Artist: CURRAN, ALVIN
Title: Canti Illuminati
Format: CD
Label: Fringes
Country: Italy
Price: $20.00
"Complete reissue of the rare LP, originally issued by Fore in 1982, with original cover and liner notes, plus an updated presentation written by the composer. Two side-long beautiful piece for voices, synthesizer, tapes and electronics, and one of Currans best works. The music of this period and place, never a formal movement, was anchored both aesthetically and philosophically in the vital secrets of minimalism, in the sounds of the environment, however unassuming or flawed, in the cyclical generation of tones and voltage controlled substances, solo voice, and the whole body as solo performer, in men and women as equals, in stories of ordinary people, in gestures of eloquent simplicity as well as open spirituality, in irony as well as transcendental yearning. Improvisation and composition were reconciled as children of the same parents and immaculate mathematical structures could easily cohabit under the same roof with chance . Instrumental virtuosity and implacable drones were augmented to their human limits. And Rock music and musique concrete both contributed new values to amplification beat and noise. Canti Illuminati , was of course my early tribute to the human voice, as the most natural source of music known. In this period there were many experiments going on in the world based on collective vocal improvisation -- Pauline Oliveros Deep Listening work at UCSD, Roberto Laneris Roman group Prima Materia, David Hykes and his Harmonic Choir in New York, now based in France, and my own work in group vocal Improvisation at the Accademia Nazionale dArte Drammatica in Rome, where I taught between 1975 and 1980. I always told my students: dont forget! when the electricity gets turned off, you always have your voice/ your entire body as a basic musical instrument. When this work was being considered for an LP recording I decided to make it into a two part piece, which, on side one, explores a variegated soundscape of structured choral improvisation, and from this (side two) there emerges a solo platform for my own voice, tape delayed feedback, and my then trusty Serge Synthesizer and Sequencer. In later solo performances I concentrated entirely on this latter music, developing an intense and slowly expanding microtonal unison by matching my voice with a finely detuned keyboard. In retrospect this could be seen as a direct homage to Giacinto Scelsi, who opened avenues of magical perspectives to many of us young composers in Rome at that time." -- Alvin Curran, October-November 2002.

Title: Sopranino / Radio
Format: CD
Label: Fringes
Country: Italy
Price: $16.00
"Exploring sound, just whistles, from the fragile highs to the raucous. How can the editing give any account of the process involved ? Take half an hour or so from each location. Listen... First, ⿿Michels studio⿝, what talked to us was was kept. Next without trying to remember what has just been heard move on to Forest with the wind in the branches, same here, just listen, keep another fragment and so on for the other two, by the Stream and on a Path where we picked some firewood. Back to the first place, cyles...Somewhere along the radio interrupts ---" -(from the inner liner notes). "Michel Doneda : Sopranino Saxophone, Radio; Pierre-Olivier Boulant : Microphonography, Radio. One very long track (40 minutes) recorded in four open-air locations and sixty-three very short fragments, for a total of 63 minutes of high pitched sopranino saxophone sounds, wondefully recorded by Pierre-Olivier Boulant in Autumn 2001. Artist: LABELLE, BRANDON
Title: Automatic Radio
Format: CD
Label: Fringes
Country: ITALY
Price: $15.00
"This new Cd by Brandon Labelle includes three new compositions: "Speaking in Tongues": Conflating "human speech" with "animal speech"--a mimicry that draws thetongue outside "idiolectical" usage (to speak as a good boy should)--language and the body become part of the same mechanism of conveying a message; though in turn, this conflation emphasizes the schism that ruptures this process--the tension inherent in "speaking as a body (sensuality)" and "speaking as an individual (social behavior)". "Multitude-Solitude": This work was commissioned by Kunstradio and was produced during a 3-daystay in Vienna in August 2000. In response to the invitation to make a work for radio I decided to produce all the sound-materials while in Vienna, drawing upon a direct relationship to the city and my experience there. This process consisted of primarily two activities: firstly, amplifying pre-recorded sounds of "crowds" from various events and functions in public spaces in Vienna, and re-recording them--in essence, overlaying public spaces and public crowds on top of each other and highlighting the "multiplicity" of overheard voices, and through this, how language becomes abstracted when it is situated against public space; secondly, taking a series of walks around Vienna with contact microphones taped to the bottoms of my shoes. What resulted from these walks was a kind of sonic residue of the meeting between body and space, between private experience and public environment, underscoring how as an individual one is always part of a greater situation." "Pillow Talking"(in collaboration with l. chasse): This work was produced as a parallel performance to a concert by John Hudak at 7hz, San Francisco, September 2000. The parallel performance occurred through recording Hudaks own performance by placing contact microphones on a glass floor from a mezzanine within the performance space. In addition, a second contact microphone was mounted on a metal cooking funnel which I then placed inside my mouth. In essence, the final work is a combination of Hudaks performance and the subsequent "translation" of it as recorded through the microphones. This "translation" is in turn mediated through the architectural structure of the performance space, the metal funnel and through the cavity of my mouth. Edition of 500 copies in oversized cardoboard folder, with a color photo by Renato Rinaldi. Includes the text "Automatic Radio" by Brandon Labelle." - Fringes.

Artist: SCIAJANO, DOMENICO
Title: Broken Bridge
Format: CD
Label: Fringes
Country: Italy
Price: $15.00
"Domenico Sciajno is a bass player from sicily, italy, and he recorded these pieces (45 minutes) at home last summer (the recording quality is excellent). most of the music is very intense and drone oriented, with long sub-bass tones and lots of extended techniques, but not in a "virtuoso" sense (what i dont like in most of the solo instrumental releases). some other pieces are more percussive, and even melodic sometimes.Released in the usual fringes packaging (but with a less fragile plastic sleeve !), are limited to 400 copies and seem to go away pretty fast." - Fringes.

Artist: VALENTINE, MATT
Title: Space Chanteys
Format: LP
Label: Fringes
Country: Italy
Price: $22.00
"Matt Valentine creates, has created, and will continue to create from inside of a continuum that unspools from a source that is also so distant as to be invisible. Mysterious Translucence is not just the name of his shoe. Space Chanteys is really the first honest solo album that Matt Valentine has created. There have been others that are somewhat like it, or are related to it, in shape, or in style, but they are not it. This alone is it. It is Space Chanteys. Recorded live, back in October 100, the ensemble here has run through all of Matts pockets on many occasions. Some were/are part of the Tower Recordings collective. Others are associated with the MVEE Medicine Show. Each of them has fingered keys and touched lint that has deep and private resonance in the Valentinian flow. They take a deep collective breath here and release it slowly, like a sigh trapped in the highest tower of Greasers Palace. And its a gasser. Those enlightened people who are aware of his recordings, have a tendency to think of Matts music as part of the American volk tradition. And, indeed, a portion of it does reside there. But as with so many of the interesting inventions inside out-culture currency, the soul of this volk music emerged from synchretic collisions between psychedelic rock and avant garde jazz and country blues and trance-drone-minimalism as well as a primitive form of volk-proper. The material on Space Chanteys is beautiful in its fracture. Its fissures phosphoresce in the darkness w/ an unearthly radiance: glow-in-the-dark teeth set into the gums of eternity.." -Byron Coley. Also includes PG Six, Dean Roberts, Samara Lubelski (Hall Of Fame), Erika Elder and Tim Barnes. Edition of 650 copies on 220 gram vinyl.
