Artist: ESO STEEL
Title: Technology Of Sleep
Format: LP
Label: 20 City
Country: New Zealand
Price: $13.50
"New Zealand expat Richard Francis, now residing in Tokyo, lands on the shores of our senses with his one full length release for 2000, Technology of Sleep. Francis has been long active downunder in the world of NZ underground tape and acetate labels. After recording with the short lived guitar noise band Small Blue Torch (with Birchville Cat Motels Campbell Kneale), Francis set sails for the orient where he has been releasing a steady stream of tracks on CD and acetate record. Sleep indicates a development in style from the drone and loop releases of previous years. More compositional in approach, Steel works a gentle blend of natural and artificial field materials including high frequency pitches, deep bass and minute scratches of sound sourced from the natural environment, household appliances, and body movements. At times a combination of the noise from ones surroundings, as well as the natural pops and clicks of the vinyl are beckoned into the compositions through the spatial arrangement of sounds and Steels interesting use of altering volume. Recognizable but also unfamiliar, the territory mapped by Sleep sits comfortably in the electo-acoustic region of sound making, background or foreground."

Artist: FRANCIS, RICHARD
Title: Three Tracks
Format: 3" CD
Label: 20 City
Country: New Zealand
Price: $8.00
"New Zealand sound artist Richard Francis (aka Eso Steel), is the third artist released on cmr and the first 3⿝ CD from the label. Richard has been involved with experimental music since 1996 when he began his first solo excursions (combining tape looped instrumentation with field recordings) and played in a guitar improvisation group with Birchville Cat Motels Campbell Kneale, called Small Blue Torch. His sound making since then has explored different techniques of CD sampling and abstraction, with a focus on electroacoustic collection and abstraction/manipulation of field recordings from various natural and mechanical sound sources. He has released sound works on labels such as Last Visible Dog, USA; Drone Records, Germany; Stateart, Germany; Absurd, Greece, with numerous releases on his own labels 20city and CMR, and has toured extensively in Japan, New Zealand, and most recently the West Coast of the US. Three Tracks (co-released by CMR, New Zealand and Stateart, Germany) contains three compositions recorded mid to late 2001 in Japan (where Richard formally resided) and mixed in mid 2002 in New Zealand. Using contact and stereo microphones, field audio material was gathered from organic and mechanical sources, found in both interior and exterior locations in and around Tokyo. Richard uses the subtle elements of these recordings (quiet electrical hums and crackle, amplified ambient near silences, minute occurrences) and carefully abstracts and arranges them into texturally detailed, engaging compositions. Three Tracks sits nicely in Richards catalogue of audio manipulation, following a well received 7⿝ (under his moniker Eso Steel) on Drone Records, and an LP on 20city." - 20 City.

Artist: KUWAYAMA-KIJIMA
Title: 00/10/17d-00/10/17e
Format: 7"
Label: 20 City
Country: Japan
Price: $6.50
"Midnight at a construction site in Naogoya, Japan, large and particularly loud fan vent whirling, Kuwayama Kiyoharu and Kijima Rina hit record and begin to play. Kuwayama uses a cello and Kijima a violin. Its an eerie setting to be recording, and the improvisations that flow from their instruments carry this beautifully. Setting seems to be a fairly important part of their recording technique as their full length cd, available on GG Records (www.lethe-voice.com/gg), was recorded in a large Warehouse. The space around them in those recordings is also very clear. Some truely fabulous stuff from this improv duo. Kijima Rina has a number of solo tapes out, Kuwayama Kiyoharu is very active in a number of groups in Nagoya. Together they organise the annual week-long Lethe-Voice Festival in Nagoya which brings together a diverse collection of Japanese and international sound makers. Kuwayamas solo work also featured on the split 7" with Toy.Bizarre (20C-5) under the name Lethe." - 20 City. Edition of 300 copies.

Artist: NEHIL, SETH
Title: Uva
Format: 3" CD
Label: 20 City
Country: New Zealand
Price: $8.00
"20 City is proud to release Uva, a new CD by sound artist Seth Nehil. In the field of electroacoustic music, Nehil is perhaps best known for his longstanding partnership with John Grzinich and Olivia Block as Alial Straa, formed in 1994. Nehil also participated in the Orogenetics arts collective together with Michael Northam and John Grzinich, operating in Austin, Texas from 1996-99. Now based in Portland, Oregon, Nehil continues to collaborate with Grzinich, Northam and Block in sound, performance and organization. Seth Nehil possesses an uncanny ability to create a wealth of sounds using innovative recording and performance techniques, without relying on effects boxes and processors. He creates complex sound environments that are subtle, clear and close. His sounds seem to emphasize the very silence that surrounds them, creating an infinite space for the listeners imagination to roam. Uva presents one track, just over 20 minutes in length. Objects in motion, a complex layering of textures, circular sounds and harmonies that intensify and recede... these are the constituent parts of this engaging new work. The term "uva" means grape, associated with ferment and intoxication, and is also associated with "ova" (the womb, birth, new forms). Uva thus implies the intoxication of new forms, the pleasure and disorienting quality of this music, the ferment of its creation, and the birth of its reception through the ear." - Richard di Santo.

"A brand new hotshot Tokyo label. This is a wonderful 3 band split featuring 20-ish minute contributions from BCM (in guitar vs crockery mode), the macro/micro field recording whizzkid, Esosteel, and a new chap round these parts, Doe, who go down deeeeep with some truly astounding drone-swuzz. A lovely aquisition indeed and NO, its not a CDR in case you are wondering." - 20 City.
