Artist: Z GUN Title: Issue 2 Format: Mag Label: Z Gun Country: USA Price: $5.00 |
| "Making good on the threat of the debut issue comes the long-awaited return of Z Gun magazine. Issue No. 2 features the inscrutable Sightings from NY-fucking-C, who reveal something close to "all" in their interview with Scott Soriano; an equally fret-worthy encounter with OZs sonic confounders the Fabulous Diamonds; the return of Monty Buckles who strides manfully down the back-alley-Memory Lane of the legendary Mike Doskocil of 80s heavyweights Drunks With Guns; an interview with the UKs long-running Ceramic Hobs (the best experimental band youve mayhap never heard of?); a fulsome chatski with the heavy-duty minimal-synth champeens over at Enfant Terrible; one Rich Kroneiss of Terminal Boredom fame taking on the Harvey Dent-level legacy of the Amphetamine Reptile label; a huge passel of agonized-over record reviews that will serve to either empty out your wallet or keep it nice n fat, and an engaging assortment of garrulous graphics and shorter articles that will hopefully please the eye and quicken the pulse. 56 pages." -Z Gun |

Artist: Z-FACTOR Title: Dance Party Album Format: LP Label: Cititrax Country: USA Price: $21.00 |
| "The first release on NYC based label, Cititrax, is a re-issue of Z-Factors Dance Party Album (originally released in 1984, 500 copies). Fronted by Jesse Saunders and Vince Lawrence, Z-Factor formed in Chicago in 1982, at the very beginning of the house era. Comes with a retro style ?12″ poster & pressed on 160 gram vinyl. ESSENTIAL! Hugely influenced by the Hot Mix 5 radio shows on WBMX, Z-Factor incorporated European synth-driven sounds that theyd heard on the radio with 808 rhythm tracks. This disco: the rhythms, the basslines, the spirit, made by amateurs was to become "house". Farley Jackmaster Funk recalls the early Chicago scene: "We started experimenting, playing with drum machines. Jesse Saunders was on board with me at the Playground at the time, and he was a musician. In the early days, the kick drum and the electric tom-toms of the 808 was enough to make people dance without even putting any music to it. So a lot of the stuff was just beat tracks in the beginning. Then we came to steal everybodys basslines. See, all we ever did was regurgitate disco again by just stealing everybodys music. Because all the original house stuff that came out was somebody elses bassline." But when drum and bass patterns once played by skilled musicians were copied on cheap synths that sounded like the real instruments, they didnt seem old or stolen. Stripped of their songs, these recycled riffs sounded alien and new, like raw, minimal messages transmitted from another world. It was only a matter of time before tracks started to appear on vinyl, and since Lawrences father owned Mitchbal Records, the group had their opportunity to release what is now known as the first full length house album. Nowadays, original copies of the Dance Party Album are very rare, and therefore expensive. And so we present to you the reissue of this important record." -Cititrax. Sidelabel of Minimal Wave. |

Artist: ZACHARIAS, TOM Title: Belinda Format: Double LP Label: Subliminal Sounds Country: Sweden Price: $46.00 |
| "Deluxe limited edition of 500 copies 2LP in a gatefold sleeve. This is the ultimate Swedish early 70s underground psych-funk erotica groove record! Yes, youve heard about the Swedish sin but heres the ultimate proof. Not only were the hippies practicing free love but they recorded some dirty music, too. In the early 70s, legendary outsider artist genius/madman Tom Zacharias, together with the cream of Swedish studio musicians, some beautiful Swedish hippie nymphs and a bunch of drugged-out freaks, recorded two ultra-rare LPs called Belinda and The Daughters Of Belinda, both of which are now mega-rare collectors items that never turn up, even in Sweden. These two masterpieces, with their XXX-rated lyrics, were recorded with both Swedish and English lyrics but only the Swedish language versions were ever released. Even though ads were released in both Screw magazine and Mayfair, the English language versions were kept in the can. Here are both versions plus some real sleazy bonus tracks that were not on the CD edition plus extended liner notes re-telling the previously-untold story of how this recording came to be. Great, groovy, funky acid erotica with loads of gurgling fuzz/wah-wah guitars, booming bass, wicked drum beats and over-the-top XXX erotic lyrics." -Subliminal Sounds. |

Artist: ZAFFIRI, ENORE Title: Riverberazioni Sonore N. 31 Format: 7"/Mag Label: Rossbin Country: Italy Price: $32.00 |
| "heres a nice mouth-watering item: a seven inch record by enore zaffiri (whom we all know from his fantastico lp on die schachtel) including two contemporary (1998) pieces and one from 1973 (which wouldnt be out of place on the la voce ed il sintetizzatore" disc"...) this comes with a very nice-looking art-magazine named "miele", which (amongst other things: articles on alan turing, ones titled "music math", "post-pythagorean ninja", etc...) includes an interview with zaffiri (in italian: the whole magazine is in italian) apparently the 7" is limited to 125 copies (the run of the magazine is obviously higher given the look/feel of the thing)." - Rossbin. 2005 release. |

Compiled from his vast discography, heres a selection with some of his best tracks, an astounding set showing his unique, distinct psychedelic sound. Artist: ZAIMPH Title: Death Blooming Pleasure Format: LP Label: No Fun Country: USA Price: $15.00 |
| "Whoever shall listen to this and shall take notice of these personal occurrences will discern it concerned none but for my self. so reads the back of the new lp by zaimph. when spinning this dark velvet cloak a door opens to clouds of smoke shooting out the windows sills of the shell of old library like ink plumes while smokes leaps like black cats between the curtains. stone and concrete crumble and fill the air with gray gas showering the the maze of shrubs in the courtyard with a dark veil of soot. Marcia Bassett has tread the waters of noise pysch drone and continues to defy the categories. a dark psychadelic guitar wash peaks its head out of the smoldering coals that could have been released on the mighty slaughter productions death industrial temple from Italy. further morbidity croaks from the slicing vocals of a distraught entity being ripped from one dimension to the other... and rather enjoying her ordeal. light the candles and burn the incense.... Limited to 300 copies." - No Fun |

Artist: ZAIMPH Title: Imagine Yourself Here... Format: LP Label: Yew Country: USA Price: $18.00 |
| "Imagine Yourself Here....is the inaugural release on Marcia Bassetts new label YEW. The cover is a parody advertisement taken from an ad for luxury condos in the heart of Williamsburg Brooklyn. The promise of authenticity and Bohemia turned into pricey real estate. Bassetts dense hypnotic soundscapes recontextualize this superficial advertising to create an otherwordly existence. Side a opens out from metronomic foreboding into the whispering night-processes, before breaking apart under mesmeric vocal laments and fractured rhythms of dark space. Side bs woven textures blend with languorous insistent variations exploring the inside-outside dialectic of perception. Edition of 300 in full color sleeves with insert." - Yew. |

Artist: ZAIMPH Title: La Nuit Electrique Format: CD Label: Utech Country: USA Price: $16.50 |
| "Marcia Bassett (Double Leopards, Hototogisu) rears Zaimphs vile head once again on La Nuit Electrique. A raspy, delicate instrumental passage begins like a crippled music box. Elegant and soporose. Blackened guitar and amplification apprise the rest. Acrid feedback hangs in the air and vocal modulations clot inside dark rivers of current. The night electric." -Utech. |

Artist: ZAIMPH Title: Live Hasselt Format: CDR Label: Heavy Blossom Country: UK Price: $12.00 |
| Recorded 5.06.06 "A frozen howl of anguish blacks out tevelvision skies and turns water to blood. This is not fashion or distraction. A tumultuous upsurge of lashing spectral form, a doom fug of revenge - a swirl, a swathe - a blistering exhalation, rising bloody. This is not a utopian attempt to build transparent cathedrals and unite mankind. This is war - pure and bloody - implacable - real." -Heavy Blossom. |

Artist: ZAIMPH Title: Mirage Of The Other Format: LP Label: Gipsy Sphinx Country: Belgium Price: $20.00 |
| "(Gipsy Sphinxs) third release is a full LP (+/-40min) from Marcia Bassetts solo project Zaïmph. Marcia is well known for her leading role in freefolk/improv groups such as Double Leopards and GHQ, as well as for her groundbreaking work with free guitar/flesh metal duo Hototogisu. With her solo project Zaïmph she starts off from the base these groups laid out and takes things to another level, shredding boundaries between dark noise, drone and psych music. Its deeply meditative yet darkly disturbing and emotionally touching music. The LP, Zaïmphs vinyl debut, is pressed in a one-time edition of 525 copies on 180g vinyl with paste-on artwork on thick black jackets, full color 2-sided art paper insert, resealable plastic sleeve; etc.." - Gipsy Sphinx. |
|
Artist: ZAIMPH Title: Serpents Bite Format: CD Label: Heavy Blossom Country: USA Price: $11.00 |
| "Zaïmphs first CD release on her own label Heavy Blossom. Serpents Bite is made up of 8 separate pieces of vapory splendor, pierced metallic sounds, flickering radiance, and exquisite anguish. Culled from the Zaimph archives and recorded between 2005 - 2006; two previously released CDR tracks, now re-edited, rest aside six unreleased tracks. Multiple amplifiers channel dense, 3-dimensional sound played live with no overdubs. This is organic darkness. Grave-vaults of guitar tunnel through distorted clouds of smoke rising from the watery abyss. Vocals of dissolving thoughts recite mysterious incantations. De-tuned piano recordings and infectious drum machine beats dissolve through phantom empires of multiple effects. Complete derangement of the senses. The entirety was mastered by Christelle Gualdi at Loosduinseweg No. 9. Recorded primarily in England, with the exception of tracks 4 & 7, these recordings are as much of a reflecting back as a pulling towards -- Agrippas Mirror to an unseen Universe. The fox hunted and revered wears a golden breast of jewels reciting from Wordsworth via de Quincey: Fabric it seemd of diamond, and of gold, with alabaster domes, and silver spires.... Settle into the tranquility of repose. Sound is fractured oscillations." -Heavy Blossom |

Artist: ZAIMPH Title: Sexual Infinity Format: CD Label: Hospital Productions Country: USA Price: $11.00 |
| "marcia bassett of double leopards, hototogisu, ghq, fame on her first proper solo full length has given us one of our favorites in the history of hospital productions. sexual infinty stands refreshingly organized into six escalating pieces of her signature guitar, voice, and electronic moodscapes entrancing the listener with sinister seduction. comparisons to early 80s power electronics and industrial acts as uncommunity, mauthausen orchestra and ramleh reside in the underbelly of zaïmphs ability to generate ominous, gritty, and doom laden atmosphere cloaked in a thick lush drone. what begins with raw ethereal guitar shadows of longing delight closes with vital gripping electronic tension." - Hospital Productions. |
|
Artist: ZAIMPH Title: The Undetermined Dyad Format: LP Label: Volcanic Tongue Country: UK Price: $26.00 |
| "Edition of 300 copies, with sleeves featuring original artwork by Marcia Bassett, all silkscreened by Alan Sherry of SIWA and with a full-color insert. Expertly mastered by Tom Carter of Charalambides. Zaïmph is working cover for the solo experiments of Marcia Bassett, formerly of Un and Double Leopards, currently of GHQ and Hototogisu. The Undetermined Dyad functions as the fulcrum of her career to date, looking back towards her experiments in group levitation with Double Leopards while extrapolating on her recent solo work. Most of all its a guitar record and one that sits comfortably alongside previous six-string monoliths like John Faheys Days Have Gone By, Donald Millers A Little Treatise On Morals and Masayuki Takayanagis Live At Zojoji Hall while sounding quite unlike any of them. Bassetts re-imagining of the instrument pushes it to the point of almost translucence, where the physical fact of the guitar itself is almost completely subsumed by echo, F/X, loops and the kind of improvisatory logic that prizes infinite expansion and organic growth over repeated tropes or riffs. Aspects of the first side -- the eerie ghost voices, the deep space echo -- recall the electrified ritual of nomadic Japanese avant gardists Taj Mahal Travellers but more immediately it sounds like a magnification of her individual contribution to Double Leopards, generating towers of electricity that move from malevolent arcs of anti-gravity and spumes of throttled single notes through to deep wormholes that do violence to feeble notions of time and space. The B-side is a little more aggressive, with the tactile sound of strings on pick-ups anchoring a gorgeous wash of all-consuming drone and garage band fuzz before Bassett cranks the tone into realms of total sonic reducer. If your concept of the guitar begins with Jimi Hendrix setting the fucking thing on fire and ends with the sound of voltage completely liberated from any kind of tonal or harmonic anchor whatsoever, then this record may well be the girl youve been praying for. But you wont wanna introduce her to your parents." --David Keenan, Glasgow, April 2008. |

Artist: ZAIMPH Title: Untitled Format: 7" Label: Arbor Country: USA Price: $5.50 |
| "In the past Marcia Bassett(of Double Leopards, GHQ) has proved her versaitility under the Zaimph name; from the depraved feedback and tone fury of her "Sexual Infinity" CD on Hospital Productions to her delicate electric guitar and vocals waves on the "Mirage of The Other" LP on Gypsy Sphinx. This untitled 7" release further proves this fact by recalling her earliest roots in the Siltbreeze band UN: vocal mantras and delicate strumming are placed over a hypnotically evolving base of looped piano, feedback, and strings. The end result is something beautiful that twists the lines of classification, picking up little points of reference from her past bands and laying out a path towards the future. In an edition of 500 7"s in proprinted full color foldover sleeves with art by Marcia. Mastered by Josh Stevenson." - Arbor |

| "Too many recordings piling up, so we said: boxset. Artist: ZANDOSIS Title: Chasing Ghosts Format: Cass Label: Old Gold Country: USA Price: $4.50 |
| "Sounds like Zandosis first PSF release, just in time for 1974. Les Rallizes Denudes plus Kaoru Abe and a weather damaged reel of ?-inch tape. Merzbow, Nihilist Spasm Band, Blowhole and Gorgoroth are not so much analogues as they are (lost) reference points. The ancient easterners used to believe that when they ate animals, they took on their spirit, their properties. Here, Zandosis does that very thing by ingurgitating the zeitgeist of Cages "1st Construction in Metal," Merzbows "Rainbow Electronics," and the writings of Emile Cioran. Like Cioran---and Suzuki, even---Zandosis are adept at unclothing despair and laying bare its humor. If chasing ghosts is supposed to take you somewhere, then its to a Cambodian whorehouse where the porch folk sit all day and watch townies get mauled by rabid dogs. Think on this; add some teriyaki, sake and warm Budweiser and youll know where theyre comin from. Highly recommended." - Copper Green, 2004. |

Artist: ZANDOSIS Title: Z vs. W Format: 7" Label: Old Gold Country: USA Price: $5.00 |
| "In January of 2000, we got together with no pre-conceived notion of what wed sound like. T-Def (Charlie Parker, Free Bass, "Destroy All Music" on WREK FM) was known to be loud, frantic, noisy and deliberately so. Stewart (formerly of William Carlos Williams, Lustmordem, At War with Satan, and PissChrist) played drums with a tiny Han Bennink on one shoulder and a tiny Dave Lombardo on the other. I had an alto saxophone, a microphone and a borrowed amp. Together, the sky would be the limit or the sky would fall. Fast forward to March of 2003. That motherfucker George W. Bush is sending the country (and its young men and women) to fight a pre-emptive war for no real good reason. Wed been playing very free, early-FMP/Haters style music, and focused our sonic output on those pushing this invasion. The result was about 15 short bursts of energy directed at 15 members of the Project for the New American Century. It felt good. Damn good, in fact. And it sounded good. The next time we played live, we played this new hardcore set. The lazy art crowd in the house enjoyed it. We dug it, too, sent it to the Czech Republic, pressed it onto 220 heavy vinyl records, wrapped them in print shop cleaner paper, and are unleashing it on the world. Chris may list the song titles. He may not. Either way: "Colin Powell Uncle Tom" was omitted by the pressing plant, so if you want to hear that song, gather two of your friends, count to four real fast and start screaming liar and/or fucker or any combination of the two while your friends unleash a torrent of rage. When youre done, say sell out." - Marshall Avett; Old Gold. |

Spanning five years and two CDs, this initial release from the fictional collective of Zashiki-Warashi is sewn together with appearances by members of NNCK, Izititiz, Enos Slaughter, Floriculture and TEST. The music shrieks, drones, floats, superimposes unlikely realities and outlines a subconscious narrative inspired by travels ranging from a South Carolina swamp to a Moroccan graveyard. A mix of shortwave transmissions, ukuleles, bowed and plucked strings, distant drums and voices, nearby birds and guitars, chanting crowds and not quite discernable sounds recorded in places as diverse as a Texas parking lot, Harlems Hinthouse, Roulette Intermedium and a Virginia old folks home. Presented in hand painted sleeves. Limited to a pressing of 502." - Conduit Creations. |

Artist: ZDRASTVOOTIE Title: 2 Format: CD Label: Holy Mountain Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "ZDRASTVOOTIEs 2 is a perplexing album. It folds the far corners of some of the worlds most out-there progressive rock with deep, deliberate singer-songwriter type vocals and lyrics. It is both a collection of confusing, dark and fragmented meditations and defiantly odd music, yet it is far more accessible and playful than one would expect. The recorded debut of DREW ADAMs vocals is imposing and grand-he sings like a crooner. The album is still marked by the groups gifts as songwriters and players, as the songs are disjointed and the arrangements abrasive. The material is achingly beautiful, and lovely melodies appear throughout the release. This new album will sound, to most, like no other music on Earth." - Holy Mountain. |
|
Artist: ZDRASTVOOTIE Title: III Format: LP Label: Holy Mountain Country: US Price: $16.50 |
| "ZDRASTVOOTIE creates ornate musical soundcastles with of guitars, bass, drums, sax and DREW ADAMs inimitable vocals. III is the spectacular new album from Portlands kings of angular progressive songcraft. The high point of the LP is the groups masterful take on the folk standard "Golden Ring Around the Susan Girl" which sounds like it was filtered through Sonny Sharrocks "Black Woman." The LP was pressed in an edition of 350 copies to be sold on the bands first tour of the United States and Canada. Silkscreened covers and a fully illustrated comic book insert complete the package." - Holy Mountain. |

Artist: ZDRASTVOOTIE Title: S/T Format: LP Label: Holy Mountain Country: USA Price: $15.00 |
| "A few years ago Santa Cruz avant-rock group ZDRASTVOOTIE decided to ditch their vocalist and concentrate on the unique interplay they had begun to achieve with two guitars and drums. This new configuration recorded an album of material that was eventually scrapped because their sound had morphed into something different by the time everything was ready to go. Zdrastvootie are currently a very focused entity, with increasingly complex songs a la King Crimson, Hampton Grease Band or Doc at the Radar Station-era Magic Band. While they have recently added a bassist, and guitar-player DREW ADAMS has begun to sing, Zdrastvootie still orbits this zone and will continue to until you are very aware that they practice all the time." - Holy Mountain. |

Artist: ZEBU! Title: Bag of Sand Format: LP Label: Feeding Tube Country: USA Price: $15.00 |
| "Edition of 100. Ted and Steve occupy the noise parts of their Amherst cellar during the spring of 2008. Although there is a piano upstairs, most of the recording occurred with pedals looping in your brain and fuzz for your face. Tape samples and distorted fun make a broken soundscape of trash-rock. Drastically different than their previous releases, ZEBU! defines a new pattern of true noise experimentation that would come to fill their sound. -Feeding Tube "Anyone into crazy ass free rock or the more adventurous scuzzy basement punk spheres should do themselves a favor and check these guys out." -Auxiliary Out |

Artist: ZEBU! Title: Chill Wave Format: LP Label: Feeding Tube Country: USA Price: $19.00 |
| "Feeding Tube Records is proud to present ZEBU!s eighth record. The basic duo consists of Steve DAgostino and Ted Lee, but they are neither averse to allowing guest members to pop in for a few shots, nor are they afraid to allow their releases to follow certain semi-conceptual boundaries. This, this one -- if actually categorizable as anything -- serves as ZEBU!s surf album. With saxophone by Peter Van Siclen, and bass by either Jonathan Granoff or Stephen Surrett, ZEBU! creates an atmosphere not unlike the woozy venues frequented by Eric Von Zipper in William Ashers mid-60s series of beach movies. There are a couple of slow tunes tossed in for Annette, but the large part of this stuff is classicist American instrumental ho-daddyism. The structure of the album is typically whacked -- snippets of Volcano Suns-like indie-rock and semi-abstract power blurts pop up here and there -- but the semiotic heft of the record is shockingly straight-ahead. Its almost as though these guys were trying to figure out how to make teenagers spin their pony skirts the way they once did. Catch a wave and youre sitting on top of the world. Honest." -Feeding Tube. |

Artist: ZEBU! Title: Hagenwerder-C Format: LP Label: Feeding Tube Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Edition of 100. In the tiny town of Hagenwerder in the former GDR on the border with Poland, is an abandoned, destroyed Coal power plant. During their second German tour, ZEBU! got inside this building and recorded 45 minutes of resonant exploration. Ted hits the walls, lifts the dust from the floor and hops his way through Soviet History. 7 seconds of natural delay, and bass demons of unknown frequency define this echo-filled performance." -Feeding Tube |

Artist: ZECHARIA, ZADIK Title: Kurdish Melodies On Zorna Format: CD Label: Bo Weavil Country: UK Price: $16.50 |
| "Zadik Zecharias zorna playing is a powerful relentless blast of beauty. The drone-like qualities that engulf both the listener and player are unyielding in their intensity from start to finish. The instrument, well known in the Middle East, particularly in Kurdistan, Iraq and Turkey, is similar in sound and intensity to the Scottish bagpipes. Zadik takes few pauses for breath, but wildly plays a continuous flow of melody weaving around the Dola drum that provides a pulsating rhythm. Zadik Zecharia was born in the Sharnash Village in Kurdistan and moved to Israel in 1950. Zadik has dedicated his whole life to playing the zorna -- a traditional, trumpet-like instrument (but longer and narrower), that has been identified with the Kurdish people. There are two kinds of melodies: Chopie and Shechni. The Chopie are the fast melodies, tunes for dancing with the high notes of the Zorna. The Dola drum always accompanies the Zorna on Chopie tunes. The Shechni are slower melodies in the background, sad tunes that are usually played while the celebrators are sitting around the table. It reminds them of their Motherland, Kurdistan, and serves as an intro to the partying and dancing. (Tzadik Zecharia, Jerusalem 2005) First released on cassette in the 1980s, Bo Weavil reissue this with a beautiful digi-pack designed sleeve. Limited to 550." - Bo Weavil. |

Artist: ZELIENOPLE Title: Stone Academy Format: LP Label: Root Strata Country: USA Price: $15.00 |
| "Cracked song poems from a basement in Chicago with no lights on. Zelienople create acoustic improvisations that have as much in common with Thuja as they do the late period work of Talk Talk. Slowly drifting guitar tones run head first into blown out harmonium drones and the broken edges of homemade instruments. These songs arent drifting as much as they are lost at sea. Each cover comes with a real photo by Bay Area photographer Dianne Jones. Six different ones in all. Hand numbered as well." - Root Strata. Edition of 300. |
|
Artist: ZELIENOPLE Title: Stone Academy Format: CD Label: Digitalis Country: USA Price: $11.00 |
| "Hailing from Chicago, Zelienople have been etching out a place for themselves in the Windy City for the past five years. Constant collaborators with Souled Americans Scott Tuma, this quartet mixes ghostly song structures with ambient drones better than just about anyone. With recent releases on Time-Lag, New Zealands Pseudoarcana, and Tarentels Root Strata imprint, the boys of Zelienople are rising like vines toward the canopy. Stone Academy picks up where 2005s brilliant Ink (recently reissued on CD by Loose Thread Recordings) left off. It balances the simple beauty of guitar-based songs with overwhelming, dark drones. The combination is as powerful as it is intricate. Each note, each chord is carefully chosen and perfectly placed; they never take too long or push too much. The attention to detail is magnificent. Zelienople have mastered the art of making expansive, luminescent drones sound as organic as the soil beneath your feet. Stone Academy reverberates like its planted deep inside a lost cavern, hidden miles beneath the surface waiting for excavation. With rich textures and challenging soundscapes, Stone Academy is a wholly satisfying listening experience. The darkness is only a canvas for the light of these compositions to shine through. Zelienople offer up one of the years finest aural adventures." - Digitalis. |

Artist: ZELIENOPLE Title: The World Is A House On Fire Format: LP Label: Type Country: UK Price: $21.00 |
| "Veterans of the sprawling Chicago music scene, Zelienople have carved out a unique sound over their album releases. The World is a House on Fire is the latest chapter in the bands story, and frames their music more succinctly than ever before. Mike Weis (percussion), Matt Christensen (vocals, guitar) and Brian Harding (bass, saxophone) managed to perfect brooding, melancholy doom-pop on their last full-length Give it Up (TYPE 054CD), and this latest LP finds the band in a more evocative mood. The trio have utilized dream-pop tropes before, but in the first bars of opener "The Southern," there is no doubt that the haunted Americana of the bands previous recordings has been swathed in a haze of drifting synthesizer tones and echoing organ drones (played by occasional member Donn Ha). The simplistic beauty of Slowdive and early Verve is distilled to a vapor as it drifts into Christensens characteristic vocals and Weis soft, subtle percussion. This isnt pop music, but the skeletons of pop are just about audible, enshrined in something far more beautiful and much more delicate. The World is a House on Fire is a blissful and utterly enveloping addition to the Zelienople canon, and while it might be more subtle than their previous records, it stays with you longer than you might expect. "Haunting" doesnt even begin to describe it. Limited vinyl pressing of 700 copies, cut at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin." -Type. |

Artist: ZERFAS Title: S/T Format: LP Label: Phoenix Country: UK Price: $23.00 |
| "The sole 1973 album on 700 West by the Indianapolis outfit featuring the Zerfas brothers David and Herman, is one of the best and probably best-known self-pressed U.S. psych records ever to have seen the light of day. All the material is self-penned, which comes as a surprise, as the tracks are all uniformly strong, with lots of keyboards, ring modulators, heavy reverb, backwards vocals, random sound effects, and some outstanding harmonies. One pundit was moved to write: "...a stunning psych album [which] can only be described as what might have happened if The Beatles had pushed the psychedelic experiments of Revolver into late-60s/early-70s territory," which gives you some idea of what this albums all about. As a fan wrote after discovering the band for the first time, "...as the prelude to the first track slowly faded up -- a wondrously thick mix of layered backwards and forwards voices and sounds -- I remember thinking that this might just be the best thing Id ever heard. Across the two sides you can get some sense of these musicians laboring for hours in a small studio to get just the right blend of harmony, guitar, drums and organ to reach for that fleeting glimpse of something larger than we are. This is a great LP." And really, theres not much more you can add to that, is there? Pressed on 180 gram vinyl." -Phoenix |

|
Artist: ZEV Title: as/if/when Format: LP Label: Sub Rosa Country: Belgium Price: $16.00 |
| "Sub Rosa presents works by industrial music pioneer, ZEV. The physical vibrations of the objects in his works with both text and sound has been influenced by the Middle Eastern mystical system best known as Kabbalah, as well as -- but not limited to -- African, Afro-Caribbean and Indonesian rhythms, musics and cultures. He has studied Ewe music, Balinese gamelan, and Indian tala. From 1959-1965 he studied drumming with Arnie Frank, then Chuck Flores and then Art Anton at Drum City in Van Nuys, CA. In 1963, he abandoned Judaism and began his life-long relationship with World religions and esoteric systems. 1964 saw the beginning of his initial attempts at writing poetry and explorations of both two and three-dimensional artforms. After studying at CalArts from 1969-1970 with poets Emmett Williams and Michael S. Bell and writer/critic Sue-Ellen Case, he began producing works using the name S. Weisser, primarily concentrating on visual and sound poetries. In 1975, he was included in the "Second Generation" show at the Museum of Conceptual Art in San Francisco. In 1976 he moved from Los Angeles to the Bay Area, ending up with a storefront studio on MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, pretty much midway between the headquarters of the Black Panther Party, (who dissolved that year), and the Hells Angels (still extant). A primary reason for this move was his association with the San Francisco Alternative exhibition space La Mamelle (run by Carl Loeffler and Nancy Evans). In 1977 he presented his first solo percussion performance under the project title "Sound of Wind and Limb." In 1978 he began developing an idiosyncratic performance technique utilizing self-developed instruments formed from industrial materials such as stainless steel, titanium, and PVC plastics. Critic John Buckley described his performances in this era: "the instruments are collections of objects ... strung together with ropes and swung at varying speeds and directions to produce a fairly astonishing range of pitches and timbres. And the moves the guy goes through to manipulate these instruments are, for grace and athleticism, strong stuff. ZEV is also interesting for the close correlation of visual and musical aspects, since the physical vibrations of the objects you see are the same as those picked up by the ears as sound. Also, since the rhythms of the work are dictated by the performers every and any movement, an inevitable integrity unifies the act." Here are two pieces from the artists early sound experiments: "As," recorded in 1978 at the KPFK radio station in Los Angeles, and "If," recorded at Savoy Tivoli in San Francisco. On clear vinyl." -Sub Rosa |

It features the original seven tracks from the vinyl plus six recodings entitled Reproduction and Decay of Spatial Relations made by Zev in May/June 2005. Back in the day, Zev used to bring boxes over from Holland when he would come back to New York City which he would sell to Bleeker Bob (a famous record shop situated in the East Village of NY) who told him: this is the best industrial record ever and I sell it to every Japanese buyer who comes into the store. The CD is housed in a reproduction of the original LP (!) cover and comes with a special handmade insert. First edition of 500 copies. Total playing time: 79:57 min. The first edition of 500 copies also includes a bonus CD with never before released archive material all recorded in 1982." - Die Stadt. |

Artist: ZIP CODE RAPISTS Title: Sing and Play the Three Doctors and Other Sounds of Today Format: CD Label: Eabla Country: USA Price: $16.00 |
| "As SF Weekly journalist Mike Rowell says, "Part comedy act, part psychodrama, the ZIP CODE RAPISTS were a volatile, often antagonistic duo who wreaked havoc on San Franciscos underground during the first half of the 90s. You never knew quite what to expect from guitarist JOHN SINGER and vocalist GREGG TURKINGTON, but they always challenged the conventions of what a band should be." From their supposed beginnings as a Doors cover band from Texas, to their shameful years of bloated excess, to their acrimonious breakup and inevitable decade-later reunion, this CD details the hope and anger, the trauma and triumph, of this quintessentially American folk-punk combo. In addition to the Zip Code Rapists astonishing 1992 debut LP Sing and Play the Three Doctors and Other Sounds of Today, this CD compiles the overlong 7-inch The Man Cant Bust Our Music (1993) and the inexcusably short 12-inch 94124 (1995), all of which have been lovingly remastered for todays more discerning listener. This deluxe package also includes previously unheard outtakes and compilation tracks, four songs from an incendiary 1993 show at CBGB, and a touching tribute to Seals and Crofts from a 2006 reunion show. With the exception of 94124, none of this seminal material has ever been released on CD. And none of it was ever released on good-quality vinyl after competent mastering, either, so even if youre familiar with the original releases, youll be amazed by all the details you missed! Best of all, each CD comes with a FREE RUB-ON ZCR TATTOO, which can be worn for a day, or cherished for a lifetime." - Eabla. |

Artist: ZODIAC MOUNTAIN Title: Live In America, Summer 2006 Format: CDR Label: 23 Productions Country: USA Price: $10.00 |
| "Early in the Summer of 06, Clay Rubys Zodiac Mountain did a short U.S. tour, showering the people with roots rock, heavenly boogie, atmospheric spirituals, cryptic blues and the occasional classic cover tune. This incarnation of Zodiac Mountain was a collaboration between Clay Ruby and Wooden Wand, featuring jams with Nate Nelson (Mouthus, Religious Knives), Robert Beatty (Eyes and Arms of Smoke, Hair Police), and Maya Miller (Religious Knives, Double Leopards). 5 songs, over an hour of red, white and blue BLISS from two of the heaviest, gun toting, bourbon soaked, BBQ breathd road warriors east of the Mississippi. This material is a far departure from the intense heathen rituals and bleak folk songs of Zodiac Mountains "Lake Winnebago" demos, and nothing like the newest Zodiac Mountain recording project in progress, which is wrapping itself up like some kinda amphibious Crash Worship services. Also, it should be noted that this is not the same band as the ZODIACS (the heavy rock band with forthcoming CD on Holy Mountain), although it is rumored that both bands feature many of the same members." - 23 Productions. |

Gone is full of l-o-n-g jams that bring to mind such wild ones as German Oak, Magic Muscle and foggy dreams of The Stooges moonlighting as a Hawkwind tribute band during the off season. Artist: ZOLA JESUS Title: In Your Nature Format: 7" Label: Sacred Bones Country: USA Price: $6.00 |
| "It is our honor to present the first and only official authorized Zola Jesus remix, In Your Nature, as heard through the ears of David Lynch. We gave Mr. Lynch a copy of her album Conatus and let him pick which track he wanted to work with. He chose a track that we felt already had single potential and replaced the tension building string patches with intricately crafted guitar parts orchestrated and performed by himself and music assistant Dean Hurley. What was once a dance track becomes a lurching cinematic masterpiece. The beat is slowed to a crawl, drum and synth patches removed entirely, and what is left is something perhaps closer to the nature of Zola Jesus than we ever could have hoped for." -Sacred Bones |

Artist: ZOLA JESUS Title: Stridulum Format: 12 Label: Sacred Bones Country: USA Price: $12.00 |
| "Since her debut lp for Sacred Bones last summer, Zola Jesuss profile has grown exponentially. Her video for ??Clay Bodies? debuted on The Fader and her likeness was plastered all over the Internet. The Spoils made dozens of year-end lists including The Wire, Pitchfork, The Fader, and Dusted, and fans and critics alike now seem rabid for new material. So without further ado, we present Stridulum, the new, far less lo-fi 6-song EP from Nika Roza Danilova. Recording her vocals for the first time with professional instruments, Nikas voice is brought to the powerful forefront of the mix unleashing the full range of emotions that had previously only been hinted at in her previous work. Its a siren song for the apocalypse, which manages to come across immensely nurturing at the same time. Born and raised in the backwoods of Wisco, Nika Roza was literally raised by wolves (well proximally anyways). Trained as an opera singer from a young age, she applied to Julliard. At 10 years old. Rejection didnt slow her down, though, as she went on to complete high school in three years and is set to graduate from university with a double major in French and philosophy in the same amount of time. As soon as schools out this summer, she will begin touring full time with a full band on both sides of the pond. Until then please keep an eye out for weekend excursions and the requisite standard umpteen SxSW shows. Her next full length will not be til 2011, but we feel pretty certain this will tide you over until then." - Sacred Bones. |

"Sacred Bones is proud to present The Spoils from Zola Jesus. Hailing from the unsuspecting locale of Madison, WI, Zola Jesus--the alter ego of Nika Roza Danilova--occupies a sphere of sparse industrial rhythms, no-fi drones, and ethereal femme vocals. Those who have seen her handful of live shows, heard her WFMU set, or caught any of the acclaimed, sought after, and now mostly out of print releases on Die Stasi or Troubleman Unlimited already know. For those uninitiated, The Spoils may be the most fully realized representation of her sound. Zola Jesus has two previous releases on Sacred Bones, the ??Souer Sewer? single and a limited CD of a live performance from WNYU." - Sacred Bones.

The spooky vibrato of Madison vocalist NIKA DANILOVA effectively throws the dreamy hooks of Ronnie Spector down an empty well. In live sets, DEAD LUKEs sonically haunting synthesizers crawl over the minimalist rhythm section of bassist LINDSAY MIKKOLA and tom-tom player MAX ELLIOT to provide an adequate backdrop for Danilovas heaving vibrato and sinister shrieking."-Madison Decider. Artist: ZOMES Title: s/t Format: CD Label: Holy Mountain Country: USA Price: $13.00 |
| "A lot of people mention the "L" word when talking (or whispering) about Asa Osborne. Its not Lungfish were talking about here (he was their guitar player), but rather "Levine," as in Keith Levine. It seems Mr. Osborne witnessed a fight with Keith Levine as one of the combatants. Levine subsequently lost a tooth and--this is the strange part--Osborne grabbed it and has used the tooth as a guitar pick ever since. Weird. Zomes self-titled album is full of beautiful Seesselberg-sized chunks of loop-like melodies that effervesce while Osborne brings them to life. There is a cinematic quality to the material here that recalls "library music," East German Indianerfilmen soundtracks, and even Blues Control at their most humid." - Holy Mountain. |

They are an audio holographic Rorschach blot flatlining, or a Freudian analysis gone horribly wrong on E.S.P. fog medicine from the future. Along with their phenomenally-rare 45 (which leads off Homework #103 [formerly #5]), the three of them made up a 12-song cassette as well called "Exist" Heres both (with lots more to come). This is how Zoomers account begins: "The last thing I remember about The Zoomers was driving down the levee road on the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, tripping my ass off on LSD in my Dads Lincoln Continental drinking Papst Blue Ribbon beer by the 12 pack and throwing Zoomer 45s at whatever we could hit and that wasnt much, except for that rather large dog that later turned out to be a cow (its amazing how much everything looks the same at 100 mph). But like my Mom always said its the thought that counts, anyway at the end of a 3 day acid bender, thinking was the last thing on my mind." - Hyped 2 Death. |

Artist: ZUCCHERI, MARINO Title: Parete 1967 Format: LP Label: Die Schachtel Country: Italy Price: $31.00 |
|
"Marino Zuccheri was the sound engineer of the famous Milan RAI (Italian
Broadcasting Company) Electronic Music Studio, and he worked with Berio,
Nono, Maderna, Cage, Pousseur among the others, and he gave birth to some
of the great masterpieces of early electronica. He was the one who actually
knew how to operate the machines (oscillators, tapes etc), and thats why
Umberto Eco (the philosopher and world famous novelist - i.e. The Name of
the Rose - who worked at RAI and especially with Berio on "Thema-Omaggio a
Joyce") wrote: «Who is one of the most performed contemporary electronic composer in the
world? Marino Zuccheri, the sound engineer of the RAI Studio of Fonologia
in Milan. Illustrious figures in the history of contemporary music arrived
there with State grants; but after many months, they still couldnt figure
out how to handle the machines. Then Marino (who, working with Berio and
Maderna, had become a wizard), started mixing tapes and producing
electronic sounds: that is why some of the compositions now being performed
all over the world are by Marino Zuccheri.» (Umberto Eco)
In 1967 the world-famous painter Emilio Vedova was appointed by the
National Government to create an installation for the Italian Pavilion at
the Montreal Expo. Vedova came up with this great idea of using small glass
slides, especially created to reproduce his abstract painting, and then
projected on the asymmetrical walls of the Pavilion. He then asked Nono to
compose some electronic music. Nono had no time, and suggested to ask
Marino. He replied: "I could do something, but keep in mind that I am no
composer". The result is Parete (Wall) 1967, a spectacular and intense
30-minutes loop of pure and intense electronics, a magmatic cascade of
harsh sounds and deep drones, and a fantastic counterpart to the vibrant
and expressionistic painting of Vedova. As in Marinos word:
"I used some previously recorded sounds, the result of an early research:
they were really rough material. I created a great loop, which intersected
another one, a 30 meters, 30-minutes tape ring. It was so long that it
extended out of the Studio room, my colleagues thought I was gone totally
nuts. You heard this very loud timbre the music interacted freely with
Vedovas visuals, it really was a free encounter between sound and light."
This great work has been totally forgotten since today. This record is in
fact a world premiere, and the final act of justice towards a man that
contributed so much to the birth and development of Electronic Music.
PERSONAL NOTE: We have received the tape directly from Marinos hands ,
taken from his archive. He has been dreaming for years to have it released,
and he was totally enthusiastic about our project. Unfortunately he was
very old and sick, and he died a few months ago, before we could give him
the actual record. It surely is one of our greatest regrets, although we
think that justice is done, after all." - Die Schachtel.

Artist: ZUCCHERI, MARINO Title: Parete 1967 Per Emilio Vedova Format: LP Box Set Label: Die Schachtel Country: Italy Price: $110.00 |
|
"Looking like a perfect replica of a vintage tape reel, this is in fact a 33rpm vinyl LP inserted between two round slices of soft black rubber, and two custom laser-cut aluminum plates. Complete with a 4-page booklet and hosted in a custom-made red cardboard box, this unique object is intended as an homage to the great and recently missed Marino Zuccheri, the sound engineer/tape music genius of the world famous RAI Studio of Fonologia in Milan from the early 60s to the official closure in the early 80s. His sense of humor and natural modesty, together with his immense talent, made him a very special man and musician, and the music of Parete 1967 is a living testimony of this. Total hand-numbered copies: 67." - Die Schachtel.

Artist: ZUMMO, PETER Title: Zummo With An X Format: LP Label: Optimo Music Country: UK Price: $22.00 |
| Originally released in 1985 in an edition of 500 copies, this is the first time this album has been available on vinyl for nearly 30 years. Peter Zummo (born 1948) is an American composer and musician. He plays the trombone, valve trombone, euphonium, synthesizer, other electronic instruments, and also sings. He is associated with the post-minimalist and Downtown aesthetics, and he describes his music as "minimalism plus a whole lot more." "I first discovered Peter Zummo when I first discovered Arthur Russell. I kept hearing THAT trombone sound throughout Arthurs music and through scanning through various label credits made the connection that this Peter Zummo character was a constant collaborator with Arthur. Zummos trombone sound is one of those things that if I am feeling anxious or pissed off will instantly soothe me and make everything feel alright. So, as well as wanting to hear everything Arthur had touched, I now also wanted to hear everything Mr. Zummo had created too. Its worth bearing in mind that at this point, in the mid- to late 90s, there was almost zero information online about Arthur or his music or his collaborators. The upside of this was that all his records werent too hard to track down and werent going for crazy money. I randomly found Zummo With An X in New York around 1999 and wasnt sure what to expect. I instantly liked the first side, Lateral Pass but side 2s Song IV took my breath away and remains to this day one of my most listened-to records. Despite the minimal elements, I hear more in it every time I listen to it, and sometimes the perfect interaction between cello, trombone and percussion sounds like the voice of Arthur being beamed in from the aether. It is 20 minutes of sheer bliss that feels as if it could go on for twice as long. Unavailable on vinyl since 1985, its a great honor to be making this record available again and I cant imagine anyone with even a passing interest in Peter Zummo or Arthur Russells music failing to be beguiled by this." -Twitch. |

Artist: ZURICH Title: Zurich Format: LP Label: Important Country: USA Price: $22.00 |
| "Limited edition of 500 copies pressed at RTI and packaged in heavy duty jackets screen printed at Monoroid. Featuring members Tony Wilson (Knives ov Resistance), Neil Halstead (Slowdive/Mojave 3), & Sarah Peacock (Seefeel). Zurich began as a 1994 musical partnership between Neil Halstead then of Slowdive and Tony F. Wilson. The two recorded a handful of tracks together at a time when Wilson was co-promoting and DJing at the club/live night Quirky in South London where he booked acts including Pan Sonic, Hafler Trio and Autechre. Halstead was shortly to begin work on Slowdives final and most experimental album, Pygmalion. Recorded at a time when the popularity of ambient techno was at its peak, these recordings are remarkably austere by comparison. Whilst A Harsh Truth displays the Oriental gracefulness of a Sakamoto/Sylvian collaboration, Tzarists gothic industrialism shares more in common with the early works of Coil. Following the release of Pygmalion and Creation letting go of Slowdive, Halstead would disband Slowdive and abandon sound experimentation to create more song-based material in Mojave 3. Shortly thereafter, Wilson began collaborating with drum & bass producer and engineer Joe Gray on more rhythm based, yet still atmospheric productions. Too Scared to Breath features the voice of Seefeels Sarah Peacock and sounds not unlike prime Autechre and Aphex. Militia (Dynamic Warfare) on the other hand mirrors the post-metal dub of Techno Animal and Scorn. All of the recordings were lost until very recently when Touch recording artist Mark Van Hoen found the two tracks on old CD-Rs and cassettes he was given by Wilson. Wilson produced and recorded in the Knives ov Resistance project for the Aurora Borealis label and is currently working on a project with Ted Parson (Swans/Prong)." -Important |

Artist: ZWEISTEIN Title: Trip Flip Out Meditation Format: Triple CD Label: Captain Trip Country: Japan Price: $82.00 |
| "First ever CD reissue of one of the most extreme Krautrock-era albums ever made. Originally released by Philips Germany in 1970, the triple LP edition came in an elaborate mirror sleeve and has been near-impossible to find for 35+ years; there have been a handful of suggested reissues over the years, but finally Captain Trip has brought it to fruition, in collaboration with founding member Suzanne Doucet. Incredible fold out packaging emulates the original, with front embossing and silver-foil printing on the quadruple fold-out jacket. Zweistein were a trio of Jacques Dorian, Suzanne Doucet and Diane Doucet. This perfectly done reissue (including 2 bonus tracks from their single at the end of disc 3) is heavily anticipated." - FE. "Musically, Trip, Flip Out, Meditation is largely a sound collage containing massive amounts of studio effects wizardry. Listeners are bombarded with an hour and forty-six minutes (106 minutes) worth of effects-laden voices, natural sounds, electronic effects, organ, guitar, drums and other instruments. The side-long compositions are virtually strewn together avant-garde improvisations in which anything goes. It is this fact which acts as a catch 22 and splits the Krautrock fan base into two factions. First there are those who hail the album as a masterpiece due to its avant-garde nature, wild approach, and inherent reference to a drug trip. Then there are those who pass the album off as a complete timewaster due to its evident amateur musicianship, lack of direction and avant-garde nature." - Doug Brotherton. Highly recommended! |

Artist: ZWISCHENFALL Title: Heute Format: LP Label: Dark Entries Country: USA Price: $14.00 |
| "Zwischenfall formed in 1982 with Michael Sass (synths), Martin Urban (bass/vocals) and Stephan Kraemer (guitar/drums)??all of German descent. They were united by musical sensibilities that combined electronic and traditional instruments developing the basis for their 1982 demo recordings. By chance Patrick Codenys of the Belgian electro pioneers FRONT 242 heard two songs and decided to record a 4-song EP for the electro bands newly formed label MASK. The Heute EP was released in 1983 after a week of recording in Fronts private studio under the direction of sound-whiz Daniel B. Bearing in mind MIDI had not been invented at the time, the recording involved some extensive sound sculpting including the use of individual synths (PPG Wave, Syrinx, Roland System 100, etc.) for separate drum sounds. To create an organic feel to the combination of acoustic and electric guitar, a trumpet and a bass were incorporated into the electronic arrangements. Sonically way ahead of their time, Zwischenfall have a distinct sound with hard rhythms and melancholic melodies that blend minimal yet catchy electronics to create a very danceable production. Remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios, the EP features two bonus tracks from the Heute sessions never before released on vinyl: the uptempo ??Tausend Jahre? and ??Katastrophe? the demo version of Flucht. The Dark Entries release of Heute will include an original press kit with lyrics and band photos and is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies." - Dark Entries. |

Artist: ZYKLON Title: The Heartland Format: CD Label: GRiM Country: USA Price: $10.00 |
|
"From 1979-1982 there was only ONE minimal synth / industrial band in Michigan and that band was ZYKLON. Killer washes of heavy electronic noise connected by buzzes of melodic synth. Totally WEIRD SHIT that sounded like nothing else. This CD is a heavy historical document of MICHIGAN NOISE!" - Aaron Dilloway. "A three man, three synthesizer "Industrial-Electro" pop group from Grand Rapids, Michigan comprising T. Purdy, B. Younker and S. Zuidema (all 1960-). Active 1979-1982. Self produced single "Wir Sind" b/w "Gary, IN" and "Part Time" (GRiM Records, 1981) distinguishes Zyklon as first electronica recording artist to champion Industrial noise as music genre." Zyklon. Includes the self released cassette and 7" (they also had a track on a very early SUB POP cassette!) as well as tons of unreleased tracks. Word on the street is that the track "Gary, IN" was supposed to be included on the infamous "I Hate The Pop Group" comp but was cut due to space limitations. Highly recommended!
