Artist: DE LAET, JORIS
Title: SEM etc
Format: Triple LP Box Set
Label: Metaphon
Country: Belgium
Price: $65.00
Edition of 300. Comes in a hardboard linen box with 22-page booklet and large poster with score. “Joris de Laet (Belgium, 1947) is a fully autodidact composer of electroacoustic music. Between 1972 and 1975 he worked at the IPEM along with Lucien Goethals and Karel Goeyvaerts and in 1973 he founded the SEM (Studio for Experimental Music) where he organised plenty of group sessions, live performances, lectures,... De Laets work is adventurous, complex and difficult to classify, due to many interesting contrasts in his style and approach - academic vs intuitive, modern composition vs free improvisation, acoustic vs electronic, sound vs noise,...

This selection of his early recordings (1972-1979) represents an overview of his intriguingly radical and highly personal work which includes solo tape experiments, live electronics with Karel Goeyvaerts and group performances with experimental instrumentalists from the SEM ensemble : Pieter Kuyl (chapmanstick), Leo Verheyen (trombone), Paul Adriaenssens (flute and amplified objects), Maurice Verstuyft (flute).

All material has been mastered from the original tapes and is previously unreleased.” - Metaphon.

Title: Institute for Psychoacoustic and Electronic Music: 50 Years of Electronic and Electroacoustic Music at the Ghent University
Format: Triple LP/Book/Double CD Box Set
Label: Metaphon
Country: Belgium
Price: $135.00
"Edition of 300 copies. In commemoration of IPEM’s 50th anniversary, Metaphon presents next to the recently released CD edition (2 CDs with lavishy illustrated 88 page book) a deluxe vinyl edition containing 3 LPs with the book and the 2 CDs (same material as the LPs) all housed in a hardboard linen LP box. From the huge archive of IPEM recordings a selection was made featuring works by Lucien Goethals, Didier Gazelle, Louis De Meester, David Van de Woestijne, Stefan Beyst, Helmut Lachenmann, Boudewijn Buckinx, Karel Goeyvaerts, Emmanuel Van Weerst, Peter Beyls, Raoul De Smet, Frank Nuyts, Ricardo Mandolini, Peter Schuback, Stephen Montague and Yves Knockaert. All tracks were recorded at the IPEM studio and mastered from the original tapes. Most tracks are previously unreleased. The absolute freedom of thought, together with the availability of new technology for sound recording, sound manipulation and sound distribution formed a fertile soil for the production of electroacoustic music at the IPEM in Ghent. The music is radical in many ways, both in terms of composition and in the use of sounds and their combinations. The music ignores traditional structures and emerging phenomena such as tonality and meter and replaces them with other structural principles based on sound transformations and gestures." -Metaphon.

Title: 1975-1978
Format: 4CD Box Set
Label: Metaphon
Country: Belgium
Price: $85.00
Hardboard linen CD box contains 4 digipack CDs and a 78 page booklet with notes and photos from B.O. Signed and numbered edition of 500 copies. "There are times when you collect material, ideas, and emotions without being able to combine them. You feel as if you are laying the foundations of a work without knowing its form and you wait, feeling curious. You let the sounds rest until the evening when birth resembles death. The fruit is ripe for an instant only, the time it takes to fall. Like the virgins veil. Bold wine, austere lineage. Since 1978, Baudouin Oosterlynck has been introducing his music in the floor, the walls, the windows, etc., thereby creating his first musical installations and sound installations. The music no longer goes towards the listeners ears but it is the listeners ears that go towards the music. All of this happens in silence. He did musical performances in function of acoustic phenomena particular to specific architectures. He completed 15,000 km on foot and by bicycle in Europe, looking for variations of silence. For the past fifteen years he has been producing listening prosthesis and special instruments played by the listener in silence! There are more than 180 opuses to date." - Metaphon.

Artist: RANTA, MICHAEL/MIKE LEWIS/CONNY PLANK
Title: Mu
Format: Double CD Boxset
Label: Metaphon
Country: Belgium
Price: $30.00
"The only time this ensemble got together before was for the singular and legendary Wired session recorded in 1970 and published on the Deutsche Grammophon box set Free Improvisation in 1974. The Wired session also included Karl-Heinz Böttner while this release of Mu just has the trio of Ranta, Lewis and Plank. Mu got recorded a few months after the Wired session, in Planks studio, but never got released strangely enough. Yet its a true hidden treasure of marvelous minimal psychedelic improvisations with an oriental touch controlled and mixed by Diabolis in Musica Conny Plank. Although the intense recording session ended early in the morning the mixdown was still done straight afterwards of which this is the direct result for MU1, Mu2, and Mu4. For Mu3 Michael Ranta added live percussion to the original tape mix and dedicated it to Mike Lewis. Due to circumstances and moving to different continents they never had the chance to meet again. Previously unreleased studio material from 1970 recorded a few months after the legendary Wired session. Hardboard linen CD box contains 2 CDs and a 28-page booklet with biography text and notes from Michael Ranta (in Dutch, German and English). Edition of 500 copies." -Metaphon.

Michael Ranta : percussion, guitars and prepared thundersheet
Mike Lewis : keyboards, wind instruments and percussion
Conny Plank : live electronics, sound control, recording supervision, mix

"What a stunning surprise discovery of this obscure ensemble with Michael Ranta, Mike Lewis and Krautrock master Conny Plank. As on the legendary Wired LP on the Free Improvisation box set (Deutsche Grammophon 1974) they created an amazing free form abstraction, a floating resonant and timeless music, similar in many ways to the early experiments of Tangerine Dream but in a world of its own, in all their twisted exotic and melancholy beauty... To be filed under classic Krautrock, a masterpiece!" - Steven Stapleton.

Artist: SOUFFRIAU, ARSENE
Title: Experiences BIMES
Format: Triple LP Boxset
Label: Metaphon
Country: Belgium
Price: $114.00
"Arsène Souffriau (born Brussels 1926) is a cornerstone of the first generation of Belgian electronic and experimental music composers along with Henri Pousseur, Karel Goeyvaerts and Leo Küpper. Regardless of decades of dedicated work he received even less recognition than his Belgian contemporaries. In the late 60s Souffriau got some appreciation among the larger public for his contribution of electronic sounds to the Free Electronic Pop Concept LP, a psychedelic pop album around the brothers Jess & James. But his professional musical career that started at a young age reached much further than this: he worked as a conductor, composer, sound editor, functional music composer for film, documentary and theatre, producing a massive quantity of recordings. Since the early 60s, in his free time, he has independently been working in his home studio BIMES, where he has recorded numerous experimental, electronic music works of which most never left his studio. The pieces on this release, which span over a period of almost 40 years, have been selected from Souffriaus private music archive and were mostly recorded at his BIMES studio. The pieces clearly depict the wide spectrum of his work throughout the time starting with the primitive concrete tape music from the early 60s, going through his period of (group) improvisation (Groupe Fusion) with analogue (and live) electronics towards the digital techniques in the 80s and 90s using MIDI and computer. Hardboard linen LP box version, contains 3 LPs and a 20-page large-format booklet with extensive background, photos and notes from A.S. (in Dutch, French and English). Edition of 200 copies." -Metaphon
