); Jacco (GRRR): bass; Maarten: vocals (Pistache B.V.). De Kift were a tremendous and original force at the time. Sparse, rhythmic, angular, yet energetic music. Staccato punk with fanfare elements. Maartens lyrics were recited, spat out and crooned, bleak reflective explorations of the Dutch mental state of the times. Maarten (as well as Jacco) departed the band after debuting Yverzucht. Out of the ashes, emerged a new conceptual, literary De Kift that would play on for 20 years. De Kift were part of the squatter movement. Playing benefits, raising funds, eyebrows and soundtracking a lifestyle on its last legs." Includes insert with Dutch/English lyrics. -Mississippi |

Artist: DEAD MOON Title: Stranded In The Mystery Zone Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $14.00 |

Some call them the thinking mans AC/DC and some call them the working mans Roky Erickson but really there is nothing that compares to Dead Moon. They live in a world of their own -- D.I.Y on every imaginable level, brilliant song writing, perfect elemental stripped down playing, honest and intense vocals. Its all here." -Mississippi. |

An utter masterpiece of psychedelic rock straight from the heart." -Mississippi. |

So here it is, the follow up to Mental Blocks. Recorded in 93, DFH lays down 11 tracks of thumping drums, pulsating bass lines, most unusual guitar squacks and Marion Coutts belting out enchanting melodies with voice and her trusty trumpet. 8 Eyed Spy and Ornette Coleman covers (its legit, I swear) complete this perfect album of political art-punk at its best." -Mississippi

Artist: DOG FACED HERMANS Title: Mental Blocks For All Ages Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $11.00 |
|
"Repressed. Dog Faced Hermans was a five-piece band whose style could be described as anarcho-artpunk incorporating folk and noise influences as well as unorthodox instrumentation. Hailing from Scotland, DFH came out of the herky-jerky Glasgow scene with bands like Stretchheads, Dawson and Archbishop Kebab. Mental Blocks was their 2nd full length LP, released in 1991 on the bands own Demon Radge label. They had 3 LPs, 1 12" EP and a collection of EPs, comp tracks and splits before signing on with Alternative Tentacles for their last two LPs. Guitarist Andy Moor has been a part of The Ex for about 12 years now, and bassist Colin McLean is now playing as part of The Exs live set. DFH has influenced bands such as Erase Errata, Veronica Lipgloss, God Is My Co-Pilot, and many more. Mental Blocks is considered one of their (if not the) best and hardest to find albums. Remastered by members of the band for improved clarity over the original release." -Mississippi

"With a reputation for mind-blowing live sets and their own brand of improv meets ethio-jazz meets jazz standards, EJB is steadily gaining popularity in the Pacific Northwest. Lead by Jeff Brown, who along with drummer Michael Hendrickson, spent a tour of duty in Portlands revolving improv ensemble Jackie-O-Motherfucker. As opposed to JOMFs guitar-driven psychedelia, EJB chooses jazz as their vehicle, without the constraints of the term. With a CD on Community Library (Strategy, Eats Tapes, Reanimator) under their belt, the now sextet offers Mississippi Records a conceptual LP of dirges. Limited to 500 copies, includes a free CDR (courtesy of Collective Jyrk) and is packaged in beautiful hand-silkscreened paste-on covers with art by upcoming political art dude Icky Apparatus. Artist: GEBRU, TSEGE MARIAM Title: Spielt Eigene Komposition Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "A most unusual and stunning album. Tsege Mariam Gebru is an Ethiopian nun who has dedicated her life to helping others. She has been composing and playing music on the piano since the 1960s. Her music is a unique mix of Western classical music in the vein of Erik Satie, Ethiopian music and religious Christian meditation music. On this reissue of her first LP, originally released in Germany in a very small pressing, we find Tsege Mariam Gebru playing her own compositions solo on piano. She plays with restrained grace and purity. The record invites repeated listening well and is filled with spiritual warmth. We are very proud to present this LP -- the first in a series of records we will be releasing with music culled from the monumental Ethiopiques CD series. Old school tip on cover." - Mississippi. |

Artist: HAACK & MS. NELSON, BRUCE Title: The Way Out Record For Children Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $16.00 |

"Recorded in 1968, a true psychedelic masterpiece for the kids. Ms. Nelson (a child educator) and Bruce Haack (an early electronic music pioneer) designed this record to open the minds and hearts of children to deeper levels of insight and culture. Not condescending in the least and with a childlike sense of wonder, Bruce and Ms. Nelson lay into some heavy songs about everything from Robots to Indian Mysticism to Motorcycle riding fantasies. Its all in here. The music is all generated by Bruces homemade electronic instruments which churn out proto hip hop beats and straight up avante garde moments left and right. The kids in Ms. Nelsons community chime in with their voices here and there and the record ends with a haunting existential twist thatll leave you screamin for more. A great record for children and adults of all ages. Old school tip on cover." - Mississippi.

Artist: HAGAR THE WOMB Title: A Brighter Shade of Black Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "HAGAR THE WOMB is for many, the missing piece of the UK anarcho punk scene. Formed in 1981, Hagar The Womb was not a typical example of that scene, for they refused to conform to the dress codes and dour seriousness of their peers. What first started as a sextet sporting three female vocalists, soon experienced a healthy bit of turnover. Circulating through at least a dozen band members, Hagar The Womb was often identified by bright colored artwork and outfits, as well as bringing an original and upbeat sound to an otherwise homogenous scene. A week after their inception, they were sharing a bill with The Mob and Zounds. Hagar The Womb would go on to play with the likes of The Apostles, Poison Girls and Rubella Ballet before breaking up in 1985. A Brighter Shade Of Black puts together both of their 12" EPs, Word Of The Womb and Funnery in the Nunnery, as well as a common compilation favorite called "For The Ferrymen." The latter recorded by POISON GIRLS sometimes bassist, PETE FENDER, in the Poison Girls own X-N-Trix Studios. Reissued for the first time and limited to 1,000 copies." -Mississippi. |

Artist: HEMPHILL, SID Title: The Devils Dream Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Multi-instrumentalist, band-leader, and composer Sid Hemphill (1876-1961) was for decades the musical patriarch of the Mississippi Hill Country. He and his band -- comprised of Alec Turpentine Askew, Will Head, and Lucius Smith were fixtures at dances, picnics, and frolics throughout the right triangle formed by Memphis, the Delta, and the Hill Country. This LP features Alan Lomaxs first recording of Blind Sid in August 1942, near Sledge, Mississippi, where the Hemphill band was appearing at a country picnic. By that date hundreds of commercial records had been made of the music of the Delta, and the preponderance of those were of or relating to the blues form, with guitar or piano accompaniment. Lomaxs recordings were the first made of the Hill Countrys local music, and contributed to a broader perspective of black vernacular instrumentation with their inclusion of the fiddle and banjo of the string band, the fife and drum ensemble, and the cane panpipes or quills. This music is wild & loose & of a style seldom heard. Includes liner notes insert by Nathan Salsburg." -Mississippi. |

Artist: HURLEY, MICHAEL Title: Back Home with Drifting Woods Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $18.00 |
| "Unbelievably great Hurley recordings from 1964, never before heard. Recorded by Fred Ramsey as part of the same sessions that resulted in Michaels First Songs LP on Folkways. Side A starts with Whatll You Say, Whatll You Do, a pretty psychedelic classic that can very well put you into some kinda trance. After that we hear The Blues Comes Around - a sad drifty little tune, then Little Girl On Roller Skates with a rare Hurley harmonica solo and hallucinatory lyrics worthy of some examination and then a beautiful alternate take on one of Michaels all time greats - The Tea Song. Side B starts up with yet more alternate takes of songs from the Folkways LP - this time of Intersolar blues and I Like My Wine. After that we get to hear two great compositions for the first time, and man oh man are they pretty - Hey Hey Hey Hey and I Love You Babe. Real great stuff all around that we recommend for deep into it Hurley fans and newcomers to his art alike. Michael Hurley is a great American song writer with his own unique way of seeing the world and this LP is a great testament to his vision. Faux folkways wraparound cover with liner note insert by Hurley himself. Co-release with our friends Neros Neptune." - Mississippi. |

Artist: HURLEY, MICHAEL Title: Blue Hills Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "New recordings by Michael. On this LP we find Hurley stretching out on six longer than usual compositions that are heartbreaking & beautiful as anything hes ever done. Side one features Hurley on a creaky pump organ & a hammond organ. Side two starts out with two newer compositions - just Michael on guitar & vocals. The record ends with a stunning version of Tea Song (which Michael originally wrote & recorded way back in 1963). We rarely resort to hyperbole on these descriptions, but we have to say that this LP is one of the more moving things weve ever heard. A sustained feeling of loss & need for redemption haunts this record. It aint easy listening, but then what worth a damn is?" -Mississippi. |

Artist: HURLEY, MICHAEL Title: Fatboy Spring Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
|
"A full LP of never before released Hurley recordings from 1972-73! Great early versions of classic Hurley songs such as Automatic Slim & the Fatboys, Drivin Wheel, Ghost woman Blues, Watchin the Show, and The Portland Water that come off for the most part better than later releases of these songs. Hurley is backed up by The Fatboys - not the rotund hip hop crew from the film Disorderlies, but rather a bunch of not so fat nice guys in Vermont who played mostly for the local dairy farmers. (Later they were known as Sheriff Mocus & the Deranged Cowboys) A laid back countryish album sure to please the hardcore Hurley fan and casual listener too. Deep and breezy. Cover painting by Michael. A co-release with our friends label in San Francisco, Secret Seven." - Mississippi.

Artist: HURLEY, MICHAEL Title: Parsnip Snips Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Originally released in 1997 in Germany in a press size of 500. These original copies were seized by the government shortly after the records release. Only 150 or so were sold before the seizing, but since then copies have leaked out of whatever dank German bureaucratic basement they were relegated to. Still, a very hard record to find for years, now back in print. Our current reissue was re-mastered from the original tapes and has superior sound quality to the original. Culled from Michaels unreleased output between his First Songs LP from 1964 and Armchair Boogie in 1972. All tracks feature just Michael and guitar. Absolutely beautiful folk music by the singular Snock -- in our opinion, one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time." -Mississippi |

Artist: JAY, ABNER Title: Folk Song Stylist Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $15.00 |
|
"Long awaited follow up to the True Story of Abner Jay LP. Abner Jay was a man who had a grand sweeping vision of what folk music was. In his lifetime his expression of what folk music could be encompassed some serious stylistic variations. Sometimes he was a one man band traveling troubadour playing an electric banjo, harmonica, & drums who tried to hoodwink audiences into believing that he was 150 years old & the standard bearer for authentic Americana. Sometimes he played in electric straight up R&B bands such as Koko Joe & the Jobhunters. Sometimes he claimed to be the black Bob Dylan strumming an acoustic guitar & singing socially conscious urban folk. On this LP we find Abner in all of these modes & more. (He also does a pop song about a submarine disaster & a beautiful gospel song). Culled from a mix of Abners 45s & LPs spanning the period 1964-1973, including Abners first long lost LP, which we reproduced the cover image for this LP from. We hope that this release will help to further the current wave of understanding that Abner Jay is an important artist who deserves a wider audience than he ever received during his lifetime. Comes with a self promotional pamphlet penned by Abner & a color photo of Abner. Housed in an old school tip on sleeve. We are very proud to get this incredibly hard to find material out into the world." -Mississippi

Artist: JAY, ABNER Title: Last Ole Ministrel Man Format: 10" Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "ABNER JAYs last recording session. Here we find him laying into five never before released compositions (...and one never released version of his popular tune "Cocaine) On these songs the usual one man band set up is put aside and replaced by a simple delicate acoustic guitar and harmonica accompaniment, with the exception of the rocking "My Middle Name Is The Blues," which has Abners classic sound in full force. The first track, "I Cried," is as sad as they come. The last track, "Too Poor To Live, Too Poor To Die," is almost too honest to bear. Beyond that is the strange blues number "Love Wheel." Altogether this 10-inch stands as a fitting last testament by one of Americas most neglected musical geniuses. Tip-on old school cover. Each copy includes two commemorative photos of Abner and a 16-page booklet with extensive liner notes by JACK TEAGUE, who recorded this session and palled around with Abner in his final days." -Mississippi. |

"2nd edition with regular printed jacket. Original recordings from 1927-1929, with Phillips perhaps accompanied on the Dolceola (miniature piano-like instrument). Beautifully haunting music from Phillips. His sweetly-sung Christian blues, bathed in a celestial haze of notes from an instrument that sounds like a childs music box, stand out amongst the work of guitar evangelists and street corner Scripture-ites of the era. Phillips sacred porch songs provide evidence of a higher power, for how could man alone create music for the angels? These recordings sound remarkable from being from the 1920s."-Mississippi Records.

Artist: RANGE RATS Title: Range Rats Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $15.00 |
| "Recorded in 1986 & completely unreleased until now - this is Fred & Toody Coles (Weeds, Lollipop Shoppe, Zipper, Torpedoes, Rats, Western Front, Desperate Edge, Dead Moon, Pierced Arrows, & so on) great lost country LP! All original compositions...some sad lilting ballads & some punk as hell. Two songs feature Fred & Toddy playing with Rollie, a janky Roland drum machine that didnt keep a consistent meter very well. The rest of the songs were recorded with a lean mean band. We are very proud to bring this LP into the world for the first time - another facet of the genius of Fred & Toody Cole & low-fi as can be. Artist: RIVERS, BOYD Title: You Cant Make Me Doubt Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "First full length album by one of the greatest gospel musicians of all time! Boyd Rivers was an amazing but unfortunately, little known gospel artist. Comparisons could be made to Charlie Jackson, but in the end not too many people sound anything like Boyd Rivers. Side one features Boyd playing stunning electric guitar & belting out 6 incredibly heavy songs. Side two finds Boyd playing acoustic guitar -- a bit mellower but still impassioned. All the material on this album has never been released, with the exception of Fire In My Bones -- the title track of the Case Quarter 3 CD gospel compilation. (Its also on our Last Time Around compilation) Its somewhat unbelievable that Boyd has not been heard more out in the world -- but so it goes. Includes liner notes by Amos Harvey. Old school tip on cover." -Mississippi. |

Artist: THOMAS, HENRY Title: Bull Doze Blues Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "Twelve of our favorite songs by amazing Texas blues songster HENRY THOMAS. Thomas recorded a couple dozen sides between 1927-29 often accompanying himself on the quills, a pan flute sounding instrument. A traveling musician with an older style than many of the country blues musicians recorded in the 20s. Includes his classic numbers Fishing Blues, Railroadin Some, Honey, Wont You Allow Me One More Chance, the beautiful gospel number Jonah in the Wilderness and many more." -Mississippi. |

Artist: THOMAS, URAL Title: Fade Away/Smile Format: 7" Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $8.00 |
| "The fourth volume in our North Portland Music Series -- a most unusual record. Ural recorded this in his house with a bunch of neighborhood kids back in 1970. Fade Away is reminiscent of the bad trip portion of Sly & the family Stones Theres A Riot Goin On. A lazy funk riff is accompanied by drony vocal incantations & kids blowing into sawed off bed posts as if they were trumpets! It really happened. Smile is a more straightforward simple ballad wherein Ural sends a positive message out to the world. Ural self pressed 300 copies of this way back when just to prove to the kids accompanying him on it that they can do anything they want if they put their minds to it. Its message rings true today. Housed in a thick old school tip on sleeve." -Mississippi |
|
Artist: THOMAS, URAL Title: Push Em Up/ Deep Within My Heart Format: 7" Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $8.00 |
| "The third volume in our North Portland Music Series, two great soul songs by local legend Ural Thomas recorded in 1960. Push em, Up is an upbeat soul stomper for the dance floor. Deep Within My Heart is a pretty ballad with tight harmonies & lots of groove. Ural is an underappreciated musician who toured opening for Otis Redding back in the day, had James Brown plagiarize his style, played in countless bands in Portland & Seattle, built a house out of debris salvaged from the Willamette river, mentored countless kids in the neighborhood, & probably wrestled an alligator or two. Proof that unsung heroes live right in our backyard. Housed in a thick old school tip on sleeve." -Mississippi |

Artist: TILLIS, PERRY Title: In Times Like These Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
|
"Perry Tillis was born July 29, 1919, in Elba, Alabama , and began playing his brand of rambling blues at a very early age. He continued playing the blues and singing gospel, despite going blind, up until his death on November 3, 2004. In the 40s Tillis played the Chicago blues circuit. However, when a revelation convinced him it was the devils music, he moved back home and began preaching the gospel. This LP is culled from 72 hours of cassette tapes recorded during the last 10 years of Tillis life. Extremely lo-fi gospel with Tillis playing guitar and singing into boombox. Not for the faint of heart. This is a first time release of this material. Liner notes included with archival photos. Tip-on jackets." -- Mississippi Records

"Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, George Mitchell recorded extensively in the South. Mitchell concentrated mainly on local blues traditions, recording some famous bluesmen and many otherwise ignored artists. The George Mitchell Collection was originally released as a series of forty-five EPs on Fat Possum; this LP contains our favorite fourteen tracks. This LP represents songs from many well-known blues musicians such as Fred McDowell, Furry Lewis and Joe Calicott as well as some from criminally under-represented artists like Jessie Mae Hemphill, Rosa Lee Hill and John Lee Ziegler. |
Artist: V/A Title: I Dont Feel at Home in this World Anymore 1927-1948 Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $15.00 |
|
"This compilation is our tribute to the music made in the U.S. between 1927 and 1948. We decided not only to focus on traditional genres (blues, old-time, Cajun), but to also show the music that was brought by the boatloads of immigrants coming to these shores. Their music influenced and still affects our culture today. The album starts off with a heavenly example of Greek rebetica from Marika Papagika. Also featured is early Tex-Mex pioneer Lydia Mendoza and gospel duo Two Gospel Keys. The latter gives us our title track. Louisiana Cajun music is beautifully executed by artists Cleoma Falcon and Blind Uncle Gaspard with Dela Lachney. The Blue Sky Boys may be considered old-time, but their haunting, melancholic harmonies belong in their own genre. The Caresser and Wilmouth Houdini bring on the Calypso with that New York jazz flavor. Hawaiian slack key guitar is demonstrated by Mike Hanapis Ilima Islanders and Mme. Rivieres Hawaiians. Aside from Calypso, NY was also a big hub for Jewish klezmer, as shown by Jacob Hoffman playing with Henry Kandels Orchestra. Sexteto Bolona is a great example of the roots of salsa and theres even a mystery track by an unknown Indonesian folk singer of the time. The comp ends with blues performer Big Boy Cleveland with his oddly original Quill Blues. A beautiful record from beginning to end." -Mississippi Records.

Beautiful music by some of Africas finest griots. At times melancholic and at others romantic pop music. We think this is one of our strongest releases ever. Old school tip on cover. Comes with a 16-page full color booklet featuring descriptive notes & beautiful never before published photos." -Mississippi. |

Artist: V/A Title: Love Is Love Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $12.00 |
|
"A very unusual little collection -- one that brings together guitar-based numbers from a variety of African sources -- then packages the whole thing with a relatively discreet sort of presentation! The styles here are mostly pre-funk, but offer up some creative use of the guitar -- or the "dry guitar", if you will -- in tracks that mostly have a relatively spare sort of sound, and which mix guitar with bits of percussion, vocals, flute, and other instrumentation. Titles include "Sax Jive" by Leribe, "Castle Beer" by William Siwale & Friends, "Jumbe" by Elija Ishmael, "Tumshukuru" by W John Ondolo, "Ulayinda" by George Kazoka, "Khukhaua" by Jimmy Amukamua, and "Love Is Love" by Alemanyo Eshintay." - Mississippi.

Artist: V/A Title: Sticks Over My Shoulder Format: LP Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $16.00 |

Artist: V/A Title: Street Music of Yogyakarta Format: LP + 7" Label: Mississippi Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "In 1978 JACK BODY recorded an amazing amount of street musicians in Java. His ear was geared not just towards traditional folk forms of music but also to all the new hybrids of pop street music. Here we find a mix of his recordings that really cannot be classified easily. Influences on the music include Bollywood soundtracks, American rock & pop, Javanese traditional songs and modern gamelan music. All these recordings were made in the street so you can hear babies crying, car horns & food frying throughout. Raw folk music by and for the people, this is the real deal. There was too much good music to fit on an LP, so weve included a free bonus 7-inch 33 RPM EP of material. Comes in old-school "tip on" sleeves. Includes a booklet with liner notes by Jack Brody. A truly unique record filled with beautiful and stirring sounds." -Mississippi |

"People were saying that Southern folk song was dead, that the land that had produced American jazz, the blues, the spirituals, the mountain ballads and the work songs had gone sterile." -- Alan Lomax, 1960.
"In 1959 and 1960, at the height of the Folk Revival, Alan Lomax undertook the first-ever stereo field recording trip through the American South to document its still thriving vernacular musical culture. He traveled through Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia, and North Carolina, making over 70 hours of recordings. The trip came to be known as Lomaxs Southern Journey, and its recordings were first issued for the Atlantic and Prestige labels in the early 60s. Those, however, as well as subsequent releases on New World and Rounder Records, are now all out of print. To remedy this, and to celebrate the Southern Journeys 50th anniversary, Mississippi Records and the Alan Lomax Collection have collaborated on five commemorative LPs, spanning the breadth of Lomaxs 59-60 Southern recordings, drawing on new transfers of the original 1/4" tapes, and featuring a considerable amount of previously unreleased material. The five LP volumes feature singing siblings Hobart Smith and Texas Gladden from Saltville, Virginia; menhaden fishermens chorus the Bright Light Quartet; the Young Brothers Mississippi Hill Country fife and drum band; Blue Ridge instrumentalists Wade Ward and Charlie Higgins; Bessie Jones and the Georgia Sea Island Singers; work songs and hollers from Parchman Farm; congregational hymns from African American and white Appalachian meeting-houses; Alabamas singing washerwoman Vera Ward Hall; the 1959 United Sacred Harp Convention; and the debut recordings of bluesman Fred McDowell, among much else. Each volume is being sold separately with its own distinctive packaging. All come with a 12-page booklet featuring many never before published photos. Old school tip on sleeves & beautiful sound. Not to be missed!" -Mississippi
