| "It was 1979, during the Argentine dictatorship, when Ricardo Iorio and Ricardo Moreno decided to start a heavy rock band called Comunion Humana. Two months later some tracks were arranged and Gerardo Osemberg joined ´em as drummer. Inspired by fast engines and the intensity of their playing, the band took V8 as their moniker. During 1980-1982 they played lots of shows that were filled with dramatic incidents: disturbances, arrests, detentions, and event deaths. For these reasons the image of the band was totally conditioned and people started to hate them. In 1982 they recorded their legendary demo-tape and started to receive more attention from others countries. They played lots of gigs, some totally sold out and others empty because crowds hated their rock image and attitude. In 1983 they recorded their debut album Luchando por el Metal ("Fighting for the Metal") with their classic line-up: Ricardo Iorio on bass, Osvaldo Civile on guitar, Alberto Zarmarbide on vocals, and Gustavo Rowek on drums. Before disbanding in 1987 they recorded more albums and their status grew, making them a reference and inspiration for many metal heads all around the world. V8 were chased, ill-treated, and despised for their social lyrics and also for the incidents that occurred at every show. As we mentioned before, there was a tragedy at one show in Estadio Platense, where fighting with the police resulted in deaths. "Although they only got a couple of spins around the earths axis, Vacuum were the band who wrote the clay tablets from which all great Christchurch groups worth a plug would glean substance to formulate THAT sound. Originating in 1977 & consisting of members Bill Direen, Stephen Cogle, Peter Stapleton, Peter Fryer & Alan Meek, Vacuum perfected an aural symmetry that fused classic Nuggets, Roxy, Elevators & Velvets moves as a template & this unique plonk would become germane for all that sailed after. Deep collectors will recognize these tracks by name from various prior releases, but these particular recordings-culled from 78/79 rehearsal tapes-are being made available here for the 1st time, EVER. Kicks would go on to become an early staple in Direens Builders discography, but the guitar on this version is particularly & wonderfully unhinged. Themes on this album include disappointment and the necessary courage to face mistakes, the road that lies between perception and memory and that vital path that appears once we have cleared out the fallen leaves that were hiding it. Its the recalled memories that will make up our life, as life is just firm present and feeble past. Carmen Santonja and Gloria van Aerssen speak to us, sometimes as the worried mother, other times as the warm lover that whispers secrets in our ear and, finally, as the slightly older friend, wiser and more experienced, who tries to show us lifes twists and turns. They possessed an intellectual and vital knowledge light years away from their contemporaries, an unusual curiosity and talent, and their musical references were as wide as scarce were their prejudices. Often considered two kind and sensitive angels, they were indeed that and much more too: malevolent, sweet, sarcastic, intelligent. From each of their tracks flowed a power and talent that showed us a thousand ideas. Social commentary, folk and fuzz hand-in-hand, treatises of luminous psychedelia born out of a childrens tale, the scent of the southern seas, and more. They carried Spanish copla and traditional songs in their hearts and the old (even then) musical movies of the 40s in their memories -- all of it strung together by a decadent melancholy that provokes an almost unhealthy attraction. What in others were anomalies poured from Vainica Doble as something natural, fluent, truthful. Nothing in them seemed forced: rock, copla, folk, French chanson, nursery rhymes, etc. And standing behind it all is the great Pepe Nieto: arranger, producer, and artisan who was able to reproduce and support their natural, iconoclastic personalities. | "180 gram vinyl reissue of one of Vainica Dobles strongest and most experimental albums. Folk, jazz, pop and traditional Spanish music create a beautifully haunting and captivating LP. "In 1984, the Spanish Movida movement was in full bloom and the people taking part in it professed the same devotion to Vainica Doble that British punk displayed towards teen idols such as Marc Bolan. But it would be hard to find a record from those years more impervious to the Movida than Taquicardia, the authors of which seemingly didnt know about such admiration or didnt care about it. Eternal dilettantes, it wasnt strange that the career of Gloria van Aerssen (born in 1932 in Dos Hermanas, Seville) and Carmen Santonja (San Sebastian, 1934) moved forward, most of the time, due to the encouragement of a fan. But this jump without safety net, as Mario Pacheco described it, only could have happened on a label as pathologically respectful towards its artists as Pachecos Nuevos Medios imprint, and at a vital point such as the one the duo were going through during the middle of the decade. It was his enthusiasm which took them out of their silence to record their sixth album and the end of a cycle, as their later recordings would finally be an epilogue of what culminated here magnificently. Elegant, classic, austere and, nevertheless, sounding at times like genuine avant-garde, Taquicardia is the reflection of a critical stage in the life of its authors. Disillusioned by the poor repercussion of their two previous albums for Guimbarda, the outstanding El Eslabón Perdido (1980) and El Tigre De Guadarrama (1981), Gloria and Carmen had found themselves at the peak of mature age and empty-handed. The duo delivers here their most personal, introspective and bitter work, which surprisingly becomes, as if by magic, a superb collection of calls to chaos, libertarian fables and exultant love songs. Passion becomes idolatry, gallant coplas (Spanish popular songs) are touched by grace, pieces of marital bitterness, all of which culminates in an anthem of incredible beauty such as Sígueme, clean, stripped, overwhelming. Gloria declared being so ashamed of the tracks almost pastoral tone that she refused being credited for it. Of course, its her voice which will make the song remain forever. Stripped of the glitz they had displayed in the preceding years, its harder to find here the source of popular and academic music which could usually be heard in their music. But that clarity allows us, more than ever, to enjoy the boldness of many of their song structures and, of course, their vocal harmonies. The musicians involved in this project have worked with each other in various formations: Kevin Drumm and Axel Dörner started working together in the late 90s as part of a trio with Paul Lovens; as a duo they released an influential album on Erstwhile Records. Mysterious Translucence is not just the name of his shoe. Space Chanteys is really the first honest solo album that Matt Valentine has created. | "If string theory is correct, this is approximately the thirteenth album MATT VALENTINE has released that definitely shouldnt be filed under a group name (TOWER RECORDINGS, BUMMER ROAD, GOLDEN ROAD, etc.). On the other hand, if string theory is correct, this might also be his 11,000th album. The truth, one suspects, is somewhere in between. Since bedding down in southern Vermont at the dawn of the century, MV has been as cussedly prolific as anyone. The gout of LPs, cassettes, CDRs, singles and 10-inches emerging from Maximum Arousal Farm has dwarfed the output of everyone cept maybe Sunburned or Thurston. Regardless, there can never be enough MV LPs in the world, and What I Became is a beaut. Most of it is as solo as Satan, apart from percussionist JEREMY EARL (of WOODS fame), whose presence is sometimes felt more than heard. ERIKA "EE" ELDER and MIKE "MUSKOX" SMITH also pop up on a track, but the general approach here is as naked-and-loaded as the soul of Icepick Slim. As usual, MVs tunes and procedures beggar easy generification. | "Luc Van Acker is all except an obscure musician. Already from his solo records in the early 80s he has been building a name for himself as a multi talented musician and performer. While his early works are rather experimental he later joined forces with other musicians (who have become famous with bands like Front 242 and Ministry) to create a more rock orientated industrial / electronic act called Revolting Cocks. The session on this record is from 1981 and thus a very early piece of music in the discography of Luc Van Acker. For this occasion he performed with live electronics, a violin and various other gadgets and tools. The music must be seen as somewhere in between old style industrial music (thus experimental) and modern classical music. This live performance takes the listener from rhythmic pieces into more soundscape like baths of sound and was done as part of the legendary RadioNome radioshow broadcasted by the VPRO in the early 80s. The session has been tranfered from the original tape and is edited and re-mastered to make it available for a new audience. | 2012 release. "...deals with the Museum Le Secret, which I believe is a portable museum, a scale model of a museum, which can be presented in another gallery space. Van den Dobbelsteen, also a visual artist, exhibited in that small museum, and released this record. Like the museum has a scale of 1:200 and 1:87, the music is made from making a similar scale model, I guess by slowing down sounds in a similar scale. Or maybe just silence slowed down, as both pieces last 4 minutes and 33 seconds. The 1:200 version is barely audible and just seems to have some vague sound happenings, the 1:87 model is a more electronic piece of microscopic events being played around. Music wise that is the more musical side of the two. The Tapeworm stumbled upon the lost psych rock recording, Live at F.W. by The Van Patterson Quartet, late during a sleepless night. A link started a chain of events -- the Wormery would not sleep until the answer had been found! "Who on earth are The Van Patterson Quartet?" we asked ourselves. We sent out feelers via our contacts. We waited. Replies came back -- digital shrugs, all expressing a deep fascination that something sounding so splendid could remain unearthed for so long. Then, "Mr. Big" stepped in. Quite by chance, he was neighbours with one of the band. Such serendipity. He hooked us up. Letters were written, requests made, permissions granted, and a few short weeks later a copy of Live at F.W., mailed with a blurry Polaroid, landed on our desk. | "The French-born Edgar Varese (1883-1965), believed music to be both an art and a science. His pioneering use of electronic instruments like the theremin, along with his theory of organized sound has earned him the impressive title of Father of Electronic Music. Varese spent the early twenties as a starving composer in NYC, writing works like the percussionless Octandre and Integrales, his first piece to use the term spatial music. Upon returning to Paris in 1928, he composed the celebrated Ionisation, the first piece ever written for an entirely percussion ensemble (thirteen percussionists and forty instruments). His 1936 piece, Density 21.5, written for solo flute for the premiere of George Barreres new platinum flute, is one of the great masterpieces for unaccompanied flute. It is also one of the only compositions written by Varese during this decade. His next major work, Deserts, was in fact not written until 1950. It was the first piece ever written for magnetic tape and orchestra and was meant to be the soundtrack to a film which would juxtapose images of actual deserts with images from past wars (the great deserts of civilization)." "Dominick Fernow might be best known for his industrial incantations under the Prurient moniker, but in recent months his attention has shifted towards a different outlet. Fernows interest in electronic music (from the clamorous grind of Muslimgauze to the recently-defunct Sandwell District imprint) has been well-documented, and it comes to a frothy head with his Vatican Shadow project. Revolving around themes gleaned from Iraq war propaganda and yellowing stacks of newspaper clippings, the tracks on Kneel Before Religious Icons are a perfect representation of Fernows modus operandi. Released to coincide with his first tour of Europe, the album incorporates the live mix rehearsals of "Operation Neptune Spear" with tracks made in their aftermath, recorded straight to tape and mastered by Matt Colton at Air Studios. Anyone familiar with Fernows live set-up will recognize the distinct nature of this material -- making use of stems and partial tracks separated into a cassette system which is then re-layered and mixed, effected with electronic processing. | "The Forced Nostalgia label continues to expand and inform with the release of this split release featuring 1980s outfits Vazz and La Bambola Del Dr. Caligari. The A-side features six tracks from Glasgows Vazz, a duo consisting of Anna Howson and Hugh Small. Whisper Not was recorded at the legendary Hellfire Club in Glasgow in 1982 and was eventually released on limited edition cassette, before the band were signed up to appear on the 2LP compilation Antelopes & Alligators on Operation Twilight -- a sub-label of Belgiums infamous Les Disques Du Crépuscules. For one reason or another, the compilation never materialized -- but the reference to Crépuscules should give you some idea of where Vazz figure in the scheme of things. Whisper Not really is an astonishing collection of tracks -- a small but perfectly-formed companion-piece of sorts to Antenas Camino Del Sol (which appeared in the same year), with Anna Howsons distinctive voice accompanying guitars, bass, drum machine, percussion and the Casio MT-30 keyboard -- a classic configuration. But what set Vazz apart from their contemporaries is Hugh Smalls forward-thinking production signatures -- something thats most evident on "Cast Reflections" -- the standout track on this mesmerizing set. The way the drum machine and guitar have been treated and compressed sounds like something from The Cures Faith album reworked in a current electronic studio -- its just a profoundly beautiful and affecting piece. It really is hard to believe that these tracks have languished in the archives until now. The B-side features Italys La Bambola Del Dr. Caligari and five tracks recorded between 1983 and 1986. The band were a short-lived minimal synth trio from Bologna, Italy, consisting of the exotically named Judy Asquith (voice), Aurelium Spitty (sound engineer, synth, drum machines, effects) and J.R. Ewing (keyboards, effects). They recorded their first demo tape in early 1984 and sporadically played live in 1985/1986, eventually arranging the soundtrack for an installation at the art gallery Number Zero (Bologna) in Feb. 1986. Several self-produced tapes were recorded over the years but were never properly released. In 2005, Roberto Napoli mastered all the recordings from the analog tapes and kindly assisted in editing the selections made by Forced Nostalgia. "After the release of their third LP in March 1969, the Velvets (with Doug Yule now on bass) embarked on a nationwide tour, playing over seventy dates all around the US. One of these included a stint at the End Of Cole Avenue club in Dallas--one of the Velvets few live performances where a professional sound engineer was actually on hand to record the sets. Some of the songs recorded over those few nights showed up in 1974 on their 1969: Velvet Underground Live album, but the sound quality was not great due to Mercurys use of third or fourth generation tapes. However, the first generation tapes have since resurfaced, and the difference in sound quality (heard here) is a welcome one. | "Wout Vercammen (1938) is a highly influential visual artist from Antwerp, Belgium. A nonstop performer since the early 50s, described by Ludo Mich as the Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde from Antwerp. A tight dressed dandy, going bananas every night, and looking as tight and clean the morning after. He has been inspiring the Belgian underground art scene for more than fifty years. He was the youngest artist making real paintings at the end of the fifties. Abstractionism reduced to one gesture. One sweep. One movement of the sword. One twirling horizon. Pulling Hokusai into space and time, Vercammen organized and executed the very first happenings in Belgium in the early sixties. Great collages, the only real pop artist in Belgium, latex word paintings, pneumatic forms before someone else got bigger with it. Always on the move. The way Wout Vercammen acts, performs, talks and moves is perfectly captured on this LP! When living in Antwerp, chances are you witnessed a Wout Vercammen performance without even realizing it, this is possible at any given moment. | "It all started with a newspaper ad. On the morning of April 3rd, 2004 I was reading through a local newspaper. There I saw an ad where some store sold rock drills that they had got from Swedish army surplus. On the evening of the same day I was in another town to play my first gig as the guest bass player for Verde. I told Mika of Verde about the hilarious ad that I had seen in the paper. We had already recorded most of the material for the this collaboration, and Mika suggested that we should name the collaboration album "Kalliopora", which is of course Finnish for rock drill. Then he started fantasizing how he would buy one and drill his way beneath his neighbours house and set there a bomb. This recording doesnt sound much like a rock drill or even a bomb. Instead, there is the unique sound of Mikas self-built synthezisers, a bunch of guitars played by yours truly, and all kinds of other sounds that I hope you all like, even if they dont sound like rock drills. - Pekka PT/Clay Figure. | ⿿Two Archipelagos looks at how different kinds of music-making machines interact, with human intervention often limited to making sure that various forms of noise interfere with each other. Verdun is generally preoccupied with oscillatory sounds, whether generated through analogue feedback loops or repeated digital synthetics. These are the vaguely pulmonary rhythms that come from the warp core aboard the USS Enterprise, or else from your CD player when something goes terribly wrong. Verdun also love to torture electric guitars. Beyond that, the sounds variety and singularity make it near impossible to describe. The opening track, ⿿Days of Being Wild, records the interaction between several textures of feedback and repetition, interrupting itself now and then with the static clipping of an over-distorted guitar, or else with the long drone of dissonant chords. The icing on this cake of noise, near the end of the song, is a crystal-clear series of descending synthetic notes, as might come out of a ray-gun. Similar interplay happens in ⿿(Oo). We hear the worlds worst garage band⿿a mutilated electric guitar, a cheap drum kit unskillfully played⿿but this is so muffled that the garage door might be shut. Then the robotic parents come to complain in their modem-language, and the rest of the song performs the two groups dispute: Verdun is about exploring just such contrasts between acoustical and digital noises. In Two Archipelagos, Verdun offers an insightful unfolding of the textural possibilities that our weird technological vector makes possible; this is a record that asks oblique questions and makes strange observations about what music today can and should do. | "Originally released by Lexicon Devil in 2002. Verdure is Donovan Quinn, who resides in Walnut Creek, deep in the East Bay of San Francisco. Hes performed his songs with the Skygreen Leopards (collaborating with Glenn Donaldson) and can currently be found performing solo, occasionally being joined by various friends and collaborators under the umbrella of the 13th Month. His Verdure alias draws influence from heavy collaboration with the Jewelled Antler Collective, that loose-fitting West Coast group of artists known for bathing themselves in the glow of free-improv, rustic Americana, backwater psychedelia, electronic experiments, the outlaw spirit of classic 80s hardcore, and ghostly, folk-inspired sounds. | "Connecting all the dots to get the complete Vertical Slit picture has been a grail-like task for hundreds of record collectors since the band and its leader Jim Shepard were outed in Forced Exposure # 13 in the late 80s. Whether James Johnson counts himself among the minuscule number of V/Slit completists is moot; the impeti for initial digging around and eventual article-publishing were the basement roar and defiant outsider vibe of the Smudge seven-inch (New Age, 1981) and Under the Blood Red Lava Lamp cassette (Old Age, 1986). Apocryphal? Perhaps. Baloney? Perhaps not. Still, the end result remains the same: the word was out and here we all are. Save some room, theres pie. This CD collects all the tracks from both the Smudge EP and the Lava Lamp cassette, both of which were recorded live in the latter part of 1980. Vertical Slit-at any time-were an anomaly whose live sound was unlike any other band preening around the south campus of Ohio State. They most assuredly did not nod in the direction of either NME or NY Rocker. Instead they pinned back ears Creem-style; three meth-baked, beer-soaked shamen who concocted a unique midwestern prog/metal slobber somewhere between In the Court of the Crimson King and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Even though no onell read about em in The Wire, no less of an authority than Chuck Eddy immortalized V/Slit when he ranked Lava Lamp number 455 in his "seminal" book Stairway to Hell: The 500 Top Heavy Metal Albums of All Time, beating out not only the two aforementioned influences (at 460 and 488 respectively) but also Confusion Is Sex (number 459). Says Chuckles, "[Lava Lamp] adds up to a moss of pedal-mass not unlike Hearthan-era Pere Ubu." Get the picture? And for those of you who can only be moved by Joy Division covers (hello!), V/Slits version of "I Remember Nothing," done as a tribute to Ian Curtis (who had died in May of 80), absolutely (to be enunciated Eddy-like) gets atomized! Chances are, if you werent in attendance that night you probably missed out on this one. In this day in age where bands crank out limited edition CDrs on a weekly basis, another one slipping through the cracks would hardly merit further mention - simply add it to the pile of decaying plastic discs and move on. Such a fate for Ragged + Right however, would be a severe injustice given this release is certainly one of the highlights in the VCO discography (and is also notable for the inclusion of special guests John Godbert, Marc Orleans and Matthew Bower). Featuring the "classic" lineup (MICK FLOWER, NEIL CAMPBELL, BRIDGET HAYDEN, ADAM DAVENPORT, JULIAN BRADLEY) that made Queen of Guess and Dabbling With Gravity and Who You Are, this self-titled double takes a wild ride through the inner-workings of VCOs stream of consciousness. Many of the tracks (selected from research and development jams) cut in abruptly, continuing the informal, expansive vibe of the bands other self-released items. The thick blanket of signature drone-fog is never far away, anchoring tunes that veer from early Velvets-style rock jammers ("Thrift") to swirling electronic mystery ("Clear"). On side three, "Gist" builds up a looping, guitar-led rhythm like a lost AR & Machines track, sharing the same side with the pulsing "Floetz," which rides a taut electro-pulse bolstered by group small percussion. This lengthy two-disc album concludes with the almost side-long "Minkey," featuring the full complement of VCO sound signatures in one big, hallucinatory swirl. Exclusive to this release is a 35-minute DVD of three live performances selected by Flower. A rare chance to see some cinema verite of the group in action, the performances here (shot in the UK in 2005 and 2007) are all on the rocking side, with furious drumming and guitar strangling. | "Vice Versa was formed by Stephen Singleton and Mark White in 1978. They asked Martin Fry to join them after Martin had interviewed them for his fanzine Modern Drugs. They founded their own independent label called Neutron Records and produced their first release (Vice Versa -- Music 4 EP). This is probably one of the greatest minimal-synth releases ever without any doubts. Neutron Records most important contribution to the scene was the 1980 EP The First 15 Minutes, which featured four unsigned bands of Sheffield: Clock DVA, Im So Hollow, the Stuntkites and of course, Vice Versa. The band released another 7" (Stilyagi/Eyes Of Christ) and the cassette 8 Aspects of Love. As Vice Versa they played a numerous amount of concerts. Their first gig was together with the Human League at Now Society at the Sheffield University and it was called What no Drummers. When they went over to Holland on tour, they were invited to jam in a studio in Rotterdam. Martin started to improvise on vocals and everybody was surprised by the quality of his voice. They decided to make him the lead singer instead of Mark White and spent about a year writing new songs, thinking of a new name and concept. "Two expansive compositions in compact form evolved from sinuous convolutions
of electrical currents conducted through an intersection of Ben Vida and Greg Davis.
Recorded, assembled and mixed in Brooklyn, NY and Burlington VT from
September to June 2012, with both parties intervening on modular synthesizer
and computer.
Working Model 1 is a nodal piece, likened to a string of pearls, with each
pearl being a chamber within which a sound environment is revealed, developed
and transitioned to the next node seamlessly through gesture, rupture, and rhythm
changes. Moments of stochastic synthesis, chromatic interrupters firing, globular
pulsations, short lived melodic lines, and rhythmic arrangements keep the piece

The first side of this release debuts a new composition from Ben Vida. In keeping with his recent patchwork-based compositions, Aggregatepulseripper (Damaged IIII) continues to explore Vidas interest in both digital and analog control sources, a compositional process that refuses to fetishize one technology over another and, more interestingly, appears to displace the musicians hand from the compositional process. The flipside of this LP features Keith Fullerton Whitmans third in a series of splits (previous releases have included No Fun Productions b/w Carlos Giffoni and Amethyst Sunsets b/w with Mike Shiflet) documenting a particularly productive period in his creative output--a series of synth concerts from 2007 and 2008. Recorded on January 14, 2008 at PAs Lounge in Somerville, MA, this piece documents the fourth in Whitmans solo synthesizer sets. Throughout the recording one can discern talking from the audience and ambient room--tone noise, as well as sound coming from different sources spread throughout the room--a small battery powered speaker on stage right, a giant Barbetta on stage left. Each speaker was fed into a different patch irrespective of its frequency response. This Japanese-only CD conveniently compiles the 2 together and throws on 2 bonus tracks of new 2005 recordings by the currently revitalized group. In a similar style to Illusion, but perhaps more freaked out, this is beautifully shambolic folk-rock from the edge of time, with parts of Toad Frog coming across like Texas answer to the Godz. The Odometer Suite is a lot more 73 than 71 (guess that "makes sense") - the naivete is a little wobbly for todays sophisticates. | "Dark Entries and Minimal Maximal have joined forces to re-issue the complete discography of Vita Noctis on a double vinyl LP. Previously these songs were restricted to limited self-released cassettes, compilation appearances and a sole 12″ Mini LP. Beware, this is abrasive, primal music made by irritated teenagers full of angst! Vita Noctis were a trio from Vilvoorde, Belgium in the Flemish Region. Inspired by the post-punk movement twin brothers Kris and Jos Kips convinced Kris girlfriend Martine Genijn to start a band in 1981.They recorded their earliest songs onto a 2-track tape deck in their bedroom studio using second-hand equipment they could afford: Roland TR-808 drum machine, Casiotone MT-31, Ibanez bass guitar and a Korg MS-20 keyboard. Their first album “In The Face Of…DEATH” was self-released on cassette only in 1984 by the “Much Money Good Boy, No Money Good-Bye” cassette in 1985. In February 1986 the band recorded five songs at Studio Care in Gent, Belgium later released as the self-titled 12″ Mini-LP on Mad In Belgium Records. Their final recording session was November 1986 returning to the bands bedroom studio, resulting in the song “She Likes Me” which appeared on the “Climax Productions Presents” LP. “More “arthouse” than “goth”, Vita Noctis blend the sneering attitude of punk with the spartan structures of minimal electronics. The band had more in common with the early electronic Sheffield scene of Cabaret Voltaire, Vice Versa or early Human League than their Belgian contemporaries. Urgent vocals go from a whisper to a scream in seconds and sound restless, bored and irritated all at once. Fuzzy guitar, simple baselines and crude electronics take turns accompanying the dynamic vocal stylings. While lyrics tackle weighty topics like death and religion, the landscape they paint is as playfully bratty as it is grim. All songs have been remastered from the restored 1/4″ reel to reel tapes by George Horn at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley California. Each double LP comes in a deluxe gatefold jacket with cover art by original designer Stephan Barbery and never before seen band photos and lyrics for each song. | "Ton Vlasman recorded this amazing piece of acid Euro folk back in 1970, making it sound like an outer space freaked out Bob Dylan with the help of Frans Schoonen (organ, flute and harmonica) and Leo van Vugt (chincha tumba and tambourine). The seven original compositions are stunning, drug inspired psychedelic pieces of acid folk that mix Dylan with Indian ragas and even add some Pink Floyd overtones, yet from an acoustic rather than electric point of view. And the album contains also a very cool version of The Velvet Undergrounds Pale Blue Eyes. If you ever wondered how Dylan would have sounded covering The V.U., heres a close example! The album, originally released on the small Flame label from Amsterdam, sold poorly back in the seventies -- thus becoming a collectors piece when it was rediscovered in the eighties. "Dark Entries is thrilled to present a 4-song compilation from one of the finest groups of the Spanish New Wave/Tecno-Pop scene of the 1980s. Vocoder were a quartet from Zaragoza, Spain formed in 1981. Keyboardists Antonio Laval and Alfonso Olarte attended the same university and fell in love with a Korg MS-20 synthesizer in a music shop window. They met keyboardist Antonio Tenas at a local radio station and were later joined by vocalist Pilar Pellicer. They recorded several demos with synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines, creating a soundtrack for the clubs and dance floors. Inspired by the “Movida Madrileña,” they sent demos to various record companies. The band signed a deal with Aviador Dro’s sublabel Neón Danza and released two EPs, “What Happens Now”/”Radio” in 1984, “Mindanao”/”Amor de Robot” in 1985 and a self-titled LP which was produced by Michel Huygen (Neuronium) in 1987. Vocoder also appeared on the TV program “La Bola De Cristal”, presenting their music video for “What Happens Now”, in which the band danced in a supermarket with a shopping cart full of synthesizers. The group mutually disbanded in 1988 and continued to organize concerts for other groups touring in Spain.
“Cuadro Sinóptico” compiles both 2-song 12″ maxi singles as one 4-song EP. All four songs were recorded during 1984-85 at Doublewtronics Studios in Madrid, Spain, using the most advanced and sophisticated techniques of time in digital recording and Direct Metal Mastering (DMM). The band utilized many professional synthesizers of the time: Roland Juno 60, Prophet V, Korg Poly 61, Yamaha DX-7, Roland TR-909 and the Linn Drum, which was used by most Italo Disco artists. These songs were recorded in the highest fidelity with disc jockeys in mind. Genuinely catchy, Vocoder combined soaring melodies with cybernetic coldness. A futuristic sound for the modern age topped with Pilar’s charismatic vocals. Lyrically they address robotic love, disco dancing, and the tropical island of Mindanao, and sing in Spanish, English and French.
All songs on “Cuadro Sinóptico” have been remastered from the original reel to reel master tapes for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. Each LP includes a double-sided insert with photos, lyrics and liner notes by Flemming Dalum, a Danish DJ who introduced much of the world to Vocoder in 2008 on his “French Spanish Italo Connection” mix. Formed in 1995, and after several self-released tapes and CD-Rs, VTB so excited Nurse With Wounds Steven Stapleton, that he brought his United Dairies label out of cold storage to release their first album proper, The Inhazer Decline, in 2000. Since then theyve released music on such labels as Misra, Beta Lactam Ring, Textile, Digitalis, Pickled Egg, Alt Vinyl as well as their own imprints Volucan and Volfurten with the exceptional Classic Erasmus Fusion from 2006 being a possible highlight. On record, VTB offer stark and stunning absurdities in the most bizarrely beautiful way. Recycling and re-contextualizing their material is an innate habit, and the variety of recording options they might choose (be it a highly-equipped professional studio or a second-hand dictaphone) allows their craft to be formed in a myriad of different ways. VTB have toured extensively throughout Europe and North America and in concert they are the duo of Daniel Padden and Aaron Moore. Absurd humor and eclectic ways of producing sounds are characteristic of their live performances and their extensive knowledge of the traditions of experimental and folk music makes the band difficult to categorize. Three men came to Chapel Hill in late November of 2006 to spread their sounds: the show happened to fall on a holiday and Aaron Moore, Daniel Padden and Clarence Manuelo played to a small crowd of fifteen or so folks in the friendly confines of the Nightlight Bar and Club. What ensued was an unfolding carpet woven from waves of tape, twang and beating of objects. The old piano even got in on the action - the floor was played and, as the gentlemen sang, the books lining the walls seemed to hum back. The feeling, vibe or theme that starts the album and reappears later is very desert based in my mind. Though a very strange desert, one with muilt coloured sands and camels walking along the sky and strange arabic men with huge beards trailing behind them as they give audio swimming lesson backwards. Yes this is very odd stuff indeed, Track one drags us into this strange ethnic world with wonky snake dance guitar and ethnic percussion. Track two takes us deeper into the desert where we really seem to start to loose are mind as we meet all manner of manic chanting and strange audio shenanigans, before dropping into a very odd nightmare world of bent Bernard Herrmann string work, via strange building drone tones. Next it goes into a little surreal ballet dance practice, with clunky piano and all manner of bizarre calls and sounds over the top. It all ends off with a strange ritual air via distorted instrumentation and what almost sounds like typewriter key hits .Track three seems to ushers us into a black and white scene maybe something from a odd early Jess Franco film, where strange macabre female dances out a jerky and plainly disturbing death dance. As ragged violin hover and swirl in horrific air ,female voices chant like spirits calling you over the other side and goosepimply organ weaves on like the reaper seeking out victims. So as you can see you have to expected anything and everything to happen with in these audio confines. Here he offers two soft electronic music pieces, which are like snowflakes (of course it never snows in Dutch christmas times). Almost kitchy and new age like on a super cheesy keyboard with all the wrong (and thus right) preset sounds, Dittrich is perhaps that great family man that such tunes under his tannenbaum for a wealth of happy children, who start unwrapping their presents as daddy finishes his tunes.
