Artist: CAGE, JOHN
Title: The 25-Year Retrospective Concert Of The Music Of John Cage
Format: Double LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Italy
Price: $35.00
"Recorded live at Town Hall, NYC in May of 1958, this historic concert (organized by Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg) was a retrospective of Cages work from 1934 to the present. Here Cages interest in technology, Eastern philosophies, and the concept of silence and chance as related to composition come to the fore as he plays some of his most significant and controversial pieces of his career, several of which (Six Short Inventions for Seven Instruments, She Is Asleep, Music for Carillon, and Concerto for Piano and Orchestra [in which Merce Cunningham took the part of the conductor - the living clock - and David Tudor that of the pianist]), were performed here for the first time ever. This concert created quite a stir for its time, with many journalists and audience members loudly complaining this isnt music! Includes booklet with comments by Cage himself." -Doxy

Artist: CAGE/DAVID TUDOR, JOHN
Title: Indeterminacy
Format: Double LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Italy
Price: $35.00
"Subtitled: New Aspect Of Form In Instrumental And Electronic Music. Originally issued as in 1959 on Smithsonian Folkways, the initial idea for Indeterminacy came from avant-garde pianist, David Tudor, who suggested that John Cage give a lecture that was simply the telling of stories. Cage did this in Brussels in September 1958. For this lecture Cage simply stood in front of an audience and told 30 stories without musical accompaniment. Upon returning to the States in 1959, Cage decided to record the stories, but this time with the musical accompaniment of David Tudor. For the recording the two men were placed in different studios where they could not hear each other, while Tudor performed portions of Cages Concert for Piano and Orchestra (1957-58) along with pre-recorded selections of Cages Fontana Mix (Milan, 1958), and Cage simultaneously told 90 one-minute stories (sped up or slowed down according to the storys length). In a career that spanned over half a century, this album is considered to be one of Cages best. It has never been reissued on LP until now. Includes liner notes by John Cage. Gatefold sleeve." -Doxy

Artist: CARDEW, CORNELIUS
Title: We Sing For The Future & Thalmann Variations
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Russian Federation
Price: $25.00
"Recorded in 2002 by American contemporary composer and pianist, Frederic Rzewski, We Sing For The Future & Thalmann Variations are two compositions from English composer Cornelius Cardews Marxist-influenced Peoples Liberation Music period. Rzewski came to prominence in the mid-sixties in Rome as a founding member of the MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva) improvisation group (along with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum), which shared a vision with groups like Cornelius Cardews Scratch Orchestra of the same period. However, like Cardew, in the 1970s Rzewski also became interested in Communism and the power of music to express the will of the people, so it is fitting that Rzewski should chose to revisit these two compositions. 1974s Thalmann Variations was written to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Ernst Thalmann, the Secretary General of the German Communist Party, and is based on a popular German Workers Movement song (1934s Thalmann Song), while We Sing For the Future is a solo piano piece meant to convey the struggle of young people in an imperialist world. It was written in 1981, the year Cardew - who by this time was an active member of the Communist Party - was mysteriously killed in a hit and run accident in London." -Doxy.

Artist: COLTRANE, JOHN
Title: Live In Berlin November 2nd 1963
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Russian Federation
Price: $22.00
"Featuring John Coltranes classic quartet (McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones), Doxy present two live shows recorded in Stockholm (ACV 2087LP) and Berlin during the legendary 1963 European tour, which are a fairly typical example of the incredible strength of the group at the time. As with most of his live dates, Coltrane turns in extended explorations on all the selections, also leaving plenty of room for pianist Tyner to stretch out on more straightforward, but equally challenging solos. Drummer Jones matches the intensity of Coltranes solo flights with propulsive and sensitive rhythmic support, while bassist Garrison anchors the proceedings with his steady and somewhat mercurial basslines. During the period when the shows were recorded, Coltrane was playing at an amazingly high level, with masterworks like Crescent (1964) and A Love Supreme (1965) just around the corner. The blend of freedom, energy, and formality in his solos make live recordings from this time a good bet for newcomers to Coltranes work. First edition of 500 (numbered)." - Doxy.

Artist: COLTRANE, JOHN & DON CHERRY
Title: The Avant-Garde
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Russian Federation
Price: $21.00
“Recorded during the summer of 1960, this legendary LP is a milestone of free-jazz history. Joining John Coltrane and Don Cherry are essentially the rest of the members of the Ornette Coleman Quartet: Ed Blackwell (drums) and Charlie Haden (bass) on "Cherryco" and "The Blessing," as well as Percy Heath (bass) on the remaining three selections. This is fitting, as over half of the album consists of early Coleman compositions. Coltranes integration into this band works with some extraordinarily fresh results. Neither Cherry nor Coltrane makes any radical departures on this album; however, its the ability of each to complement the other both in terms of modal style and -- perhaps more importantly -- texture that lends heavily to the success of these sides.” - Doxy.

Artist: FELDMAN MORTON/EARLE BROWN
Title: Morton Feldman/Earle Brown
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Russian Federation
Price: $25.00
On 180 gram vinyl. "Finally back in print. This rare Morton Feldman/Earle Brown split LP was originally released in 1962 on the small NY-based Time Records and features Feldmans Durations I-IV on side A and Browns Hodograph I, Music for Violin, Cello and Piano and Music for Cello and Piano on side B. David Tudor is featured on piano throughout. Feldman and Brown, who were both interested in non-traditional systems of notation and improvisation, were very closely aligned with the New York School, a group of avant-garde composers in the 1950s and 60s that included John Cage, David Tudor, and Christian Wolff. These composers applied to music many of the same ideas and experiments that visual artists, like Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, were applying to painting." - Doxy.

Artist: HENRY, PIERRE
Title: Haut-Voltage/Coexistence
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Russian Federation
Price: $25.00
"Last available copies. "The 22-minute Haut-Voltage is a product of Henrys collaboration with French choreographer Maurice Béjart, recorded in 1956 for one of Bejarts stage productions, and featuring the vocals of Henry himself. By 1958, Henry had left Pierre Schaeffers RTF and had begun working in his own private studio. Coexistence, recorded in 1959, comes from this new period, when Henry had begun to realize that in order for musique concrète to evolve, it would have to begin to use electronics. Coexistence is one of Henrys first attempts at bringing the two together."" - Doxy.

Artist: HENRY, PIERRE
Title: Le Voile dOrphee
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Italy
Price: $25.00
"Pierre Henrys 1953 Veil of Orpheus is the first example of symphonic musique concrete, the use of non-traditional sources and real sounds like trains, dogs barking, footsteps, etc., in place of actual instruments and then electronically manipulating these sounds in new ways. It was originally composed for the opera Orpheus 53, which was written with movement founder Pierre Schaeffer for the Donauescliingen Festival. Despite the quantum leaps made in the field of electronics over the past 50 years, this initial experiment still manages to convey its original importance. The piece uses concrete sounds much in the same way a traditional orchestra would use individual instruments. Besides two versions of Veil of Orpheus (the original 27-minute version and the second 15-minute version used in the Maurice Bejart-Pierre Henry ballet Orpheus in 1958), there are two shorter pieces -- Entity and Spiral -- which evoke an unsettling search for meaning that is so often associated with Henrys work." -Doxy.

Title: Le Voyage
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Russian Federation
Price: $25.00
On 180 gram vinyl. "After being out of print for decades, Pierre Henrys 1962 Le Voyage is finally available again on vinyl. Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Le Voyage deals with the souls journey between death and reincarnation in the next life. Just two years prior to the recording of this album, electronic and musique concrète pioneer, Pierre Henry founded the first private electronic studio in France, realizing that, if he wanted musique concrète to evolve, he would have to begin experimenting with electronics." - Doxy

Artist: HENRY, PIERRE
Title: Musique Sans Titre/Spatiodynamisme
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Italy
Price: $25.00
"Musique Sans Titre, composed in 1951 at the Studio dessai of the RTF, was one of Henrys earliest attempts at musique concrète. Spatiodynamisme, on the other hand, was based on the 1954 recordings of a Nicolas Schöffer sound sculpture. Metallic parts, mirrors, lights and sounds emanating from a 50-meter building interacted with the environment and visitors. Henry recorded various grating and scraping sounds from the metallic sculpture and then manipulated them for this piece, which was influenced by Italian Futurist Luigi Russolos LArte Dei Rumori." -Doxy.

Artist: SATO, MASARU
Title: The Throne of Blood OST
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Russian Federation
Price: $23.00
"Masaru Sato, who worked at Toho Studios under the legendary Fumio Hayasaka, composed this chilling score for Akira Kurosawas 1957 masterpiece based heavily on traditional Japanese music, especially influenced by Noh dramas." - Doxy.

Artist: SHANKAR, RAVI
Title: Improvisations
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Russian Federation
Price: $25.00
"Some of the first eastern-jazz fusion ever recorded, finally reissued on LP. Originally recorded in 1962 for World Pacific and featuring jazz musicians Gary Peacock on bass and Bud Shank on flute, the album opens with improvisations on the theme that Shankar wrote for the 1955 Indian neorealist film Pather Panchali, by legendary Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Fire Night was another jazz-fusion piece, recorded to commemorate the fires that were burning all around LA when this session was recorded. The remaining two tracks, however, are traditional Indian pieces and serve to juxtapose the two major styles in Indian classical music. The first piece, Karnataki, is in the Carnatic (southern Indian) style, while the second, Raga Rageshri, is in the (northern) Hindustani style (which, of course, Shankars himself was a master of). Includes original liner notes. Comes on 180 gram vinyl." - Doxy.

Artist: SPENCE, JOSEPH
Title: Music Of The Bahamas: Bahaman Folk Guitar
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Italy
Price: $25.00
"Music historian Sam Charters first recorded the legendary Bahamian guitarist Joseph Spence on Andros Island in July 1958 for Folkways Records. Charters was so enthusiastic about Spences playing that the LP, released in 1959, became one of the labels first to be dedicated entirely to a single artist from outside the US. This reissue, long out of print on vinyl, includes three bonus tracks that originally appeared on a 1964 Folkways split LP featuring Spence and two other Bahamian musicians, John Roberts and Frederick McQueen." -Doxy

Title: Beton-Studie/Zeitmass Für Fünf Holzbläser/Klavierstuck XI
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Italy
Price: $25.00
"A collection of some of Karlheinz Stockhausens earliest work, including his earliest piece of musique concrete Beton-Studie (aka Etude) written by Stockhausen in 1952-53 at Pierre Schaeffers studio at the RTF in Paris. Until 1992 this piece was believed to have been lost. The LP also includes the celebrated Zeitmass (1955), and Klavierstück XI, parts I-IV (1956), both of which helped to cement Stockhausens role as one of the leading German composers of the 20th century." Zeitmass performed by Arthur Gleghorn, Donald Muggeridge, Donald Leake, Donald Christlieb and William Ulyate in Los Angeles, 1958. Klavierstück XI performed by David Tudor in Köln, 1958." -Doxy.

Title: Kontakte
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Italy
Price: $25.00
"Kontakte (1959-60), Stockhausens first piece to use both electronics and traditional instruments together, marks a turning point in his career, when his music was beginning to show the influences of American avant-garde jazz and composers like John Cage. In Kontakte live musicians play alongside a tape recording of percussion sounds that have been altered by different electronic devices (i.e. a ring modulator or a reverberator). Stockhausen wanted the musicians to improvise over the prepared tape, but the musicians were at such a loss that Stockhausen eventually had to score the instrumental parts as well. Performed by Christoph Caskel, David Tudor, Gottfried Michael Koenig and Stockhausen in Köln, 1960." -Doxy.

Title: Mantra
Format: Double LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Italy
Price: $35.00
"Composed in 1970, Stockhausens Mantra is a duet for piano written for the Donaueschingen Festival. It is Stockhausens first completely scored piece after a long string of largely improvised compositions. Here both pianists play ring-modulated pianos, cymbals, and a wood block. One player is also controlling a recording of Morse code. The purpose of this composition was to explore the idea of a musical mantra. The repetition of sounds are intended to place both the audience and the musicians themselves into an altered state of consciousness, thus changing the concert performance into an interactive event where the composer and listener are equals." - Doxy. Limited, numbered edition of 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl.

Title: Studie I & II/Gesang Der Jünglinge
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Italy
Price: $25.00
"Studie I (1953), Studie II (1954), Gesang Der Jünglinge (1956) and Zyklus für zwei Schlagzeugern (1960). Performed by David Tudor, Christoph Caskel, Gottfried Michael Koenig and Stockhausen. "A collection of Stockhausen s most important works from the 1950s, particularly Gesang der Junglinge (Song of the Youths) 1955-56, probably the most iconic piece of electronic music ever written. Only because of Stockhausens complete understanding of electronic equipment, along with his creative genius, was he able to produce this masterwork, the first piece of music to unify vocals and electronics." -Doxy.

Title: Harry Smiths Complete Anthology Of American Folk Music
Format: 8 LP Box Set
Label: Doxy
Country: Italy
Price: $174.00
"Now for the first time ever all together on vinyl a complete box set: 4 double LPs featuring the 3 original double LP volumes (Ballads, Social Music, Songs) along with the great LOST Country Music & Bluegrass double LP that remained unissued for almost 50 years. Compiled by Harry Smith contemporaneously with the first three volumes (which were originally released in 1952), it includes tracks by the Monroe Bros., Carter Family, Robert Johnson, Bukka White, Lead Belly, Uncle Dave Macon and Sleepy John Estes and more! The box set is actually not a box, but is modelled after the old 78 rpm multiple record storage sleeve, where the albums are stored in sleeves that are pages in a book. The importance of Harry Smiths work can not be overstated. Not only did he single-handedly save much of American folk music from extinction, but when he handed his record collection over to Smithsonian folkways in 1952, he opened the floodgates for the American folk revival of the following decade. Not since John and Alan Lomax had anyone paid so much attention to saving the American folk song from extinction, but unlike the Lomaxes, Smith was not a government worker armed with a tape recorder, he was just a guy from Portland, Oregon armed with a love of music and an insatiable curiosity. So, when the U.S. Armed Forces began melting down old records to be used as shellac during WWII, Smith kicked into high gear, buying up as many old 78s from the 20s and 30s as he could find. Much of the music found here then comes from a time before television -- arm-in-arm with rock & roll -- began beaming its über-culture into every household in America, erasing much of what had grown up locally. Prior to WWII, America was in many ways no more than a patchwork of territories, with distinct local cultures and musical traditions reaching both far into the immigrant past of each areas inhabitants, but also into a future firmly rooted in the newness and adventure (as well as hardships) of life on this new continent." -Doxy

Artist: VARESE, EDGAR
Title: Early Works
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Italy
Price: $25.00
"The French-born Edgar Varese (1883-1965), believed music to be both an art and a science. His pioneering use of electronic instruments like the theremin, along with his theory of organized sound has earned him the impressive title of Father of Electronic Music. Varese spent the early twenties as a starving composer in NYC, writing works like the percussionless Octandre and Integrales, his first piece to use the term spatial music. Upon returning to Paris in 1928, he composed the celebrated Ionisation, the first piece ever written for an entirely percussion ensemble (thirteen percussionists and forty instruments). His 1936 piece, Density 21.5, written for solo flute for the premiere of George Barreres new platinum flute, is one of the great masterpieces for unaccompanied flute. It is also one of the only compositions written by Varese during this decade. His next major work, Deserts, was in fact not written until 1950. It was the first piece ever written for magnetic tape and orchestra and was meant to be the soundtrack to a film which would juxtapose images of actual deserts with images from past wars (the great deserts of civilization)." Featured works: Integrales, Octandre (performed by New York Wind Ensemble, Juilliard Percussion Orchestra); Ionisation (Juilliard Percussion Orchestra); Density 21.5 (Rene Le Roy); Interpolation I, II, III (Varese)." -Doxy.

Title: Le Concerts du Domaine Musical 1956
Format: LP
Label: Doxy
Country: Russian Federation
Price: $25.00
"Doxy presents a reissue of Les Concerts du Domaine Musical, originally released by the French label Vega in 1956. Le Domaine Musical was a concert society established by Pierre Boulez in Paris, which was active from 1954 to 1973. Boulez intended to provide opportunities for new music, after a general musical migration from Germany and Austria to Paris in the wake of those countries legacy of war-torn decades without music. Le Domaine Musical created an exciting milieu in which the best and most innovative in music and other arts could congregate: it was a springboard for creativity, stimulating new ideas and alliances. Jean Cocteau attended the first concert, resplendent in flowing cape. Through these circles musicians and composers like Carter, Stockhausen, Berio, Messiaen, Nono, Webern, Cage, and Varese came together. Le Domaine Musical gave rise to a seminal phase in the growth of post-war music. Its importance cant be overestimated. Les Concerts du Domaine Musical 1956 includes compositions by Webern, Nono, Stockhausen, and Boulez, with a vocal performance from Jeanne Hericard." - Doxy.
