Artist: BEHRENS, M. Title: Architectural Commentaries Format: CD Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $12.50 |
"German composer and sound artist Marc Behrens has put forth a beautiful installment of sound work for CMRs second CD release, entitled Architectural Commentaries. Marc has been working with sound (in one form or another) since 1986 and is probably most recognised for his digitally re-worked field material and composition. With a long history of installation work and live performance, he has exhibited alone and in group exhibitions; and performed live internationally in locations such as Japan, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, and the UK. He has completed tours with fellow sound artists Francisco Lopez, Bernhard Gunter and John Duncan and has had notable CD releases on Gunters label Trente Oiseaux (Germany), Digital Narcis (Japan), Raster Music (Germany) and Intransitive Recordings (USA). Architectural Commentaries is comprised of five tracks. The first three pieces, entitled Architectural Commentaries 1-3, are some of Marcs most recent compositions arranged in 2001 using basic material recorded from 1990-2000 in various global locations. Taking title, sleeve images and sound together we are left with new audible environments for architectural structures; jets of forced air and amplified nothing, distant machinery and tiny bites of frequency, faded and cut together to create beautifully atmospheric soundscapes. Track 4 was previously released on RLWs Tulpas 5 CD set (Selektion 024) and was constructed using source material from Ralf Wehowsky. Track 5 was composed in 1992 as a soundtrack to accompany the video Der Raum by Torsten Grosch - stills of which feature on the CD sleeve. The album permits a smooth flow between Marcs earlier and more recent work and shows the artists continuing exploration into the depth and dimensions of sound recording." - CMR. |
Artist: COSTER. TIM Title: Rowboat/Blackberry Format: Lathe Cut 7" Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $13.00 |
"Tim Coster, hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, presents on CMR his third solo release in the form of an acetate 7". Coster is a sound artist and improviser involved in a number of different projects: Plains (see new CD on www.scarcelight.org), his record label CLaudia (see www.cmr.co.nz/acroma for available releases), and solo practice recording works for CD, sound installation and performance. Working primarily with field recordings and various instruments Coster concentrates on short segments of recorded sound which he dissects, processes and loops. Over these he adds granular tones, field hums and live crackles creating delicate and peaceable sound works. This acetate is produced by Peter King in Mt Somers, NZ and shows Coster at his more musical, with two fantastic 5min songs showing his talent in the subtle mixing of tone and texture." - CMR. |
Artist: ENGLISH, LAWRENCE & RICHARD FRANCIS Title: LERFAUSNZNWSD12006/LERFAUSNZNWSD22006 Format: 7 Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $12.00 |
"This record was produced as part of an English/Francis collaborative sound installation for the Melbourne Next Wave Festival, 2006. Source sounds were recorded from old sound recording and playback equipment (gramophone, record players, magnetic tape machines, acetate and vinyl records, radio static). Recordings were exchanged and manipulated, resulting in two tracks pressed to vinyl." - CMR. Edition of 100 copies. Actual vinyl, NOT a lathe cut. |
Artist: EREWHON CALLING Title: Experimental Sound in New Zealand Format: Book Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $40.00 |
"Erewhon Calling: experimental sound in New Zealand
is a lavishly-illustrated new publication from the
Audio Foundation and CMR. It is a survey of how
a bunch of antipodean misfits and malcontents
have forged new ways and new reasons to make
noise, here at the end of the earth. Edited by Bruce
Russell (the Dead C.), in association with Richard
Francis and Zoe Drayton; the aim of this volume
is to survey the full range of non-standard audio
practices in contemporary NZ culture. The books
remit runs from the borders of composed art
music, through improvised noise, to deconstructed
rockn pop filth; and every genre, every scene,
every permutation of unconventional audio practice
in-between. The aim is not to be comprehensive
(there is literally too much vitality and diversity for
any book!). The hope is to throw a good handful of
gravel into the pool. While not every eel will have
been hit, the surface will have been rippled from
shore to shore, which is more than anyone else has
even attempted before.
Erewhon Calling makes room for many voices,
allowing multiple and possibly conflicting voices
and points of view. A range of artists and informed
commentators mainly tell their own stories, describe
their own work, and outline their own goals in
working on the fringes of audio culture. The readers
of this important new source book will be able to
discern their own meanings and make their own
connections from this thought-provoking and unique publication." - CMR.

Artist: HAMILTON, SAM Title: Tropics Format: Lathe Cut 7" Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $15.00 |
"two lovely looping tracks made from electric guitar, sampler pedal, spring reverb, computer and lathe. Music thats perfectly suited to the format, loops that shift and change over the 4 mins or so per side. When the records came back I wasnt sure if my old Garrard was sticking on a groove or playing the piece. It was playing, nice... Sam is currently in South America on various recording projects, an old bio below: sitting free from the shallow waters of borderline music, watching stones sink and demanding rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty in the ripples: "hey dickhead, your guitar is out of tune!"" - CMR. Edition of 45. |
Artist: HOMETOWN FEILDING Title: Clouds Across The Bay Format: Lathe Cut 7" Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $14.50 |
"Mark Sadgrove is the man behind Hometown Feilding, as well as his other excellent solo sound project MHFS. Hes also one part of Infinitesimal, one sixth of Plains etc. Hometown Feilding is defined by rough textural electronic sound generated by Sadgroves mastery of sound generation application C-Sound which he uses to twist sounds in on themselves - like a hard drive driven to self mutilation. Great stuff, especially cut by Peter Kings lathe machine to polycarbonate plastic in mono." - CMR. |
Artist: HUTCHINSON, IAN-JOHN Title: An Utterbook Format: Lathe Cut 7" Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $15.00 |
"An Utterbook is fantastic and features one track made from combinations of various field recordings of birds, train stations, hums and noises, beautifully combined. The other piece is a recording of that described below ("integrating utterances into various sound environments") as Ian-John wanders around the streets of Taipei, check it out....top stuff. CMRs first primarily field recording based release for quite some time (since K Mizutani and R Meelkop CDs)" - CMR.
"Developing from an interest in poetry Ian-John began making field recordings in the late 90s, making collages with both a journalistic, documentary ethos and a flavour of audio-book narration and none of the above. Subsequently he has developed a fascination with the linguistic and extra-linguistic vocal products (utterance objects) of various social situations, an interest amplified through exposure to the sound environments of Taiwan and Japan. One strategy is a performance practise of integrating utterances into various sound environments e.g. hes that nutter in the street wearing headphones and talking into an expensive looking microphone. Starting in 2003 he has published a short series of field recordings of utterance objects collected around particular themes under the title Utterbooks ?? . Ian-John is an active member of the Auckland improvised music network Vitamin-S, and is a contributor to the online archive soundtransit.nl." - artist bio.

Artist: JGRZINICH Title: Intimations Format: CD Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $12.50 |
"Sound and Video artist John Grzinich has been working under the name jgrzinich since 1995. He has performed and worked extensively throughout Europe and the US. His sound compositions have been published internationally on such labels as Staalplaat (NL), erewhon (BE), Intransitive Recordings (US), Orogenetics (US), Elevator Bath (US), Pale-Disc (JP), Digital Narcis (JP). These works consist of collaborations with mnortham, Seth Nehil and Frequency Curtain (Josh Ronsen, Rick Reed, jgrzinich). Since 1994 jgrzinich has explored various approaches to sound generation, recording and production. His techniques range from the construction of original instrument devices and the capturing of acoustic phenomenon through environmental field recordings to digital multi-tracking and manipulation. intimations is the first solo release from jgrzinich. intimations began as a series of piano recording experiments in the spring of 2001 in Austin, Texas and continued as a sonic diary of life in transit throughout Europe. The resulting CD came from a culmination of experiences, continually worked through as dynamic and personal electro-acoustic reflections. intimations is comprised of recordings from Texas, Croatia, Italy and Germany and was composed at numerous locations from the Balkans to the Baltics. The CD includes an extended essay by the composer. "These are intimations of a different kind; as if listening was no longer about finding references in a mediated culture but is about sensing the coordinates of ones position through a set of precise signals present in the environment." John Grzinich currently lives in Estonia and works as a media lab coordinator for MOKS, an NGO organization dedicated to local and international cooperation in the fields of arts, social and environmental research." - CMR. |
Artist: LUGOSI Title: Dawn Format: CD Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $12.50 |
"Lugosi existed in Wellington, New Zealand from the mid to late 1990s and consisted of players Campbell Kneale (Birchville Cat Motel, With Throats As Fine As Needles, Celebrate Psi Phenomenon label boss etc), Andrew Savage (Sunship) and Leon Schutz, with a guest appearance on track two by Clayton Noone (Armpit, CJA, The Strange Girls, Root Don Lonie for Cash label boss etc). Dawn is the groups only CD release to date, following a trickle of fantastic and long out of print miniature edition lathe records and cassette tapes mostly published on Kneales Celebrate Psi Phenomenon label. The six improvisations on the album were recorded in the Lower Hutt Baptist Church in 1998. With electric guitars and keyboards the group creates multiple layers of swooning feedback loops, drifting guitar notes and riffs that interweave - sculpting rich harmonic drones that fall in and out of rhythm with sprinklings of intermittent percussion. CMR is delighted to bring this set of crisp recordings out of the vaults to a wider audience of wanting ears." - CMR. |
Artist: MEELKOP, ROEL Title: (onkyo ok) Format: CD Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $12.50 |
"Launching CMRs new line of hand-numbered 78rpm dust jacket CD packaging is Dutch sound artist Roel Meelkop. Roel was a founding member of audio art group THU20 in the early eighties who continue to perform and record, is currently a member of electro-acoustic live project Kapotte Muziek, and the electronic rhythm group GOEM (both along with Frans De Waard and Peter Duimelinks). Roel has a long history of visual art, sound installation, curation and organization of various live music events in Rotterdam, his city of residence, and abroad. His well-received solo work has been released on numerous labels including trente oiseaux (Ger), V2_Archief (Neth), line (US), Intransitive Recordings (US), Korm Plastics (Neth) and most recently Tariff Records (US) and Klingfilm (Bel). onkyo ok is composed of recordings made during Roels tour to Japan in summer 2001 (along with Frans De Waard and Peter Duimelinks). Where Kiyoshi Mizutanis Yokosawa-iri CD (cmr1) uses primarily rural sound sources from a selected area, onkyo ok may strike a special chord and familiarity with anyone who has visited Japans urban areas, cities and outlying regions. Various components of the rich Japanese soundscape (to name a few: pachinko parlours, train crossings, crows, electrical machines, people) have been captured, abstracted (or not), blended and re-composed creating unique sonic snapshots of this beautiful and at times bewildering country. The sound pieces are relatively constant over time (Roels characteristic silences are at a minimum) containing numerous complimentary sources simultaneously building together into broadband structures, then falling away to focus on various seperate objects and events. This album serves as a beautiful document and expression of the ever-changing Japanese acoustic environment as it was at the beginning of the twenty first century." - CMR. |
Artist: MIZUTANI, KIYOSHI Title: Yokosawa-iri Format: CD Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $12.50 |
"CMR is happy to present its first release by long term sound artist Kiyoshi
Mizutani. A former member of Merzbow, Mizutani has been creating his solo
work since 1989, delving into areas of electronic noise, structural sound
systems of feedback and instrumentation as well as natural compositional
arrangements of field recordings.
Yokosawa-iri falls into the latter category. All field recordings were made
at this Satoyama, a traditional form of agricultural environment
consisting of a mountain, a rice field and a small village where people and
nature coexist in harmony. With beautiful clarity Mizutani illustrates an
environment and its inhabitants through the delicate combination of found
sounds both natural and mechanical. The Satoyama is a very rare setting in
contemporary Japan, no doubt one of the reasons Mizutani chose to document
the area.
Constructed from overlapping forest sounds of wind, trees, birds, rocks,
insects, animals and children (to name a few sources) the tracks rise and
fall with intensity, at times suggesting the encroaching modern world on
this traditional area. Yokosawa-iri is a beautiful entry into Mizutanis
already impressive dossier of sound work." - CMR.

Artist: SCI HI Title: Lab Recordings Format: Lathe Cut 7"/CDR Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $18.50 |
"Sci Hi is the moniker of musician and sound artist Paul Winstanley. Paul has been active for many years in numerous incarnations while in Texas and Auckland, New Zealand including P.H., LoCasta, Artificial Subterrane, Speed Cook, Paul Guilford from The Dave Dove Paul Duo, and more recently in Auckland groups such as Audible 3 and Plains. The Sci Hi sound is made from digital feedback. Sci Hi is like a school of small fish where each fish is represented by a tiny sine wave rising or falling in pitch. PW jumps in the middle of the school and all the little fishys go scattering in every direction, creating beautifully complex, multi-layered clouds of sound." - CMR. |
Artist: UN CIEGO Title: L.A. Softcore Format: Lathe Cut 7" Label: CMR Country: New Zealand Price: $10.00 |
"NZer Andrew Scott, formerly living in Auckland, now for a few years located in Los Angeles, California. This solo record features 7 short tracks, all made with acoustic and electric guitars. A mix of guitar note plucking and strumming, drone repetition, and heavy distorted noise. Somehow all tied together beautifully, almost as if its one track. At times sounds like there is a field recording component to the recordings, but I think this is more likely ambient sounds from the rooms/locations he records in (was that a pub? was that an abandoned warehouse?)." -CMR |
