Title: Live 03.01.86
Format: 10"
Label: Crippled Intellect
Country: USA
Price: $16.50
"Also by Zev, but from a historical perspective is a really beautiful 10": packed inside two metal plates which are stamped with Zev and the copynumber (of a total edition of 333 copies). ..this 10" features recordings made at the N.A.M.E. Gallery in Chicago in 1986. On the first side there is a rhythmic piece, which doesnt sound like it is kept in the same rhythm, but rather like an exploration of the sounds metal on metal can produce. Side B start with slow rumbling of metal sheets being rubbed with balls which built in a peaceful way. The second piece is fast drumming on metal piece - maybe better known as Zev trademark playing. A fine addition to the already vast catalogue of material by Zev of which much is no longer available. It could also serve as a fine introduction to his work, in case you missed him out in the eighties." - FdW. Insert tip-in signed by Z EV. Due to weight this counts as 5 items when figuring postage.

Format: Mag
Label: S-S

Price: $4.00
"Z Gun is a new print zine created by Scott Soriano (S-S Records/Terminal Boredom) and Ryan Wells (man about town) because they felt that there was a criminal lack of readable zines, especially one that covered the underground & experimental rock & roll.. They used several Search & Deastroy, Forced Exposure, etc. as templates and got contributions from Monty Buckles (The Lamps), Sean Wright, Min Yee (A Frames), Jacques Amsellem (Volt)., and others. The first issue includes intervies with and stuff on the Brainbombs, Pink Reason, Not Not Fun Records, SFTRI, SF Art Punk, Black Humor, and tons of record reviews. It is 40 pages tabloid size." - Z Gun. Highly recommended!

Title: Dance Party Album
Format: LP
Label: Cititrax
Country: USA
Price: $21.00
"The first release on NYC based label, Cititrax, is a re-issue of Z-Factors Dance Party Album (originally released in 1984, 500 copies). Fronted by Jesse Saunders and Vince Lawrence, Z-Factor formed in Chicago in 1982, at the very beginning of the house era. Comes with a retro style ?12″ poster & pressed on 160 gram vinyl. ESSENTIAL!
Hugely influenced by the Hot Mix 5 radio shows on WBMX, Z-Factor incorporated European synth-driven sounds that theyd heard on the radio with 808 rhythm tracks. This disco: the rhythms, the basslines, the spirit, made by amateurs was to become "house". Farley Jackmaster Funk recalls the early Chicago scene: "We started experimenting, playing with drum machines. Jesse Saunders was on board with me at the Playground at the time, and he was a musician. In the early days, the kick drum and the electric tom-toms of the 808 was enough to make people dance without even putting any music to it. So a lot of the stuff was just beat tracks in the beginning. Then we came to steal everybodys basslines. See, all we ever did was regurgitate disco again by just stealing everybodys music. Because all the original house stuff that came out was somebody elses bassline." But when drum and bass patterns once played by skilled musicians were copied on cheap synths that sounded like the real instruments, they didnt seem old or stolen. Stripped of their songs, these recycled riffs sounded alien and new, like raw, minimal messages transmitted from another world. It was only a matter of time before tracks started to appear on vinyl, and since Lawrences father owned Mitchbal Records, the group had their opportunity to release what is now known as the first full length house album. Nowadays, original copies of the Dance Party Album are very rare, and therefore expensive. And so we present to you the reissue of this important record." -Cititrax. Sidelabel of Minimal Wave.

Title: Tranz Portal-Emissions
Format: LP
Label: Mistake By the Lake
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
Edition of 200 hand stamped one sided records. “It all started, like most good things, in the late 70s. Peter Z.O. formed the American Industrial outfit Z.O. VOIDER just along the same time Robert Turman was leaving the group he co-founded with Boyd Rice, NON. It wasnt until around 1983 when the two collided, with Turman joining Z.O. Voider. A couple of recordings and a few shows later and the group went on hiatus. Fast forward 30 some odd years. A trip out west for Turman resulted in the first live show Z.O. Voider had done in 25 years. This is the recording of that fateful and historic night. 23 minutes of classic industrial by 2 innovators, masters and founders (in America) of the genre. Atmospheric, noisy, it wouldnt be out of place in the best of Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire but also stands completely on its own. What sounds like a piece the duo rehearsed for years and was just releasing live, is actually an improve jam. Im still trying to wrap my head around that. A timeless recording, and were beyond honored to share it with you now!!” - Mistake By the Lake.

Title: Belinda
Format: Double LP
Label: Subliminal Sounds
Country: Sweden
Price: $46.00
"Deluxe limited edition of 500 copies 2LP in a gatefold sleeve. This is the ultimate Swedish early 70s underground psych-funk erotica groove record! Yes, youve heard about the Swedish sin but heres the ultimate proof. Not only were the hippies practicing free love but they recorded some dirty music, too. In the early 70s, legendary outsider artist genius/madman Tom Zacharias, together with the cream of Swedish studio musicians, some beautiful Swedish hippie nymphs and a bunch of drugged-out freaks, recorded two ultra-rare LPs called Belinda and The Daughters Of Belinda, both of which are now mega-rare collectors items that never turn up, even in Sweden. These two masterpieces, with their XXX-rated lyrics, were recorded with both Swedish and English lyrics but only the Swedish language versions were ever released. Even though ads were released in both Screw magazine and Mayfair, the English language versions were kept in the can. Here are both versions plus some real sleazy bonus tracks that were not on the CD edition plus extended liner notes re-telling the previously-untold story of how this recording came to be. Great, groovy, funky acid erotica with loads of gurgling fuzz/wah-wah guitars, booming bass, wicked drum beats and over-the-top XXX erotic lyrics." -Subliminal Sounds.

Title: Musica Per Un Anno
Format: CD
Label: Mazagran
Country: Italy
Price: $17.00
"Musica Per Un Anno is a pivotal project by Italian pioneer of electronic music Enore Zaffiri. In 1968, Zaffiri devised a project to create music for each hour of the year, by providing precise instructions to organize various layers of sinusoidal sounds. Working in isolation but ideally sharing the same attitude of La Monte Youngs approach to sound in time and space of those same years, Zaffiri created some tape versions of his masterpiece. The version presented on this album is a radically pure digital implementation of one hour of Musica Per Un Anno, and has been realized by Andrea Valle in strict cooperation with Zaffiri, faithfully respecting the composers original, abstract project." - Magazgran. Enore Zaffiri on the composition: "Electronic music for the sonorization of environments. It is music in time, designed for the duration of one year. The sound event changes imperceptibly but continuously in relation to months, days, hours, minutes. Every moment has its own unique music that blends with the light and the surrounding atmosphere. It is a presence. It is a music that should not impose itself, that should not distract or daze, that should not force the user to immobility. Being music in time, without beginning or end, it is always important at any time you want to listen to. It is a music that responds to the needs of the contemporary man that, while visiting an exhibition or a museum, absorbs multiple experiences addressing appropriately and actively the cultural needs of our time." - Mazagran.

“Early pioneers of the UK industrial music scene, Zahgurim were formed in 1983 by Paul Ackerley and William Vince and were associated with the iconic Temple Ov Psychick Youth. Recorded on October 24th and 25th, 1984, Moral Rearmament was the first and subsequently only vinyl release by the group, and was released on the same year by the legendary Berlin record label Atonal Records. Title: Between The Infinite And The Finite
Format: LP
Label: Yew
Country: USA
Price: $25.00
"Between The Infinite And The Finite is Zaimphs first solo studio recording. Three new improvisations capture field recordings of stolen conversations, live radio and echoes that shimmer in a reverberant magnetic darkness of empty corridors. Spectral spaces entwine with the corporeal, amplified strings blossom in explosions, repetition and ominous tones of destruction and decline, slowly sequenced into a fragile space of beauty. The instinctive activity seeps into our deepest subconscious. Zaimph is the solo project of Marcia Bassett (Double Leopards, Hototogisu, GHQ). Since the mid-90s, Bassett has been exploring free-form improvisational music and spontaneous sound in her collaborations and solo work. Between The Infinite And The Finite is comprised of three new works using analog and digital synthesizers, processed voice, field recordings, piano and amplified strings. Recorded in the intimacy of Brooklyns Bunker Studios by Stephen Conover. A horror takes form in the living contradiction which exists in the clash between the infinite and the finite. Everything thats here exists. Artwork by Marcia Bassett. Edition of 300." - Yew.

Marcia Bassett has tread the waters of noise pysch drone and continues to defy the categories. a dark psychadelic guitar wash peaks its head out of the smoldering coals that could have been released on the mighty slaughter productions death industrial temple from Italy. further morbidity croaks from the slicing vocals of a distraught entity being ripped from one dimension to the other... and rather enjoying her ordeal. light the candles and burn the incense.... Title: Imagine Yourself Here...
Format: LP
Label: Yew
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
"Imagine Yourself Here....is the inaugural release on Marcia Bassetts new label YEW. The cover is a parody advertisement taken from an ad for luxury condos in the heart of Williamsburg Brooklyn. The promise of authenticity and Bohemia turned into pricey real estate. Bassetts dense hypnotic soundscapes recontextualize this superficial advertising to create an otherwordly existence. Side a opens out from metronomic foreboding into the whispering night-processes, before breaking apart under mesmeric vocal laments and fractured rhythms of dark space. Side bs woven textures blend with languorous insistent variations exploring the inside-outside dialectic of perception. Edition of 300 in full color sleeves with insert." - Yew.

Title: Serpents Bite
Format: CD
Label: Heavy Blossom
Country: USA
Price: $11.00
"Zaïmphs first CD release on her own label Heavy Blossom. Serpents Bite is made up of 8 separate pieces of vapory splendor, pierced metallic sounds, flickering radiance, and exquisite anguish. Culled from the Zaimph archives and recorded between 2005 - 2006; two previously released CDR tracks, now re-edited, rest aside six unreleased tracks. Multiple amplifiers channel dense, 3-dimensional sound played live with no overdubs. This is organic darkness. Grave-vaults of guitar tunnel through distorted clouds of smoke rising from the watery abyss. Vocals of dissolving thoughts recite mysterious incantations. De-tuned piano recordings and infectious drum machine beats dissolve through phantom empires of multiple effects. Complete derangement of the senses. The entirety was mastered by Christelle Gualdi at Loosduinseweg No. 9. Recorded primarily in England, with the exception of tracks 4 & 7, these recordings are as much of a reflecting back as a pulling towards -- Agrippas Mirror to an unseen Universe. The fox hunted and revered wears a golden breast of jewels reciting from Wordsworth via de Quincey: Fabric it seemd of diamond, and of gold, with alabaster domes, and silver spires.... Settle into the tranquility of repose. Sound is fractured oscillations." -Heavy Blossom

"marcia bassett of double leopards, hototogisu, ghq, fame on her first proper solo full length has given us one of our favorites in the history of hospital productions. sexual infinty stands refreshingly organized into six escalating pieces of her signature guitar, voice, and electronic moodscapes entrancing the listener with sinister seduction. comparisons to early 80s power electronics and industrial acts as uncommunity, mauthausen orchestra and ramleh reside in the underbelly of zaïmphs ability to generate ominous, gritty, and doom laden atmosphere cloaked in a thick lush drone. what begins with raw ethereal guitar shadows of longing delight closes with vital gripping electronic tension." - Hospital Productions.

Title: The Undetermined Dyad
Format: LP
Label: Volcanic Tongue
Country: UK
Price: $26.00
"Edition of 300 copies, with sleeves featuring original artwork by Marcia Bassett, all silkscreened by Alan Sherry of SIWA and with a full-color insert. Expertly mastered by Tom Carter of Charalambides. Zaïmph is working cover for the solo experiments of Marcia Bassett, formerly of Un and Double Leopards, currently of GHQ and Hototogisu. The Undetermined Dyad functions as the fulcrum of her career to date, looking back towards her experiments in group levitation with Double Leopards while extrapolating on her recent solo work. Most of all its a guitar record and one that sits comfortably alongside previous six-string monoliths like John Faheys Days Have Gone By, Donald Millers A Little Treatise On Morals and Masayuki Takayanagis Live At Zojoji Hall while sounding quite unlike any of them. Bassetts re-imagining of the instrument pushes it to the point of almost translucence, where the physical fact of the guitar itself is almost completely subsumed by echo, F/X, loops and the kind of improvisatory logic that prizes infinite expansion and organic growth over repeated tropes or riffs. Aspects of the first side -- the eerie ghost voices, the deep space echo -- recall the electrified ritual of nomadic Japanese avant gardists Taj Mahal Travellers but more immediately it sounds like a magnification of her individual contribution to Double Leopards, generating towers of electricity that move from malevolent arcs of anti-gravity and spumes of throttled single notes through to deep wormholes that do violence to feeble notions of time and space. The B-side is a little more aggressive, with the tactile sound of strings on pick-ups anchoring a gorgeous wash of all-consuming drone and garage band fuzz before Bassett cranks the tone into realms of total sonic reducer. If your concept of the guitar begins with Jimi Hendrix setting the fucking thing on fire and ends with the sound of voltage completely liberated from any kind of tonal or harmonic anchor whatsoever, then this record may well be the girl youve been praying for. But you wont wanna introduce her to your parents." --David Keenan, Glasgow, April 2008.

Title: Two Aspects Divided
Format: LP
Label: Yew
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"Two Aspects Divided is the fifth release on Zaimphs own Yew label. Composed of two side-length pieces, Zaimph illuminates harshness through two massive movements. Side a, New Exclusive Digital Stonehenge, is a ruptured circuit of distorted control patterns. A demolition of experience melts into liquid sound, always evading linearity, forging an allegorical bridge between an outer world of reality and the truth of a digital inner space. Living Fiction on side b follows a remote dream of death skulls and industrial nihilism, its structure and processes constantly sabotaged by chaotic deviations and cold incantations. "In the past Marcia Bassett(of Double Leopards, GHQ) has proved her versaitility under the Zaimph name; from the depraved feedback and tone fury of her "Sexual Infinity" CD on Hospital Productions to her delicate electric guitar and vocals waves on the "Mirage of The Other" LP on Gypsy Sphinx.  This untitled 7" release further proves this fact by recalling her earliest roots in the Siltbreeze band UN: vocal mantras and delicate strumming are placed over a hypnotically evolving base of looped piano, feedback, and strings.  The end result is something beautiful that twists the lines of classification, picking up little points of reference from her past bands and laying out a path towards the future.  In an edition of 500 7"s in proprinted full color foldover sleeves with art by Marcia.  Mastered by Josh Stevenson." - Arbor

Format: Cass
Label: Old Gold
Country: USA
Price: $4.50
"Sounds like Zandosis first PSF release, just in time for 1974. Les Rallizes Denudes plus Kaoru Abe and a weather damaged reel of ?-inch tape. Merzbow, Nihilist Spasm Band, Blowhole and Gorgoroth are not so much analogues as they are (lost) reference points. The ancient easterners used to believe that when they ate animals, they took on their spirit, their properties. Here, Zandosis does that very thing by ingurgitating the zeitgeist of Cages "1st Construction in Metal," Merzbows "Rainbow Electronics," and the writings of Emile Cioran. Like Cioran---and Suzuki, even---Zandosis are adept at unclothing despair and laying bare its humor. If chasing ghosts is supposed to take you somewhere, then its to a Cambodian whorehouse where the porch folk sit all day and watch townies get mauled by rabid dogs. Think on this; add some teriyaki, sake and warm Budweiser and youll know where theyre comin from. Highly recommended." - Copper Green, 2004.

Title: Z vs. W
Format: 7"

"In January of 2000, we got together with no pre-conceived notion of what wed sound like. T-Def (Charlie Parker, Free Bass, "Destroy All Music" on WREK FM) was known to be loud, frantic, noisy and deliberately so. Stewart (formerly of William Carlos Williams, Lustmordem, At War with Satan, and PissChrist) played drums with a tiny Han Bennink on one shoulder and a tiny Dave Lombardo on the other. I had an alto saxophone, a microphone and a borrowed amp. Together, the sky would be the limit or the sky would fall. Fast forward to March of 2003. That motherfucker George W. Bush is sending the country (and its young men and women) to fight a pre-emptive war for no real good reason. Wed been playing very free, early-FMP/Haters style music, and focused our sonic output on those pushing this invasion. The result was about 15 short bursts of energy directed at 15 members of the Project for the New American Century. It felt good. Damn good, in fact. And it sounded good. The next time we played live, we played this new hardcore set. The lazy art crowd in the house enjoyed it. We dug it, too, sent it to the Czech Republic, pressed it onto 220 heavy vinyl records, wrapped them in print shop cleaner paper, and are unleashing it on the world. Chris may list the song titles. He may not. Either way: "Colin Powell Uncle Tom" was omitted by the pressing plant, so if you want to hear that song, gather two of your friends, count to four real fast and start screaming liar and/or fucker or any combination of the two while your friends unleash a torrent of rage. When youre done, say sell out." - Marshall Avett; Old Gold.

Title: Z=7L
Format: LP
Label: Replica
Country: France
Price: $24.00
"For those not familiar with Zao, they were the first true Magma spin-off band, formed by reedsman Yochko Seffer and pianist Francois "Faton" Cahen, at a time when their creative role within that band was diminishing and all the writing duties were being taken over by Christian Vander... a long story for another day. While strongly rooted in the zeuhl tradition of Magma, Seffer and Cahen brought forth their unique musical vision in this 1973 release. They wanted to give the bands music an original color by integrating the most particular of instruments, the human voice. Mauricia Platons wordless vocals go beyond Magma and are a perfect accompaniment to Zaos singular form of jazz. Her voice, Jean-Yves Rigauds violin, and Seffers soprano sax intertwine through a complex matrix of rhythm and sound. At times the music and singing are dark and aggressive like Magma and later Shub Niggurath. At others it is light and airy. There is plenty of space in the music for improvisation at all levels, and Zao are the masters of that craft, as evidenced on spirited and energetic tracks like Ronach and Atart. It doesnt get much better than this, folks!" - Lysergic Sound Distributors.

Spanning five years and two CDs, this initial release from the fictional collective of Zashiki-Warashi is sewn together with appearances by members of NNCK, Izititiz, Enos Slaughter, Floriculture and TEST. The music shrieks, drones, floats, superimposes unlikely realities and outlines a subconscious narrative inspired by travels ranging from a South Carolina swamp to a Moroccan graveyard. A mix of shortwave transmissions, ukuleles, bowed and plucked strings, distant drums and voices, nearby birds and guitars, chanting crowds and not quite discernable sounds recorded in places as diverse as a Texas parking lot, Harlems Hinthouse, Roulette Intermedium and a Virginia old folks home. "ZDRASTVOOTIEs 2 is a perplexing album. It folds the far corners of some of the worlds most out-there progressive rock with deep, deliberate singer-songwriter type vocals and lyrics. It is both a collection of confusing, dark and fragmented meditations and defiantly odd music, yet it is far more accessible and playful than one would expect. The recorded debut of DREW ADAMs vocals is imposing and grand-he sings like a crooner. The album is still marked by the groups gifts as songwriters and players, as the songs are disjointed and the arrangements abrasive. The material is achingly beautiful, and lovely melodies appear throughout the release. This new album will sound, to most, like no other music on Earth." - Holy Mountain.

The LP was pressed in an edition of 350 copies to be sold on the bands first tour of the United States and Canada. Silkscreened covers and a fully illustrated comic book insert complete the package." - Holy Mountain.

This new configuration recorded an album of material that was eventually scrapped because their sound had morphed into something different by the time everything was ready to go. Zdrastvootie are currently a very focused entity, with increasingly complex songs a la King Crimson, Hampton Grease Band or Doc at the Radar Station-era Magic Band. While they have recently added a bassist, and guitar-player DREW ADAMS has begun to sing, Zdrastvootie still orbits this zone and will continue to until you are very aware that they practice all the time." - Holy Mountain.

Title: Chill Wave
Format: LP

Price: $19.00
"Feeding Tube Records is proud to present ZEBU!s eighth record. The basic duo consists of Steve DAgostino and Ted Lee, but they are neither averse to allowing guest members to pop in for a few shots, nor are they afraid to allow their releases to follow certain semi-conceptual boundaries. This, this one -- if actually categorizable as anything -- serves as ZEBU!s surf album. With saxophone by Peter Van Siclen, and bass by either Jonathan Granoff or Stephen Surrett, ZEBU! creates an atmosphere not unlike the woozy venues frequented by Eric Von Zipper in William Ashers mid-60s series of beach movies. There are a couple of slow tunes tossed in for Annette, but the large part of this stuff is classicist American instrumental ho-daddyism. The structure of the album is typically whacked -- snippets of Volcano Suns-like indie-rock and semi-abstract power blurts pop up here and there -- but the semiotic heft of the record is shockingly straight-ahead. Its almost as though these guys were trying to figure out how to make teenagers spin their pony skirts the way they once did. Catch a wave and youre sitting on top of the world. Honest." -Feeding Tube.

Title: Kurdish Melodies On Zorna
Format: CD
Label: Bo Weavil
Country: UK
Price: $16.50
"Zadik Zecharias zorna playing is a powerful relentless blast of beauty. The drone-like qualities that engulf both the listener and player are unyielding in their intensity from start to finish. The instrument, well known in the Middle East, particularly in Kurdistan, Iraq and Turkey, is similar in sound and intensity to the Scottish bagpipes. Zadik takes few pauses for breath, but wildly plays a continuous flow of melody weaving around the Dola drum that provides a pulsating rhythm. Zadik Zecharia was born in the Sharnash Village in Kurdistan and moved to Israel in 1950. Zadik has dedicated his whole life to playing the zorna -- a traditional, trumpet-like instrument (but longer and narrower), that has been identified with the Kurdish people. There are two kinds of melodies: Chopie and Shechni. The Chopie are the fast melodies, tunes for dancing with the high notes of the Zorna. The Dola drum always accompanies the Zorna on Chopie tunes. The Shechni are slower melodies in the background, sad tunes that are usually played while the celebrators are sitting around the table. It reminds them of their Motherland, Kurdistan, and serves as an intro to the partying and dancing. (Tzadik Zecharia, Jerusalem 2005) First released on cassette in the 1980s, Bo Weavil reissue this with a beautiful digi-pack designed sleeve. Limited to 550." - Bo Weavil.

Title: Il Cerchio Degli Antichi Colori
Format: LP + 7"
Label: Black Sweat
Country: Italy
Price: $33.00
"Black Sweat Records present a reissue of Zeits second album Il Cerchio Degli Antichi Colori, originally released in 1981. With Il Cerchio Degli Antichi Colori, Zeit re-propose their own vision of a new cultural multi-geographical mosaic without boundaries. The sound confirms the inspired and eclectic vein of previous work, suggesting a greater conviction and maturity of intent. The arrangements tend to dilate more alchemical and hypnotic sequences, while the range of inspirations (Balkan music, Greek, Turkish, Persian, African, etc.) and the poly-instrumentalism is more precious and varied. Decisively more experimental compositions such as "Gli Antichi Colori", "Nuovo Orizzonte", or "Kalimba", are indicative of an unparalleled executive expertise that flows into meditative and introspective delights by resonances now more obscure or solar. The compresence of popular European and Middle-East atmospheres act as a strong reminder to the world of dance, suggesting once again the charm of the meeting between East and West, in view of brotherhood and solidarity among peoples. So, the "Circle" relieves itself almost like a sound tale of distant and ancient Byzantine, Arab, and Christian novels, according to a nomadic spirit that finds in music the preferred journey to joy and love. This reissue includes a 7" with two unreleased live tracks, further enriching the repertoire of one of the most original group that Italy has ever known." - Black Sweat.

Title: Un Giorno In Una Piazza Del Mediterraneo
Format: LP
Label: Black Sweat
Country: Italy
Price: $26.00
"Black Sweat Records present a reissue of Zeits Un Giorno In Una Piazza Del Mediterraneo, originally released in 1979. In the late 70s, the Italian music scenes renewed interest in sound research involved a stimulating fusion of popular elements, jazz improvisation, and suggestions of the middle-oriental classical heritage. Starting from the experience of Aktuala, the idea of a common "Mediterranean air" that could compare and harmonize rhythms and timbres of various regions, enlivened a large number of musicians. In this context, it also placed the short history of Zeit and one of their main member Andrea Tamassia, who played and recorded with Aktuala. Un Giorno In Una Piazza Del Mediterraneo, their first album, seems to be a continuation of Aktualas music. It presents a compendium of styles and shapes, a collection of letters and visual notes from various places (Greece, Italy, Turkey, Hungary, Maghreb, Balcan Area, etc.), rearranged in the form of a hypothetical diary, in order to create an unknown narrative scenario. In the music of Zeit, there are no formalistic or philological purposes, but it triumphs with an attitude of imaginative incorporation that is always changing. The rich poly-instrumentalism brings the rhythms of dance and ancient melodies, but also results in a palette of more abstract and ecstatic sounds, with rare experimental lyricism that approaches the Florentine ensemble to the significant European experiences of The Incredible String Band or Third Ear Band." - Black Sweat.

Title: Grand Orchestra
Format: CD
Label: Tochnit Aleph
Country: Germany
Price: $18.00
2013 release. "Grand Orchestra, for mixed orchestra and bagpipes. Composed and directed by Reinhold Friedl. Performed by Zeitkratzer & guests at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin on August 21, 2011. "The score for Grand Orchestra has been developed for musicians, laymen, old people, children, adolescents, for anyone who likes to join in. Grand Orchestra is not for education. Its not about explaining, intellectual understanding or the training of cultural values; rather its about having faith in the abilities and intuition of the players and their performance. The musicians of Zeitkratzer and additional guests took over the voice-leading of the instrumental groups, distributed in the space and enabling their amplification. In this way it was possible to create not only pure intensity but also dense and complex sound aggregates, through the blurring of playing techniques inside the different instrumental groups. Which orchestra is capable of playing such complex sounds as this group of forty wind players, chorally building a simultaneous crescendo of breaths? Who can play more ecstatically and wilder than a group of sixty musicians, playing against and doing their best to keep up with a Scottish bagpipe ensemble? Its precisely due to unclearly played single sounds, unfolding from an orchestra dominated by amateurs. Unique sounds with a complex character that no professional orchestra could reproduce." -- Reinhold Friedl, from the liner notes. Zeitkratzer is sound made visible, tangible, bodily and a truly unforgettable corporal experience of live music. The physicality of sound is celebrated through extended instrumental techniques, mutual understanding and amplification of traditional instruments. A midpoint between instrumental and electronic music turns out to be more bizarre and surprising than either of these. Zeitkratzer, founded in 1999, gathers nine musicians, light and sound engineers living in different European cities from Amsterdam to London to Oslo meeting for working phases in Berlin. They have performed critically acclaimed versions of classical music by composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Helmut Lachenmann and James Tenney, as well as orchestral versions of electronic/noise music by Whitehouse, Merzbow, John Duncan, Dror Feiler and Lou Reeds Metal Machine Music." - Tochnit Aleph.

"180 gram pressing, gatefold sleeve, limited to 500, includes download code. On his second release with Zeitkratzer, Keiji Haino concentrates solely on his voice. No electronics are used except for amplification. Nevertheless, this live recording is even more radical than the first one. Radical is the concentration on the very limited but frenetic musical material, worked out in detail, which is rarely heard in the noise context -- enabling Keiji Haino to sit on it, fly over, to merge or just to oppose. Zeitkratzers amplified instruments, played with extended techniques as developed by the group and its outstanding musicians over more than a decade and Hainos incredible richness in voice timbres and noises complement each other perfectly. Its one of the closest and most natural cooperations Zeitkratzer ever had. Wild and beautiful. Shouting, scratching, screaming, piping, chattering, crying, rumbling, oscillating, roaring, clashing, juttering, tinkling, singing, ... and at the end, its hilarious, powerful music, pure noise and pure melody. As the Chicago Reader noted: "The supernova finally occurs!" and The Wire agreed: "A real highlight, with Zeitkratzer enfolding Keiji Haino in its grasp like some tentacular kraken of the deep. Haino effectively becomes another member of the group." Rock-a-Rolla cheered: "Forceful and utterly compelling!" Nothing left to say than: listen! "Cracked song poems from a basement in Chicago with no lights on. Zelienople create acoustic improvisations that have as much in common with Thuja as they do the late period work of Talk Talk. Slowly drifting guitar tones run head first into blown out harmonium drones and the broken edges of homemade instruments. These songs arent drifting as much as they are lost at sea. "Hailing from Chicago, Zelienople have been etching out a place for themselves in the Windy City for the past five years. Constant collaborators with Souled Americans Scott Tuma, this quartet mixes ghostly song structures with ambient drones better than just about anyone. With recent releases on Time-Lag, New Zealands Pseudoarcana, and Tarentels Root Strata imprint, the boys of Zelienople are rising like vines toward the canopy. Stone Academy picks up where 2005s brilliant Ink (recently reissued on CD by Loose Thread Recordings) left off. It balances the simple beauty of guitar-based songs with overwhelming, dark drones. The combination is as powerful as it is intricate. Each note, each chord is carefully chosen and perfectly placed; they never take too long or push too much. The attention to detail is magnificent. Zelienople have mastered the art of making expansive, luminescent drones sound as organic as the soil beneath your feet. Stone Academy reverberates like its planted deep inside a lost cavern, hidden miles beneath the surface waiting for excavation. With rich textures and challenging soundscapes, Stone Academy is a wholly satisfying listening experience. The darkness is only a canvas for the light of these compositions to shine through. Zelienople offer up one of the years finest aural adventures." - Digitalis.

Title: The World Is A House On Fire
Format: LP
Label: Type
Country: UK
Price: $21.00
"Veterans of the sprawling Chicago music scene, Zelienople have carved out a unique sound over their album releases. The World is a House on Fire is the latest chapter in the bands story, and frames their music more succinctly than ever before. Mike Weis (percussion), Matt Christensen (vocals, guitar) and Brian Harding (bass, saxophone) managed to perfect brooding, melancholy doom-pop on their last full-length Give it Up (TYPE 054CD), and this latest LP finds the band in a more evocative mood. The trio have utilized dream-pop tropes before, but in the first bars of opener "The Southern," there is no doubt that the haunted Americana of the bands previous recordings has been swathed in a haze of drifting synthesizer tones and echoing organ drones (played by occasional member Donn Ha). The simplistic beauty of Slowdive and early Verve is distilled to a vapor as it drifts into Christensens characteristic vocals and Weis soft, subtle percussion. This isnt pop music, but the skeletons of pop are just about audible, enshrined in something far more beautiful and much more delicate. The World is a House on Fire is a blissful and utterly enveloping addition to the Zelienople canon, and while it might be more subtle than their previous records, it stays with you longer than you might expect. "Haunting" doesnt even begin to describe it. Limited vinyl pressing of 700 copies, cut at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin." -Type.

"Hans Rudolf Zeller (b. 1934 in Berlin) is best-known for being a music theorist, essayist and writer on contemporary music. His essays on Dieter Schnebel, Iannis Xenakis, microtonality etc., often published in the German journal "Musik-Konzepte", are deemed being among the best ever written on new music. Apart from that, he has since the 1960s maintained his own artistic work, most of which has not been published or only seen the light of day in private micro-editions. Zellers work often involves combining multiple dimensions (texts, vocals, visual projections) into one cinematological literature. This LP edition is an attempt at collecting various elements of Zellers work. All recordings have been made within the last 10 years, yet many of the underlying concepts date back to the 1960s or 1970s. Contained are two scriptophonies (works combining writing and vocals, with the notion of writing being extended in ways not unlike those Carlfriedrich Claus and Gerhard Rühm have shown), two vocal improvisations, one piece of Tesa sounds (sounds produced by adhesive tape), and one piece for horn. The full-color sleeve and inner sleeve show Tesa pictures made between 1961 and 1970, and one collage from 2010. There is one insert with detailed liner notes by Zeller in German and English, and another insert showing a relic of a scriptophony. Edition of 300." - Edition Telemark.

Price: $22.00
“Zephyr in the Swamp (Brendan Coyle and Colin Hughes) originated from the Wirral, England-based synth trio The Games. The duos friend Martin Graham joined briefly as a vocalist, but after he passed away the band continued as a duo. This album contains hypnotic, moody, melodic instrumentals created after the breakup of The Games, between 1981 and 1983. They created the music at Melva Rooms and The Loft (spaces provided by the late Mr. Whooley in Oxton, Wirral) with a Roland SH-09, a Boss Dr. Rhythm, and a Roland Organ/Strings 09, using sound-on-sound echo effects through an Akai 4000D and triggering the drum machine into various patterns. The recordings, some of which the band didnt realize existed, were unearthed from cassette and reel-to-reel tapes and were extremely fragile -- in some cases unsalvageable. And so Zephyr in the Swamp took the best tracks from the collection and had them mastered for vinyl.”

"The sole 1973 album on 700 West by the Indianapolis outfit featuring the Zerfas brothers David and Herman, is one of the best and probably best-known self-pressed U.S. psych records ever to have seen the light of day. All the material is self-penned, which comes as a surprise, as the tracks are all uniformly strong, with lots of keyboards, ring modulators, heavy reverb, backwards vocals, random sound effects, and some outstanding harmonies. One pundit was moved to write: "...a stunning psych album [which] can only be described as what might have happened if The Beatles had pushed the psychedelic experiments of Revolver into late-60s/early-70s territory," which gives you some idea of what this albums all about. As a fan wrote after discovering the band for the first time, "...as the prelude to the first track slowly faded up -- a wondrously thick mix of layered backwards and forwards voices and sounds -- I remember thinking that this might just be the best thing Id ever heard. Across the two sides you can get some sense of these musicians laboring for hours in a small studio to get just the right blend of harmony, guitar, drums and organ to reach for that fleeting glimpse of something larger than we are. This is a great LP." And really, theres not much more you can add to that, is there? Pressed on 180 gram vinyl." -Phoenix

"It came out of nowhere in 1982, this punk rock/hardcore fireball with the bright yellow sleeve. In one sense, The Zero Boys Vicious Circle was yet another example of how U.S. punk seemed to peak coast to coast that year. But unlike most coastal punk, the Zero Boys were pointing the way to a scene that could accommodate heaping helpings of melody, intelligence, and rock n roll sus, not just turbo-charged ferocity. From 1979 into 83, the Indianapolis based ZBs were the finest hardcore blitz in the Midwest if not all the lower 48 states. Proof is Vicious Circle and the two decades since of copyists, bootleggers, practitioners and reunion concert pogoers. Though before and after that LPs 1982 release they recorded the Livin in the 80s 7", songs for three comps and released the post-mortem History Of... cassette revealing their transformation into a toured band warming to the metaphysical and their demise while still waving torches of rock n roll panache. ... Yeah, they played shows with Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys, Subhumans, and others but in Terry "Hollywood" Howes guitar there was harmonious terror and unstoppable cadence. Terrys licks and chops -- a leap beyond two or three chord punk -- offered a zone and measured count for drummer Mark Cutsinger and bassist David "Tufty" Clough, a rhythm unit in par with the Minutemen if not The Meters, to run lines like quicksilver. Meanwhile, frontman, Paul "Z" Mahern provides a constant wash from beginning to end. When the Ramones lost it, the Zero Boys found it; Adding a slam brigade fist to the Blitzkrieg Beat. The Zero Boys managed to come with one of the best early 80s punk records, or one of the best records ever, period. Between Vicious Circle and History Of, the entire recorded output of this legendary Midwest punk bands original line up is, finally, collected.” - Jack Rabid and Eric Weddle.

"Sub Rosa presents works by industrial music pioneer, ZEV. The physical vibrations of the objects in his works with both text and sound has been influenced by the Middle Eastern mystical system best known as Kabbalah, as well as -- but not limited to -- African, Afro-Caribbean and Indonesian rhythms, musics and cultures. He has studied Ewe music, Balinese gamelan, and Indian tala. From 1959-1965 he studied drumming with Arnie Frank, then Chuck Flores and then Art Anton at Drum City in Van Nuys, CA. In 1963, he abandoned Judaism and began his life-long relationship with World religions and esoteric systems. 1964 saw the beginning of his initial attempts at writing poetry and explorations of both two and three-dimensional artforms. After studying at CalArts from 1969-1970 with poets Emmett Williams and Michael S. Bell and writer/critic Sue-Ellen Case, he began producing works using the name S. Weisser, primarily concentrating on visual and sound poetries. In 1975, he was included in the "Second Generation" show at the Museum of Conceptual Art in San Francisco. In 1976 he moved from Los Angeles to the Bay Area, ending up with a storefront studio on MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, pretty much midway between the headquarters of the Black Panther Party, (who dissolved that year), and the Hells Angels (still extant). A primary reason for this move was his association with the San Francisco Alternative exhibition space La Mamelle (run by Carl Loeffler and Nancy Evans). In 1977 he presented his first solo percussion performance under the project title "Sound of Wind and Limb." In 1978 he began developing an idiosyncratic performance technique utilizing self-developed instruments formed from industrial materials such as stainless steel, titanium, and PVC plastics. Critic John Buckley described his performances in this era: "the instruments are collections of objects ... strung together with ropes and swung at varying speeds and directions to produce a fairly astonishing range of pitches and timbres. And the moves the guy goes through to manipulate these instruments are, for grace and athleticism, strong stuff. ZEV is also interesting for the close correlation of visual and musical aspects, since the physical vibrations of the objects you see are the same as those picked up by the ears as sound. Also, since the rhythms of the work are dictated by the performers every and any movement, an inevitable integrity unifies the act." Here are two pieces from the artists early sound experiments: "As," recorded in 1978 at the KPFK radio station in Los Angeles, and "If," recorded at Savoy Tivoli in San Francisco. On clear vinyl." -Sub Rosa

"ZEV completes an alchemical exploration of concord and dissonance that began with the cosmological equations of Sum Things (CSR 101CD, 2009) and then clasped the elemental quintet of air, water, fire, earth, and spirit in A Handful of Elements (CSR 182CD, 2013). Now, with Eleven Mirrors to the Light, ZEV plays with the intersection of light and dark, catching waves of luminescence between prisms and mirrors that fragment particles into shimmering washes of sound. ZEVs trademark percussion transforms into glistening soundscapes and drones, one part subterranean and another subatomic." - Cold Spring.

It features the original seven tracks from the vinyl plus six recodings entitled Reproduction and Decay of Spatial Relations made by Zev in May/June 2005. "Ziguri [tsiguri]": In the Mexican Tarahumara language the word for Peyote cactus, containing the hallucinogenic alkaloid mescaline. Günter Schickert has built a reputation and following amongst friends of psychedelic music. He and Manuel Göttsching pioneered the use of the echo guitar. The solo albums Samtvogel (1974) and Überfällig (1979) have attained cult status. In 1987 Schickert founded Ziguri Ego Zoo with Udo Erdenreich and Dieter Kölsch -- friends from the Berlin theater 100 Fleck, a musical theater project which soon evolved into the band with the name Ziguri. Ziguri initially rehearsed in SO36, the legendary punk club in Berlin-Kreuzberg (subsequently finding themselves entangled in the street riots on Oranien Strasse which were a regular occurrence at the time). Their first gigs took place in squats, at street parties or underground clubs, before graduating to venues like Tacheles, Der Eimer and Schokoladen. Ziguri continued playing in this format until 1997, after which only the theater project remained, lasting until 2002. The three band members went their separate ways in the years that followed, signing up to new bands. Kölsch played with Schickert in Ponyhof and with Erdenreich in the punk combo Hagel. Both used the same rehearsal space, so the trio often found themselves gathering around in the original line-up. One evening, the famous words were spoken: "Lets put the band together again." That was in 2011. And from the first moment on, it was like they have never been apart. Picking up exactly where they have left off, Kölsch and Erdenreich hammered out a driving rhythm and Schickert layered his unique echo patterns over the top. They road-tested their live set at two concerts with Damo Suzuki (Can). As Ziguri played further shows, it dawned on them that younger listeners had bolstered up their audience, strengthening the bands decision to revive the act. Ziguri enlisted Dirk Dresselhaus as producer, better known as artist Schneider TM. The album was recorded in Schneider TMs Zone studio in just three days.” - Bureau B.

Title: Electronic Calendar: The EMS Tapes
Format: Double CD
Label: Space Age
Country: UK
Price: $23.00
"Peter Zinovieff is one historys most enigmatic and influential electronic music composers. The EMS Tapes is the first complete retrospective of his earliest experiments in 1965 through to the dissolution of his studio and the bankruptcy of his company, EMS Synthesizers, in 1979. This deluxe two-CD set includes extensive liner notes, exclusive photos, and Zinovieffs own diary entries compiled by Sonic Boom aka Pete Kember. In 1964 Zinovieff sold his wifes wedding tiara to purchase the first computer housed on a private estate and converted his garden shed into the most advanced music studio in the world, housing 384 oscillators, as well as a collection of filters, noise generators, ring modulators, signal analyzers, and amplifiers. The center of the studio was the computer, which ran on on 8k of memory priced at £1/byte (£8000), allowing thousands of musical parameters to be sequenced several thousand times per second. Throughout the 1960s and 70s Zinovieffs studios became a place of pilgrimage for musicians looking to discover previously unheard sounds; Zinovieffs daughter Sofka recalls, "Id be having tea in the kitchen with my two younger brothers, when people like David Bowie, Paul McCartney, or Pink Floyd would pass by on their way to the studio." Other visitors included Kraftwerk, Klaus Schulze, King Crimson, Alan Sutcliffe, Hans Werner Henze, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, to name but a few. Electronic Calendar begins with "Chronometer 71," composed in the form of a graphical score by Harrison Birtwistle and created from recordings of Big Ben and the Wells Cathedral clock, sequenced by Zinovieffs computer to a pre-determined structure that controlled tape machines in a system resembling an early sampler. The piece was created in the second iteration of Zinovieffs studio, which was also home to the worlds first series of narrow filter bands used as a sound analysis system, recording the response of each filter to the applied signal; Zinovieff had created the worlds first vocoder. The second CD opens with Zinovieffs interpretation of "Agnus Dei," followed by "ZASP," a collaboration with Alan Sutcliffe. In 1967 "ZASP" won second prize at the IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing) Congress; Iannis Xenakis beat it out for first place. The CD closes with the last piece of music recorded in the EMS studio before it was destroyed by a flood in 1979; aptly titled "Nows the Time to Say Goodbye," it features interview fragments of Zinovieff fading in and out." - Space Age.

"As SF Weekly journalist Mike Rowell says, "Part comedy act, part psychodrama, the ZIP CODE RAPISTS were a volatile, often antagonistic duo who wreaked havoc on San Franciscos underground during the first half of the 90s. You never knew quite what to expect from guitarist JOHN SINGER and vocalist GREGG TURKINGTON, but they always challenged the conventions of what a band should be." From their supposed beginnings as a Doors cover band from Texas, to their shameful years of bloated excess, to their acrimonious breakup and inevitable decade-later reunion, this CD details the hope and anger, the trauma and triumph, of this  quintessentially American folk-punk combo. In addition to the Zip Code Rapists astonishing 1992 debut LP Sing and Play the Three Doctors and Other Sounds of Today, this CD compiles the overlong 7-inch The Man Cant Bust Our Music (1993) and the inexcusably short 12-inch 94124 (1995), all of which have been lovingly remastered for todays more discerning listener. This deluxe package also includes previously unheard outtakes and compilation tracks, four songs from an incendiary 1993 show at CBGB, and a touching tribute to Seals and Crofts from a 2006 reunion show. With the exception of 94124, none of this seminal material has ever been released on CD. And none of it was ever released on good-quality vinyl after competent mastering, either, so even if youre familiar with the original releases, youll be amazed by all the details you missed! Best of all, each CD comes with a FREE RUB-ON ZCR TATTOO, which can be worn for a day, or cherished for a lifetime." - Eabla.

"For our 50th label release, Permanent Records could not be MORE EXCITED to announce the 40th Anniversary reissue of Zippers self-titled LP from 1975!!!! You all know Fred Cole from Dead Moon. And yes, Pierced Arrows too! But preceding both of his more famous bands (and others like The Rats, etc, etc) was Zipper! Formed when Fred and Toody Cole returned to Portland, Oregon after homesteading in Alaska, Zipper was the beginning of both Whizeagle Records, their in-house label, and Freds long illustrious DIY RnR career. Equal parts acid fried psych, raw blistering guitar fireworks, proto-punk pummel and bone crunchin heavy rock machismo, Zipper was Freds headfirst dive back into the rock world after his disillusionment with the garage scene post Weeds / Lollipop Shoppe. No managers to tell him what songs to play or what sound was in. No label to fight with. Just Fred Cole and a close knit group of fellow disenchanted rock n rollers (Lorry Erk, Jim Roos and Greg Shadoan), playing their in-the-red whiskey and cigarette fueled music as loud and furious as can be!!! So for those into scorching Acid Archives psych rock, Zipper is yer next fix! And for those those Fred and Toody Cole completists, this reissue is ESSENTIAL, as originals go for as much as $250!!!! For everyone else, if you like yer rock n roll, RAW, MEAN AND UNHINGED, just like it should be." - Permanent.

"ZNR was the French duo of Hector Zazou and Joseph Racaille (hence, Zazou n Racaille) active in the mid to late 70s. Their 1976 debut, Barricade 3, is an anti-pop masterpiece that truly defies categorization; it makes perfect sense that ZNR appears on the infamous Nurse With Wound list. Featuring an array of seemingly dichotomous instruments (piano, synthesizers, woodwinds, electric guitar, and more) as well as genuinely bizarre vocals, the album is composed of fifteen odd experiments using a loose framework of analog electronics, avant-garde rock, jazz influences, and post-structuralist études. As The Shadow Rings Graham Lambkin writes, The debut ZNR LP has long remained one of my all-time faves. A collision of eccentric Satie-esque miniatures, strange keyboard / synth explorations and the occasional song, delivered in a mixture of French and Spanish tongues. I always think of the creepy, over-ripe vocals on "Seynete" as one of the LPs most memorable moments, but there are many. Despite its schizophrenic mystique, Barricade 3 is very witty and surprisingly accessible with hints of Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, and Perrey-Kingsley. This long out-of-print vinyl reissue reproduces the original gatefold design including illustration by Don Van Vliet." - Superior Viaduct.

"Early in the Summer of 06, Clay Rubys Zodiac Mountain did a short U.S. tour, showering the people with roots rock, heavenly boogie, atmospheric spirituals, cryptic blues and the occasional classic cover tune. This incarnation of Zodiac Mountain was a collaboration between Clay Ruby and Wooden Wand, featuring jams with Nate Nelson (Mouthus, Religious Knives), Robert Beatty (Eyes and Arms of Smoke, Hair Police), and Maya Miller (Religious Knives, Double Leopards). 5 songs, over an hour of red, white and blue BLISS from two of the heaviest, gun toting, bourbon soaked, BBQ breathd road warriors east of the Mississippi. This material is a far departure from the intense heathen rituals and bleak folk songs of Zodiac Mountains "Lake Winnebago" demos, and nothing like the newest Zodiac Mountain recording project in progress, which is wrapping itself up like some kinda amphibious Crash Worship services. "Since her debut lp for Sacred Bones last summer, Zola Jesuss profile has grown exponentially. Her video for ??Clay Bodies? debuted on The Fader and her likeness was plastered all over the Internet. The Spoils made dozens of year-end lists including The Wire, Pitchfork, The Fader, and Dusted, and fans and critics alike now seem rabid for new material. So without further ado, we present Stridulum, the new, far less lo-fi 6-song EP from Nika Roza Danilova. Recording her vocals for the first time with professional instruments, Nikas voice is brought to the powerful forefront of the mix unleashing the full range of emotions that had previously only been hinted at in her previous work. Its a siren song for the apocalypse, which manages to come across immensely nurturing at the same time. Born and raised in the backwoods of Wisco, Nika Roza was literally raised by wolves (well proximally anyways). Trained as an opera singer from a young age, she applied to Julliard. At 10 years old. Rejection didnt slow her down, though, as she went on to complete high school in three years and is set to graduate from university with a double major in French and philosophy in the same amount of time. As soon as schools out this summer, she will begin touring full time with a full band on both sides of the pond. Until then please keep an eye out for weekend excursions and the requisite standard umpteen SxSW shows. "A lot of people mention the "L" word when talking (or whispering) about Asa Osborne. Its not Lungfish were talking about here (he was their guitar player), but rather "Levine," as in Keith Levine. It seems Mr. Osborne witnessed a fight with Keith Levine as one of the combatants. Levine subsequently lost a tooth and--this is the strange part--Osborne grabbed it and has used the tooth as a guitar pick ever since. Weird.  Zomes self-titled album is full of beautiful Seesselberg-sized chunks of loop-like melodies that effervesce while Osborne brings them to life. Price: $22.00
"Bored of cover bands and Torontos stagnant bar scene, Chris Haight and John Hamilton formed Zoom in 1976, inspired by such pre-punk touchstones as the Velvet Underground, Roxy Music, Bowie and Sparks. The band quickly set to gigging locally, but were soon caught up in the punk scene that exploded to life around them. An obscure but seminal 1977 45 -- arguably Torontos first punk record-- was their sole release before the band dissolved as Haight joined the Viletones and Hamilton began drumming for the Diodes. Despite their duties in two of Canadas leading punk bands, however, the pair didnt want great songs like “Schoolgirl Hitch Hiker,” “My Babys Got No Brains” and “They Only Come Out At Night” to go undocumented, so they entered the studio in 1978 to get this stuff on tape. Produced by Bob Segarini and BB Gabor, and with musical contributions from members of The Ugly, The B-Girls and The Curse, the session captured a pretty special time in Toronto music history. It seems especially poignant that it would then remain unheard for decades. In 2014, Hamilton, who had gone on to an illustrious career of his own but had never entirely forgotten Zoom, located the tapes and had them professionally baked and restored. A trove of photographs, flyers and graphics was similarly uncovered, and now Ugly Pop is very pleased to announce a 13-track LP." - Ugly Pop.

This is how Zoomers account begins: "The last thing I remember about The Zoomers was driving down the levee road on the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, tripping my ass off on LSD in my Dads Lincoln Continental drinking Papst Blue Ribbon beer by the 12 pack and throwing Zoomer 45s at whatever we could hit and that wasnt much, except for that rather large dog that later turned out to be a cow (its amazing how much everything looks the same at 100 mph). But like my Mom always said its the thought that counts, anyway at the end of a 3 day acid bender, thinking was the last thing on my mind." - Hyped 2 Death.

"...Zoomer kept gobbling drugs and writing songs and driving along levees at 100 mph, but before he moved to L.A. and things really blew up, he found his trademark sound. Fans of huge hooks and grubby recording techniques will find fuzzed-out, mosquito-infested nirvana throughout this sampling of Zoom⿿s 1984-1989 output, patiently preserved by his pal and #1 fan Mike while Zoomer was off in search of an even deeper end... (Fans of the Zoomers "Exist" CD will be happy to know theres at least 4 more songs in exactly that same vein --along with the more-evolved/more-hummable tracks)" - Hyped2Death.

Artist: ZORN, JOHN
Title: Naked City
Format: LP
Label: 1972
Country: USA
Price: $26.00
"Regularly hailed as one the most important composers of the late 20th century, John Zorn is comfortable at the helm of an ensemble, as improviser on an array of instruments, and as a bold theorist of collaboration. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the New York artist and operator of the esteemed Tzadik label became known for assembling hardcore-inflected jazz ensembles and for devising game systems, or intricate musical conditions intended to force players into new territory. Released in 1990 on Nonesuch, Naked City bears a stark cover photograph by Weegee -- noted for his unsparing images of New York crime scenes -- and features one of the more staggering rock lineups ever assembled: Zorn on alto saxophone, guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Fred Frith, drummer Joey Baron, keyboardist Wayne Horvitz, and vocalist Yamatsuka Eye. Naked City is a maelstrom of styles, veering recklessly between country, noise, New Orleans R&B, polka, and grindcore, with overtures from detective shows and film noir. In other words, its a daring maelstrom of American musical vernacular. It also explodes the rock formats supposed limitation and retains a wildly intersectional listenership: devotees of punk, free jazz, and harsh noise celebrate Naked City. In short, as one writer put it, Naked City remains a pinnacle of avant coolness." - 1972.

Title: Transparent
Format: Double LP
Label: Cold Spring
Country: UK
Price: $30.00
Comes in a gatefold sleeve with a 12" booklet of unseen images and includes a download card. "The entire Transparent recordings released for the first time, completely remastered from the unedited tapes. Zos Kia was formed by John Gosling (Mekon), John Balance (Coil) and Min - with guest Peter Sleazy Christopherson (Throbbing Gristle). Their one and only album, Transparent, was released on August 23rd, 1983 in a cassette only edition on the now defunct Austria label Nekrophile. They were the first released recordings of both Coil and Zos Kia. It was reissued years later by Coil (Threshold House/Eskaton). Includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks by Ake (pre-Zos Kia). The music on Transparent is genuinely unsettling and disturbing, with a more primal Industrial feel than the Coil album which followed; Scatology (1984). An essential insight into the very early work of these extraordinary artists and an undeniable link between Coil and Throbbing Gristle." - Cold Spring.

"Alexis Zoumbas expressions of longing are so raw and unmediated that I suspect anyone who has ever yearned for anything -- who has ever gazed dolefully out a window, or sighed audibly over a cup of whiskey, or felt subsumed by a certain kind of ache -- will feel these songs like a club to the back of the knees. They are immediate, destructive, and stunning. That Christopher King was able to collect and contain them for us is an extraordinary gift." --Amanda Petrusich; Years of research and obsession have resulted in this, the first collection of recordings by the legendary and masterful Greek folk violinist Alexis Zoumbas. Very few pre-War musicians have tapped deeper into the human soul than Zoumbas and this volume presents his most profoundly hypnotic and unearthly pieces. A deep set of notes is accompanied by previously-unpublished photographs as well as original artwork by R. Crumb. Respectfully crafted by Christopher King and Susan Archie for Angry Mom Records. Deluxe triple-gatefold packaging.” - Angry Mom.

Artist: ZUCCHERI, MARINO
Title: Parete 1967
Format: LP
Label: Die Schachtel
Country: Italy
Price: $31.00
"Marino Zuccheri was the sound engineer of the famous Milan RAI (Italian Broadcasting Company) Electronic Music Studio, and he worked with Berio, Nono, Maderna, Cage, Pousseur among the others, and he gave birth to some of the great masterpieces of early electronica. He was the one who actually knew how to operate the machines (oscillators, tapes etc), and thats why Umberto Eco (the philosopher and world famous novelist - i.e. The Name of the Rose - who worked at RAI and especially with Berio on "Thema-Omaggio a Joyce") wrote: «Who is one of the most performed contemporary electronic composer in the world? Marino Zuccheri, the sound engineer of the RAI Studio of Fonologia in Milan. Illustrious figures in the history of contemporary music arrived there with State grants; but after many months, they still couldnt figure out how to handle the machines. Then Marino (who, working with Berio and Maderna, had become a wizard), started mixing tapes and producing electronic sounds: that is why some of the compositions now being performed all over the world are by Marino Zuccheri.» (Umberto Eco) In 1967 the world-famous painter Emilio Vedova was appointed by the National Government to create an installation for the Italian Pavilion at the Montreal Expo. Vedova came up with this great idea of using small glass slides, especially created to reproduce his abstract painting, and then projected on the asymmetrical walls of the Pavilion. He then asked Nono to compose some electronic music. Nono had no time, and suggested to ask Marino. He replied: "I could do something, but keep in mind that I am no composer". The result is Parete (Wall) 1967, a spectacular and intense 30-minutes loop of pure and intense electronics, a magmatic cascade of harsh sounds and deep drones, and a fantastic counterpart to the vibrant and expressionistic painting of Vedova. As in Marinos word: "I used some previously recorded sounds, the result of an early research: they were really rough material. I created a great loop, which intersected another one, a 30 meters, 30-minutes tape ring. It was so long that it extended out of the Studio room, my colleagues thought I was gone totally nuts. You heard this very loud timbre the music interacted freely with Vedovas visuals, it really was a free encounter between sound and light." This great work has been totally forgotten since today. This record is in fact a world premiere, and the final act of justice towards a man that contributed so much to the birth and development of Electronic Music. PERSONAL NOTE: We have received the tape directly from Marinos hands , taken from his archive. He has been dreaming for years to have it released, and he was totally enthusiastic about our project. Unfortunately he was very old and sick, and he died a few months ago, before we could give him the actual record. It surely is one of our greatest regrets, although we think that justice is done, after all." - Die Schachtel.

"Looking like a perfect replica of a vintage tape reel, this is in fact a 33rpm vinyl LP inserted between two round slices of soft black rubber, and two custom laser-cut aluminum plates. Complete with a 4-page booklet and hosted in a custom-made red cardboard box, this unique object is intended as an homage to the great and recently missed Marino Zuccheri, the sound engineer/tape music genius of the world famous RAI Studio of Fonologia in Milan from the early 60s to the official closure in the early 80s. His sense of humor and natural modesty, together with his immense talent, made him a very special man and musician, and the music of Parete 1967 is a living testimony of this. Title: Dress Code (Dont Look At My Car)
Format: LP
Label: Optimo Music
Country: UK
Price: $18.00
"Peter Zummo presents Dress Code (Dont Look At My Car) on Optimo Music. Peter Zummo (born 1948) is an American composer and musician. He plays the trombone, valve trombone, euphonium, synthesizer, other electronic instruments, and also sings. He is associated with the post-minimalist and Downtown aesthetics, and he describes his music as "minimalism plus a whole lot more." Hes well-known for his work with Arthur Russell." - Optimo Music.
"In this project for Optimo, the listener can hear that my musical food pyramid has musicians at top, or maybe they are at the bottom. In any case, they are important. That is why, from track to track, I selected segments in which one player or another is featured in the take. Some may think that we musicians do multiple takes to get the perfect performance, but I like to find the special interactions lurking in each excursion. Different players came forward in each of the takes, which were recorded in the studios Seaside Lounge and Headroom, in Brooklyn, and live in performances at Cube Cinema, in Bristol, UK, as well as in Long Island City and on Staten Island, New York. In order to escape the tyranny of the lyric, I am exploring in this release the possibilities of nonsensical and non-emotional lyrics. These kinds of lyrics bring the singing voices into the mix without an overweening message. The tracks include open-form compositions in which the duration was not specified." -- Peter Zummo, June 2016.

1995 release. "Experimenting With Household Chemicals explores a trombone-specific method for generating melodic movement, as well as a collection of related, "spinoff" melodic material for ensemble. This method is a new way of seeing and combining slide and lip movements, so that performance can precisely follow well-defined mental diagrams while generating unexpected melodic material not conditioned by other, more common musical habits." - XI.

Title: Zummo With An X
Format: LP
Label: Optimo Music
Country: UK
Price: $22.00
Originally released in 1985 in an edition of 500 copies, this is the first time this album has been available on vinyl for nearly 30 years. Peter Zummo (born 1948) is an American composer and musician. He plays the trombone, valve trombone, euphonium, synthesizer, other electronic instruments, and also sings. He is associated with the post-minimalist and Downtown aesthetics, and he describes his music as "minimalism plus a whole lot more." "I first discovered Peter Zummo when I first discovered Arthur Russell. I kept hearing THAT trombone sound throughout Arthurs music and through scanning through various label credits made the connection that this Peter Zummo character was a constant collaborator with Arthur. Zummos trombone sound is one of those things that if I am feeling anxious or pissed off will instantly soothe me and make everything feel alright. So, as well as wanting to hear everything Arthur had touched, I now also wanted to hear everything Mr. Zummo had created too. Its worth bearing in mind that at this point, in the mid- to late 90s, there was almost zero information online about Arthur or his music or his collaborators. The upside of this was that all his records werent too hard to track down and werent going for crazy money. I randomly found Zummo With An X in New York around 1999 and wasnt sure what to expect. I instantly liked the first side, Lateral Pass but side 2s Song IV took my breath away and remains to this day one of my most listened-to records. Despite the minimal elements, I hear more in it every time I listen to it, and sometimes the perfect interaction between cello, trombone and percussion sounds like the voice of Arthur being beamed in from the aether. It is 20 minutes of sheer bliss that feels as if it could go on for twice as long. Unavailable on vinyl since 1985, its a great honor to be making this record available again and I cant imagine anyone with even a passing interest in Peter Zummo or Arthur Russells music failing to be beguiled by this." -Twitch.

Title: Zurich
Format: LP
Label: Important
Country: USA
Price: $22.00
"Limited edition of 500 copies pressed at RTI and packaged in heavy duty jackets screen printed at Monoroid. Featuring members Tony Wilson (Knives ov Resistance), Neil Halstead (Slowdive/Mojave 3), & Sarah Peacock (Seefeel). Zurich began as a 1994 musical partnership between Neil Halstead then of Slowdive and Tony F. Wilson. The two recorded a handful of tracks together at a time when Wilson was co-promoting and DJing at the club/live night Quirky in South London where he booked acts including Pan Sonic, Hafler Trio and Autechre. Halstead was shortly to begin work on Slowdives final and most experimental album, Pygmalion. Recorded at a time when the popularity of ambient techno was at its peak, these recordings are remarkably austere by comparison. Whilst A Harsh Truth displays the Oriental gracefulness of a Sakamoto/Sylvian collaboration, Tzarists gothic industrialism shares more in common with the early works of Coil. Following the release of Pygmalion and Creation letting go of Slowdive, Halstead would disband Slowdive and abandon sound experimentation to create more song-based material in Mojave 3. Shortly thereafter, Wilson began collaborating with drum & bass producer and engineer Joe Gray on more rhythm based, yet still atmospheric productions. Too Scared to Breath features the voice of Seefeels Sarah Peacock and sounds not unlike prime Autechre and Aphex. Militia (Dynamic Warfare) on the other hand mirrors the post-metal dub of Techno Animal and Scorn. All of the recordings were lost until very recently when Touch recording artist Mark Van Hoen found the two tracks on old CD-Rs and cassettes he was given by Wilson. Wilson produced and recorded in the Knives ov Resistance project for the Aurora Borealis label and is currently working on a project with Ted Parson (Swans/Prong)." -Important

“Italian flute player Manuel Zurria presents his third release for Die Schactels Zeit Composer Series, continuing his run of some of the most heartbreaking music ever published by the label. A moving and incredibly clever transcription for flutes, glass, and electronics of John Dowlands 1604 masterwork Lachrimae functions as the thread between a stunning and totally rewarding series of pieces by György Kurtag, Peter Eötvos,Gavin Bryars, Mary Jane Leach, and Howard Skempton, closing on aJuste Janulyte composition written for this album. Title: Tapes 1
Format: LP
Label: Trunk
Country: UK
Price: $27.00
"Tapes 1 represents the first ever sound recordings to be released from the archive of cult Dutch film director Frans Zwartjes. The sound is unlike anything you may have heard -- dream-like, disjointed, disturbing, peculiar, sexy, unexpected, and totally unique. Frans Zwartjes is famous for his art-house films. A Dutch underground auteur, his prolific output dates from 1968. A unique talent, Zwartjes produced, directed, and edited his own films (his last work was in 1991), but more importantly he created and improvised the soundtracks too. Zwartjes is still alive today and his large body of work is only now being recognized by a wider, more international crowd, with screenings at the NFT and other important art-house cinemas across the world. The recordings on Tapes 1 were mixed directly from the Zwartjes soundtrack tape archive. They were assembled directly and in real time by Zwartjes archivist Stanley Schtinter and were originally issued in 2014 on cassette, in an edition of 50. Dont bother trying to find one of them. The music, sound, and speech have been put together as two long, seamless sequences; they are dreamlike, unsettling, peculiar, plugged-in, prescient, and unlike any other soundtrack. All cues mastered and sequenced by Jon Brooks, AKA The Advisory Circle. Includes download; Edition of 500." - Trunk.

Title: Trip Flip Out Meditation
Format: Triple CD
Label: Captain Trip
Country: Japan
Price: $82.00
"First ever CD reissue of one of the most extreme Krautrock-era albums ever made. Originally released by Philips Germany in 1970, the triple LP edition came in an elaborate mirror sleeve and has been near-impossible to find for 35+ years; there have been a handful of suggested reissues over the years, but finally Captain Trip has brought it to fruition, in collaboration with founding member Suzanne Doucet. Incredible fold out packaging emulates the original, with front embossing and silver-foil printing on the quadruple fold-out jacket. Zweistein were a trio of Jacques Dorian, Suzanne Doucet and Diane Doucet. This perfectly done reissue (including 2 bonus tracks from their single at the end of disc 3) is heavily anticipated." - FE. "Musically, Trip, Flip Out, Meditation is largely a sound collage containing massive amounts of studio effects wizardry. Listeners are bombarded with an hour and forty-six minutes (106 minutes) worth of effects-laden voices, natural sounds, electronic effects, organ, guitar, drums and other instruments. The side-long compositions are virtually strewn together avant-garde improvisations in which anything goes. It is this fact which acts as a catch 22 and splits the Krautrock fan base into two factions. First there are those who hail the album as a masterpiece due to its avant-garde nature, wild approach, and inherent reference to a drug trip. Then there are those who pass the album off as a complete timewaster due to its evident amateur musicianship, lack of direction and avant-garde nature." - Doug Brotherton. Highly recommended!

Title: Heute
Format: LP
Label: Dark Entries
Country: USA
Price: $14.00
"Zwischenfall formed in 1982 with Michael Sass (synths), Martin Urban (bass/vocals) and Stephan Kraemer (guitar/drums)??all of German descent. They were united by musical sensibilities that combined electronic and traditional instruments developing the basis for their 1982 demo recordings. By chance Patrick Codenys of the Belgian electro pioneers FRONT 242 heard two songs and decided to record a 4-song EP for the electro bands newly formed label MASK. The Heute EP was released in 1983 after a week of recording in Fronts private studio under the direction of sound-whiz Daniel B. Bearing in mind MIDI had not been invented at the time, the recording involved some extensive sound sculpting including the use of individual synths (PPG Wave, Syrinx, Roland System 100, etc.) for separate drum sounds. To create an organic feel to the combination of acoustic and electric guitar, a trumpet and a bass were incorporated into the electronic arrangements.  Sonically way ahead of their time, Zwischenfall have a distinct sound with hard rhythms and melancholic melodies that blend minimal yet catchy electronics to create a very danceable production. Remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios, the EP features two bonus tracks from the Heute sessions never before released on vinyl: the uptempo ??Tausend Jahre? and ??Katastrophe? the demo version of Flucht. The Dark Entries release of Heute  will include an original press kit with lyrics and band photos and is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies." - Dark Entries.

"A three man, three synthesizer "Industrial-Electro" pop group from Grand Rapids, Michigan comprising T. Purdy, B. Younker and S. Zuidema (all 1960-). Active 1979-1982.
