Artist: 1/3 OCTAVE BAND
Title: Tarakohe/Ritual Of Gravity
Format: 7"
Label: Fusetron
Country: USA
Price: $5.00
"If youve ever heard of New Zealand musician Bill Wood, chances are that it was related to his work with Campbell Kneales Birchville Cat Motel. But Bill has his own line of space rock/guitar drone/massive atmopsherics as well, and he records them as 1/3 Octave Band. Woods music is new to my ears but its highly impressive. He takes a very maxist approach to drones, filling the pulses of his endless frontiers with shifting arrays of instrumental intrigue and ominously pulsing lights. A great thing, and on that thick Czech vinyl that weighs about a pound. What more could you want?" - Byron Coley, WIRE. Edition of 250.

Artist: 100 FANZINES/10 YEARS OF BRITISH PUNK 1976-1985
Title: 100 Fanzines/10 Years of British Punk 1976-1985
Format: Book
Label: PPP Editions
Country: USA
Price: $36.00
"4to.; black-and-white and color illustrations on newsprint; printed wrappers; printed ecru dust jacket. First edition; 500 copies, the entire edition. This publication reproduces 100 British punk fanzines culled from the Mott Collection and features two essays “Glue Was All Over My Fingers” by Toby Mott and “We Are the Writing on the Wall” by Victor Brand. The zine is mass-produced grafitti, a love letter to an anonymous public, a black-and-white shout into the wilderness. As a product, it goes hand-in-hand so perfectly with the autochthonous priorities of the punk movement that it seems in retrospect almost inevitable. The youth of the United Kingdom—under- and unemployed, adrift and disillusioned in the aftermath of ‘60s utopianism—were the writing on the wall in the mid-1970s. The kids of punk werent all right: Punk was the return of the repressed. Even if they were only talking to themselves, they could express themselves without censorship through music and grainy, handwritten pamphlets." - PPP Editions.

Artist: 100 FLOWERS
Title: s/t
Format: LP
Label: Superior Viaduct
Country: USA
Price: $16.00
"100 FLOWERS (previously known as THE URINALS) were a power trio whose sole 1983 album is an enduring document of the Southern California underground. Based in crime-ridden 80s Los Angeles against the backdrop of juvenile hardcore and vapid hard rock, 100 Flowers crafted a sound that rests between the inspired bursts of The Minutemen and the pastoral jangle of the Dream Syndicate with similarities to the equally oblique Monitor and The Gun Club (who even included a Urinals cover in their set). The trio wielded a gripping visual aesthetic and hyper-literate lyrical content that reflected their art-school backgrounds, while a ferocity and frustration borne out of their bleak urban environment permeates their songs. Strains of UK post-punk can be heard on "All Sexed Up" and skittish tension on "Presence of Mind." A far cry from the beach punk and surf rock of their contemporaries, album closer "Californias Falling into the Ocean" contains all of their signature qualities: off-kilter delivery, subversive sentiments and an irrefutable pop sensibility that reflects their immersion in LAs burgeoning Paisley Underground scene. The band splintered shortly after the release of this album, but time has only intensified the urgency of 100 Flowers music. First-time reissue of underground Los Angeles classic originally released in 1983. Includes digital download card." - Superior Viaduct.

Artist: 100$ BAND/SPIT
Title: Split
Format: Lathe Cut 10"
Label: 100$ Band/Spit
Country: New Zealand
Price: $25.00
"NEW in the el nuevo dunedin series of split 10" lathe records... the best $100 Band gig I saw was at an art college barbeque, where they performed an utterly intense half-hour drone with violin and cello to the fore, followed by almost an hour of Alastair Galbraith and former Snares singer Maxine Funkes songs in a very pop style. The band at it was possibly doesnt exist now, due to drummer Mike Dooley (ex of the Enemy/Toy Love and the Snares)s preference for the songs, but this disc remains to show what they were like at their best. Alastairs been working on long-form drones for a while now, ala his Cd Radiant, and the $100 Band gave them a rough, energetic going-over, falling into vast holes of wordless, timeless beauty. the artist known as Spit, Ryan Cockburn, doesnt take a whizz-bang approach to turntablism, and the pieces on this record are definately at the quieter end of his scale. Live, however, he develops immense journeys that roil and tear time, with an unpredictable edge that he creates via an unusual method - he cuts his records in half and glues them back together, in odd combinations; and since he now has hundreds of them he has little to no idea how theyll sound or react to the welded needles on his antique record players. The result is always something odd and his side of this record are like complete beginnings of the longer pieces which hopefully will see wider release than his cdr series."

Artist: 12 MINUTES AT THE HOT CLUB MURPHY
Title: s/t
Format: 7"
Label: Messthetics
Country: USA
Price: $7.00
"a limited edition of 457 reissue of a Rosetta Stone rarity from 1982: adventurous, subtly-hued pop art from an all-star line-up of post-Homosexuals / This Heat / Rock in Opposition squat savants. The full story is more complicated – and exponentially richer (as is the music!), but heres a short version, in the words of Rob Storey, the one constant in 30-plus years of Murphy variations - Federation Murphy, Orchestre Murphy, The Murphy Love Experience, Murphy Patrol, Murphy Working Stiffs, Laboratoires Murphy, etc.: (musicians performing on the EP appear in boldface):

"We had made a start as the Good For Nothings in about 77/78 and played sort of punk rock music with a line-up of Catherine OSullivan, Bing Selfish, Rodrigo Lodwick, Seamus Luttman-Johnson, and Robert Storey. We soon got tired of the straitjacket of the punk sound and started trying other things, fake jazz, more theatrical elements, improvisation and performance deconstruction – which resulted in some extremely antagonistic audience reactions... "After making the first single Fed Up Skank / Slipping Past On The Inside, Bing was a semi-detached member of the Murphies anyway, and went on to make Selfish Works. Chris Gray, Jim Whelton, Ted Barrow (who had all been associated with the Homosexuals), Lepke Buchwalter, David Doyle and Joe Torres (who were Milk from Cheltenham), Janey Haggar (Nancy Sesay), and Mick Hobbs (The Work), amongst others, became part of the pool of people who would do gigs, tours or recording sessions. It was a loose arrangement of players by the time we made 12 minutes at the Hot Club Murphy."

In the meantime, Robs label Noise Method had at least six cassette releases in addition to the Murphy Federation single [NM1], the Hot Club Murphy 12" [NM6, 1982] and Selfish Works [NM8, though officially on El Frenzy, 1982], and thered also been several junkets to Barcelona that resulted in the Domestic Sampler – UMYU compilation [1981] and Bings Selfish Works (of whom and of which much more anon!). In addition to the Hot Club tracks that Chris Gray recorded at Surrey Sound, others were taped at This Heats legendary Cold Storage studio in Brixton with Pete Bullen. Mick Hobbs left The Work (to be replaced by Jim Welton/Amos) and went on to Officer!; Catherine OSullivan went on to Sally Patience (who were named for a Murphies song)… Anyway, Messthetics and Stewart Andersons [Boyracer+++] Milk and Alcohol label have reissued 12 Minutes at the Hot Club Murphy in its entirety as a 7" EP, limited to 457 numbered copies. The silkscreened sleeve reproduces the original front artwork (admitting there were many variations with different inks and cover stocks, and as the original screens and LetraSetting for the 12" wore out and were patched or replaced "on the fly")… There has never been musician credits until now. YouTube videos are online for Hiding in the Forest and The Encampment showing the originals and representative artwork from the 7" EPs."- Messthetics.

Title: Complete Discography
Format: CD
Label: Sacred Bones
Country: USA
Price: $15.00
"Earlier this year Sacred Bones released the singles collection from 13th Chime which collected the scant few recordings released during their brief lifetime as well as a handful of heretofore unheard demos and alternate recordings. With their blend of dark driving aggression and sparse arrangements for a brief moment in time the band seemed poised to breakout of the day to day of slogging it out in clubs and onto the international radar but through a series of mishaps ended up a footnote and dissolving into obscurity. In the liner notes which told of the 13th Chimes formation and brief ascent as deathrock contenders it was noted that there was a number of recordings that were intended for a full length release and were subsequently shelved at the 11th hour due to record company politics. Sacred Bones Records is now proud to bring to light the long lost LP. After languishing in the vaults for several decades the 13th Chime full length finally sees the light of day. The CD version collects both the full length and singles collection plus one bonus song called "Pigs" on one disc and includes detailed liner notes that chart the bands rise and fall." - Sacred Bones.

"Sacred Bones is proud to announce the release of the 13th Chime singles collection. Long sought after by collectors, the UK band only released a scant three singles in their time together before dissolving into obscurity. Their sounda merging of deathrocks dark driving aggression and post-punks sparse arrangementsreflected the realities of life in a small market town in the desolate political landscape of early 80s Britain. In cooperation with the band members Sacred Bones has collected 13th Chimes three singles plus rare never before heard demo recordings of Tinker Man,Radio Man, and 13th Victim. Detailed liner notes by Clive OGrady tell the entire storyfrom schoolmates in the Suffolk town of Haverhill to tours with The Enid, Theater of Hate, support slots with The Adicts and Dead Kennedys, and an inevitable breakup, making friends and fans out of John Peel and The Groundhogs Tony McPhee along the way. "200 YEARS is none other than those straw dogs of skull counting (and flowers!), BEN CHASNY (SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE) and ELISA AMBROGIO (MAGIC MARKERS) Yep, thats what they called them back in grade school-and thats where the storm clouds started massing. It would be years and many cold dishes of revenge before this unique version of socialization would blossom into the music that both are rumored for today. They still dont lie, but the debut 200 Years LP sounds like theyre figuring out a way to build around the smoking holes, instead of the rough old craniometry count down. If destruction is a type of construction, then you can say we here at DCHQ knew they had it in em the whole time! Like magnets, or Voltron, apart these two have wreacked havoc with electricity and enemies, but when joined create a force of absolute cohesion and power. Quiet-like, though! 200 Years is to a listening experience like seeing is through a dirty window-you cant see anything clear out there but the light. And thats more than you got in the room. Sonically, its basically Ben and Elisa with guitars, Elisas voice, Bens guitar alone, the breath of a harmonium, the faintest strains of piano. Theres more playing in the mix than just that, but its like that ol dirty window-the sounds are more not there than they are there." -Drag City.

Title: Mugshots Vol. Seven

Price: $6.50
"Kevin Winter, AKA 2673, is a New Jersey sound artist whos amassed a substantial and very impressive discography in a short amount of time -- culminating in his phenomenal recent splits with experimental music icons Kevin Drumm and Jessica Rylan. His side here is a cold, willowy stream of high-pitched speaker sizzle with ear-piercingly clear oscillator tones cutting through. The combination of icy purity and textural noise, as usual with 2673s music, is perfectly balanced. Not particularly harsh, but too stark to be calming, this track is unsettling in the best possible way. Cyber Blast Records owner Habeeb infuses his own ceremonial music with a different slant. The warm ambient drones and deep throbbing basses of his track explore the same stark Antarctic icescape as 2673, but with a much smoother, less textured sound that is more subliminal. If you listen very carefully, you can hear the monsters lurking beneath the smooth surface. Dark ambient at its minimalist best. LIMITED TO 32 COPIES." - Fargone.

The intended 7" never happened & the reels laid dormant in the bottom of a wardrobe for the next 17 years until Unwucht heard a rough mix taken from an old cassette tape & enthusiastically proposed releasing it. "First reissue of this ultra-obscure pre-no-wave LP, originally released in Japan, 1975." - FE. "3/3 are Reck (guitar, vocals), Higo Hiroshi (bass) and Chiko Hige (drums). The name was inspired by a Japanese comic (4/4). In February 1975, 3/3 (Sanbun No San) released this album in a tiny pressing of 15 copies only to get a record deal. The cover was homemade and the recording sounds live but without audience. The music is ultra heavy guitar-dominated psychedelic rock like a mixture of Blue Cheer / Randy Holden/MC5 and early punk/new wave bands. The sound quality is mediocre but the music is a blaster. 3/3 has never released another recording. Both Reck and Hige then moved to New York where they stayed for over a year and played with James Chance & the Contortions, Lydia Lunch (Teenage Jesus & The Jerks) and others (No New York movement). They returned to Japan in 1978 to start a new group which became very famous: Friction. In 1979 Friction appeared on a compilation and in 1980 they recorded their first album. Friction released more than 10 albums in Japan. Friction has certainly had a heavy influence on the late 1970s Japanese punk and new wave scene. Reck is again active on the Tokyo scene and has teamed up with Haino Keiji and hardcore drummer Pill, with whom he performs under the name Head Rush. This album of 3/3 is the rarest underground album ever released in Japan." - Shadoks.

Artist: 39 CLOCKS
Title: Pain It Dark
Format: CD
Label: Bureau B
Country: Germany
Price: $18.00
"The Bureau B label reissues the first album by Hannover, Germany duo 39 Clocks, originally released in 1981 by No Fun Records. Many a wild tale has enriched the history of 39 Clocks. For example, the time they went on stage with vacuum cleaners and circular saws instead of guitars, the LSD inside their heads having erased all memory of how to play their songs. Or the time when they were expelled from the Documenta, because Joseph Beuys was aggravated by their music. Then there was the angry member of the audience who attacked one of the band members with a knife on stage. Not forgetting the concert in a cavernous aircraft hangar where the amps were turned up so loud that by the end of the show, not a single spectator was left. Sounds music magazine duly confirmed it the "Concert of the Month." The great thing is that every one of these stories is true. Christian Henjes (aka C.H. 39) and Jürgen Gleue (aka J.G. 39) as 39 Clocks were one of the most provocative bands Germany has ever produced; pop scholar Diedrich Diederichsen described them as the best German band of the 80s. The Clocks took shape in 1979, turning their backs on punk and inventing "Psycho Beat," the self-styled counterpoint to the burgeoning German new wave scene, the NDW. Their music can be seen as a futuristic, definitively urban, German form of U.S. 60s garage punk, with a referential nod to New Yorks Suicide and The Velvet Underground -- sparse and gritty garage chord progressions, hypnotic rhythms (invariably emanating from the beatbox) and deadpan English lyrics delivered with the heaviest of German accents. The 39 Clocks pushed back the borders of experimentation with their barely-tolerable live improvisation and atonal meanderings, lower than lo-fi, with a tinny beatbox that tested the resilience of their listeners to the full. Despite some shaky success, geographical and mental shifts brought about their eventual split in 1983. This CD reissue contains a previously-unreleased bonus track and a 12-page booklet illustrated with a wealth of rare photos featuring liner notes by ZickZack record label founder Alfred Hilsberg." -Bureau B

Title: Zoned
Format: CD
Label: De Stijl

Price: $13.00
"The first public appearance pairing Christian Henjes (then Zero Jack) and Juergen Gleue (then Genius Nr.17) was in 1976, at the Dada Nova (a space later occupied by Otto Müehls AAO commune) in midtown Hannover, Germany. Known for pranksterism and the destruction of the clubs in which they would perform, friction would follow the band everywhere. In 1979 they were thrown out of a show in Kassel at the Documenta (their sounds had disturbed Joseph Beuys). They created an outrage (they wrote a tune with the title Art Minus Idiots) at the Filmtage Hannover with their avant garde Super 8 movies under the guise of director Zachius Lipschitz. Rumour claims that at a Hannnover show at the Cafe Glocksee, they played the vacuum cleaner and a circular saw instead of guitars. Inspired, then (clearly), by protest in the broadest and most romantic sense (they wrote a tune with the title Radical Student Mob In Satin Boots) theirs was a sound attuned to classic American punk/Nuggets. This collection was put together with the non-completest in mind (originals of some of these records are as rare as Italian underwear), intending to display the general 39 Clocks vibe, but also some of their more curious wrinkles. And as Diedrich Diedrichsen wrote the first review of the band, we at DeStijl are very pleased with his liner notes." - DeStijl

Heres what we wrote in 2002 about the 49 AMERICANS reissues on the Japanese label, Saidera. "Wonder", issued by Saidera, was the 1st LP, "E Pluribus Unum", plus a handful of bonus tracks:

"Lovingly assembled and beautifully produced career-spanning recordings by this late 70s/early 80s UK DIY super group. The main instigator behind the Americans was Andrew Giblet Brenner who assembled a loose, disparate group of musical/non-musical practitioners as "an experiment in equality and democracy". This "democracy" included Nag, Bendle and Else Watt of Door And The Window, David Toop, Steve Beresford and Max Eastley (coming out of the anything goes improv scene), Viv Albertine of the Slits, Vivien Goldman (who was simultaneously recording the classic dub/funk/punk Dirty Washing 12" on 99 Records which featured Beresford as well as Keith Levine, George Oban, Robert Wyatt, Adrian Sherwood and others) , Igor (Nag & Bendles roommate), parents of the members and many more.. The sound over the course of their career started off as rugged Door And The Window-ish songs/pieces on the first single but by the 1st LP and 12" evolved into an off-kilter songwriting style similar to that of Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Red Krayola, early Beat Happening, Good Missionaries and lesser knowns like Department Store Santas, Mark Tucker, Philip Johnson, etc.. By "We Know Nonsense" many songs have an almost lounge jazz style. This probably doesnt sound too appealing but the record does have its moments, including one of my fave 49 American songs (though some of the tracks are definitely not my bag) ...."

"What might seem to others to be harsh reviews were to us wonderful complimentary fodder; swamped in kettle and saucepan percussion, a hearty shabbiness, amateurism viewed as a material virtue rather than a spiritual one, and the best quote of all, makes Swell Maps sound like Led Zeppelin." - Nag (Wonder liner notes).

"The 49 Americans were an experiment in the pursuit of happiness... Have fun! Play! Participate! Everyone should be allowed to be an American." - Andrew Brenner (aka Giblet).

The The Original 14-Track Single... CD compiles the 1979 Wonder Only 85 Pennies 7" on N.B. Records (Nag & Bendles label) and the 1981, 10 track 12" on Choo Choo Train Records as well as 6 bonus tracks from 1979. Wonder includes the 1st LP from 1980 (originally on Choo Choo Train) plus 7 tracks from their first live gig at the London Musicians Collective in 1980. We Know Nonsense is the second full length from 1982 (co-released originally by Choo Choo Train and Toops semi-legendary Quartz label) plus 3 bonus tracks from 81 featuring Nigel Coombes on violin. Packaged in thick miniature old LP style jackets with extensive liner notes and lyrics (in japanese and english). The Wire included "We Know Nonsense" in their list of "100 Records That Set The World On Fire (While No One Was Listening) + Extra 30 Records":

"Not many of those visiting the London Musicians Collective venue in Camden Town during the late 1970s, and hearing the free improvisers active therein, would have conceived the idea of recording an album of happy-go-lucky pop songs with them. But thats exactly what American expat Giblet (alias Andrew Brenner) set out to do, and so here are 17 doo-wop, disco and samba ditties produced and co-written by David Toop and Steve Beresford. Musicians include Lol Coxhill, Peter Cusack, Max Eastley, Viv Albertine (of The Slits), and Etta and Eddy Saunders."
