Artist: MODERN ART
Title: Oriental Towers
Format: LP
Label: Color Tapes
Country: UK
Price: $20.00
First time standalone reissue of Modern Arts second cassette album. Includes three previously unissued tracks from the album session. Edition of 500 with poster insert. "Another entry from the darkly enchanting minimal synth-pop and psych-tinged world of The Modern Art. As an introduction to the world of Coil and Current 93 collaborator (and Sun Dial main man) Gary Ramon and his orbiting bandmates, you cant do better.

"From a time when drummers were as rare as a tune with a melody. It could have been made yesterday, by one of those modern bands of foppish young men, whose parents record collection contained stuff like The Wake and Modern English. A jolly jaunt through some early eighties indie, full of hand played synth lines, classic drum box sounds, poppy sequences, and introverted vocals.""Now this is my kind of icy, desolate lo-fi music. A lot of 80s music that I listen to nowadays seems to predict the coming of vaporwave & hypnagogic pop 25+ years later, and this album is no different, even if its only really predicting the bleaker aspects of the latter. Still, this stuff is occasionally very pretty (Stars)... Theres plenty of diversity on a track-for-track basis: compare the dreaminess built out of layered acoustic guitars on Beautiful Truth to the more energetic and mechanical Little Ballerina. Or just compare any other track to the untitled closer, which is basically ambient guitar + some echoed sample hovering off in the distance."

Formed by Ramon in the early 1980s, Modern Art released two albums on vinyl, and a significant amount of impossible-to-find cassettes. Some of this material was compiled in a highly regarded 3-LP (sold out) box set, made in 2013 by Vinyl on Demand. This remastered reissue of "Oriental Towers," their second cassette album, originally released in 1983, also includes three previously unissued tracks from that session. On this album you will find examples of what was going on in England during the pinnacle of the post-punk scene—an inspired time that encouraged young musicians to develop music influenced by the likes of Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle and Clock DVA. Title: Still Life
Format: LP
Label: Color Tapes
Country: UK
Price: $20.00
Limited to 250 copies. "Mystery Plane formed in 1980 from the ashes of 70s new wave band 3D5 whos line-up also featured future Cure member Porl Thompson. This record was originally a demo cassette made in 1981 that was hawked around record labels with a view for release. Later Color Tapes released a 100 copies edition. To support their demo at the time the band played such gigs at the Marquee, Rock Garden and The Bridgehouse supporting bands such as Fad Gadget, Modern English and Henry Padovani (Ex-Police) in London. This sublime minimal basement krauty synth LP was inspired by bands such as Neu, Amon Duul ll, and "Vienna" period Ultravox. The album features guitar work of Gerald O Connell who was a big fan of Ash Ra Tempels guitarist Manuel Gottsching. A year later he went on to form Lives Of Angels who made the classic cold wave album "Elevator To Eden" which was originally released on Color Tapes in 1983. Title: Cold Waves of Color
Format: LP
Label: Color Tapes
Country: USA
Price: $25.00
“A superb album, compiling electronic synth pop, cold wave and minimal tracks from the Color Tapes label, spanning 1981-1985. The Color Tapes label was the brainchild of a young Gary Ramon after being inspired by cassette labels such as Fuck Off Tapes, Weird Noise and other underground UK labels; also by the music of the late 70s and early 80s such as Cabaret Voltaire, Suicide, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Throbbing Gristle, Fad Gadget, as well as electronic musicians such as John Cage, La Monte Young, Stockhausen, Pierre Henry, Moondog, and others. The tracks from this compilation originally came out only on limited cassette runs of 100 copies sold at gigs, mail order and record shops such as Small Wonder Records. The majority of these tracks from these UK garage cold wave bands used mostly synthesizer, drum machines and sequencers such as EMS VCS3, Minimoog, Korg MS-20, Roland Juno 6, SH-09, TR-808. Remastered from original analogue source tapes by Denis Blackham, this is a must-have collection for electronic, synth and cold wave collectors. Includes a full colour illustrated poster of all the cassette sleeves (70+ releases) made by the label between 1979-1986.” - Color Tapes.

Title: Cold Waves of Color
Format: CD
Label: Color Tapes
Country: USA
Price: $12.00
With two bonus tracks not included on the LP version. "Collection of rare UK cold wave tracks taken from Color Tapes label cassettes released in micro editions between 1981-1985. Color Tapes was the brainchild of future Sun Dial leader Gary Ramon: "Living in East London, it was a very grey and bleak time. Huge imposing tower blocks, gasworks and concrete just about everywhere. You couldnt walk through some areas without the risk of being shot at by an air rifle, or worse. Luckily, salvation was in the music. The musical landscape was changing. I saw a very early gig by an unknown all-synth band called Depeche Mode at a dingy pub under a flyover called The Bridge House in Canning Town, London. Following this I saw Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and started buying records by the likes of Afrika Bambaataa. At the other end of the musical spectrum, we were picking up records by Stockhausen, John Cage, Pierre Henry and Moondog, and combing junk shops for anything else that looked interesting!" The UK cassette scene and DIY ethos were thriving. Color Tapes was born. Home multi-track recorders were luxury items. They had to make do with sound on sound recorders, bouncing between reel-to-reel and cassette machines if they wanted stereo. What youre about to hear for the first time since those days is a snapshot of Color Tapes: released material and other unissued tracks too. This compilation is the first of a series of Color Tapes/Lion Productions releases of material from the Color Tapes archives.” - Color Tapes.

"Theres some real gold inside, not least in The Lords kosmic electro-garage-punk mission, Transvision, or the wiry EBM of Beserk In A Hayfields Pulse, but also the swirling noise blow-out of WeR7s Masterful of Ceremonies (Edit), and the flanging garage-punk strut of Elixir Vapor by Disintegrators, plus a handful of icy, cold and crisp 808 workouts Lives of Angels and Body Electric." - Boomkat.

Title: Cold Waves Of Color Volume 3
Format: LP
Label: Color Tapes
Country: USA
Price: $20.00
"Latest collection of rare cold wave from the Color Tapes archives also includes a full colour poster plus a rare reprint of issue 2 of Color Tapes own Purple Twilight fanzine from 1985, featuring articles on bands such as Bushido and Mystery Plane, plus The Subway Organization cassette catalogue from 1985. An essential document from the 80s UK cassette underground scene. Praise for the series: “Must have collection of English post-punk synth rarities, sourced from the legendary Color Tapes label, remastered by Denis Blackham, all presented on vinyl for the first time! Its highly likely that these tracks have been barely heard beyond their original 100 edition tape pressings in the early 80s, and thusly this is a bit of a treasure trove, especially when considering the quality of the masters. This is the realest deal for people into minimal wave, Dark Entries and OG wave music. Dont sleep!” – Boomkat review. The majority of these tracks from these UK garage cold wave bands used mostly synthesizer, drum machines and sequencers such as EMS VCS3, Minimoog, Korg MS-20, Roland Juno 6, SH-09, TR-808 – so you know how they could sound. These machines today are part of the history of the development of electronic music in the UK." - Lion Productions.
