Artist: CAUSA SUI
Title: Euporie Tide
Format: Double LP
Label: El Paraiso
Country: Denmark
Price: $30.00
"Double LP version, includes a download coupon for the album. Since they formed in 2004, Danish instrumental four-piece Causa Sui has become a much-revered act on the fertile European psych scene. The soil planted in festivals like Roadburn, Roskilde, Burg Herzberg, has been harvested with praise by Uncut, Julian Cope, and Mojo, as well as growing a dedicated fanbase -- paying top Euros for a first edition vinyl of any of the bands seven past LPs. Many psych and stoner-rock bands aim for the perfect imitation of that vintage heavy psych sound circa 1970, but Causa Sui have forged their own distinct path. Causa Sui draws on a larger pool than the usual derived exploration of Sabbath riffs and clichéd Krautrock jamming. Collaborations include members of Tortoise and Chicago Underground Collective (under the name Chicago Odense Ensemble) and Sunburned Hand Of The Man (released as Pewtr Sessions,) and the band always adds untraditional flavors, past and present, into their seething experimental sound. Causa Sui has been described as "the sound of a giant wave rolling up through the last four decades of rock," which is truer than ever for their most ambitious album to date, Euporie Tide. Yes, the heavy riffs are certainly here, but its apparent that it does not tread the waters of retro rock. Theres a different depth here. Whereas previous albums were brewed with spontaneity, and flickers of complete improv, Euporie Tide was meticulously perfected over years of work. Opening track "Homage" pays tribute to the early/mid-1990s American grunge and stoner-rock bands the band grew up with. From that point of departure, Causa Sui goes on to weave a rich and complex textile, with threads coming from early 1970s electric jazz, post-rock, exotica, heavy rock, raga, and all kinds of psychedelia. Whether the band goes for straight-up rock or ventures into freeform territory, theres always that certain warmth and atmosphere present, which is so characteristic for Causa Sui. When one reaches the multigenre-influenced grooves on the albums D-side, its obvious that the band has arrived at something that is very relevant in the present day. The album was recorded and produced by Jonas Munk, crafting a sound that is simultaneously naturalistic in approach, yet strangely detailed. The album was mastered in a way as to maintain the full dynamic range of the recordings." - El Paraiso.

Title: Pewtr Sessions 1-2
Format: Double LP
Label: El Paraiso
Country: Denmark
Price: $30.00
"2014 repress of this release from 2012. Pewtr Sessions 1-2 collects two limited vinyl-only Causa Sui albums, originally released in 2011. The two albums, released in April and August respectively, both feature American musician Ron Schneiderman and both sold out immediately after release. Schneiderman from American improv-rock collective Sunburned Hand of the Man first got together with Danish stoner/Kraut/jazz ensemble Causa Sui in December 2006 for a loose, improvised gig at the old cinema at Christiania -- Copenhagens autonomous, and notorious, free commune. A live recording of this gig was released the following year, under the curious bandname Pewtr jjjjj, and became widely admired among fans of free-form psychedelic rock for its updated version of late 1960s/early 1970s freak-out bands such as Blue Cheer, Guru Guru and Ash Ra Tempel. In the early summer of 2009 Schneiderman was back in Denmark, this time for a three-week stay as co-curator of the art-and-music event Festival of Endless Gratitude. During this period the group was united again for a few shows and a couple of recording sessions in Causa Suis studio in Odense, which resulted in the Pewtr Sessions albums. These records consist of loosely structured sun and beer-fueled jams that were later edited and mixed by Causa Sui guitar player and producer Jonas Munk. While all the psychedelic fury from the Christiania live recording is still very prevalent on these studio sessions, they also see the group channeling into new territories, such as pieces heavy on analog electronics and motoric grooves. Pewtr Sessions 1 and 2 are albums that could only be recorded in an impulsive mode. Yet there is an alternative kind of structure taking place in almost every piece -- some intuitive, almost psychic connection, which moves the sounds from one place to another." - El Paraiso.

Title: Pewtr Sessions 3
Format: LP
Label: El Paraiso
Country: Denmark
Price: $27.00
"Causa Sui returns with a third round of mind-bending jams featuring Ron Schneiderman! The savage, kaleidoscopic improvisations of the quintets previous two volumes instantly gained reverence among fans of free-flowing Krautrock and detuned stoner rock, and this brand new addition, recorded in the late summer of 2013, fulfills the groups potential entirely. The Krautrock grooves, the low-end heaviness and the sprawling furor is still very much present -- but this set is also permeated by a rare free jazz sensibility, at times recalling American masters of improvisation such as John Coltrane and Don Cherry in spirit. Ferociously experimental, yet absolutely welcoming and corporal. "Incipiency Suite," which takes up the entire B-side of this record, stands as the high pinnacle of what this group is capable of with the inclusion of Ron Schneiderman: an afternoon of spontaneously-recorded parts, cut-and-pasted into an abundant whole by studio wiz Jonas Munk, creating a unique interplay between in-the-moment improvisation and creative studio editing. History: Ron Schneiderman (aka Pewtr) from American impro-rock collective Sunburned Hand Of The Man first got together with Danish stoner/Kraut/jazz ensemble Causa Sui in December 2006 for a loose, improvised gig at the old cinema at Christiania -- Copenhagens autonomous, and notorious, free commune. A live recording of this gig was released the following year, under the curious bandname Pewtr jjjjj, and became widely-admired among fans of free-form psychedelic rock for its updated version of late 1960s/early 1970s freak-out bands such as Blue Cheer, Guru Guru and Ash Ra Tempel. During this period the group was united again for a few shows and a couple of recording sessions in Causa Suis studio in Odense, which resulted in Pewtr Sessions 1 and 2. The group got together again for a performance at 2012s Roskilde Festival and later again at Festival of Endless Gratitude in the summer of 2013. It was during the latter sojourn that Pewtr Sessions 3 was recorded." - El Paraiso.

Title: Absorb/Fabric/Cascade
Format: LP
Label: El Paraiso
Country: Denmark
Price: $21.00
"Second solo LP from Causa Sui guitar player and producer Jonas Munk. This is pattern music, characterized by slow builds and subtle, but refined transformations, where gradual tectonic shifts and tiny harmonic gestures generate vivid emotional responses. Instead of imposing any direct intention or meaning, its an album that can create a mental environment for the listener to expand and open up into. "Absorb," taking up the entire A-side, is a piece of meticulous balance, structured from techniques recalling the classical minimalists: soft-glowing analog synthesizer patterns in perpetual motion, creating new harmonic content as each bar progresses. Gradually, randomized modular effects are introduced as well as layers of white noise and detuned, heavily tube-overdriven guitar drones, slowly bathing the piece in warmly filtered fuzz. The B-side opens with two identical organ lines played against each other. After a few minutes the organs lock into a an effortless flow, gently rolling toward a pastoral peak several minutes later, where piano and various layers of electronics enters the soundscape, recalling the blissed-out spiritualism of Alice Coltrane or Popol Vuh. The albums last track, "Cascade," opens peacefully but soon enough crosses into an oscillating flood of sound. Gradually the intertwined layers of sound rise to enormous billows of sonic saturation, where each drone harmonizes against layers of distorted pulses. LP pressed on colored vinyl; includes download card. Limited to 500 copies.” - El Paraiso.

Title: III+IIII
Format: Double LP
Label: El Paraiso
Country: Denmark
Price: $30.00
“Papir, from Copenhagen, Denmark, have gradually developed their unique vision of instrumental psychedelic rock over the course of four albums. The two albums collected here, Papir III (EPR 012LP, 2013) and Papir IIII (EPR 015LP, 2014), perfectly encompass everything the band represents -- from explosive, guitar-solo driven peaks through motoric krautrock grooves to peaceful and atmospheric soundscapes. Recorded in two different sessions, one in Copenhagen and another out in the Danish countryside with Causa Suis Jonas Munk, who also mixed and mastered both albums, producing them with an organic but powerful sound and maintaining the full dynamic range.” - El Paraiso.

Title: Stundum
Format: Double LP
Label: El Paraiso
Country: Denmark
Price: $30.00
"2014 repress of the second album from Papir, originally released in 2011. Papir is a trio from Copenhagen, Denmark who have played together for years under various names while slowly, but surely, perfecting their unique brand of semi-improvisational psychedelic rock. Based around Christoffer Brøchmanns complex and powerful drumming, Papir creates instrumental journeys -- organic structures of sound that move forward with the hypnotic groove of Can or electric Miles Davis through euphoric peaks, thunderous riffs and beautiful cosmic dronescapes. Nicklas Sørensens guitar playing displays his love for fuzzed-out psychedelic rock from the 1960s and 1970s but also has a highly melodic aspect that reveals his admiration for German heroes Michael Rother and Manuel Göttsching. Similarly Christian Becher Clausens bass playing covers a wide palette of ideas and sounds -- sometimes using the instrument as a solid groove-maker and other times as a tool for creating spacy soundscapes and drones. As a unit the three members achieve what the great power trios of the 1960s did at their most fertile: the ability to combine each aspect of the band into a whole that surpasses the sum of its parts. This is music to lose oneself in -- music to swim in." - El Paraiso.
