Artist: ARCHETTI, LUIGI
Title: Null I-VII
Format: 7 CD Box
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $50.00
"Epic in scale, static, timbre, and stillness, Null is a vast and profound musical project that Luigi Archetti has been pursuing over a long period. His musical research is not about "null" (the German word for "zero") as a mathematical object, as a real number. Instead, the term "null" is used here as a metaphor to describe a state of pausing and anticipatory waiting. The music of Null is characterized by static sounds, drones, and their overlapping and layering. The sound surfaces turn into acoustic "sluggish material" which flows slowly through time and gradually transforms itself. It is a constant gliding, a constant mutation of sound structures. Attempts to discover clearly defined melodies, rhythmically ordered structures, or even beats are to no avail. A universe of sound particles diffuses in the foreground of the musical atmosphere, whereby the sounds do not provide any reference whatsoever to a possible location. All the sounds in Null are sourced from e-guitars, which are in part extensively defamiliarized through digitalization and thereby redefined. The e-guitars (frequently in scordatura tuning) are used to this end as suppliers of sound. The acoustic sedimentation of the diverse sounds and sound structures results in a dense and filigreed sound fabric which develops a pull-effect on the listeners. It is an invitation to travel in uncharted regions, a hypnotically captivating journey through timeless and minimal acoustic events. Null I-VII, presented in a special CD slipcase box, collects all seven CDs also released as Null (ZEITC 003CD, 2010), Null II/Null III (ZEITC 009CD, 2012), and Null IV-VII (ZEITC 018-19CD, 2015)." - Die Schachtel.

Artist: ARCHETTI, LUIGI
Title: Null II/Null III
Format: Double CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $21.00
"Null II and Null III are the second and third part of Italian/Swiss composer Luigi Archettis massive electronic work on the theme of "nothing" ("Null"), whose first part saw the light with the 2010 Die Schachtel "Null" edition in the ZeitComposers series (ZEITC 003CD). Within these pieces, Archettis thick sound-drones border on the edge of tonality as their many layers develop with a sort of "geological" pace. The work is in fact intended as musical research on the "interior" of sound, obtained by large masses of sound punctuated by seemingly minimalistic details. The mastery of Luigi Archetti conducts the listener deeply inside the musical event, while at the same time introducing a model, just like the traces of a gold seam in rocks, which the listener can follow and frequently re-encounter over the 140 minutes in which the music unfolds. The result is a trance-inducing sense of slow-motion and even stillness, alternating with subtle changes often obtained only by tiny, almost "invisible" variables. Null is a vast and profound place where perception is confronted with a stream of slow-developing, sometime "still" sound. Null II and Null III will certainly appeal to fans of Eliane Radigue, Thomas Köner and long and sustained drone electronic music in general." -Die Shcachtel.

Artist: ARKE SINTH
Title: s/t
Format: LP
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $29.00
"Studio and live recordings, May/June 1973. Arke Sinth documents the brief and intense life of a group formed at the beginning of the 1970s within the fertile and stimulating cultural environment of the town of Padua (Italy), where electroacoustic and computer music pioneer Teresa Rampazzi had started, a few years earlier, the Nuove Proposte Sonore (New Sound Proposals) Group. Arke Sinth was a group of four young musicians and artists, who decided to perform their own music, an experimental venture into collective composition and unusual timbre associations, with possibly no references whatsoever to previously existing music genres. The rigorous music of Arke Sinth gave a sonic body to meticulously planned graphic scores and at times was associated with visuals created by one of the members of the group, Michele Sambin (one of the first Italian experimental video-artists). Arke Sinth also tried to closely link collective composition and performance, making also use of improvisational elements but refusing the premises of the American live electronics experiences, for which composition was simply the "trigger" of an almost immutably informal and/or automatic process (David Tudor, David Behrman, Alvin Lucier), or alternatively it was "dissolved" into free improvisation (MEV). Together with Michele Sambin on cello and saxophones, were his brother Marco, an accomplished saxophone player, Giovanni De Poli on EMS Synthi A and Alvise Vidolin on electronic organ and mixing. De Poli and Vidolin at that time were both pupils of Teresa Rampazzi, and shortly after the experience of Arke Sinth were involved in the foundation of the Computer Music Center of the University of Padua. Deluxe silver cover with silver foil design. Custom inner sleeve and four-page booklet in English and Italian. Edition of 400." - Die Schactel.

Artist: ART FLEURY
Title: I Luoghi Del Potere
Format: CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $25.00
"Art Fleury was born in Brescia, Northern Italy, in the mid-70s. They were still in their teens when they had the opportunity to open for the group Area at the famous Parco Lambro Festival in Milan (1976), in front of fifty thousand people. In the following years they extensively toured and played with Henry Cow, and in 1980 they were finally able to produce and release their first record, I Luoghi del Potere (The places of power), which they started recording in 1977. Superficially (or intentionally) included in the prog genre, I Luoghi del Potere (originally conceived as the soundtrack of an imaginary movie), is a very personal and radical experience, at times recalling Fausts free-form Kraut riffing, or the industrial sound collages of Nurse With Wound. The music is articulated through an outstanding dynamic juxtaposition of instrumental parts, with frequent structural and harmonic fragmentations, and a diverse array of unusual sound elements: from a sort of brass-band progression to radio frequencies, from cacophonic intermezzos to expressionist tape-collage techniques. Through this free flow of sounds, only apparently casual, the group wanted to expose the alienation, the folly, the hopes and fears of their times, through a creative act that pushed to the limits their expressive means." - Die Schachtel.

Artist: BACHI DA PIETRA
Title: Non Io
Format: CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $17.50
"Bachi da Pietra (The stone worms) is a two-men band whose dark and resonating music wraps around tunes of desolate candor and lyrics (in Italian) as dark and imaginative as broken love can be. A relentless drumming hovers over a huge wash of ride cymbal and a deep, plaintive voice, which is able to capture sadness, anger and yearning. The entire album is a visceral emotional journey: the dissonant blues-based songs develop around the steady drone of the singers voice, a trance-inducing vocal presence singing of grim meditations on life that are crafted and performed with disarming sincerity. Just like the mysterious and enigmatic characters that orbited their doom-laden, disturbing world, Bachi da Pietra is an unpredictable band that leaves the listeners feeling vulnerable, moved, and sometimes totally spaced-out." - Die Schachtel.

Artist: BERTONCINI, MARIO
Title: Arpe Eolie
Format: LP
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $29.00
"Arpe Eolie is the first ever vinyl release of the works by Italian maestro Mario Bertoncini, relentless experimental composer, philosopher, artist and builder of sounds. The LP presents a selection of his compositions for Aeolian constructions: in the early 70s he started to produce sound aggregates, true "sound sculptures" based on the Aeolian sound principle. Amongst his more spectacular installations were "Vele", a massive Aeolian harp (more than seven meters high); "Venti" (winds), for 20 Aeolian sound generators and 40 performers; and "Chanson Pour Instrument À Vent", an assemblage for Aeolian harps, Aeolian gongs, and one performer. By their very nature these sound objects ("sound sculptures" that liberate the concept of sound form from time development) convey a sense of natural sounds beyond the grasp of composition and musician. Bertoncinis self-built harps and gongs are excited by blows of compressed air, or by the composers own breath, resulting in a musical blueprint that takes minimalist drone to a massive scale: the music unleashes itself. Theres no sense of a composers hand present. If at superficial levels they may sound like electronic music (long drones and swooshes of otherworldly sounds), at a close listening they reveal the intensity of a pure sound of air, far removed from both any artificial or measurable principle as well as from any casual or chance method of composition. Deluxe silver cover with silver foil design. Custom inner sleeve and four-page booklet in English and Italian. Edition of 400." - Die Schachtel.

Title: Arpe Eolie and Other Useless Things
Format: Book/CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $48.00
"Deluxe silver CD box, silver-foil design complete with a 31-page booklet in Italian and English. English/Italian 196-pages book, 26 black and white photos, matte white cardboard cover with flaps, silver design. "One of the most adventurous composers and performers of the Italian avant garde scene, member of the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, great performer of the music of John Cage, Bertoncini started in the early 70s to design and build incredibly complex and visually fascinating sound sculptures based on the aeolian sound principle. Amongst his more spectacular installations there were Vele, a massive Aeolian harp (more than 7 meters high); Venti (winds), for 20 Aeolian sound generators and 40 performers; and Chanson pour Instruments à Vent, an assemblage for Aeolian harps, Aeolian gongs, and one performer. His self-built harps and gongs are excited by blows of compressed air, or by the composers own breath, and the resulting sound is amplified through contact microphones. If at superficial levels they may sound like electronic music (long drones and swooshes of otherwordly sounds), at a close listening they reveal the intensity of a the pure and analogic sound of air, far removed from both any artificial or measurable principle as well as from any casual or chance method of composition, In fact, all the pieces are carefully composed and even notated. The CD presents the complete series of his works for Aeolian harps, from 1973 to more recent days. The accompanying 196-page book, in both English and Italian and rich with photos, is a rather profound dissertation on the Aeolian harps, their generation and meaning, as well as on experimental sound and avant-garde music in general. Written by the composer in the form of a Platonic dialog (between an old and rather bitter master and his young enthusiastic pupil), the book not only conveys a wealth of information on its subject matter, but it also renders perfectly the voice full of wit of one of the most personal and uncompromising composers of the present times." - Die Schachtel

Title: Exposé
Format: CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $17.50
"Based on a series of 33 musical ideas written, printed, framed and exposed in a recent installation in Milan, Exposé is the first of a new cycle of works as well as the result of Alessandro Bosettis fascination with speech loops. The mesmerizing voice of Audrey Chen, endlessly repeating the same sentence over the entire duration of each piece, is full of musical nuances, and it rewards close attention. The result is a weird and fascinating experience, that takes the listener through a surreal sonic space. The misty, microtonal electronics and instrumental layers are arranged and recorded in an extremely precise fashion. The slowly shifting speech-derived rhythmical patterns provide a subtle, low-key backdrop to the vocal parts, perhaps suggesting the option of adopting an ambient-like listening strategy, while at the same time the use of headphones will enhance the works strangely compelling blend of the surreal and hypnotic." - Die Schachtel.

Title: Exposé + Art
Format: CD/Art
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $76.00

Title: Chamber Rites
Format: CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $18.00
"Chamber Rites is an encounter based on sharing emotions, on audio-visual exchange, on the practice of radical improvisation, characterized by a location or context, of which we define a part of its mobile architecture. Ours is a ritual whose coordinates -- spatial, temporal and performative -- are traced by signs, at the same time enigmatic and visible, sedimented in time" --Fabrizio Casti and Elio Martusciello, 2015. Fabrizio Casti: prepared piano; Elio Martusciello, computer. Fabrizio Casti is an Italian experimental music composer operating in both acoustic and electroacoustic improvisation, and the author of vocal, instrumental, chamber, and symphonic works for instruments and live electronics. He teaches Elements of Music Composition and Analysis at the State Music Conservatory of Cagliari, Italy, is Artistic Director of Spaziomusica, and is on the board of SpaziomusicaRicerca, Cagliari. Both associations conduct musical research and promote composition of contemporary and experimental music. His works have been published by RaiTrade, Ricordi, and Ut Orpheus and recorded by ECM, Stradivarius, LIMEN, Ricordi-Nuova Fonit Cetra, Warsaw Autumn, and Spaziomusica. Elio Martusciello is an Italian electroacoustic and experimental music composer, musician, and visual artist. He teaches electronic music at the Naples Conservatory of Music, Italy. He studied photography with Mimmo Jodice and visual arts with Carlo Alfano, Armando de Stefano, and Rosa Panaro. His aesthetics are inspired by acousmatics, but he also composes for instruments and live electronics and operates in installation art, multimedia, visual arts, and electroacoustic improvisation. His works have been recorded by Recommended Records, Staalplaat, Die Schachtel, Ambiances Magnétiques, FMP, GMEM, Institut International de Musique Electroacoustique de Bourges, and others." - Die Schachtel.

Artist: CHIARI/DANIELE LOMBARDI, GIUSEPPE
Title: +/-
Format: LP + CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $60.00
"LP+CD special limited edition release by Fluxus composer Giuseppe Chiari and Futurist pianist Daniele Lombardi. Each LP is hand-numbered, and contains two art prints by Giuseppe Chiari, housed in a very original fold-out cover. The CD is hand-numbered and signed by Daniele Lombardi. The total selling copies of the bundle edition are limited to 130. Giuseppe Chiari was one of the leading names associated first with Fluxus (being the only Italian member of the interdisciplinary art group since 1962) and later with conceptual and performance art as well as sound art. Coming from a background of different disciplines, he established new theoretical and practical standpoints in relation to music and art: his approach was always irreverent, walking the tightrope between to do or not to do, to say or not to say, while continually challenging the limits of language. The Die Schachtel vinyl LP (titled +/-) features some of his previously-unreleased and most intense pieces for piano, the musical instrument par excellence and emblem of conformist sound with which Giuseppe Chiari has a love-hate relationship, bestowing on it equal measures of ridicule and praise. It is also an amazing document of his last concert, with Frederic Rzewski (playing the 1964 groundbreaking piece "La Strada"), Giancarlo Cardini, Daniele Lombardi and Giuseppe Chiari himself. The limited CD edition by Daniele Lombardi, published on the occasion of his solo exhibition at MUDIma Foundation in Milan (2008), is the reissue of a 1978 piano sound exploration entitled Costellazione, based upon a map of sky constellations, planned as the first step in a large work focused on the exposition and "performance" of constellations maps, planetaria and maps of the heavens. It is a perfect counterpoint to the Chiari Edition, and it is housed in a custom-made, silk-screened natural cardboard case, inserted in the fold-out cover together with the LP. " - Die Schachtel.

Artist: CHRISTA PFANGEN
Title: Watch Me Getting Back The End
Format: CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $17.50
"Christa Pfangen are Andrea Belfi and Mattia Coletti. The name is an homage to Nico, although the music has obviously no relation with the icon of the New York avant garde scene. They belong to the new electroacoustic/improv/avant-rock scene which is taking shape in Italy and includes such names as 3/4 Had Been Eliminated, Valerio Tricoli, ÿ, Stefano Pilia and others. Working with percussion, treated guitar and an array of different objects and noises, they have given birth to a dynamic work of great beauty and reverberating rhythms, oscillating between avant-folk and electroacoustic music." - Die Schachtel.

Artist: CILIO, LUCIANO
Title: DellUniverso Assente
Format: CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $21.00
"The critically-acclaimed Delluniverso Assente is finally made available again in a stunning CD edition. The complete works composed by legendary Neapolitan composer and musician Luciano Cilio are now digitally restored and include a striking set of piano-based unedited pieces transcribed and played by the composer Girolamo De Simone, curator of the edition and acclaimed interpreter, who is also the man responsible for the rediscovery of the work of Luciano Cilio. Dell Universo Assente, originally released by Die Schachtel in 2007 and sold out in a few months, represents a truly unique approach to music-making where each instrument and each sound are given ample time and space to develop. For the recording sessions leading to this remarkable work, Cilio took up a role as multi-instrumentalist, performing on piano, guitar, flute, bass and mandola, also joined by musicians coming from different experiences and areas, who supply strings, extra woodwind and percussion. Almost impossible to define, the all-acoustic music of Cilio occupies a space between the devotional music of Popol Vuhs Florian Fricke and the deep spiritual places of what would later be called holy minimalism (without any of the religious intents of the aforementioned references), with a surprising anticipation of the crystalline sparseness of pieces like "Fur Alina" by Arvo Pärt, and a feeling of intense suspension of time that can be associated to some of the most intimate compositions of Ligeti or Feldman, yet maintaining a definite position outside the contemporary music of serial and academic inspiration. "These recordings sound as they feel -- self-contained, introspective, and determined. You can feel in the music a sort of necessity that can be rarely found, as in Bill Fays Time of the Last Persecution, or in Nick Drakes Pink Moon: this enormous weight that is bearing on its creators, the absolute need to exorcize it from their lives, a moment in time where you are invited to hear artists truly in contact with their existence. Luciano Cilio holds that moment in time, an authentic emotional testament, something to be cherished," writes Jim ORourke in his inspiring liner-notes. Born in Naples in 1950, Luciano Cilio had joined his university studies in architecture and scenography to music, collaborating in the 60s and 70s with several non-conventional musicians (such as Alan Sorrenti and Shawn Phillips), developing surprising intuitions about the relationship between gesture, words and music. Sitar and guitar virtuoso, excellent pianist, Luciano Cilio was "essentially self-taught concerning music composition," and focused his research on long, sustained sounds, on the sound in its primary and internal meaning, at the outset on the melodic, rhythmic and harmonic entities, to "re-enter the sound, hold it, hold it... and finally let it go." His short yet intense career officially began in 1977 with the publication of a full-length album titled Dialoghi del presente (entirely included on this release along with extra tracks), composed between the end of the 60s and early 70s. The album, released in 1977, went almost unnoticed and was soon forgotten, and that influenced deeply the complex personality of the composer. Unexpectedly, in 1983, he committed suicide, leaving this unique gem as a testimony of a genius work. "Most records create an imagined world, a place between author and audience, a neutral ground where you are expected to meet; but on these special occasions, you can feel as if you are listening in on a private conversation, overheard discreetly, but clearly. This record is not just a collection of musical pictures, but a large canvas painted with the air it was made in, like a private room never to be visited again, but remembered vividly when something like the way light hits a room or the smell of damp cinders brings it all back with overwhelming vividness. Cilio holds that moment in time, an authentic emotional testament, something to be cherished." -Jim ORourke.

Artist: CLEMENTI, ALDO
Title: Punctum Contra Punctum
Format: CD Box Set
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $20.00
"Aldo Clementi marks out the distance with an absolute refusal to provide narratives, whether of tension resolved, or simply of that logically unending succession of states of being so dear to many of his contemporaries. His materials, whether gathered from a tonal past, generated as a jeu desprìt from the names of dedicatees, or produced by a purely abstract process, are projected into a rotational steady state that has no logical end or beginning." - David Osmond-Smith, 2005. "On the occasion of his 80th birthday, Die Schachtel is proud to present "Punctum Contra Punctum", a deluxe compact disc box dedicated to Aldo Clementi, one of the most important figures of Italian music of the 20th Century. Born in Sicily in 1925, he studied piano and later composition under the guidance of teachers such as Goffredo Petrassi and Bruno Maderna, who also introduced him to electronic music at the RAI Studio of Phonology in Milan. Like many composers of the period, he employed serial technique early in his work, to abandon it later on in favor of a very personal, ingenious and unique method for creating new music. Blessed with extraordinary skills of invention and assimilation, Clementi may be the one living composer for whom "genius" is not too strong a word. His musical language is extremely articulate and profound, resulting in a fascination with obsessive repetitions, collages, canons, and incredibly complex rhythmic textures which have to be heard to be believed. At the same time his music maintains to stay fresh, dynamic and highly enjoyable. A must-have for all the modern music lovers, and a great discovery for the most adventourous and prepared listener. Deluxe white and silver-foil design CD-box edition, complete with a lovingly designed 64-page booklet in English and Italian." - Die Schachtel.

Title: Dimensioni

Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $18.00
“Osvaldo Coluccino follows his well-received 2010 contribution to Die Schachtels Zeit Composer Series, Neuma Q (ZEITC 004CD), with a collection of his early (1997-2007) electroacoustic pieces. From the dark drones of "Dimensioni" (interspersed with the treated voice of Jacques Lacan), to the treated percussions of "Nellattimo," to the acousmatic brilliance of "Dal margine," this CD is a journey into the brilliant head and the complex soul of one of the most interesting Italian contemporary composers, whose music is always on the edge, stretched between a flight toward a distant and bright horizon and a dive into the darkest obscurity. Osvaldo Coluccino (b. 1963) is a composer and poet. His compositions have been commissioned by Venice Biennale, Milano Musica, RAI National Symphony Orchestra, and others, and have been performed in several festivals of classical and contemporary music. Monographic CDs have been released by Neos, Col Legno, Another Timbre, Rai Trade, and Due Punti. His works have been performed by many ensembles (including Ensemble Recherche and Nieuw Ensemble) and by several conductors and soloists. He has composed music since 1979, and has published several volumes of poetry since the early 90s.” - Die Schachtel.

Title: Under the Fig Tree
Format: LP
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $28.00
"Two masterpieces of the early 70s by Alvin Curran, released by Die Schachtel for the first time ever. Using VCS3 live electronics and environmental sounds, Alvin Curran created a hypnotic and meditative transcendency of minimalist beauty. Limited deluxe vinyl LP edition." - FE. "The two works presented here are seminal pieces of two genres from which a great part of my musical practice springs, and to this day, continues to evolve from. Under The Fig Tree is, in fact, the realization of one monophonic piece contained in my well known early collection of single line melodic compositions entitled Music For Every Occasion. The version I present here was originally made for a performance of trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini, playing against the recording. It is realized by myself playing a VCS3 (Putney) synthesizer, one of the first in a famous line of portable electronic synthesizers from the early 70s. Notable are electronically produced timbres which approximate acoustic flutes, clarinets, trombones and tubas -- long before the availability of multi-track tape machines, these tracks were recorded on multiple Revox tape recorders and mixed on a custom-made mixer. The Magic Carpet is, remarkably, my first sound installation, long before that phrase came into our daily vocabularies. It was inspired by a project of my dear friend and sculptor Paul Klerr -- an American with Italian-Jewish roots, who lives in Rome. He had this brilliant idea to fill a gallery with steel and gut wires, to which I suggested that he was actually building a fantastic musical instrument which could even be played by the visiting public -- so my intervention in this spontaneous collaboration was to figure out how to amplify this jungle of long steel wires -- which I did with simple contact microphones placed at various connecting points; and further adding a vertical element of sounding glass chimes plus aluminum and brass tubing and occasionally placed metal chimes." -Alvin Curran

Title: Arco
Format: LP
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $27.00
2016 repress. "Starting with this release (despite the fact that its catalog number numerically precedes ZEITC 017CD), Die Schachtel switches its Zeit Composers series to the vinyl format and begins opening up to international artists besides the usual Italian suspects. This LP features the collaborative effort of Belgium-based composer Giovanni di Domenico (of Italian origins) and avant-everything master Jim ORourke. A long composition for strings and electronics, Arco is a piece for sustained tones and drones, vividly immersive and almost physical. The subtly shifting tones, the way the overtones interact with each other, the evolution of the piece, are all impeccable, much in the vein of acclaimed composers like Catherine Christer Hennix, Éliane Radigue, and David Behrman, although with a "warmer" soul. It explores the antinomy between stillness and movement, building toward a hypnotic (and rewarding) aural experience. In Giovanni di Domenicos words: "Arco is born out of two necessities, strongly interrelated: 1) creating a sonic space where the concept of waiting (patience?) can turn into form, and 2) doing this together with Jim ORourke, a musician who finds in form and its use his true greatness; The structure of the composition is quite simple: it is based on a cell of four repeated notes (the DNA of the piece), forming a melodic/harmonic texture which slowly freezes into suspended, levitating chords, in which the passing of time itself becomes a sort of harmonic extension, and in which the strings and the splendidly rich sonic palette of the electronics fuse into the true essence of Form." Each LP contains a 90x30cm-long tri-folded silver-and-black offset art print designed by Dinamomilano. Edition of 350. Giovanni di Domenico: string score; Jim ORourke: electronics. Ananta Roosens and Benoit Leseure: violins; Nicole Miller and Jef Durdu: violas; Marine Horbaczewski and Jean-Philippe Feiss: cellos." - Die Schachtel.

Artist: DI SCIPIO/JOHN CAGE, AGOSTINO
Title: Musical Sculptures and Other Devices
Format: CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $18.00
“A sonic journey into John Cage and surroundings by renowned Italian composer Agostino di Scipio and his talented students. On December 9th, 2012, upon invitation from the Associazione Scarlatti, Agostino di Scipio and his students at the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory gave a performance of a very rare piece -- John Cages Sculptures Musicales. The performance was planned out by Dario Sanfilippo, based on the few annotations left by Cage (which in turn followed an idea Cage took from Marcel Duchamp): the "musical sculptures" are sound blocks shaped by either electronic or acoustic instruments, sound blocks that should stay flat and stable in longer or shorter spans of time -- "constant sounds in a single envelope" -- as Cage wrote. The idea for this particular performance was to build prolonged sound textures separated by silent pauses, of duration roughly proportional to the loudness of the textures. The means to achieve that, however, were rather unstable and precarious in their sonic behavior: they included a self-built analog synth (Stefano Silvestri), a set of recycled mechanical objects and electronic circuits making up a kind of hybrid feedback network (Salvatore Carannante), an intricate computer patch of largely unpredictable -- but not random -- behavior (Dario Sanfilippo) and a "prepared cello" (Chiara Mallozzi). The sounds made with these means, as the piece was performed, are connoted by a tension due to the continuing attempt of the four performers to keep the sound level constant: not an easy task, given the idiosyncrasiescratic sound generation technologies involved, all of which remain critically sensitive to slight internal imperfections (e.g. Stefanos synth) or to the events in the surrounding environment (e.g. Salvatores recycled feedback devices), and given that the four performers were sitting far from one another, at the four angles of a large cave (at the St. Elmo castle, in Naples). What is peculiar, upon listening, is this uncertain stasis, this insecure and dynamic balance among components, a local instability contrasting with the larger framework consisting of few monolithic elements. Its always the case, with Cages work, that what seems to suggest a rather contemplative and ecstatic perspective, in actuality requires an incessant struggle, a demanding commitment and an enduring care for actions pursued in the moment. Also features other compositions from Stefano Silvestri and Salvatore Carannante, as well as a piece from Dario Sanfilippo.” - Die Schachtel.

Artist: ENSEMBLE DISSONANZEN
Title: Dissonanzen
Format: 5 CD Box
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $50.00
"When the Ensemble Dissonanzen asked Die Schachtel in 2013 to publish a massive retrospective edition of some of their most representative works to celebrate their 20th anniversary, the label knew it would be a challenge. They were -- and still are -- quite conscious of the fact that the work of an all-acoustic New Music ensemble with a heavy dose of improvisation may appear out of place within the more electronic/experimental Die Schachtel catalog, but then they listened to the music -- and all of a sudden they were glad to embark on the operation. Dissonanzen, born in Naples in 1993, is one of the most reputed and internationally-acclaimed Italian New Music ensembles. They have always carried out important work on the modern and contemporary repertoire, performing pieces by composers such as Berio, Cage, Crumb, Dallapiccola, Feldman, Henze, Ives, Kagel, Maderna, Petrassi, Rzewski, Scelsi and Stockhausen, to name a few. They regularly collaborate with many musicians, composers and artists within the framework of the concert series of the Associazione Dissonanzen. The recordings contained in this 5CD box set, curated by Ciro Longobardi and Tommaso Rossi, present the most important steps in their life, covering a period of about six years (from 2003 to 2009) and shedding a significant light on their relationship with improvisation, which spans over a wide variety of productions, from repertoire to sheer improvisation to multimedia projects (as in the case of the "post-scoring" of the Man Ray movies). The close working relationship between the players, and the emphasis placed on extremely subtle investigations of their instruments, makes these recordings an invaluable document of the life of one of the most creative musical experiences emerging from Italy, as well as an immersive and rewarding listening experience. From the liner notes: "The aesthetical key of our work consists in the meeting of different personalities, coming from diverse musical trajectories. The Ensemble Dissonanzen has always carried out very serious work on the modern and contemporary written repertoire, while engaging with various possibilities in the area of improvisation. We have always experimented in new directions, also through our collaboration with outstanding guest artists belonging to different musical areas (Cristina Zavalloni, Marc Ribot, Michel Godard, Markus Stockhausen, Adam Rudolph, Alvin Curran, Stefano Scodanibbio, etc.)." - Die Schachtel.

"A comprehensive guide to the core recordings of one of the most visionary and inspiring, subversive and radical musicians from Italy, this 2CD box deluxe edition captures Pietro Grossis original vision, presenting a wide selection of his studio early recordings, beautifully remastered to preserve the enduring quality. Pietro Grossi used to playfully define himself as pigro (trans. "lazy"), but he wasnt lazy at all! Few musicians have been working everyday at such a cracking pace, creating, teaching and writing -- and when we listen to his music, we should bear in mind how this complex figure of musician, cellist and composer, and also visual artist, has developed creative thinking in a path where a blend of very different aspects organically cohabited. Since the late 50s, Grossi was convinced of the potential of the "new sound" and was totally obsessed with pioneering it, to the point where he would found the S 2F M (Studio di Fonologia Musicale di Firenze) in 1963 -- which made its headquarters in Florence at the Conservatorio, and then in his apartment -- spending days and nights on end splicing tapes and working with various modified machines to create his abstract soundscapes. The two CDs feature his first analogical electronic music, as well as some S 2F M studio works by colleagues such as Vittorio Gelmetti, Gruppo NPS (with Teresa Rampazzi) and Albert Mayr, while the second disc is focused on the prototype computer-generated sound synthesis." -Die Schachtel

Standard LP version. Includes five LPs, DVD, and book; Edition of 500. "The year 2007 saw one of the most remarkable findings in the long treasure-hunting history of Die Schachtel: the complete set of recordings of the early manifestation (1967-1969) of one of the most legendary improv group of all time, the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. Rescued by the private archives of Walter Branchi, one of the original founding members -- alongside Franco Evangelisti, Ennio Morricone, Ivan Vandor, Roland Kayn, Egisto Macchi, Mario Bertoncini, and John Heineman -- the tapes were then restored in their entirety. Only a part of them were published in a CD-only boxset in an edition of 500, titled Azioni 1967-1969, which also featured a DVD with the original film Nuova Consonanza shot by Theo Gallher during the rehearsal and concert that the group held on March 19th and 20th, 1967, at the Galleria darte Moderna in Rome. Spanning from free-jazz to total abstract noise to wild electronic sounds, their music was -- and remains -- one of the most dynamic, original, and uncompromising expression of a period defined by intense experimentation and musical bravery, anticipating experiments to come in years following. Or, to put it simple, "They were utterly unique," as per the words that John Zorn, who expressively wrote for this edition. Title: Nuove Proposte Sonore 1965-1972
Format: LP
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $31.00
"The NPS -- Nuove Proposte Sonore (trans. "New Sound Proposals") group was founded in Padua (Italy) in 1964 by the composer Teresa Rampazzi, together with the visual artist Ennio Chiggio. Working with analogical devices, they produced some of the most compelling electronic music of the period, and they soon became one of the most reputed electronic music centers in Italy, together with the S 2 FM by Pietro Grossi in Florence and the SMET by Enore Zaffiri in Turin. With the departure of Chiggio, the years 1969-1970 transformed it into a female-only collective (Teresa Rampazzi, Serenella Marega and Patrizia Gracis). The two periods were characterized by different instrumentation, and it is surprising how they were able to achieve great results with some simple means -- at least in the beginning. In the first period, they used a couple of two-track tape recorders (Sony 777 and Sony 521), an EICO low-frequency generator, a radio station to produce long wavelength frequencies, a mixer, an oscillator, a Revox, and a self-built loudspeaker. They had to use the stairwell as an echo chamber. In the second one, when the studio was more established, they had six manually-controlled oscillators as well as six modulated ones, a white noise generator, an octave-band filter and a variable one, an amplitude modulator, a noteswitch, a reverb, a 10-channel mixer, a unit for audio signal routing, four tape recorders, a stereo sound system and a frequency meter (during the last years they also bought a 2500 ARP synthesizer). This deluxe edition presents the groups compositions for the first time ever. The LP comes in a silver-foil design, including a booklet in Italian and English in an edition of 300 copies." - Die Schachtel.

With Electronica Viva members Alvin Curran, M. Hirayama, W. Branchi. "Die Schachtel is proud to present two brand new releases, both dedicated to Domenico Guaccero, an important Italian composer/musician of the 60s, very active in the fields of avant garde, electronic and aleatory music. The "ROT" LP edition is the 4th in the "metallic" series, dedicated to the masters of Italian electronic music, and it will soon be followed by a great and unpublished work by Marino Zuccheri. With the great Alvin Curran at the synth, "ROT" is a lost gem of raw musical power, one of the most exciting pieces of electroacoustic music around." "This provocative and very advanced multi-media work, was conceived from the beginning to include purely notated music, improvised music, and recorded music on tape which the composer could manipulate, redesign and remix (long before that concept existed) and create yet another layer, or sonic strata with those sounds." (Alvin Curran). "The electroacoustic parts of Rot are now available for the first time ever in a limited vinyl LP edition (350 copies), with a gatefold wallet cover, silver foil design on silver, diecut letters, custom inner sleeve and a 4-page booklet in English and Italian. The second piece on the LP (CMPSZN 2), for eight treated pianos, is a powerful and mesmerizing concrete/electroacoustic piece that takes to the limits the sonic possibilities of the instrument, but still remaining musical and highly enjoyable." - Die Schachtel. Title: The Electric Harpsichord

Label: Die Schachtel

Price: $21.00
"2nd pressing with new lower pricing. After the limited art edition quickly sold out, The Electric Harpsichord is now reprinted -- in its complete form -- in a new elegant white boxed edition. Known to the very few, The Electric Harpsichord is possibly THE obscure masterpiece of early American minimalism. Recorded live in 1976 after many years of study under the guidance of Pandit Pran Nath and La Monte Young, it has finally found the perfect home in the Die Schachtel catalog, now in an elegant white boxed 56-page book+CD edition, that gives the work the space and merit it deserves as a unique work of art, complete with two poems by La Monte Young especially written for this edition, and an extensive essay by Henry Flynt. An improvisation performed on just intonation-tuned keyboards put through time-lag accumulators similar to those used by Terry Riley, Hennix has produced one of the most remarkable pieces of music to emerge from the La Monte Young school of minimalism. A Sweden-born composer, who studied in the tradition of Xenakis and Stockhausen in the 1960s, Hennix met La Monte Young and Hindustani raga master Pandit Pran Nath at the Nuits du Fondation Maeght festival in 1970, and pursued studies with both men during the 1970s. While the use of the time-lag in Rileys works such as "A Rainbow In Curved Air" results in an experience of blissful, focused, samadhi-like calm, Hennixs drone work has more in common with the chaotic fluxes of psychedelic experience or the mandalas of Tibetan Buddhism. This is a moving eternity, a pulsating, shifting-something like a raga perhaps, insofar as a raga is a specific deity invoked into sound, fluttering inside the matrix of the drone. Catherine Christer Hennix: keyboard and custom sine wave generators. Recorded live at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi." - Die Schachtel.

"Another remarkable package from the jet-setting Die Schachtel label." - FE. "Much more than just a CD, this edition encapsulates the true spirit of Die Schachtel. It really is a box full of surprises; a journey into the sound of a unique group and the mind of a genius composer. The white industrial cardboard box includes an audio CD, a 12-page booklet, five graphical scores plus Roulette, a clock-like gadget originally used as the score of the aleatory composition with the same title. The music on the CD includes the digitally re-mastered edition of their only (and impossible to find) LP, privately pressed in 1977, plus two previously unreleased long compositions, for more than an hour of a great musical experience. About: Insiememusicadiversa (Different Collective Music): A remote part of the world staged the hidden and extraordinary musical utopia of Insiememusicadiversa, an experience of collective music that devoured and assimilated the seeds of the musical avant-garde of the second half of the twentieth century, mixing Cage and Cardew, DIY aesthetics and free jazz, fluxus and electronic/concrete music, nihilism and mal de vivre. Founded in Umbria (a region of central Italy) in the early 70s by Terzilio Mancinelli, creative genius and visionary composer, Insiememusicadiversa was the representation of Sound as a way of living, as a devouring obsession, a breathing and pulsating paradigm. Its a lucid delirium in which every single sound was -- surprisingly -- rigorously determined (each composition is annotated with mind-blowing graphical scores). Insiememusicadiversa was looking for collective music, often played with self-built or invented electronic instruments, including in its timbre-filled landscape the remains and debris of music shattered into tiny fragments." - Die Schachtel.

"Bronze silkscreened custom designed heavy natural cardboard digipak, complete with booklet in Italian and English. 300 hand-numbered copies. Yuri Kalendarev belongs to the generation of Russian underground non-conformist artists -- the dissidents of the 70s. He has been working for 30 years with different media such as granite sculpture, land art and light. He came upon the sonic possibilities of his work while exploring the intersection of sculpture and sound vibrations. His Sound Plates are forged with hammers and fire out of acoustic bronze compounds. They are designed to generate a large range of frequency oscillations, from massive low-frequency drones to deep percussive sounds that allow multiple interactions with the listeners inner being. In redefining the concept of sculpture in pure sound terms, the work of Yuri Kalendarev aims to explore a new aural experience beyond the act of listening, an investigation into the realm of pure acoustics. The performances captured on this CD represent the crystallization of the physicality of Kalendarevs sound sculptures, his attitude to rhythm, and his ability to create an atmosphere of deep concentration, silent communion, and mystery." -Die Schachtel

Title: Prati Bagnati del Monte Analogo
Format: CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $21.00
"Originally published in 1979 by the legendary Gianni Sassis Cramps Records label as part of a series curated by Franco Battiato, the long-awaited Prati Bagnati del Monte Analogo is finally made available by Die Schachtel in a repackaged deluxe edition, fully remastered (by Giuseppe Ielasi) from the original Cramps tapes, and complete with three extra tracks (in the CD edition) dug from Francesco Messinas archives. Produced by Franco Battiato, the breathtaking oeuvre of Francesco Messina and Raul Lovisoni is openly inspired by the unfinished metaphysical novel Le Mont Analogue, by the French writer René Daumal, who had been for many years a student of the teachings of the enigmatic Armenian Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff. The reference to Gurdjieff is important in order to frame this work in its own context, because at that time the great Greek-Armenian mystic was beginning to exert a large influence into the diverse and stimulating artistic environment that for many years developed around Battiato, which included, among the others, Juri Camisasca, Francesco Messina and Giusto Pio. Battiatos entourage was characterized by a deep desire of spirituality that would not adhere to a particular faith, but rather involved a full opening of the mind and body. This spiritual quest, that one can hear shining through the music, was something intimate and personal and it never became the expression of religious extremists looking forward to life in another world. Similarly, Prati Bagnati del Monte Analogo is a stage of that journey that the artists developed independently, yet with a constant tension of the spirit resulting from years of readings and reflections shared with others. The music on this album is an exact compendium of such an intimate journey: drones and overtones, repetitive patterns, a deep, meditative feel, and space atmospheres. "Writing this on a Sunday afternoon during breaks taken from restoring two zithers from the late 19th century. I love the instruments not only for their beautiful craftsmanship and sound, but for what theyve seen, the stories in which theyve played a part, and the journey that brought them to me. Francesco Messina and Raul Lovisonis Prati Bagnati del Monte Analogo is playing on a loop as so many times in the past, coloring the space I inhabit with its glowing overtones, spreading its majestic quietness. Taking as a starting point an unfinished utopian novel, written by French pataphysician René Daumal, in which is described the ascension of a mountain connecting Earth and Heaven, the three compositions take us on a journey through the rich green pastures of Mount Analogue, occasionally pausing beneath veils of light, only to stride determinedly onwards, to the realms of an ancient wind deity. At some point during this incursion, you may find yourself in a landscape set out by John Cage, witnessing Vainqueur, Substance and Resilient as children chanting their vocoded chants, or else enter a false portal planting you in Anthony Moores cloud and ballroom. While the subject matter is esoteric and the music makes no attempt to conceal this fact, its time we released these haunting pieces from the demesne of obscurity. Messina and Lovisoni have created a work of radiant beauty, oneiric states waiting to be explored, to lose ourselves in." -Stephan Mathieu, from the liner notes.

Format: LP
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $999.99
"Die Schachtel present a really unique edition, which they are not afraid to call the jewel in the crown of their celebrated Art Series, devoted to the most uncompromising expressions of sound and contemporary art: the repressing on vinyl LP of the 1969 lost recordings Soundtrack From First Violin Film by the world famous conceptual artist Bruce Nauman, in a limited (100 copies) art multiple, individually numbered and signed by Bruce Nauman and hosted in a stunning custom-designed and handmade yellow-glo perspex case. A copy of the record is already in the collections of both the Whitney Museum of American Art and the British Library and may be soon in the MOMAs too. Bruce Nauman is considered one of the most influential contemporary artists today, having created numerous genre-defining works through the exploration of the body and language, as well as performance over the past 50 years. His innovative and provocative ideas are expressed in a wide range of media and materials, which makes it difficult to categorize his work as inhabiting a single style. Title: Six Films (1966-1969)
Format: DVD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $27.00
"Die Schachtel in collaboration with O artspace proudly presents a deluxe DVD featuring six experimental films by New York-based composer, photographer and filmmaker Phill Niblock from the late-1960s. Anybody familiar with Niblock would probably characterize his work by the sound of his long, sonorous drones, producing rich overtones usually combined with a visual element -- since before moving into composition, Niblock was an active photographer and filmmaker. While he usually is known for his films from the Movement Of People Working series alongside performances of his music, Niblocks early works stand apart as unique objects. The integrity and consistency of his style is fully on display in these seldomly-seen or screened 16mm sound films wonders that include: Morning (1966-1969) from an idea by Phill Niblock and Jean Claude Van Itallie, filmed by PN, text by Lee Worley and Michael Corner, with members of the Open Theater group. Starring Lee Worley, James Barbosa, Cynthis Harris, Sharon Gans, Joseph Chaikin; text read by Lee Worley, James Barbosa, Barbara Porte, Dorothy Lyman, Michael Corner. Black & white 16mm film. The Magic Sun (1966-1968) with members of the Sun Ra Arkestra, music by Sun Ra and the Arkestra. Filmed on high-contrast black & white 16mm film. Dog Track (1969) -- a film by Phill Niblock, with a found text read by Barbara Porte. Color 16mm film. Annie (1968) -- a portrait of the dancer Ann Danoff, with a sound collage soundtrack. Color 16mm film. Max (1966-19) -- an image collage film/portrait of percussionist/sound-artist Max Neuhaus, with a collage soundtrack by Max Neuhaus. Black & white 16mm film. Raoul (1968-1969) -- a portrait of the painter Raoul Middleman, with extensive use of time-lapse film technique. The soundtrack is improvised by Raoul Middleman and Phill Niblock. Color 16mm film. Price: $58.00
“This deluxe double-LP box set commemorates the tenth anniversary of Die Schactels 2005 CD reissue of Prima Materias La Coda della Tigre/Tail of the Tiger, and marks the first vinyl edition of the album since its original 1977 release. La Coda della Tigre/Tail of the Tiger is a totally immersive listening experience and a true testament to the power and range of the human voice in all its harmonic splendor. Originally issued in 1977 by the Italian Ananda label, run by Prima Materia founder Roberto Laneri with Alvin Curran and Giacinto Scelsi, La Coda Della Tigre/Tail of the Tiger is a long, dense, trance-inducing drone of sustained notes, rich with overtones and harmonic embellishments and coming from a space so vast and unexplored that it evokes a non-human, almost ethereal nature. Every molecule of that sound was produced using only the most original and archaic of instruments, the human voice. The musicians of Prima Materia -- founded by Laneri in San Diego in 1973 -- individually researched and developed unusual vocal techniques (originally used in Tantric rituals in North India, Mongolia, and Tibet) based on the use of overtones coupled with a special state of inner concentration, which was the essential condition for both the emission and control of long, sustained, and complex vocal sounds. Their capacity to sustain a note for what seems an eternity and to continue to provide endless variations generates a continuous and sustained drone of sound in which the overtones are clearly perceived. La Coda della Tigre/Tail of the Tiger disappeared soon after its original release, acquiring an almost legendary status among collectors and lovers of experimental music in the decades since. Die Schachtel recovered the original tapes and, in 2005, released the limited CD The Tail of the Tiger, which went out of print itself in a few months. This box set includes the first vinyl reissue of La Coda della Tigre/Tail of the Tiger, plus an LP containing a stunning recording of a 1974 live performance in Cologne, Germany; both LPs are high-quality records pressed in Germany, and are presented in custom coated paper inner sleeves bearing original photos printed in silver ink. The set also includes a four-page explanatory booklet and a 16-page mandala booklet designed by Dinamomilano and inspired by the groups references and philosophy. Limited edition of 300.” - Die Schachtel.

Title: The Tail Of The Tiger
Format: CD
Label: Die Schachtel

Price: $22.00
"As is the case with La Monte Youngs Theater of Eternal Music, David Hykes Harmonic Choir and Pauline Oliveross Deep Listening Band, Roberto Laneri has had a life long penchant for the droning mysteriosa of the Sound Current and with the Prima Materia ensemble he has expressed it in a disciplined, expansive and singular way" - Terry Riley, 2005. "In 1977 an obscure Italian private label issued a record that sounded like it came from outer space. A long and dense trance-inducing drone of sustained notes, rich with overtones and harmonic embellishments, coming from a space so vast and unexplored that seemed almost of non-human, even electronic nature. Paradoxically, each and any molecule of that sound was produced using only the most original and archaic instrument, the human voice. The name of the group was Prima Materia (First Matter), a project that took shape in 1973 in San Diego, and the record The Tail of the Tiger was issued by the Ananda label, owned by Roberto Laneri, Alvin Curran and Giacinto Scelsi. The record soon disappeared and over the became almost a legend among collectors and experimental music lovers. The musicians of the group Prima Materia individually researched and developed unusual vocal techniques (originally used in Tantric rituals in North India, Mongolia and Tibet), based upon the use of overtones coupled with a special state of inner concentration, which was the essential condition for both the emission and control of long-sustained and complex vocal sounds. Their capacity to sustain a note for what seems an eternity, and then continue to provide endless variations generates a continuous and sustained drone of sound, in which the overtones are clearly perceived. This unique compact disk presents the complete Tail of the tiger recordings in a digitally remastered version, including two live concerts held in 1974 in Berlin and in 1976 in Rome. A totally fascinating journey into the realm of pure sound. Deluxe digipak CD, complete with a 8-page informative booklet plus an astounding 16-page exploration of visual overtones printed on transparent paper in full color." - Die Schachtel. Title: Images for Diana Baylon
Format: LP
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $29.00
"The long and mesmerizing single piece of analog electronic music that develops over the two sides of Images for Diana Baylon (1972), the latest Die Schachtel "Silver Series" LP is a soundscape composed by Teresa Rampazzi for the artist Diana Baylons 1972 exhibition at the modern art gallery Il Fiore in Florence, Italy. Diana Baylon (1920-2013), a friend of Rampazzis, was a cross-disciplinary artist who transformed various materials (ceramics, glass, metal, paper, paintings, graphics, jewelry) into figurative and - later in the 60s - abstract and programmatic art objects. In the summer of 1969 she appeared - along with Alberto Burri, Pablo Picasso, Jean Dubuffet and Lucio Fontana - at the Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto exhibition "Maitres Et Jeunes Daujourdhui". For the 1972 Florence exhibition, Teresa Rampazzi realized this long "soundtrack" (in her words) to be played in loop. Sounds were made with the analog equipment she used at the time. "The inner space of the exhibition" she wrote, "is made of sound, for the whole duration of the exhibition. The work is composed by a series of sound events, with both informal and aleatory features, in a continuous flux, and there is no planned predetermination in any of the various sections. This choice has been made for the sound space to adjust to the sculptors plastic and loose images." Immagini per Diana Baylon was in fact the third time Teresa Rampazzi realized music for an exhibition. The first was also the very first experimental composition that Rampazzi and Ennio Chiggio composed in 1965, a sound collage for the opening of an exhibition of the Gruppo Enne at the International Biennale dArte in Venice. The second soundscape piece, "Environ" (1970), was realized for the presentation of a 360 degree round modular couch in foamed resin designed by Chiggio, presented at a furniture shop in Padova in 1970. The piece is featured on the Die Schachtel Musica Endoscopica LP by Teresa Rampazzi released in 2009 (DS 009LP). Immagini per Diana Baylon is the eighth LP release in the Die Schachtel "Silver Series" dedicated to the pioneers of early Italian electronic music. Limited deluxe vinyl LP edition. Silver printed cover with silver-foil print, with a red inner sleeve and booklet. Edition of 450." - Die Schachtel.

Price: $31.00
"Following the acclaimed CD edition released by Die Schachtel in 2008, heres the long-awaited limited "silver" LP edition of Teresa Rampazzis incredible early electronic music. It differs from the CD edition with the inclusion of "Metamorfosi," a previously-unreleased and magnificent drone piece. Teresa Rampazzi, a seminal yet very little-known female Italian composer/musician, founded the NPS - Nuove Proposte Sonore -- an experimental music collective formed in the late-60s. She was also one of the founders and main figures of the Centro di Sonologia Computazionale, a computer music research center active from the early-70s at the University of Padua. It would be easy to see electronic composer Rampazzi as Italys equivalent of Daphne Oram or Delia Derbyshire, those long-neglected pioneers behind the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. But zoomed in closer, though, a more intriguing picture begins to emerge: Musica Endoscopica is in fact an immersive journey into a futurist-ic/early digital electronic music with dense, long drone pieces made of complex textures that explore the computers capacity to produce endless variations of source material, at times anticipating some of the electro-feel to emerge in the years to follow. A welcome return of Die Schachtels celebrated "metallic" series vinyl LP editions, dedicated to early electronic Italian composers. Housed in a deluxe silver cover with silver foil design with a custom inner sleeve and a 4-page booklet in English and Italian." -Die Schachtel.

"2009 reissue of this Italian psychoacoustic obscurity, originally released in 1975 on Ariston. Slick tri-fold digipak release with 12-page booklet and gloss varnish cover." - FE. "Back in 1975 when Suoni Di Frontiera (Borderline Sounds) was released, Claudio Rocchi was already a well known figure in the Italian pop scene. In the late 60s Rocchi had burst onto the scene as a member of Milanese psych-prog legends Stormy Six. He performed on their Le Idee Di Oggi Per La Musica Di Domani LP in 1969 and soon after, the acid folk of Viaggio, Rocchis solo debut, was released in 1970. That same year Rocchi hosted an influential radio show on the Italian national broadcasting station, RAI. 1971 brought the simply awesome Volo Magico No.1.
An acknowledged classic, it emerged as not dissimilar to Roy Harpers landmark song cycle of progressive/psych folk, Stormcock. The album -- especially the epic 18 minute title track -- established Rocchi as the Italian psych-folk minstrel par excellence. Then, after traveling to India, improvisation and Eastern philosophies began to shape his next few albums, Essenza from 1973 being a high point. 1974s Il Miele Dei Pianeti Le Isole Le Api (The Honey Of The Planets The Islands The Bees) featured guitars, tabla, strings and percussion but the following album from 1975, Rocchi was, according to the man himself, a real U turn. It featured a handful of songs, though Rocchi baffled his hardcore following by introducing cut-ups, environmental sounds and analogue synthesizers recorded at his home studio using a Revox A70.
This brings us to the experimental electronics of his next album Suoni Di Frontiera. Consisting of 16 sketches made at home, this recording went much further out than Rocchi. Described by so-called authorities to be naïve and unsophisticated, to these ears Suoni is a highly personal and extremely charming collection of psychedelically damaged constructs. All of Rocchis celebrated and highly-recognized vocals were now processed and modulated -- if they were heard at all. They sat alongside his spacey and dislocated homespun synth stylings that sound simultaneously retro and futuristic. What more can one ask for?
Rocchi described the release as "diving deeper into psychoacoustics, a practical theory on healing music, mind resonances, inner flows." Yep. And thanks to the good folk at Die Schachtel, another crucial piece of the 70s Italian puzzle has been unearthed for our pleasure. Dig in." - Oren Ambarchi.

"One of the very few female composer of early electronic music, Franca Sacchi studied at the famous RAI Studio of Fonologia in Milan in the 60s, and developed the En-static principle which included improvisation, electronic music, ritual, performance, teaching and meditation. Extremely reserved and enigmatic, Franca Sacchi has devoted her entire life to music, dance and yoga; she has been active as a conceptual artist too, and her work was also included in the notorious Broken Music exhibition. Throughout the years, she has carried on a complex multi-disciplinary research in a quest for the integration of music with other artistic expressions while at the same time radically questioning the concept of music making. Her electronic music focuses mainly on sound, which is treated as raw material and endlessly explored. Sacchis free concept of duration and deep emotional feel brings her closer to Eliane Radigue and La Monte Young, especially for the long and sustained tones which are suddenly turned into pulsations and gritty sound textures. Artist: TRAVERSA, MARTINO
Title: Critical_Path
Format: CD
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $18.00
"Martino Traversa is a very well-known Italian composer who studied at Salzburgs Mozarteum, at the CCRMA at Stanford University and with Luigi Nono from 1987 to 1989. Critical_Path presents for the first time ever a selection of his electronic music works, composed between 2000 and 2008. Besides being a prolific composer, Martino is a very active cultural promoter: he founded the Ensemble Edgard Varèse in 1990, with Luigi Nonos support; in 1991 he launched "Traiettorie," a highly-reputed international festival of modern and contemporary music in Parma, where he is also Professor of Music at the University. He recently established the Casa del Suono in Parma, a place entirely devoted to new music events. The most important piece on this CD is undoubtedly "Variations Upon A Labyrinth" (2000), prompted by two of the most significant personalities of Italian avant-garde, the poet Edoardo Sanguineti and the composer Luciano Berio. The piece is in fact based on the "Laborintus" text by Edoardo Sanguineti, read by the poet himself, whose voice is electronically treated by the composer, becoming a sort of maze of sound and meaning. "NGC 253" (2007) is a sort of virtual sound sculpture realized for the outstanding "Sonic Chandelier" installed in the Casa del Suono. The Chandelier consists of 228 speakers precisely distributing sounds in the area below the installation, giving the listeners the feeling that the sound is coming from invisible sources moving just above and around their heads. This site-specific works main constituent is anything else but 253 milliseconds of noise, taken from an old vinyl recording that undergoes a subtle transformation, evolving and wandering in different time and spatial dimensions, but always following a spiral pattern, falling from the top to the bottom of the acoustic space as a sort of "quantistic rain of sounds." This is not the only composition inspired by a specific site: "Coming To The Temple Of Asclepion" was composed after a visit to the ancient temple situated on top of one of the hills of the Greek island of Kos, where the surrounding sounds are greatly evocative: waves breaking on the rocks and the shrill of cicadas in a landscape made mainly of blue sky. Taking inspiration from these sounds (and far from any New-Ageish reference), the composition is a sort of programmed crescendo that builds up to a drama: a high level of noise is followed by a sudden, immense silence. What remains is the image of the "écume des mer" that climbs up the hill, bringing with it the voices of the thousands of men and women that lived there, just to make us remember once again the fragility of the human existence. Last but not least, "Critical_Path" is a composition that once again starts from natural sounds, like wind and water, and the sound of traditional instruments like the piano, and aims to explore the intrinsic properties of the nature of each sound, in order to define a specific abstract reference model. It is realized through a sound-generation engine based on a new type of synthesis and sound models. The new sounds are multiform, almost protean, as different structures and reference models coming from different sounds co-exist within them. A great "electronic" premiere for a composer definitely worth exploring." -Die Schachtel.

"Subtitled: The Prix Italia And The Radiophonic Experimentation. Deluxe boxed edition -- 6CD + 400-page book in Italian and English. Edited by Angela Ida De Benedictis and Maddalena Novati. After five years of intense, passionate and sometimes painful work, Die Schachtel (in collaboration with RAI) is proud to announce the release of the long-awaited massive book + 6CD boxed edition dedicated to some of the most compelling Italian radio works which took part in the prestigious Prix Italia, a world-famous contest established by the RAI (the National Italian broadcasting company) in the 50s and still alive today, aimed to award the best and most uncompromising audio-visual works produced throughout the world. The Prix Italia and Radiophonic Experimentation presents seven original radio plays -- some of them previously-unreleased -- which entered the competition from 1961 to 1981, complete with two audio interviews of some of the participants. The works have been taken from the original RAI tapes, carefully restored and impeccably re-mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi, making them a splendid listening experience. The accompanying 400-page book (in Italian and English) features seven essays written by some of the most prominent experts in this field, plus a long interview with Mr. Sermonti and the complete transcriptions (again both in Italian and English) of all the featured works. Curated with painstaking attention to detail by Angela Ida De Benedictis and Maddalena Novati (authors of the celebrated New Music At The Radio and Nine Oscillators books, both devoted to the RAI Studio di Fonologia), the enclosed book takes advantage of the impeccable English translation by Mr. Mark Weir and the classic design by Dinamomilano, making it an essential reading in understanding in-depth the musical and semiological aspects of these outstanding works, composed and realized by some of the greatest geniuses of modern Italian music. The selection includes works from artists such as Nino Rota, Bruno Maderna, Niccolò Castiglioni, Luciano Berio and Salvatore Sciarrino." -Die Schachtel.

2016 repress. "A reissue of the LP as it was originally issued in 1978. Vaccina had intended for this album to be a double LP, and recorded enough material for one, but it was then trimmed down. The recordings that were cut from the original release are presented on the “Frammenti…” LP released alongside this one.

"One of two LP versions. Includes the first six tracks from Lino "Capra" Vaccinas Antico Adagio (DS 027CD), originally released in 1978. Antico Adagio is an amazing work that anticipated countless others in the field of so-called "new age" and world music, yet remains at the crossroad between those genres and experimental and electronic music. Apart from a few violin parts and the extraordinary vocal lines (sung by Vaccina himself and Juri Camisasca), Antico Adagio is an album fully built on percussion. At the same time, its the farthest thing from the typical idea of percussion. You wont find a single trace of African or primitive beats: instead, this is a collection of rather long, subtle and thoughtful compositions, crafted with vibraphones, marimbas and gong. Together they create a work which will remain unique -- both in Lino Vaccinas discography as well as in a more general sense." - Die Schactel.

"Before an aberrant idea of progress and workaholic ethic ludicrously sped up our daily lives, even in the hectic city of Milan it was possible to "play slowly" -- with little or no pressure, simply following the path your art was showing you. After a classic artistic beginning and an experimental stint with Aktuala and other brilliant fellow musicians (Franco Battiato, above all), Lino "Capra" Vaccina, near the end of the 70s, recorded Antico Adagio, an amazing work that anticipated countless others in the field of so-called "new age" and world music, yet remains at the crossroad between those genres and experimental and electronic music. From Kieran Hebden/Four Tets liner notes: "There are records I have found in my life that I was almost wishing existed before hearing them. Recordings with new combinations of sound and atmosphere I knew could be wonderful to me if I ever discovered them, and then on discovery the sound was even better than I could have imagined. I felt this way when first hearing music by Alice Coltrane (Journey to Satchidananda) and Don Cherry (Organic Music Society) and I also felt it with Antico Adagio. The combinations of the rhythms and melodies resonate with me in a very clear way and I feel transported by this music every time I hear it. I first heard this record when it was posted on the Mutant Sounds blog a few years ago and am very happy to see it get another release. The music is timeless and brilliant and maybe there are other people out there wishing for a sound like this too, who will now have chance to find it." - Die Schachtel.

Artist: ZUCCHERI, MARINO
Title: Parete 1967
Format: LP
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $31.00
"Marino Zuccheri was the sound engineer of the famous Milan RAI (Italian Broadcasting Company) Electronic Music Studio, and he worked with Berio, Nono, Maderna, Cage, Pousseur among the others, and he gave birth to some of the great masterpieces of early electronica. He was the one who actually knew how to operate the machines (oscillators, tapes etc), and thats why Umberto Eco (the philosopher and world famous novelist - i.e. The Name of the Rose - who worked at RAI and especially with Berio on "Thema-Omaggio a Joyce") wrote: «Who is one of the most performed contemporary electronic composer in the world? Marino Zuccheri, the sound engineer of the RAI Studio of Fonologia in Milan. Illustrious figures in the history of contemporary music arrived there with State grants; but after many months, they still couldnt figure out how to handle the machines. Then Marino (who, working with Berio and Maderna, had become a wizard), started mixing tapes and producing electronic sounds: that is why some of the compositions now being performed all over the world are by Marino Zuccheri.» (Umberto Eco) In 1967 the world-famous painter Emilio Vedova was appointed by the National Government to create an installation for the Italian Pavilion at the Montreal Expo. Vedova came up with this great idea of using small glass slides, especially created to reproduce his abstract painting, and then projected on the asymmetrical walls of the Pavilion. He then asked Nono to compose some electronic music. Nono had no time, and suggested to ask Marino. He replied: "I could do something, but keep in mind that I am no composer". The result is Parete (Wall) 1967, a spectacular and intense 30-minutes loop of pure and intense electronics, a magmatic cascade of harsh sounds and deep drones, and a fantastic counterpart to the vibrant and expressionistic painting of Vedova. As in Marinos word: "I used some previously recorded sounds, the result of an early research: they were really rough material. I created a great loop, which intersected another one, a 30 meters, 30-minutes tape ring. It was so long that it extended out of the Studio room, my colleagues thought I was gone totally nuts. You heard this very loud timbre the music interacted freely with Vedovas visuals, it really was a free encounter between sound and light." This great work has been totally forgotten since today. This record is in fact a world premiere, and the final act of justice towards a man that contributed so much to the birth and development of Electronic Music. PERSONAL NOTE: We have received the tape directly from Marinos hands , taken from his archive. He has been dreaming for years to have it released, and he was totally enthusiastic about our project. Unfortunately he was very old and sick, and he died a few months ago, before we could give him the actual record. It surely is one of our greatest regrets, although we think that justice is done, after all." - Die Schachtel.

"Looking like a perfect replica of a vintage tape reel, this is in fact a 33rpm vinyl LP inserted between two round slices of soft black rubber, and two custom laser-cut aluminum plates. Complete with a 4-page booklet and hosted in a custom-made red cardboard box, this unique object is intended as an homage to the great and recently missed Marino Zuccheri, the sound engineer/tape music genius of the world famous RAI Studio of Fonologia in Milan from the early 60s to the official closure in the early 80s. His sense of humor and natural modesty, together with his immense talent, made him a very special man and musician, and the music of Parete 1967 is a living testimony of this. Total hand-numbered copies: 67." - Die Schachtel.
